#What’s your unpopular opinion about Risk?
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Europe Advanced Capitals, while enjoyable, is not RISK.
In your opinion, what makes something qualify as Risk?
The thing that happened to me yesterday, and I am thankful it doesn’t happen often. I was hosting a 6 player game. I launch the game, and 3 people do not ready-up, and another quits on round 1. So it’s basically a 1 v 1 with 4 bots on round 2. That isn’t Risk. Or, it isn’t good Risk.
You mean…”In your unpopular opinion…” 🤣
A Yogi Berra style quip: “His opinions are so controversial. Everybody likes them.”
Hmmm, lets think.
Risk 1v1 is more fun then Risk FFA.
True Random is better than Balanced Blitz
If you can't reach gm you just suck at the game and rng is not the reason you are low ranked.
It is! 🤣
It is true or it is an unpopular opinion (or both) 😄
Probably both!! 🤣
Arco is a very good player
I'd rather play my best and lose, than to play poorly and still win somehow.
Ergo, I love playing this game in its purest form!
If that's not unpopular enough:
I enjoy playing the game myself more than watching someone else play. I want to be engaged.
There are always games that we find ourselves in, that because of our spawns, because of the dice, because of our opponents, that we all are just going to lose. Hopefully, those games are few and far between.
Me reading this peaking expert like 👁️👄👁️
Thanks for the encouraging words!
Another season… another failure 😭
Enjoyable is a strong word
The fact this game is as strategically powerful as chess
Slamming stacks is fun.
Encouraging? You can go lower!!! Play more with less time, slam stacks early in the game, and always go for Australia… no matter what! You’ll be a beginner in no time!
Win/lose ratio and ranks are overrated as definition of skills
I have a dream.
Which one?
true random caps is very fun
I have dreams like you. No, really!

Just much less touchy-feely

They mainly happen somewhere warm and sunny

On an island that I own

Tanned and rested and alone

Surrounded by enormous piles of money

🏴☠️
true random is actually a good gamemode
and balanced blitz is NOT balanced (that opinion is popular anyways)
Alliances make the game better because an element of diplomacy is added.
That neighbor caps mean we should be friends and fight everyone else first.
I think that's a popular opinion 😄
Unpopular Opinion: If you spam "let's go" and "start game" in a unfull lobby, you should be kicked.
If you can't wait 3 minutes for a game to fill, one can't trust you to stick around for the game.
What if you’re the host. I sometimes reply “start game” or “let’s go” several times to anyone with the audacity to try to tell me how to run my lobby especially if they are spamming those same emotes. They seem to get the message and either settle down or leave.
Yes those great players that spam that when you are 3 people in the lobby, while hosting a 6 player lobby. And once you actually start the lobby 1 or 2 minutes later they don't ready up.
I usually am the host because I have quite a few maps.
I'll keep that tactic in mind. Still frustrating though, because so many players do it and yet they quit on like, turn 2 or 3.
Which ruins the game, especially on Capitals or zombies when the bots are completely incompetent.
I've seen some threads on here where people are frusterated with hosts that use bots to bait a fuller lobby, but I don't ever do that and still get these rubes who join a 2/6 lobby and spam "start game"
Only in 1v1. Losing everything on really silly roll while building up for half an hour is irritating
Sounds quite reasonable
In most cases, it's strategically better
I think so but all my opponents(that capped after me) all go full hostile till we both die horribly by the snowballer lol. So figured I was a minority
Balanced Blitz is to Newtonian Physics as True Random is to Quantum Mechanics.
Risk is idiots game
Without conversation, there is no diplomacy and the game turns into a simple game of luck.
You can do a lot of communication with ingame emotes and alliances turned on. If you want "the real deal" I reccommend joing a VC tournament where you can talk with the players on Discord and make deals 🙂
This version of online RISK is the finest ever and even the finest possible. The devs can all retire because not the slightest improvement is needed.
I'd say the core gameplay is pretty polished.
The UI though, fuck no
classic fixed with (voice) chat and unlimited time for diplomacy is a theoretical 6-way tie
What’s your reasoning behind that?
the tl;dr is that exhaustive diplomacy leads to perfect balance between the players because no one is allowed to gain even the tiniest advantage over the rest
I can see where you’re coming from
What are the popular opinions here
Risk doesn't give nutritional value (carbs, fat vitamins, etc)
Technically correct, but probably only I could come up with this 😄
People often take the whole “bonuses don’t matter in prog” philosophy too far, even on maps, settings and situations where they do matter, and can give a victory long before the card trades get big.
Similarly the people who say “kills are never profitable in fixed” are overgeneralising, and overlooking situations where they are.
the best player always wins 🙂
It's generally not the best move to card skip before the first trading sequence.
Classic is NOT the best map
It's generally the best move to card skip before the first trading sequence.
Pete is not the best risk streamer.
That said I’ll be far too busy to read your reactions as I’ve got to go watch the video Pete posted this morning and maybe another one I missed. Did I miss one yesterday?! I’ll have to check.
From every position?
Even if nobody else card skipped and your sixth in turn order card skipping will guarantee a win
Let me get my knife. I'll have you like this ^^
XD
The proper way to play progressive is for no one to take a card ever.
Exactly
That is truly an unpopular opinion. Fits this thread 😂
i thought the proper way to play was to make sure you all your territories have only 1 troop left to make room for the new recruits 😉
especially when you gonna go to 5 cards
The loss of any 1 anywhere must be avenged with a full send attack.
If you open my capital (even through 1s) it is because you have run out of time to play RISK and are asking nicely for me to throw all of my troops against your capital
Thank you for placing my second capital in such a convenient spot.
Classic is not even a map!
Absolutely a coincidence - promise it wasn't me
And the conspiracies begin 😭
Japan is an underrated map.
Risk is just a game.
Losing over 20 troops before your first card trade is an awesome start
Japan is actually one of my favorite maps
Zombies need to attack faster.
i think they should add an map af the Soviet union
This means War 🤣 I hate true random
You waged war and lost a 10v2, sadly.
You wanna hear the sad part, doesn't have to be true random for that to happen to me 🤣
Skill issue
Skill issue
I like it when players place capitals in my honeypot. And I enjoy being a player that capitals inside other players honeypots.
My skill has nothing to do with dice rolls
the original game used actual dice, 🎲 hence the name: Risk
Yes and it was luck based not skill based, thanks for proving my point
True Random is not for the faint of heart. Enjoy your Balanced Blitz training wheels as you develop your skill set.
@cloud sentinel I play true random occasionally I just don't like it and if you need other players to get unlucky rolls to win it's your own skill set you should be worried about, I'm expert rank atm and happy with it , there's tons I need to learn still but that's ok.
My point is: 5v2 is an unwise attack. Balanced Blitz is just easier, because it allows for lower risk management thresholds.
@cloud sentinel so you win every balanced blitz game you play ?
Believe me, losing 10v2 in true random sucks. Every time. So I feel the pain there.
Every game is tough. Certainly not.
Expert is hard to get. Congratulations!
Thanks, I mean no offense
The whole slider thing is a game changer. Most people in ffa aren’t using it, so I think that may be a bit unfair to them.
The slider has cost me a game sometimes when I forget to put it back on a bigger stack 🙄
Ouch
I do use the slider though , you have to your right
Yeah up to 10% troop save when used in the right cases. In close games that can be huge
Yes
Both modes require different strategies
What's the best strat for true random ?
But I miss slinging actual dice sometimes and seeing the craziness go down
Far more conservative
I don't know how you get more conservative than taking a card and fortifying like most do in blitz, card skipping??
32 troop count is not enough to eliminate a 28 troop count player
That is peculiar to balanced blitz
When you put it like that your kind of selling it to me a bit, would be nice not to have a stack slammed the moment a noob gets an impulse
When I lose a lot of rolls I just single stack it
Looking forward to Secret Mission Risk, Castle Risk c.1984 (with Diplomats, Admirals, Marshals, etc.) & the greatest of all imo: Risk Godstorm. Keep it up developers!
Tell me more about the gameplay of those, I really would like commanders to make a return
Castle Risk was epic. The first capital mode to give three defender 3 dice. General = +1 on highest attacking die, Marshall = +1 on highest defender die, Diplomat halted attack from one single player to another, Admiral allowed any territory bordering the sea to attack any other country bordering the sea, the spy allowed one to see what cards another person held. That game was wild & crazy.
Godstorm was a combo of Magic the Gathering with Castle Risk, where temples served as capitals.
All of it may be too much to play online for now, but who knows. This new Secret Mission risk sounds like a sci-fi combo of the above games.
Sounds awesome but unfortunately they will probably say that it's all different mechanics, that was what they told me when I asked them to make urban assault features optional
Ooh
What are urban assault features?
In urban assault each colour was a faction with a unique name , blue was future corp, white was the obsidian order and I can't remember rest as it's been years, each commander would be placed on a territory at the start of the game, blues commander had an air strike which could take 3 troops out automatically without need to fight the Territory at all , whites commander rolled dice and depending what they rolled would defend on how many he killed but if he rolled a one, the machine he operated would breakdown and he'd kill one of his own troops, there was town halls in place of capitals, the player who held the most town halls would be elected mayor every 4 turns, the mayor at the start of every turn had 2 options, he could award another player 2 cards to spend on troops or outlaw a player and put a bounty of 3 cards on them , whoever took most of the outlawed players territory in 2 turns would take the cards and the mayor could take their own bountys. If everyone held the same amount of town halls it went by territory instead, all of this encouraged more aggressive play, you didn't get stalemates or take a card and fortify. I loved it but apparently it wasn't very popular according to people I've spoken to on discord
That sounds fire. Encouraging chaos. Might share similarities with the new Secret Mission Risk.
It was fire, I'm surprised that they don't seem to want to use just some of it at some point but I hope your right about secret mission, is that going to be a separate game altogether or an added pack to global domination
Not sure. Waiting to hear more!
Each troop lost in an unnecessary cap roll means an angel got their wings.
If you don’t roll my cap first turn… I will FIGHT you!
why does everyone get a 10 set. I hav e never seen so many 10 sets in my 30 years playing risk
Send more dudes in classic fixed
@languid orchid. Yep and they always get it on 3 cards while your stuck with 4 of the same card
Getting eliminated from a risk tournament can be just as much fun as making the next round
Yep
I just got eliminated from a tournament and honestly - I'm more than happy! I had a great time, learned from my mistakes and now I have more valuable free time for other things.
game takes too long
Risk is for girls.
You think that's an unpopular opinion?
The best ever death metal risk streamer who came out of Denton never settled on a name.
??
No! All my opinions are well reasoned and insightful. And I never write anything deliberately controversial, provocative, sarcastic, or facetious for this unpopular opinion channel.
Never been kissed? 🥲
Because you play RISK? 🤔
psssst, don't tell them you play Risk, the right moment for that is if you want to break up but don't have the courage to do that yourself.
Classic.
