Hi, so I've recently picked up the medium and I'm struggling to make this look realistic...it seems my darks aren't dark enough and my brights nearly not as bright enough. I need help. The picture quality isn't fantastic, the charcoal was a lot smoother but this is what I've done. I have not finished I'm focusing on the left leg primarly.
#Need help using charcoal to draw leg muscles.

i think if you hadnt colored in the background it would have been easier to mimic the values. Its really hard to get charcoal to be lighter once you have put it on the page, so i suggest starting really light then focusing on the darkest areas and putting those on the page and kind of blending out and blocking the other tones from there
Thank you!
I actually did it again with a white background
Worked wonders
Thank you! My art teacher was shocked, this is my second time using charcoals, the first one i send was my first
You’re really right about making the background white
It’s just i saw another artist on twitter cover the whole paper with charcoal to make highlights easier
But it just didn’t work in my case…
i think rhats because your reference has a pretty light background already ^^ If you want to retry that tactic n feature pieces i recommend making yourself some charcoal shavings by running an exacto knife along your charcoal. The dust should be easier to run across the page and keep the color lighter
but in general its a good idea to keep your pieces background same value as the references. It will be easier to judge and read other colors that way
