What do yall think of awarding a small fraction of skill points to bounties in actual ranked games? That could help disincentivise stalemates and make things more interesting. Of course the fraction of skill points offered so be a lot less than that awarded for the win so suicides are not really incentivised.

I like the idea but the ranking system is already a sore point so i wouldnt get any hopes up. but agreed that player kills could play a role.

@last mica came up with a good system of awarding placement and bounty scores in a way that would disincentivize suicides.

He’s also reverse engineered the FFA rank point system, so is one of the leading experts on the topic

Nice thanks for sharing. Btw I'm still slightly in touch with the warcraft 3 community and they setup their own rankings etc. Coz there is no official ones anymore.

Yeah, that was just my proposal to incorporate bounties into a simplified points system. But it only works playing against similar rank opponents. It's almost the exact opposite of the official tourney bounty system that heavily rewards the first kills which promotes suicides. I guess they believe it is a valid incentive for games with terrible settings to move past the stalemate. I have an idea, how about not have terrible settings? 🤣 tho I digress. It's important in bounty system that the first kill is worth 0. No reward to suiciders for higher placement since it's a flat points system. However, if you get a kill and survive then it wasn't suicide and you get a point for additional kills. Also in wd, the winner must kill at least 1 person to win, so that shouldn't be any additional points, as 1 kill is a given. Also in caps, you don't get the winner wasting time killing the last player unless they already had a kill.

Obviously I would still make tweaks to that proposal for it's implementation in a tourney. It's not currently designed for that.

The negative points are there to reduce the ability to grind to the top if you aren't that good. Without losing points for losing, if you play infinite games even with a terrible win record, you will eventually outrank a better player who is not as active. Simply rewarding activity over skill is something to be avoided. However, if used for tourney the negative points aren't necessary bc everyone plays the same number of games. But again, that's a topic for a different discussion.

Smg has been pretty silent on what system they are going to, but they need to test it first before implementing it to understand what behavior they will promote with it. Once you understand their current system it's painfully obvious that 1v1s are superior for ranking up, and then SMG seems surprised by the results from their own algorithm.

God I hope they don't add bounties to the ranking system, as if suiciding wasn't already a big enough issue, this would increase it ten fold
