I made this character from a dream I had but I feel his design is rather too simple, and I want him to have that "main character" vibes while still not ruining his simplistic style. If you have any question about it feel free to ask me (Btw: tell me if he's similar to an existing character and I copied it/took inspiration from it without noticing pls).
PD: I'd really appreciate visual examples 🙏
#How can I make his design more interesting while keeping it simple?

I think that poncho is way too simple, maybe you could change it to open it up, or add something extra like this belt I did
or you could add some accessories like maybe these bread earrings
also your character looks a lot like Wayne from hylics but tasty lmao
apart from the clothing ofc
hi,
before i put in my two cents, i want to mention that, and i mean this in a nice way, there is no such thing as an original idea. every new media comes from something before it (Requiem for a Dream has a scene inspired by Perfect Blue. There are numerous action scenes in anime where they come from movies like Winter Soldier.)
that's not a bad thing! don't compare or worry that your art is "copying" someone else. imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, after all.
i think A LOT might be an overstatement, its only the head shape.
more than fair enough, although he def gives Wayne vibes, with that clothing style and just that :| look
this also applies to EVERY media out there, whether its music or shows. it is how we interpret and make the art is what makes it unique (i.e: akira bike slide: https://www.reddit.com/r/Cyberpunk/comments/169ry3e/the_famous_bike_slide_scene_from_akira_1988/)
To AGuyNamedLeandro, thanks! I think that the poncho shouldnt open up but it's a really good idea to make it's design more complex, and yeah now that you mention I totally see the Wayne vibes and it makes sense knowing I like Hylics that much
hell yeah hylics gang
To @willow patrol, TYSM, I really needed to listen those words in such a well written way! But for real thank you, you've gave me a huge relief 💆♂️
Art is a mental thing as much as it is a physical thing. do not worry about copying as long as you arent blatantly stealing it.
outside of that, let me put in my two cents.
What i reccomend doing is making differing designs of the same character. mess with the shape of its silhouette. experiment with different designs. (ex: early Mercy concept design from overwatch 1: https://i.pinimg.com/736x/2b/64/ec/2b64ec0dac4f3a080f849724fbcb3261.jpg )
whenever i make a new character i make a pinterest folder of them and look around to see what kind of aesthetic and design this character is going to be. Are they a traveler? a fighter? healer? bard? its design should reflect their story or what they represent.
Omg haha i love zour croissant man
Darker tones
That's a good idea, I'll see how to play around the character's concept and maybe read a thing or two about character's concept art and character design theory
Yeah, Pinterest is really good for references, I'll see what I find. This creation was kinda messy/unexpected since I literally sketched this right when I woke up and then I left it there until night which is when I tried figuring out what to do 😅
Thanks!
Would you care to elaborate a little bit? (Like, darker tones on the color palette?)
Anyways, I'll post my progress in a week or two on this little croissant man, thanks for the feedback everyone!
I'd say it is done! (almost, I just need to draw a proper background now) But anyways I'd say it was a fun (and exhausting) experience to go drawing and deleting accesories for Nassior, comparing designs, etc. I took longer than expected for such little changes 😅. It actually was a good idea to open the poncho @brisk marten! The only thing I forgot about was looking for references on pinterest 😔
Now I'd like general critiques overall, though the only issue I've noticed with this is that the buttons are supposed to be from meringe but don't look like it
Oh yeah now he has proper dough hands since he has a gun 👀
this is really nice
as far as general cristicism goes, I'd say the clothing folds aren't entirely correct and there's too much of it, especially on the legs, there's also not much detail on the actual character's part, so it gives a weird contrast between high detailed clothing and the basic character
but like I said, pretty nice
