At least the female protag got to show up again

Here is to hoping Persona 6 lets you date the guys too

raven harbor

Please

vivid ridge

not if they keep the director

odd grove

No

#

No

raven harbor

IIRC he's already stepped down

Listen, we need SMT V

hasty kernel
#

Whats this about the director?

odd grove
#

Persona has had it too good for too long

#

I need a goddamn SMT game with actual good fusion

Play BBTAG

raven harbor

At least there's just No Hope for it, instead of FE3H's "only two of these options are actually mlm"

hasty kernel

You get all the good P4A characters

#

But also Tank

fervent zenith
#

But I want to play Joker And live on a society

odd grove
#

Yeah honestly...

#

It's just upsetting

#

Not something to disregard the game

raven harbor
#

I'm still mad about Alois

odd grove
#

But seeing the attention went mostly to the lesbians makes me kind of sad

#

What about Alois

raven harbor
#

His S rank is explicitly not romantic

#

Where you give him a Best Friendship Ring Like Bros Do and go off to marry unnamed women

#

Your other option is Lindheart

#

And then they added one and it also wasn't great

vivid ridge
#

the same sex s ranks in 3 houses aren't explicitly gay

#

just really good bros who do bro stuff

fervent zenith
#

Ok I didn't play 3H is as bad as Soleil?

#

I honestly can dig a well written Bromance tho

raven harbor
#

You and Linhardt literally get married

#

Which, fine, cool, I didn't care for him but he's not bad

#

But you're telling me I can't romance Claude Von Reigan

#

Really

vivid ridge
#

unlike the ones in fates where it is pretty much 100% gay

raven harbor
#

Or Demitri

vivid ridge
#

not everyone can have DJ Khalid

fervent zenith
#

Yeah we need to talk to the CEO of Homophobia like, right now

raven harbor
#

Also I kind of wish they like

#

Differentiated romantic and non-romantic S ranks in some fashion

vivid ridge
#

in my mind's eye i picture edelgard's s support

#

but it's the minion version

odd grove
#

Wait i just thought something

fervent zenith
#

They need to differentiate between 'I love you, bro' and 'I love you, bro'

odd grove
#

Are all females in FE3H romanceable for both male and fem Byleth?

raven harbor
#

Looks like they did add another one in the Ashen Wolf DLC, so that's uh... 5. Two of which are barely to not at all romantic, and one of which is a murder villain

vivid ridge
#

only some are gay

faint panther
#

Thanks, Japan.

raven harbor
#

I'm not seeing any exclusive romance options for female Byleth?

odd grove
#

Or bi?

vivid ridge
#

and when they are the straight versions are scuffed

odd grove
#

So they are bi, like all of them?

vivid ridge
#

only some are bi

odd grove
#

Ah, good

raven harbor
#

I haven't pored through the endings so some also could be explicitly non-romantic

odd grove
#

Making everyone bi doesn't feel right at all

fervent zenith
#

In my opinion, the MC should be whatever you like and the Romance options depending of sex

#

I already talked here about it

raven harbor
#

Like I said, I wish they'd let you know who ends up romantic vs platonic

#

It would do a lot to alleviate things

faint panther
#

Definitely like staring into the abyss.

odd grove
#

How can you do that in a game, in an obvious, well written way

fervent zenith
#

I don't want all my companions to be pansexual thirsty guys 3 conversations away of shagging me. I want them to have AGENCY

raven harbor
#

X color for romantic, Y for platonic

odd grove
#

Hm, honestly i'm really concerned about game writing cuz i sorta wanna work with that in the future

raven harbor
#

Or they just like, tell you in a support convo

#

Or make it Sr rank and Sp rank

#

Literally any indicator of "this character is not interested in you romantically" would be better

fervent zenith
#

@raven harbor In greedfall if you try to romance a non compatible character they tell you outright on the first quest

#

You can still Bromance them

raven harbor
#

See, that's fantastic

#

And sometimes you just want a bromance and that's wonderful

vivid ridge
#

the edelgard one is also goofy straight because she just explains her plans then calls you her friend

#

truly byleth is the biggest simp in this holy war

raven harbor
#

Look I'm just mad I only got to romance one of the three house leaders

#

Instead of uhhhhhhhhh

#

Choosing from all three

#

Seems Fair

fervent zenith
#

Like, there are 5 companions, one straight guy, one straight girl, one bi guy, one bi girl, and a straight guy you can't romance period because he is older and sees you as family

raven harbor
#

That makes sense

fervent zenith
#

And the romance quests are about building trust

odd grove
#

Hoenstly, yeah

#

Anyhow... Writing is hard and threatening, surely!

fervent zenith
faint panther
#

Okay, so we all agree that light novel names by and large suck.

#

There's no translating them gracefully into English or likely any other language because they're horrible mouthfuls even in Japanese.

#

So when these mooks imported Baka and Test and I look up the Japanese title and it should be the simplest garbage ever to directly translate makes for that for a nice snappy title, some idiot screws it up by a mixed Japanese/English title, it makes me want to not watch it at all.

Oh, I was taking a peek at Black Book. It sure seems interesting!

hasty kernel
#

I wonder, was any greek god faithful to their significant other?

#

Hades I guess

desert minnow
#

And Hephaestus

#

A lot of them are, it’s just that Zeus, Poseidon and Aphrodite kinda give the others a bad rep

wide ember
#

Hephaestus didn't

#

he tried to get it on with Athena

#

Echidna and Typhon were faithful to each other, apparently

hasty kernel
#

I mean Ares isnt really faithful either

#

Artemis is Ace so she doesnt count

#

Huh, Apollo never married

wide ember
#

had too many lovers though

hasty kernel
#

Yeah but its not being unfaithful if you break up

#

/never marry

wide ember
#

true, but what he did to Cassandra means he wasn't a good person

hasty kernel
#

He is a greek god

#

Although it depends on the version of the myth

#

In some she broke a promise

wide ember
#

she changed her mind, no need to go that far

autumn pasture
#

right

#

dumping someone isn't a reason to curse them

hasty kernel
#

Look Im not saying that he didnt overreact even in the context of that version

#

But you really shouldnt break a promise you made to a greek god

wide ember
#

there was a woman who, after being stolen away by Poseidon, said that she wanted to become a man so this would never happen again, and Poseidon not only made her a man, he made his skin invulnerable to all weapons

#

apollo could've fixed some things when the illiad was happening

#

nope

hasty kernel
#

Again, he is a greek god

#

The only greek god who was alright was Hestia

#

I think

wide ember
#

Artemis is alright too, she only had the hunter who saw her bathe turned into deer because he wasn't being polite about it, and the hunter who did the same but was polite got turned into a huntress

#

(how the same pond didn't get swarmed by hunters trying to become huntresses later is anyone's guess)

#

Hades is also alright

hasty kernel
#

Again depends on the version

#

In some he was just unlucky

#

And Artemis transformed him so he could be torn to shreds by his dogs

desert minnow
#

Hades is
Mostly alright if you don’t piss him off and go with the version where Persephone was ol with being on the underworld

hasty kernel
#

Also Callisto

desert minnow
#

Heph is generally an ok dude too

hasty kernel
#

I mean even in the version where Demeter was ok with it, he did kidnap her

wide ember
#

um, after the Athena incident, I'm not sure about Hephaestus

desert minnow
#

Athena is uuuuuuh
It heavily depends on the version and generally whether the myth is atenian or not and- wait, the athena incident?

wide ember
#

ritual kidnapping was more like arranged marriage back then

#

Hades did a ritual kidnapping, not a kidnapping in our sense of the word

desert minnow
#

Oh wait yeah
Hephaestus did try to assault athena

hasty kernel
#

Yup

wide ember
#

and did that on her legs too

hasty kernel
#

Again, in some versions

#

The only major god who as far as I can tell had no versions in which they did something bad

#

Was Hestia

desert minnow
#

Yeah
Hestia was surprisingly respected on ancient greece

wide ember
#

what of Harmonia? has she done anything?

hasty kernel
#

She just kicked titan butt and then took care of the hearth

#

I wouldnt call Harmonia major

desert minnow
#

Also i’d say Prometheus also counts as a swell dude if you count gods as gods overall and not just the Olympians

hasty kernel
#

Minor gods and goddesses were less likely to do something bad

autumn pasture
#

prometheus was right

desert minnow
#

Gave us fire and the juicy bits of sacrifices

wide ember
#

of Olympians, only Hestia has intact reputation

north hamlet
#

Only by modern standards tbh

wide ember
#

unless you count Ganymede?

desert minnow
#

Apollo: hey, some guy is about to marry his mother without knowing who she is, should i tell him before they get married?
Nah, i know. I’ll let them get married and then send a plague upon their city as punishment. Great plan, me.

hasty kernel
#

I mean yes different times different ideas of morals but

#

The greek gods were still not great by the standards of their time

north hamlet
#

Yeah their ideas of how gods were was like that

hasty kernel
#

I do have to say

#

I like how its just one big mess of bad people

#

And you just have a kindly old grandma keeping the fire stoked in the background

desert minnow
#

Actually, i think there were critiques that plays and stories made the gods too human, so a lot of the stuff we got was likely exaggerated versions of the gods proper

#

Emphasis on think, been a while since i did greek

fervent zenith
#

Why is the Pantheon full of jerks?

wide ember
#

wasn't it something along the line of gods were props?

#

like, they were characters, but the foreground is left to human characters, and gods existed mostly as props to get the play moving

hasty kernel
#

Deus ex Machina and all that

#

Personally I think it might also have just been an attempt to make the chaos of the world make sense

#

Bad things happen because the gods suck

#

It kinda eases the mind

faint panther
#

Religion arises from a few things: Worrying about what happens after we die, someone wants to grift billions of people, or someone is trying to make sense of horrible things happening, to name a few.

#

(In my super edgy armchair philosopher view).

hasty kernel
#

Id say the biggest one is just trying to find explanations how the world works

#

"Big shiny ball keeps rising up and going down. Must be man dragging shiny ball accross sky"

#

Eventually you determine the things that do and dont make sense

#

And religion usually just adapts

wide ember
#

that wasn't what my teachers said though, it was more like they knew that wasn't how it was done, they were scapegoating

hasty kernel
#

"I see that the ships go below the horizon if they travel far enough. The earth must be round"

#

"Now the world is no longer a disc held up by 4 elephants standing on a turtle"

#

I mean eventually perhaps

#

Religions persist even past the point where they make sense (see the 7 days of creation thing)

#

But originally, before religions were even quantified in words

#

I do think that that was the big reason

#

And then the story just got more and more absurd as every writer tried to introduce a new twist

wide ember
#

I mean by antiquity

#

sure, there are devouts in any era, but most just

#

it was something to project on

hasty kernel
#

Yeah by that point it mightve just been a nice set of stories you could work with

wide ember
#

unrelated, but how I wish I could do like motoko kusanagi and have several bodies right now

#

Teleportation and flight are both tempting superpowers but shapeshifting is my jam

wide ember
#

I also want immunity to all diseases

faint panther
#

Teleportation with any sort of accuracy and range is busted.

wide ember
#

but in order to use teleportation, you'll also need some kind limited omniscience

#

since you need to know if the place you are teleporting to is empty air or not, least you teleport inside a solid block of kitchen counter or something

faint panther
#

That's the accuracy.

wide ember
#

faint panther

Teleportation.

#

wide ember

faint panther
#

Yup.

north hamlet
#

Bonus points if you can apport as well

wide ember
#

if I can freely generate new bodies wherever I want, wouldn't I enjoy some benefits of teleportation while having increased productivity?

faint panther

'There's also one issue that doesn't get discussed much... in public. InĀ privateĀ it induces attacks of stark, apoplectic terror in politicians, business leaders, and anyone interested in seeing Japan continue as anything like a world power. Simply put, the Japanese seem to have forgotten how to make babies.'

wide ember
#

that's just to shift blame

#

most Japanese refuse to make babies because they won't be able to afford a baby

#

fix the economy first, and they'll observe a baby boom

fervent zenith
#

Ever since the post-World War IIĀ baby boom, the birthrate in Japan has fallen like a stone. It now hovers at around 7 per 1000 - the lowest birthrate of a full nation in the entire world. Meanwhile, the death rate has steadily creptĀ upĀ as those baby boomers age and die. And several years ago, the death rate officially outnumbered the birth rate, and Japan's population began toĀ contract. As the Japanese allow very, very few people to immigrate permanently, this essentially means that birth is the only way they have of growing or even sustaining their population - and that isn't happening.

The causes are widely debated — independent women not wanting the burden of a family, Japanese menĀ being overworked and not very attractive mates, social pressures to not have many children, the sluggish economy, some combination thereof, something else,Ā Ā there's no obvious answer. But the result is clear: deaths outnumber births, and even with a larger overall population compared to several decades ago, there are fewer and fewer children in Japan. The current median age of the Japanese population is 45.

#

burden of a family, overworked men are both part of the economy

faint panther
#

If you're planning to play regularly on your system (and also newer games) I'd recommend a rolling-release system. There are only a few that are RR and are good: Arch Linux, OpenSuse Tumbleweed or the best of course: Solus. :)
I don't recommend Manjaro (it's based on Arch, but buggy and a bit arcane), but you could also try that, as it has a good first glance experience. But Solus is fantastic imho. (getsol.us)

#

The reason for RR is: the most recent Wine and Lutris versions. And also recent drivers if you're using proprietary nvidia. For AMD it doesn't matter, default kernel drivers are good enough usually.

#

Wine is the compatibility layer that lets you run Windows apps/games fluently on your system and Lutris is a game library/starter tool that lets you start windows games that way you need them to (eg. older or more recent dxvk/wine/proton versions, whichever works best).

fringe sparrow
#

I had using Lutris, 5.8 or something for HAdes it was running without anything more to config.

#

Whats the shell your recommend? Gnome is default under Ubuntu, but also heard its bugged in latest versions

#

So it might causing issues for me too

faint panther
#

Why would you use Lutris for Hades? Usually Steam handles the start via Proton, so no need to emulate Steam via Lutris in the first place, unless you run into issues with Proton of course.

fringe sparrow
#

I dont have to turn on Steam

#

the Hades is drm free

#

and yeach i was not even able to execute Hades using steam (via proton)

faint panther
#

not sure about appropriate naming, gnome is not only a shell, but a full stack of things. Also Gnome is integrated tightly in Solus, but it's not buggy, at least not for me. Not sure what you're referring to. You should never really see "Gnome" anywere, as it runs in the background or just supplies functions or apps for the system. But it's nothing you'd try to "get" or "avoid", if that makes sense. -- Maybe you mean DE (Desktop Environment), that is the look-and-feel of the distro.

On Solus you have a few choices: the slickest and best experience is Budgie. There is also MATE and Plasma. Both are worth a look, Plasma has improved dramatically over the years in terms of performance, I've heard its pretty good today. But I'm love with Budgie, so I haven't tried it recently. :)

the Hades is drm free
@fringe sparrow i'll try to run in outside of Steam then, good point. :)

fringe sparrow
#

faint panther
#

fringe sparrow
#

thats the difference in OpenGL windows vs linux

faint panther
#

What GPU is built in your laptop?

fringe sparrow
#

vega 8

#

Huawei Matebook D14, the only issues was the freezes ( hope its Ubuntu issue on amd) and it have 4 speakers -- had to use little app to fix it.

#

Also do you know how to get an nice FPS overlay under linux and lutris?

#

I gathered FPS via the LOG, and it reported FPS every 1s

#

Quite good, but there was also so many other lines logged which did not interested me

faint panther
#

https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=ryzen3-2200g-vega8&num=1
Here is an article (2018) about vega8, drivers and performance on ryzen. Maybe you find some interesting bits there.
In general I'd say: give a rolling release distro a chance, recent kernel (atm 5.6 on Solus) and that AMD GPU should run fine out of the box, no further driver installation needed or fiddling with newer than baseline kernels on Ubuntu.
FPS Overlay: well, DXVK has a nice and simple one. If you're using dxvk for Hades (which you probably want to do) add this to Lutris in System Options - Environment Variables: DXVK_HUD with the following value: fps, gpuload

#

(mind the capitals and underscore and the comma without space between fps and gpuload)

#

this adds simple numbers to the top left corner ingame.

@wide ember , sorta. Like I was thinking if Persephone left because she didn't like how Hades was handling himself, and if Hades did love her, Hades would probably try to change himself. But we see that in this, Hades is trying to bury his past (hid Persephone's existence and doesn't talk to the rest of the fam at all). He isolated himself and keeps himself busy while also lashing out at Zagreus from time to time. So the only thing I can think of is that Hades changed but Persephone didn't return, and from personal experience, nothing hurts more than that

@carmine wharf "Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure on the median nerve. The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway surrounded by bones and ligaments on the palm side of your hand. When the median nerve is compressed, the symptoms can include numbness, tingling and weakness in the hand and arm. " from the mayo clinic :p

#

it's nerve compression/damage, while it is can be related to ligaments and stuff it's still caused by pressure(and possibly eventually permanent damage) to nerves

#

it's why posture matters, because proper wrist and elbow position can limit inflammation and mitigate pressure on the nerves

carmine wharf
#

Oh my doc said its the tendons and ligaments inflaming that makes it so bad

#

i blame bad doctors

hot goblet
#

well, yes. Technically? Those inflame, but the symptoms are caused by those pressing on your nerves like a vice.

#

like the best thing I can relate it to that most people do experience is when you hit your elbow and your hand goes numb. The elbow has a vulnerable nerve in it called the ulnar nerve, which pressure and damage to can cause symptoms similar to carpal tunnel syndrome.

#

There's alesser known related syndrome to carpal tunnel syndrome where the nerve that's vulnerable in your elbow there gets pinched, especially due to the complex joint structure there that allows for your nerve to wrap around. Tingling primarily in the pinky and ring finger of the hand, it's why you should try and keep your elbows comfortably straight as much as you can.

#

(i've had problems with that before in the past, I had to change how I sleep to keep my elbows straight and adjust keyboard posture to deal with it)

How did you do the frosting?

#

Or any recipe you recommend?

north hamlet
#

This is actually instant packet mix

#

I did add an extra yolk to the batter and a squeeze of lemon to the icing though

#

It's just butter milk lemon and sugar mix

tender cobalt

Ah, a lemon glaze. Gotcha

Figured I'll ask here, anyone encountered issues with Steam not letting you use Paypal Balance as a payment method?
i.e I have money in my Paypal balance, I wanted to buy Hades specifically, but I can't select paypal balance - only shows my credit cards...

wide ember
#

Paypal seems fine to me?

#

they added a PaySafe card option right below Paypal though

#

which is a credit card middleman type of thing, so its interface is like a credit card

desert wadi
#

found an online app that lets you stream international radio, radio.garden

#

it's kinda glitchy in win10 chrome tho

#

or at least search doesn't work for me

#

anyways, as an expat kid, i decided to see what's on moscow radio stations these days but it glitched and sent me to voronezh instead. so it's folk/old rock on blagovestie rn

desert wadi
#

wait, nvm, i just realized why we stream spotify instead of radio these days. ughhhhhh, the ads

faint panther
#

I try to not have 45 minute commutes, so radio is extra bad for me because I'll get 80 seconds of song, and then 7 minutes of ads, then another 45 seconds of another song (with the host talking over the first 15 seconds, of course), then I pull into my destination.

#

If my phone is dead so I don't have my playlist I just turn the radio off.

desert wadi
#

basically. it kinda blows bc i was poking around eastern europe bc spotify's suggestions for non-eng artists are horrible

#

or at least the algorithm literally lists piknik (old rock) as a related artist to nogu svelo (pop rock)

faint panther
#

Spotify, Pandora, and a lot of others are like that.

desert wadi
#

this is before we get into the licensing issues

faint panther
#

I made an X Japan Pandora station years ago and instead of playing their actual contemporaries like Metallica I got early Aughts J-rock like Asian Kung Fu Generation.

desert wadi
#

or the fact that it's all kpop promos in the homepage but i had to literally ask people online for korean alt

#

so far only got surl and stella jang

(side note but kpop stans scare me, as a casual bts/dreamcatcher/loona/kard fan)

wide ember
#

(oh hey, radio garden is still around)

#

(thanks, bookmarked)

desert wadi
#

wait, is it really that old?

wide ember
#

radio garden? 5 years ago, back when there were rumours that cellphones won't be able to play radio anymore

desert wadi
#

and my lg v30 has a radio listening app

#

(slow replies bc uni finals prep)

wide ember
#

I bought an old school radio last year

#

so when there's no internet or electricity locally I still have radio

desert wadi
#

i'm a spotify-listening 2000's kid

#

although i do wind up on youtube music for anything spotify doesn't have (bc seriously, their russian and ukrainian licensing blow)

#

although they do thankfully have most of my fave punk groups available

#

(a bunch of them have rather vulgar names bc punk)

wide ember
#

I feel so old, and I don't use spotify for my anime playlists

desert wadi
#

i mean, that was like the thing of choice for my middle and high school and half the uni is on there

faint panther
#

I think Spotify was starting to really hit its stride my freshman year of uni.

wide ember
#

what is even uni like those days? I remember that as I was leaving uni my city uni had this fancy new glass building with a lot of sunlight

#

didn't get to use it much myself

desert wadi
#

business school: everyone has a caffeine addiction and is in business casual half the time

faint panther
#

I feel like most American universities are largely the same as they were 10 years ago.

desert wadi
#

the liberal arts building i had to take uni requirements in: everyone has a caffeine addiction, looks like a hipster

wide ember
#

the building I had to use was very brutalist with a lot of heavy naked concrete pillars and very narrow hallways

#

I was a hipster so I didn't have a caffeine addiction, I was drinking kombucha back then

desert wadi
#

business school building was an old building that you could totally set an episode of hannibal in

#

liberal arts building was generic glass modernism. pretty but ironically less character than business school

wide ember
#

oh? the glass building was for business school in case of my uni

#

I guess it was to get people used to offices with large windows that could not be opened for air

desert wadi
#

ya, no, it was surprisingly 1800's gothic

wide ember
#

I guess until coffee gets banned or tea goes extinct the caffeine addiction will be a permanent point of all uni

desert wadi
#

the on-campus shops do carry kombucha so it's become a more basic thing lol

#

you now see most of the hipster-ing in music tastes

#

(i usually auto-win despite being an accounting major bc obscure english, russian, and ukrainian indies in my libraries and russian punk)

wide ember
#

is firewind still considered hip?

desert wadi
#

uh, who?

desert wadi
#

the only metal groups i'm familiar with louna and aria ngl

wide ember
#

haven't heard of either

desert wadi
#

aria is basically russian dad metal

#

louna is basically punk metal

wide ember
#

if you post them in the music channel I'll gladly give them a try

desert wadi
#

louna is on youtube music

haughty fog
#

to continue on what we were saying in #h1-discussion , a lot of what we know about Ancient Egypt, we know it through...the Greeks. For instance Herodotus writing about Egypt's long line of pharaohs.

#

and we call ancient Egypt cities...by the names the ancient greeks gave them

#

like, Memphis, Thebes

#

Crocodilopolis, Herakleopolis, etc

lunar badger
#

But it's not solely through the greeks themselves, yeah? They have their own texts, just like the greeks, and the greeks just made things more accesible to the archeologists that initially uncovered them

#

even in history it was very clear that plenty of things were documented in a eurocentric way and that's just mmmmm

haughty fog
#

I wish you were right, but I'm afraid the Greeks deformed many things passed on by the Egyptians, and we can't know for sure about the truth, History was not a very precise science for Herodotus back then for instance, he meddles with myths a lot of times and what he's heard

lunar badger
#

the greeks wrote down what was important to them, and the rest is either lost to time because of the non-documentation or just... not uncovered yet

#

yeah! but it doesn't mean it's not made accesible even if it's warped truth

haughty fog
#

basically, we do have a lot of information about Ancient Egypt from the ancient egyptians themselves, but a lot of it is through the buildings they left, and what's pictured or written on it. We don't have a lot of other texts though.

wide ember
#

There’s other people writing on the Egyptian

#

But it’s in Ugaritic

lunar badger
#

yeah, i feel like what i'm trying to say that trying to accredit EVERYTHING to the greeks, especially info of egyptians issssssss

#

mmm

haughty fog
#

it's not like i'm happy about it lol

wide ember
#

I feel like no one here is happy about it

haughty fog
#

not everything through the greeks, of course

wide ember
#

It’s just that Greek was and still easier understood than Egyptian or Ugaritic

lunar badger
#

Sure, greek gave their own perspectives and documentation on their interactions with egypt, but the emphasis on why the greeks were so important because of this rubs me the wrong way

#

Doubtless, they have contributed plenty to knowledge and texts but

#

y'know, they're not the be all end all

haughty fog
#

that's absolutely not what i'm saying

#

but there are some cultures and periods of time we have 100 times more information about

lunar badger
#

It just comes across that way-- it sounds very dissmisive of other cultures

haughty fog
#

idk how it can come across dismissive to just say that we have more info about some cultures

#

Ancient Egypt is, well, ancient, and we lost a lot of information on very old times, not just egyptian times ...

#

if anything i'm shocked that we use so much the Greek lens to study Ancient Egypt

lunar badger
#

I'm not really just talking about ancient egypt though

#

just cultures in general

#

I acknolwedge that ancient egypt, especially the early phases of the civ is lost to time

#

since language and writing was only beginning to form then

haughty fog
#

well, cultures in general, it's the same really, it's not fair but some cultures are pretty much unknown, and it's not fair or it does not indicate that they sucked

#

the cultures of civilizations lost - the Greeks basically survived a lot bc we kept a lot, probably bc we felt we were sort of Greeks, in the West

lunar badger
#

I'm also saying that sometimes the reason why we have more info on certain cultures is maaaybe because it's dependent on the people who have the power to put those efforts into action?

wide ember
#

The libraries

haughty fog
#

well, we can do nothing about the library of Alexandria now lol

wide ember
#

too soon!!

lunar badger
#

yknow, the library of alexandria wasn't actually burned down

#

like, there were parchements that were burned, and it was a lot of it, but the library itself was fine

wide ember
#

The parchments were the important parts!

lunar badger
#

yeah but not all of them were burned, though

#

there were also like.... lots of other libraries back then

#

the burning of the library of alexandria was greatly dramatisiczed

wide ember
#

yeah what I meant to say was thanks to that library, a lot of texts were produced and even if the library burnt, the originals (not the copies in the library) still survived

#

a lot of things would otherwise not even be written down

haughty fog
#

idk if the burning was dramatized, maybe, i feel like we don't know, but we definitely lost bazillions of books

#

like, even in Roman and Greek literature, which survived a lot

lunar badger
#

it was, there's sources

#

they were just being drama queens smh

haughty fog
#

for thousands of years people didn't care about preserving History, and even now, we don't always care or spend money on it

wide ember
#

And honestly I feel worse about the library of Nineveh

haughty fog
#

people used the ancient monuments to build their houses or burned the books

lunar badger
#

why do you feel worse about the library of nineveh tho??

#

isn't it still there

haughty fog
#

most of the time what we know, it's because there was some political intention to preserve it, or some cultural use

lunar badger
#

yeah, and js it sucks that MOST OF IT IS GREEK

#

and the emphasis put on the greeks

wide ember
#

didn’t most of non-clay records from Nineveh burn back then?

lunar badger
#

they did but most of them were clay to begin with

#

since there's a huge ammount of stone tablets found in there

haughty fog
#

well, i'm def no expert on Ancient Egypt or Ancient stuff but don't you find it somewhat shocking that soooo much of what we know is through Greek / Roman names, points of view, categories

wide ember
#

And didn’t some people take those clay blocs out of order so many texts became incomprehensible?

haughty fog
#

and i think that's still having a massive impact

lunar badger
#

ok yeah now that you mentioned it that's kind of sad-- indecriphable clay blocks that no one knows what to do with

haughty fog
#

it's the same for old "Europeans" in fact, what we know about Celts, or Italic people, it's through Romans / Greeks

lunar badger
#

there's also the fact that english has closer roots to greek than egyptian so like it makes sense

haughty fog
#

i'm not sad we know a lot about Greeks, its fascinating, but I do wish we had this proximity with other ancient cultures - I wish we kept and knew more

#

and I mean, even Rome, there's a lot that's lost

#

when you want to read Titus Livius, history of Rome, we lost most of it, and it was well-known

#

fortunately ancient Greeks had the time to develop roguelikes like Hades

lunar badger
#

I'm not sad we know a lot about greeks-- I'm sad over the fact that it has been put to priotity over other cultures :/

haughty fog
#

i don't think nowadays it's a conscious choice

lunar badger
#

w

#

what

haughty fog
#

i was joking xD but about this choice thing : there used to be conscious choices about what to destroy and what to keep

#

like, religious choices

#

nowadays i feel like choices are much lighter in impact bc the big thing is, even if we chose to prioritize this or that, we already lost so much info that it does not matter that much

lunar badger
#

yeah, there is, of course the religious aspect, but there's also the fact that people of the modern day also chose to prioritize the recovery of certain texts more than others...

#

so yeah

#

that-

haughty fog
#

sure, yea. But what's destroyed is destroyed, for instance we can't recreate burned texts of the Mayas or the Aztecs

lunar badger
#

some texts might just not be recovered because no concious effort is being built towards them, and people of their community/culture don't have the means to do so

haughty fog
#

and keeping stuff in a good condition is already costing a lot

lunar badger
#

I mean yeah, definately, those that are burned, are burned-- but even with a royal decree to burn every single book of the people, the chinese dynasties still managed to keep concise documentations for many many many years about their history

haughty fog
#

maybe...but i feel like today, many communities can organize themselves already, it's more the problem of what has been lost, but maybe i'm pessimistic.

#

maybe we will still find lots of stuff

wide ember
#

I checked enc britannica and while the fire did not destroy the library of Alexandria, some iconoclastic religious fanatics did, after it had already suffered from budget cuts

lunar badger
#

wild

haughty fog
#

yea but China was such a big, powerful civilization

lunar badger
#

books are bad- illiterate people good

haughty fog
#

no wonder they kept stuff

#

moreover, they still rule today, whereas the powers that got in place in Egypt and Mexico didn't really see themselves as Aztecs or Ancient Egyptians

lunar badger
#

It's not really a "no wonder they kept stuff" lmao-- since china was constantly fragmented and in war with each other, and with how the mandate of heaven works, it was a way to hold people accountable

haughty fog
#

we kept more about the cultures we saw as "family", or "friendly", but many times we saw these cultures as heretic, enemies, etc and then we destroyed

lunar badger
#

you know, like the american and the natives!

haughty fog
#

yea, sure, China had some very rough times, but I mean it was so rich and powerful even in those times that it's not surprising some texts survived, even when China was conquered by foreigners like Mongols they didn't destroy that much - well, they did, but a lot kept existing. But yes there were destructions, even quite recently during the Mao years, the Cultural Revolution

wide ember
#

and a lot of Arab merchants or travellers wrote on cool stuff they found in China

lunar badger
#

but yeah but i feel like you can't discount the fact that yes, maybe a lot of old civs and their texts were trampled by people who were big civs, but the reason why greeks have more info might also be attriubted to how much people valued the greeks

haughty fog
#

and that's what i say basically, there's the time factor and there's the "is this culture an enemy" factor

#

Greeks sure had such a massive impact...maybe cause of Alexander, maybe even before, because they were merchants and colonizers - but then, Phoenicians too, and we kept less

#

so maybe just chance

#

and factors idk about :p

lunar badger
#

yeah it's really hard to underpin history and where it begins and where it ends

#

I'm just very very sad that some cultures get unappreciated

wide ember
#

It’s also because our culture is descendent from them, if we are Koreans chatting in Seoul we’d be seeing this differently?

#

ā€œFinally, some exotic storiesā€ maybe

haughty fog
#

actually, i like the work done by AC Origins, for instance, but i think it's very telling they did the Greco-Roman period of Egypt

lunar badger
#

well, my culture definately did not descend from them, lmao
