#v0.2r1 - seems to want much higher belt tension after upgrades?

Howdy - I just upgraded to double shear motor mounts, CNC XY joints, and a Dragon Burner with an EBB36 (joining the CNC carriage I already had). I initially set the tension to 110 Hz using Sound Spectrum Analysis which measured at 2.10 on the PF Makes tool (first time using it so I wanted a cross-reference), and the results showed the lower frequency hump being much higher amplitude than the higher frequency hump for both belts. I increased the tension a little bit in gradual increments until getting to 2.35, which produced the plots attached. It looks like it still wants more belt tension (and the accels are garbage, was getting 20-30k on both axes before upgrade), but I wanted to check first since I'm already above the stock tension limit of 2.2. The last screenshot I'm including is the belt compare at tension 2.1/110 Hz.

Current slicer settings: didn't think it made sense to print a cube yet

Relevant mods:

  • CNC carriage and XY joints
  • Double shear motor mounts
  • Dragon Burner with Dragon Ace Volcano and Orbiter 2.5
  • EBB36 and U2C
  • It's still apart because I wanted to make sure there weren't any mechanical issues before closing it back up

Printer family & size: v0.2r1

ADXL: ADXL345 onboard the EBB36

Absolute belt tension - PF Makes tool primary, Sound Spectrum Analysis secondary

Thanks!

I also re-belted it when doing the motor mounts and XY joints and I haven’t run anything but shake&tune since then, just thought of that

please ping me or reply to this message so we know u are ready

How many print hours does your printer have?

orchid bluff
#

18h

final zephyr
#

okay.
any reason u are missing the top extrusions between front idlers and motor?

orchid bluff
#

Just haven’t put it back together yet, not confident I won’t have to take it apart again yet

#

Had them off for the motor mount swap

the IS section must have 6 values in total

shaper X
freq X
damping X

shaper Y
freq Y
damping Y

#

use MZV for both

#

outer wall accel: 13.500

Will do, be back with it in a bit

Input shape curves look good

#

my extruder was telling jokes last night so I had to take a break before I told it one of my own, setting up to print the cube now

#

default orca speeds except shifting a couple out of the bad vibe zone

#

default accels and jerks except outer wall 13500

#

using the FM and PA I tuned with the old toolhead (0.97 and 0.06) so they should be fine but probably not perfect

#

do u have a matt black?

orchid bluff
#

I print natural PLA when unenclosed because my cat has respiratory issues, can reprint in black just need to chuck the printer in the closet

#

My experience has been that the clear shows ringing really well though

#

I’ll reprint in black though

orchid bluff
#

Made a speed rules Benchy with the same speed and accel profiles earlier while waiting (25 mins new WR?) and it looks really good except the banding

#

I didn’t have matte black on hand so I used the least glossy black I had

#

I don’t see any ghosting but the banding is not consistent, it’s more prominent around certain features like the tops and bottoms of the slashes on the X faces

final zephyr
#

literally zero ringing

#

PA and EM need tuning but thats it

#

Enjoy your printer, i will mark this as SOLVED

orchid bluff
#

But the accels went down by half when I upgraded to double shears and CNC XY joints

#

I would like them to be at least the same as stock lol but I installed them to try to get an improvement

final zephyr
#

Increase belt tension. U have no mechanical issues

#

Also as the name of this channel, #1308016330326413393 , suggests we focus on basic help here. Your values are within what a normal V0 gets

orchid bluff
#

Yes, I had 28k on Y and 32k on X with the CNC carriage being the only upgrade

final zephyr
orchid bluff
#

I’ll figure it out

orchid bluff
#

It’s because of switching from front of the toolhead to rear PCB ADXL mount + my reverse Bowden tube is a hair short with the new toolhead, after I finish this 18 hour print, reset belt tension, and switch back to the front mount the accels will come back up

@orchid bluff adding double shear and metal xy joints by itself is not going to increase speed/accel/print quality. Double shear allows you to put more tension on the belts. Not sure what metal xy joints will do besides less weight on x-axis.

Stiffening a structure doesn’t lower its resonant frequencies… Will post my results

#

I didn’t save 28k but there’s 25k

#

It’s because of the accel position and my Bowden tube slightly tugging on its mount

silver cloak
#

you actually want to raise the resonant freq to get better accels. This is why tigher belts generally give higher accels. But, you can also introduce VFA

orchid bluff
#

Yes I know that

#

What I said is that stiffer structural components should not have lowered the resonant frequencies

#

There are a lot of engineers in this world outside of the Voron community, you don’t have to immediately dismiss everyone you don’t know out-of-hand

#

I’ll be back to put my money where my mouth is

final zephyr
#

MZV is what u want as shaper

#

CNC carriage adds weight so u have to compensate for it with for example higher tension

#

U have double shear, so give it a try

#

Worst that can happen to your build is belts snap

#

Or front idlers break/printed part

#

Before increasing tension please install the missing extrusions, u need the stability
