Rail: Insane Radius spread with the right set up, but never the less is like a very average on the start since it covers in range and while can be used to focus on one enemy you can go for multiple enemies without a sweat.
Spear: Attack like crazy and basically the core set up for every backstab/poision builds. Special and hold attack can get trickery since one may have you end up loosing bit of health another does little damage unless you get some good stuff for it.
Shield: can get you carried away by focusing on blocking too much, otherwise can be swift or quite the heavy hitter. Special especially good in filled rooms.
Bow: possibly the best in the big rooms, but sucks in small closed areas, but again special is nice with specific aspect and genuinely makes the weapon better. The main attack is good as long as you don't end up making it charge up long.
Sword: nice and steady, special forever is risky at times, while it deals good damage to nearby enemies, does charge up quite slow, but pays off anyway. Works well with almost any boon, due to how simple it is.

I'm not sure I'll ever 'get' the rail. Every good run I've had with it has been due to a combination of boons/hammers that makes it play like...not itself. And up until that point (if I'm lucky enough to get there), it's just a real clunky bow.

It sounds like dumb advice. But a lot of it is about using the distance to your advantage.
In terms of rail. Try to special as much as possible. Get used to pressing it consistently while learning the cooldown. It does good damage and doesn't pause you for long unlike other specials.
Especiaaaaally if you get the hammer upgrade that makes it a rocket

Best advice I can give is that you should think of the bow and rail attack/special in reverse.
The rail Attack and Bow special benefit best from procs or set instances of damage. I.E. Poison or Zeus lightning. Since the Lightning from Zeus is a set damage number, multiple shots of a small attack are better than large attacks.
The bow attack or rail special are best suited from things like pure damage buffs, like Athena or Aphrodite. Or even something like Ares, since the curse tends to proc between times you can actually use the attack/special.

I haven't experienced the conversations at all when giving Ambrosia to any that are available to it. I'm trying to give Thanatos one. I get now he's a bit slippery to track in escape, but I've given him six nectars. I've encountered him (in tartarus) after doing so and saw him in the house after. It didn't give me the option there to give any (though there was the scene with them drinking? I don't think that's it). There's still the lock on the seventh heart. Am I just not encountering this event that's supposed to happen (I looked on the Wiki and it said there would be an event)? Sorry for the confusion ;-; I'm just trying to figure all this out.

The thing with Achilles/Patroclus was less about their relationship themselves (who knows if they even existed lol), and more about how they became icons in ancient greece for the type of intense (generally sexual) bond greek warriors would have for eachother where dying for each other was romanticized. The most famous one was probably Alexander the Great who also came to declare the bond between him and Hephaestion to be only matched by Achilles and Patroclus in a very dramatic speech at their joint grave
