I'm just curious, since our phone numbers are quite personal

It's not shared with us, it is only discord that handles that stuff.

The reason we have phone verification as a requirement is because our server is a public, discoverable server - this makes us a higher priority target for users interested in scamming/phishing etc. as such, we have this in place to massively reduce the accessibility to our server to "bot accounts" while still keeping it publicly accessible for people that want to join the community.

But couldnt you do email verification instead?

We already have email verification as well, however emails are very easy to make en-masse, additionally people can set up aliases (these can act as an email address while not being the end point for mail) - so you can link 9999999 or however many you like alias emails to your one email. It's also possible to automate that as well, either with a program/script, making email verification relatively unreliable as a safety feature - it also doesn't cost much to reliably bypass as you can always sign up for email accounts pretty much anywhere for free - so even without knowledge on how to automate bypassing it, it's a very low entry bar.

Discord has an article about verification steps here; https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/6181726888215-Verification-Required-FAQ
