#Shadow Server Location / Underwater Robot Teleopration

I have been using my Shadow PC for a unique application. We have been using it to remotely control a underwater robot that is semi-permanently submerged on the ocean floor 900m deep at the bottom of the Monterey Bay in California. We found that using Shadow PC to connect really reduce latency and provided a smooth video feed from different places in the world including Italy and Canada (over a Starlink connection). To further improve the experience, I am wanting to know if it is possible to select the general sever location of a new Shadow PC (US West Coast)? Having the server closer to the robot should improve latency and the overall teleoperating experience. Let me know if this possible or if a custom deployment can be made for our application. Thank You.

Holy crap. Underwater telematics through a cloud computing platform. That’s ballsy if you don’t have rock solid failsafes. You could order using a Portland Oregon address to get put in USPOR01, or if you get the A/B test to select a datacenter yourself.

It's safe and low risk. Is there a way to determine where my current Shadow PC is located?

Help menu of the launcher.

Cool! Thanks. Is there a way to force it to use Portand?

Like I said above, you have to use a Portland address, or select the datacenter if you have the option. Cancelling and reordering is the only option as there are no datacenter moves.

I don't remember seeing a option to select datacenter when I signed up. Is there a option?

Under that help menu, I only see list of all 8 shadow PC servers. It doesn't actually show where mine is installed... Can I figure that out somehow?

Maybe those options are only available with certain account types/tiers?

No, should be in the launcher for every client.

Thanks! I have a newer version of the launcher than you do so its in a different spot but I did find it. Looks like I'm connected to Montreal... I'll probably re-signup and see if I can select Portand somehow.

When you say "you have to use a Portland address", do you mean Portland IP address correct? Like, use a VPN set to Portland and then sign up? Can you please clarify

The shop may indeed use your billing information to verify you are located at or near Portland to make sure this is your optimal data center. I highly recommend reaching out to Support if you're concerned about the feasibility of this process, especially if you do not get the ability to choose your own data center. Good luck!

I was wondering that as well, but the billing address I used was California and it still gave me a Montreal datacenter.

Oh that's interesting, then definitely see if it's a bug with Support, maybe they can offer to help move you if it was indeed a website error.

#

And then you won't have to go through the hassle of resubbing 🙂

@sand pilot I did cancel my subscription and but would like to sign up of a new account with a basic "discovery offer" Shadow PC. How can I ensure I get installed in the Portland datacenter? I did not see any options to choose from during signup so I did not complete the process. Thanks

Hey there, before I suggested contacting Support so you wouldn't have to go through the hassle of resubscribing. There's no way to guarantee you can choose your data center. You mentioned you're located in California so I'm not sure why you would not have been activated in Portland in the first place. It's still best to contact Support for guidance.
