How do I apply back lighting (from the windows at the back) to the subject while highlighting the subject

First of all, great art.
Second i have no idea regarding that, but i do have different advice- now i dont paint so take it with a pinch of salt-.
Your character looks kinda flat, probably because the light source is behind them so they dont really have much shading or highlights. But even though the light source is behind them, it'll still reflect off of stuff lightly, so you should add some shading to them imo~
