I agree that the second one looks more elevated but i also think first one looks better composition wise.

On the second one your eye focuses first on the monsters glowy mouth then the mages magic but then it goes out of the page since there is nothing else to focus on.

Having three focus points is a good way of keeping the attention of the viewer cycling on the page. And when the archer has a lighter color value it does just that.

You can maybe try to make the arrow super shiny or make a part of the outfit lighter but the rest darker to get the best of both worlds?
