I usually try to figure out values using any monotonic palette before starting to color! it helps with readability and its easier to mess around and pick which lighting is better for the piece! so my process would usually look like sketch> greyscale>shading in that scale>then using that as a reference for what values my shades/color should have>then you can adjust the colors and their values on the way if it feels like it could use smth else
I would also recommend observing other arts either by your favorite artists or just favorite styles as well as just looking at references and trying to understand why smth works this way
it doesn't necessarily have to be perfect but it'll give you a general direction to go in :) !
I also would recommend using gradients between colors and not just going from one tone to the other to lessen the contrast but again you could always try and incorporate hard lighting in your style nothing wrong with that
Hey, thanks for the feedback!
Yes, i have trouble with ligthning and especially when it comes to clothing folds
the part about observing values hits true, and i actually tried to start painting in grayscale first with this piece, but i got impatient and wanted to get to coloring flats after a while-
And i defenitely should use more reference when drawing clothes especially
np!
