I'm trying to improve my art by drawing things that have already been made, but whenever I try to draw, it always ends up looking terrible. Would tracing things, (not other people's art, but stuff like characters from games and etc.), be helpful?

This could be a misunderstanding due to how you phrase that last part, but if you think using references is tracing please don't think so! Using references is not "cheating".
Otherwise yes, tracing can help with training your hand, but that only makes for smoother lines and having an easier time avoiding proportion mistakes, if you need to improve on something else like anatomy, perspective etc, tracing doesn't really help that much.
And don't forget to always credit the game and say your art is traced if you ever post a traced piece ofc.
