You have to read the mission description especially the words in BOLD from the hunting mission. Very likely you used the weapon that the mission actually specifically requires you not to use it?

Hi Luna~ yes they actually have both kinds so you really have to read carefullyzzz… I didn’t know until I failed it 2-3 times heheheh…..
As I recall… the one requires killing 20 wolfs restricted to melee, 5 mature alligators restricted to rifles/musket 10 American buffalo’s also rifles/muskets
On medium- hard hunting mission that need you to hunt a single high HP target, it could be melee/bow or strictly only rifle/musket
