Splash damage seems to do some level of armor piercing damage, almost ignoring it entirely.
Allied raider cannoneer has no armor piercing on its attack, but in this video you can clearly see armored units in the yellow tiles of the attack are losing health but not much armor. First noticed this against rebel super tanks, and took this video against armadillos.
