for the LIFE of me, i have no clue how to render hair. no matter what i do, it’s always flat, too round, too messy and dirty. so, artists, can you show me how you render your hair??

I'm very new to rendering, especially on the hair scene, so I wouldn't take my advice as clear cut objective truths, but more of something for you to try.
In my drawings I always try to sorta accompany the hair strands, but I mostly just spam lines I'm not gonna lie to you lol, I think it's mostly about good pattern, color choice, and balance.
For example, your first drawing has really pretty rendering on the top part, but it still could've been more rendered, and also the bottom part of the hair is not rendered at all, it doesn't show any strands, it's just a entire blob.
The second drawing's rendering is too weak to be really noticed, the Basil drawing has pretty good rendering but the color is too strong, and it occupies too much space of the original color, and as for the last one, it's not bad, but on the top part of the hair the rendering is just kinda everywhere, and doesn't make any strands on the hair, just makes it look reflective.
So basically, find a color that fits well with hair, it doesn't have to be a darker tone, you could always mess around (like I did in my second drawing, a red-ish color is pretty good for brown hair), and sometimes that ends you with a better result, and like I've said with your third drawing, balance them out, don't let too much of one color seep in.
