I would love tips on shading, color, and making my lil fellas feel alive and more finished instead of looking like a wip. It takes so much work to shade on IBIS and it just looks bad? Ignore the paper, I was exhausted at that point. I love this work but it looks like a WIP, and the shading is really unoptimal and painfully manual. Thank you!
#I'm trying very hard but I'm just not sure how to get everything right

Could you show me your dream style, so that I know where to direct you?
Sort of an industrial horrific dystopia colors and shading with cartoon characters like so.
I don't know how to explain it
It sounds like you're going for a syle similar to Bendy? Sorta like this:
@potent solar It looks like your color choices are based upon already existing characters? Knowing this, you will have to work around creating a harmonious piece with a restricted color palette. Understanding the basics of color, such as complimentary, triadic, analogous and monochromatic will greatly help your wip’s look more finished and complete.
This video covers this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qj1FK8n7WgY&t=11s
Why Color is so important, Saturation and Value and six Color Harmonies that work.

Next, your values could be improved by sorting them into groups. As we can see from your wip, when we set it to grayscale the values look randomly placed and don’t work together as a whole.
To solve this, we can blur the background, make the background darker or brighter than the characters, and outline the characters. We could also darken the characters and blur the background. There are so many ways to create a good composition, you just have to experiment and see what works and what doesn’t.

Asking the questions, “why am I drawing this?” “how am I going to achieve this?” “Do I know how to draw this” “What references and skills will I need to be successful?”... before creating anything will direct you in a more logical direction.
If you want to level up your art fast, which will require some sacrifice and less time towards drawing fun things, I would recommend learning the basics of form, perspective, and line quality. When learning each of these concepts, study from other artists, watch tutorials, draw from life, and then test your knowledge by applying what you learned without reference. This should be a periodic process.
