Whether I hit "Retry" or continue, it just shows this message, but then fails.

i did that too and they kept saying they "fixed it" and never did

Do you have important files on your VM?

If it's not the case, you can try a Factory Reset.

Shutdown, give it a 10 minutes. Then you try to reset again.

Connection Timeout is different from the OP's problem.
They were stuck on the Update Failed.

What's the error code that is informed along with the Connection Timeout message?
