#I need help understanding shading

Do you use Clip Studio? If not- most digital art programs have similar multilayer functionality so: Make another layer above you're colors and lines. Change its type to multiply and fill you're character with or any dark colors. You can get as close to black as you want because you can just change the opacity of this layer to adjust for brightness. Example 1
Step 2: Take a soft eraser OR a transparent paint brush and just practice erasing the gray tone in reference to the lights position. Practice this enough until it looks good to your eyes as shadows and shading is ALWAYS dependent on lots of factors. I wouldnt worry about it too much on a white background. To be honest your shading looks fair. If your working with light anime -ish colors start referencing characters with google.
Lastly- you can change the desired result by adjusting the intensity (opacity) of the graytone layer. Some artist will just fill the entire canvas with gray to give the piece a bit more of a spacious feel. I learned this tip while watching an artist for the fighting game King of Fighters show a timelapse years ago and never looked back.
Example 2/3:
It wiill take time to get used to but you'll grasp the technique eventually.. Also try different brushes and pens to erase or even add grays. Remember reference pics are an artists best friend and google makes that infinitely easier!
Exampples of the technique in my art:
Hmm if I tried a little bit more, but I can't decide to where the shadow of her hand shall fall or not.
I think your shading is really good!
For the hand I think maybe its best for a small on her upper chest. BUT I would say its fine as it is. Fingers dont carry much weight in some circumstances when directed by light! Yu did fine in that regard 🙂
Thank you I guess... I try to make the ligting now and for some reason I can't find a way to make it work any suggestions?
@rich python
Hmmm. Is there a certain reference example (image) that you're going for that I can look at.
It looks fine to me. Tbh you did a great job. Are you trying yo blend two lightsources?
One light source, but I am trying to imitate the light of a fire torch.
the only refrence was more for the model
like those. I censored the last one.
Oh!okay I get it. You want a simple light ray refraction of the edge of her body. Wih this you want to sparingly make an inward outline od a vibrant color (if that makes any sinse lol). Im not near my computer right now but when I get back I'll give you some examples on how to achieve this!
@rich python ?
