I like:
mode: Capitals
cards: progressive
alliances: off
fog: off
**Blizzards: ** on
Portals Alternating
ideal maps: Ones like Troy or Earth 44A.D: large, where there are a healthy mix of big and small continents with a fairly balanced bonus-to-borderlands ratios. Where there is a reasonable amount of chokepoints while still having lots of potential for flanking.

I like this kind of game set up because in my opinion, it becomes more skill based with plenty of potential for different playstyles.
Turtling is still a effective strategy with blizzards and capitals but the card bonus ensures you don't often get stalemated.
No alliances and fog being off ensures a player can't rise up out of sheer luck or ignorance.
Between moderately experienced players, the game becomes a match of who can outwit each other and potentially, who can pit opponents against each other.
You can turtle and slowly build up your forces, but you'd best be wary of portal flanks, or capital runs.
You can be aggressive and card block, but overdo it and you exhaust yourself.
You usually don't need to worry about being teamed on, Just make sure you're not the most appealing target!
Let the card bonus build up but risk enemies stealing cards from easy targets, or take the targets yourself early on but get a smaller bonus?

You can always come back from the brink of defeat with just a bit of luck and some 4D plays!

mode: WoDom
cards: Fixed
alliances: on
fog: off
Blizzards: alternating
Portals: off
maps: mostly classic and sometimes world conquest

I like the Classic Fixed game. I know the argument about it not being so good because it is not as consistent as the meta setting. The two main reason for me are: first, I like the classic board Game, but I do not really like the fast prog World Dom matches (don't get me wrong, they can be very fun) and classic fixed gives me the vibes of the board game while still being nice and slow. The second reason is, I like the psychology of the allies and I just like turtleling in Europe :)
