When I'm sketching something it looks good and I do a little bit of hair and it messes everything up. I don't want to go all out on hair on a sketch though?

i think the hair doesn't ruin it like u think, i do think that you could make sure your pencil strokes follow the flow of the hair which wont make it feel as flat, also u can get away with a more graphic approach even in realistic drawings if u know what i mean

and also maybe break up some of the shapes of the loose strands with some being big, medium or small
