Try to increase the heat 1/1 to get Blood, diamonds and stuff. There is a lot of little things you can do to help you during your runs (and the mirror too)

As for not sucking with the shield, I highly encourage using the other weapons, if for no other reason than that The shield gets extremely boring given how OP blocking is.

Its really just understanding what's good for the weapon and how to use it.
For example, when I first started the game, I honestly hated the Stygian Blade. Now, it's my favorite weapon.

Poseidon Aspect makes the Stygian Blade Nuts.
Being able to spam Casts feels great, and the casts doing more damage makes them even better.
Shatter Shot is stupid op with Artemis boons, for example. Casual 2400 crit damage is nice.
