The last time I played (4 years ago) there was no alliance or clans, I started playing again yesterday and noticed a lot of changes since then, but my only question is :
Are you required to enter into an alliance?
Will I have tasks that need to be in one?

They are not required. You don't need one. You can get gold from leaderboards and trading with the gold trader in silverton.
