I'm interested in seeing what different malware does to a PC but I need to know if it's allowed to do such things or do i have to get a VM?

Pretty sure there is a program that lets u run a vm on your own computer to test out malware but im not sure what its called just seen people online using them for testing malware too

well it's best to do this in a controlled environement (network wise (non-routed network)), this is what could cause you trouble with Shadow

#

for this yes, a local VM is better (VirtualBox/...)

#

also, more efficient than shadow, as you can do "snapshot" (clean vs infected)

on a site note, a lot of malware are hidding or doesn't deploy well on a VM, so it's best on a dedicated local machine (off network too :p)
