Inspiration:
I am Welsh, I’m not particularly nationalist but know enough about the country origin to realise how interesting a time period it is. I was originally looking at a more ancient time period but feel that would make a better “Simple” map… (which will follow)
Idea & Theme:
It’s an amalgamation of several time periods in Welsh history but mainly built around the Welsh rebellion of 1400 – 1415 lead by Owain Glyndwr.
During the Welsh rebellion the counties as you see on my map didn’t look like that. The north and west counties were formed around 1280 during the Edwardian Conquest of Wales whereas the land to the south and east were controlled by “Marcher Lords” basically English (or Welsh) nobles loyal to the English crown who were given land to “guard” on the England/Wales border
The historic counties of Wales as you see in my map would be accurate as of around 1535 by which point the English crown had taken direct control of most of the Marcher Lordships and formed them into counties.
Monmouthshire didn’t become an official county of Wales until 1974.
The territory names are taken from the 14th century during the Marcher Lord period.
Some of the territories have been merged for gameplay reasons but also to fit under the rules limit, originally there were 120 territories on this map but I have reduced that to 91.
The dashed white lines representing the non-obvious territory joins are also historical e.g. the connection between Flintshire and North Marches represents the Welsh campaign of 1400 culminating on an attack on Montgomery (Trefaldwyn) castle in 1402.
Monmouth to South Marches is a proposed path taken by the Welsh in 1405 following the sacking of Cardiff and Newport castles.
Process:
It was done in Photoshop, I started with the map of Wales from google and drew the outline, I then used 2 different historical maps from Wikipedia to draw the territories and counties (as mentioned previously, two different timelines).
Strategy:
The formula I used to calculate the bonus’ is ((Territories + Fronts)-2)/2 and rounded down.
I have designed this map to include choke points, several 3 or 4 point guards in a multi continent scenario but also to make it difficult to turtle and hold single continents by adding multiple attack fronts.
There are a few single territory kill guards
In most cases the bonus doesn’t exceed the point guard of a single continent. You need to venture outside of your continent to reduce your defensive points hopefully prompting aggression.
🏴 <--- need one of these in game too please
I love the look of this map. really large though, have you thought about making a simpler version and having this as an advanced?
Yes, smaller one to follow... hopefully before contest end 😄
I had permission to do 15
Great design, very nice attention to detail
