I can help you if you tell me where do you want the light source in the picture to be
like for example in front of them or behind or to some side
Easiest explanation of light and shading: imagine your light source has eyes, and is looking at your characters or whatever. whatever it sees will be covered in light while the things it cant see will be shadowed
for example: if theirs a block with a light source infront of it, there will be a shadow behind the block because it can't "see" the back of the block.

The lighting you might want to use might also depending on the type of vibe or like mood you want to convey in a certain piece. Really harsh or bright lighting can convey a really excited or lively mood, while softer, warmer lighting gives you more calming vibes. Studying color theory also helps a lot with shading, such as using complementary colors for shading.
Other than that, keep practicing and use lots of references!
A lovely trick I like to do is setting a layer to "multiply" and clipping an "add" layer above it! It's good for general ambiance
