What I feel like about the story is that Hades is for sure trying to protect Zagreus from either the other Gods (or maybe just Zeus), or from Persephone herself. Seeing as in the mythology she isn't well in the head at some points.
Maybe Hades doesn't want him to leave but tests him to see if he's strong enough to be able to handle thing on the surface.
I think it's overall pointless to discuss abuse when we're talking about immortal gods and people who being inflicted pain to is absolutely normal. They live in the Underworld where monsters are common and kill anyone who tries to escape, without a care for who you are.

Sometimes a prophecy is related to them, sometimes you need to have certain conversations with them (all about that luck)
I suggest not to spoil but if you're stuck just check the wiki or ask here
After completing their favor you resume gifting them to unlock their other hearts and eventually complete the gauge only this time you give them AMBROSIA, not nectar
Was there a chara you were stuck with? I can give you some nudges if that frustrates you
Also, some characters have a clock instead of a lock, don't mind those, it's basically "hey just wait for this it hasn't been added yet, we're in EA so it still isn't finished"

If I were to earn bounties on a run with heat higher than the next minimum amount, what happens to the bounty rewards meant to be earned at lower heat levels? So I played the game with my girlfriend watching, she studied mythology a lot, and she filled in some gaps in the lore for me, which was neat
Like how the world is icy cold because Persephone, Demeter’s daughter is missing, and she’s brought an eternal winter until Persephone is found..

I actually have no idea how to do a fully boonless run. Sometimes you're just guaranteed to go through a room that has a boon (and if you try to reroll boons into poms/hearts/obols you will just run out of rerolls at some point), plus miniboss rooms always have boons as a reward.

And take the other options as much as you can.

The most simple way to put the ending in is right after you beat Dad the first time
But you probably won't experience a lot of things without unlocking the stuff that comes after beating dad
