If i were to play a ranked game and get second to sixth place (not first), does my rank still go up? If i got second then that would mean that i still beat 3-6 places... Do i still get punished for doing decent?

It depends, but for the most part Yes. I have gotten from master to grandmaster with out a win, so I can 100% confirm that 2nd place can gain you gain mmr.
