I think your Style is already pretty perfect. I really love the "rough" look and the flat coloring.

Obviously you could switch from flat colors to a more rendered style, with softer shadows and highlights.

But I believe you could quite simply "enhance" your Art without changing the style:

  • Ensure you understand your Light Sources and their Angles. Is the Sunlight coming from the left or above? Is there an additional Light source in front of the Character?
  • Add more distinct highlights, like a bright Rim Light on the Characters.
  • Add a white layer above all the existing layers and change its blend mode to "Color". This way allows you to check if the Color Values are correct. If the Color Values are too similar, your Image will look flat and nothing will stand out.
  • Adjust the Brightness of each Background Layer to further separate them from each other.
  • Use Gradients to give subtle Light Variations.
  • When you are done with your Image, apply a Brightness & Contrast Filter to make the colors more vibrant. I use this myself often because otherwise my colors tend to look a bit grey / washed out.

Just knowing where my Light Sources are in my Scene helped me a lot.

The 3 Images below hopefully help illustrate what I mean.

Try adding some Arrows to indicate the Direction in which the Lights are shining.
This would help us understand the Lighting Setup you're trying to achieve in this drawing.

Currently, the light appears to be shining from the left, the upper right, and the Shadow on the Eyes kind of implies a Light Source from beneath.
In your previous images, the ones with more hair or half-closed eyes, the shadow seemed appropriate, but in this case, it doesn't quite fit.

Below are 2 "quick & dirty Version" with only 1 Light Source and with 2 Light Sources + the advice I gave before.
The (1) Main Light comes from the top right and a (2) Rim Light from the left side.
The red and white Highlights will make the Character stand out more (pop) and also add some more depth.
