After drawing for more than 10 years, my shading still has that ugly “DeviantArt dirty smudge” look to it, how do I improve this? I’ve looked at so many tutorials but the artists made it look so easy and natural while mine always comes off looking like this…. 😞

I know this is 3D, but I was trying to achieve this kind of smooth and natural shading

my first impression is that the lighting isn't very clear in your drawing

#

in the 3d one, theres a clear point where the light comes from and a clear shadow where the light doesnt touch it (left to right)

#

see the difference?

#

your blending isn't bad at al! i recommend maybe slightly blurring the color layer if the brush youre using is kinda streaky

#

what also might help is adding a shadow to the scene like under the shark just like how they did

#

it'll give the illusion your drawing isnt a drawing, but instead an object
