i have no idea why the colours look so desaturated here wait-
click the image for true colours!!
i think the only critique i have is on the tall one in the middle- im not sure if it's their shirt, but it feels like their legs aren't big/tall enough for the rest of their proportions. that could just be me though !
i actually designed him with stubby legs but now that you mentioned it yeah it does look a little off.. he’s meant to be the gentle giant of the group just a little fun fact!
but yeah i totally see your point and i may change it tomorrow because it’s almost 12pm here,, thank you so much for the feedback i appreciate it!! ✨
no prob !! i legit thought it might just be my brain lol
Hello!!
So if youre going for character lineups with cohesive design- first you want to break down and firt try breaking it down into shape motif first.
Especially for a character lineup - repeating shape design (ie: if a character has noticable shape language and motif in their design) is always pleaisn is always pleasing to the eye.
Hold on.
For a oticeable charming and interesting character, the character must be able to be broken down into a three colour palette: you seem to have achieved that with the big white purple and pink clown, the ringmaster, the red blue and yellow one and the green pink and white one. and the blue pink and yellow clown.
However I have concernes about this character due to the confusion on the colour ? black white and then maybe pink? but its used more as a complementary than a cohesive colour. I would say make the bow they wear pink to bring it together more.
Second- shape design.
Ill do them in order of what catches my eye- this ones good, however i would recommend making the legs more baggy, and the shoes boots possibly more defined toes so they more emphasis clown shoes.
Maybe also simplifying hair to include this shape motif would work better- and bringing the hat over the head? since im kind of confused about how seeming its not even over his ears and its a bit confusing as to how its on his head in the first place.
If this is indeed a character lineup, you need to make your silhouettes more readable. they need to be able to be read in just black and white if you want something memorable.
your stuff is good, it just needs a more clear shape language.
for example capitalising on the shape motifs, which i noticed in the shape language.
now on to other stuff.. ill bullet point.
- look at some ringleader jacket refs, there are inconsistencies with your design that set it off. add shoulder pads, modify waistcoat.
- dont be afraid to really SHARPEN that language. i get dangerous vibes from him, and danger is sharp.
- sharp means making the ears sharp, the lapels sharper, and the boots too, espec the boots. also maybe the eyes.
- final recomm: do something fun with the cane. a little wolf maybe. like i said i feel like hes a danger to cross, and maybe it could be a nod to his dangerous side.
Ok im getting kinda tired so ill bullet the rest
- remove the tufy hair thingies for her, emphasis the CIRCLES shape language
- tassled poms confuse shape language, switch to poms of end of ckirt
- nitpicky but change the shoes to blue and skirt to yellow to unite the colour language.
- finally may i suggest instea dof using flowers and small.. leafs? i think? that you added to her skirt, might add the same tear pattern thats on her face makeup?
- i see you with that pinata. capitalise it. the shape motif i pick up is tassles, and itd be really banger if it was emphasies with the frils, socks, ruffles, etc
- possibly a more loc-style hairstyle that also works with the shape motif. the hairstlye is slighty throwing me off but again thats up to your conception
maybe also making her face makeup reflect it more.
- this is a pretty solid design but needs some more star emphasis to make it really stick.
- emphasis star language on: charms on jester hats, the collar, the hair, the trim of the shirt, the cuffs of the pants.
- i notice youre generally always leaning into the one swoop hairstyle.. where theres a middle lock that curs over. i recommend trying to diverse your style of hairstyles in general for memorable chaearacters but i understand this is a newapppraoch so ill let it passs for now.
maybe give him a different hairstyle but again artist preference.. i dont get why hes holding a magnifying glass. it doesnt play into his design at all.. so get rid of it or make sure it fits thematically.
ok i FINALLY figured out what the shape language of this was - hearts!! but it was so confusing and not so clear. perhaops its because of the use of black bows that threw me off with the hearts. it muddies the water. i dont have any complaints about the silhouette. its pretty solid-
- unite the bow 3with the rest of the coolur language bymaking it pink ( so as to define pink as the third colour and thus making her colour language pink purple white.
or black? i think its blakc actually
- make the collar of hers heart shaped and make the bows HEARTS..
- make the shoes white to again, unite colour lanuage.. potenitally dye them red, she seems like a femme fatale and my recommendation is to make the tips of the shoes have a heart on them or make the strap a heart shape.
artist reocmmendation is also to add hearts to white skirt. but thats to artist preference.
for the final one, i dont think their silhouette is clear enough for me to add to it hence why it was left out, but i really like the design used, even if you did crutch back into the middle lock and sides hairstyle prominent in ur characters. all i would say is add bells to the end of this silly fellows shoes and make their shape language clearer next time, i understand it was prolly to show off the clockwork key detail.
ok thats it, thanks for reading thru the long ramble. : 3 in conclusion i really like ur characters!! these small modifications could make them better and i really like the designs!!
OH MY GOSH this is why i love art servers so much.. the critiques here are AWESOME!!
your feedback is so in-depth and you’re pointing out so many flaws that i’m right now only noticing. all the shape motifs you caught are surprising really accurate (i should’ve made it a little more obvious ahgebwjeh)
here is it in order:
circles, stars, pompoms, popcorn, hearts, piñata (the pointy ones), sharp angles, rounded angles
i’ll definitely work on all these changes (maybe tonight or tomorrow because today i’m busy) but yeah!! thank you for all the comments i really feel like i can make the lineup 100x better than it was 💖✨💖✨
here made most of the changes you suggested!! :3 💜💙 i am already so much happier with this thank you!! 🪐✨
