it depends heavily on the bread
Some is better with toppings, some is best enjoyed on its own
sometimes i'm just not in a bread mood
now, dumplings? i could eat a good dumpling all day
Again, Im german, we are very proud of our bread, so that may have an influence
that's true
i'm american
so i've had good bread but i've also had mediocre sandwich bread
Yeah
From what I know from my mum who flies to the US for work every couple of months or so
You basically need to find a polish bakery to have decent bread in the US
yeah
some kind of specialty bakery
a good jewish deli also has good sandwich bread
roast beef on rye.......mmm
with horseraddish
Oh right, delis are also an option
But yeah, thats one part Im very happy with in germany
none in this town, sadly π
Even the chain bakeries
The ones you find a dozen times in even a small city
Usually have a dozen different types of bread at a time (or a couple dozen)
And a bunch more that rotate in and out
mmmm.........
Oh and a bunch of bread rolls ontop of that
Even stuff like Bread with Olives in it
Or walnuts
Wait, you mean like using potato flour, or actually containing potatoes?
it was good, nice textural contrast
I just had some homemade apple pie as consolation for my failed Nemesis Aspect run on Hades π π₯§
I cant stop thinking about the Smooth PB&J
@royal relic Lasagnas are like ogres...
@hasty kernel Burritos have rice. And/or beans.
Also, a big mac style sandwich is just a goddamn club sandwich.
As for whether a human is a sandwich? Humans are topographically donuts, if I remember correctly.
Depends on how many holes you include
Vsauce just did a vid on this, but if you include the two ears, the 4 tear ducts (no, I didn't know there were 4 either), and the 2 nostrils to the equation, oomies are topologicially equivalent to a 7 holed donut
Well beans do go on a sandwich, so that wouldnt change much
Rice, though...
Well, that's just about as ingredient rebellious as a mac and cheese sandwich.
Which is carbs in carbs in carbs.
That's like the turducken of sandwiches.
Hi! How are you there?
OK
I have the Ironclad the Silent and the Watcher all to ascension level 6

i am so incredibly tired

also
that one song in Dragon Age Inquisition is similar enough to the song pippin sings in return of the king that I'm now about 80% convinced they knowingly ripped it off

What is a tolerance day, anyway
It is thought by some that you can build up a tolerance to daily stimulant usage, so you take a day or two off from taking them in order to keep them from losing effectiveness.
iffy idea whereby you go off your adhd meds
i'm not 100% a fan of the idea bc like. i feel terrible when i'm off my meds
idk if the benefit is more than the hurt of going on and going off
Also it saves money
like i know when my father was a kid, kids weren't given meds on weekends or school holidays, which sounds hellish
.......that too ://
maybe i'm just really late to the party but i'm playing through radiant historia for the first time and i'm loving it
i've yet to finish radiant historia but it's near and dear to my heart π are you playing the og game or perfect chronology?
omg i got like. partway thru that...its a great game it just got too hard for me π
Which part, the combat?
yeah
Aw man, the game was originally supposed to have the protagonist be a living sword.
:0
WE WERE ROBBED
An early idea was to incorporate the theme of immortality, which resulted in the main protagonist being an ageless sword rather than a living being. Following talks with Atlus, Takayashiki was persuaded to make the protagonist a human time traveler.
F
F
I think I used a guide to get through the hard parts
or GRIND
I need to play the remake though
Also, the soundtrack is... just great
I should find wherever the hell I kept my copy
Actually!
The 3DS remake apparently has an easier mode.
It's called "Friendly Mode" and lets you use the 'surprise attack' overworld feature to instantly delete encounters you don't want to deal with, making it possible to focus on story outside of bosses.
omg.....maybe ill get that one day
see where the story heads without bashing my head against fights
Yeah, although you do still have to fight bosses
But you can actually look up guides for those.
It just cuts out as much of the "time to play this same battle AGAIN, time traveler man" as you want
@snow meadow i didnβt realize there was a 3ds remake lmao, iβm playing through the ds version
the combat is very fun to me, usually i think normal battles are a grind in other rpgs but this game keeps me hella engaged
plus the story and how the white chronicle tie together with it is all very π

THE HYPE
it's real, folks
well - i mean
it's more like "Man Literally Too Angry To Die 5" if you wanna be more precise

I seriously can't emphasize enough how much I think folks should do weightlifting
I love how strong I feel sometimes
I did stronglifts 5x5 in college

Now I pay for a coach because I don't want to injure myself
It was a bit cheaper in my day
like, almost 30k cheaper
imagine if accredited non-community colleges were still 10k
yeah, even those are expensive nowadays unfortunately
I just remember getting the first check to hand to the bursar and I was like, "this is the most money I've ever held by two orders of magnitude"
I wished I could do weightlifting π¦
I wish you could too D:

What's this you've said to me, my good friend? I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in conflict resolution, and I've been involved in numerous friendly discussions, and I have over 300 confirmed friends. I am trained in polite discussions and I'm the top mediator in the entire neighbourhood. You are worth more to me than just another target. I hope we will come to have a friendship never before seen on this Earth. Don't you think you might be hurting someone's feelings saying that over the internet? Think about it, my friend. As we speak I am contacting my good friends across the USA and your P.O. box is being traced right now so you better prepare for the greeting cards, friend. The greeting cards that help you with your hate. You should look forward to it, friend. I can be anywhere, anytime for you, and I can calm you in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my chess set. Not only am I extensively trained in conflict resolution, but I have access to the entire group of my friends and I will use them to their full extent to start our new friendship. If only you could have known what kindness and love your little comment was about to bring you, maybe you would have reached out sooner. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now we get to start a new friendship, you unique person. I will give you gifts and you might have a hard time keeping up. You're finally living, friend.

Doom is a lovely game where you beat evil demons in Hell.
Unsure if this has been the case yet, but I have noticed that in the few Discord of Developers there been freshly made bots joining that randomly pick people to advertise stuff in DMs, so to the mod team out there, I hope you see it and aware of that if this hasn't happened yet and wish luck if it does!
i'm not a bot, i swear
i did a captcha few days ago and it let me through
Its happening in other server I visit too
Prove! Prove you're not a robot!
- beep boop *
i don't have my old mettaton avatar
i have a fleshy, squishy, human gordon freeman instead
that surely has to mean i'm a human too!
now excuse me - i have to lubricate my internal organs with enslaved moisture to prevent them from overheating * beep boop *
||however - i still have my robutt emote
||
||i love that hunk of junk too much to let go of it completely|| π€
I didn't mean I tried 70 hours to beat it, I meant I had played around 70 hours on another system prior to that. haha
Probably took me around 15-20 hours before beating it first time.
Then I double-dipped on it, and then played once and beat HotK first run. haha
I'd say Dead Cells was my favorite rougelike game.
Mmmmm
But I like Hades better.
I bought it nearly two weeks ago, am close to refund deadline, unsure whether to keep it.
Because I'm pretty crap at it
Oh, I still haven't even beaten it with 1 Cell yet. lol
First run was... mmm, I died on the ramparts a bit after unlocking that custom rune, and I still get the crap kicked out of me by green zombies
Is it worthwhile for people who aren't good at the game, since unlike Hades, it's not a narrative heavy game with lots of other stuff to get invested in...
I think it's 100% worthwhile.
There's still a lot of fun to be had with it.
The only thing that bothers me.
Is there's one area that's gated to being good.
You have to beat it with 5 Cells to get to one spot.
But even not considering that, there's a ton of content.
Mmm. Guess I'll give it a shot, I hate tossing back games and like the basic feel of it
Even just with 0 Cells, some tips I have:
Learn to parry - it's amazing and can block almost everything
Basically throw all in run upgrades into one thing.
Like instead of balancing tactics, brutality, survival, throw it all into one thing, and you end up with crazy damage with that thing
And the extra skills can be used to cheese things a lot
Like bombs/grenades/slicer/etc.
Can throw them and wait for recharge
All in all, the game feels really similar to Hades in the learning curve
But it only has 6 difficulty levels, so it's kinda like if you were to add in 5 heat every time you play.
I'm just not good at consistent timing.
That's the issue.
I can time something perfectly sometimes
Another tip: Once you can reliably beat the first boss, you get the ability to make weapon drops better.
You can kick down the door at the collector instead of giving him cells.
And save up your cells for after that first boss.
Yeah, I know pretty much all the random side tips
Ah
I'm just wondering if I can actually play past 0 cells, because the game seems to really really emphasize playing as consistently as possible.
It didn't take me too much longer to be able to reliably get to the end of 1 Cell
Here you have options to screw up
But I just die on the boss.
I suppose worst case, there's custom mode and/or outright modding, not like it's a competition for me
Yeah, I haven't played with mods because I was on Switch at first.
More thinking - is the variety of gear and things worth just playing around for the sake of it?
For sure
I modded Hollow Knight to be a little bit easier and had a great time.
It feels similar to this with things like swords, shields, bows, etc.
Or at least, differently difficult
But they have a lot of different effects
And there's other weapons like sandals, whips, etc. too
oh yes, the infamous boot
the bad meme weapon
well, if it's a game that doesn't have the stick up its ass too far to NOT have joke weapons, I guess it's worth it
:^)
I had an interesting run with it before
Where I had a whip I think that brought enemies closer
then kick them away
that and I do enjoy just having Bread as an option
God
baguette/10
Got a ginrmous list of games to play
I do like how fluid the movement feels, even when you're not exactly doing it well
After buying a Switch I got really into Roguelikes
Weighty, but not... clunky and full of stops and starts
Dead Cells feels amazing. haha
That kind of slow, I hate
And sometimes you get a random collar that gives you quadjumping
By comparison, Zagreus feels like he's made of air half the time
our boy Zag is F A S T
Man my last run
40% movement speed, +3 dashes, +100% movement speed for ? seconds after dashing
I wish I took a video of that lol
And had Athena dash
even without crazy damage that run, I got 1/2 of Hades lifebar without getting hit
Technically, when you think about it

Asking here bc I feel it's the most appropiate place, but I've seen in the PAX site (I'm not at all familiar with it) that tomorrow's Orchestra will overlap with a bunch of other events, does anyone know to wether the PAX Twitch site will stream the Orchestra in particular? Or if Supergiant will stream it themselves?
I believe, I think, pax has multiple streams
I come to this conclusion because last time I accidentally watched jackbox gameplay footage before realizing the concert had begun
PAX did mention Supergiant in Concert in the stream schedule here: https://www.twitch.tv/team/pax
in the main one (pax) while the side ones (pax2, pax3, etc.) cover other stuff
Yes the concert is getting streamed
Yo whoβs going to the concert tomorrow ?

Hell hyped! Gonna head over to line at 7:15
I am! π
me!!
Some pretty nice gems here to be released
My personal list:
Othercide
The Falconeer
Shadow of the Road
Spirit of The North
Haven (<3)
Hellpoint
Cloudpunk
GameDec
Hazel
Oh haven was that adorable RPG about a couple stranded on a planet, wasnt it?
ye
Not my thing, but it looked charming as all hell
Also I feel for the guys making GameDec
Making a pure RPG this shortly after the masterpiece that was Disco Elysium
Those are some tough expectations
I love the premise
A detective that enters into MMORPGs to solve crimes
(Also not stranded, they eloped)
Oh, I thought they were stranded on that planet
hot damn I wanna play that now
And yeah, the premise is interesting
But still, tough sell in a post-Disco Elysium world
Ill probably check it out
Either way
Yeah I have 100% confidence gamedec will have brilliant writing
I sure hope youre right
I mean DE was my fav game of 2019 so I'm biased lol
Oh no Disco Elysium was absolutely stellar
Im just not sure this game will be
The studio has only done a VR game before it
I mean DEs UI was kinda clunky
Yeah lol
Surprisingly almost none of the games interest me
GameDec might be the only one
Undungeon sounded interesting but the gameplay didnt look great
Oh, Ghostrunner maybe
I also Got interested in the Xcom meets feudal Japan
That one is only 2022 so I didnt think about it much
Yeah Lol
The other interesting feudal Japan game comes sooner
Ghosts of something cant remember
Tsukuhima
I think its Ghost of Tsushima
Black Skylands would be interesting, but I dont like the Birds eye view perspective
Also Othercide just called me for the visual aspect
Only for that I'll keep watch
Yo concert at PAX East was dope last night! Hope you all had an awesome time as well!

It was actually this documentary series that convinced me to join this Discord, I was always of the opinion developer-run discords were a-bad-thing, but I've proven wrong

The cat's tired of the crow's shenanigans and the latter doesn't care in the slightest
What game is that from? :v
I haven't played this rougelike called monolith in a long while and i realized it's still getting updates
"It's hard to believe, but the modern urinal was originally invented by Marcel Duchamp as an art piece in 1917. Decades later, engineers discovered that Duchamp's beautiful design was also useful as a specialized toilet."
Wolcen
Its not a great game
but I get to be purple
for example
also my character has been called he a number of times
which seems..... telling
There's a stunning lack of variety of skills
there's a whole bunch of variation of passive abilities
traits
whatever
but like, for activatable abilities there's essentially 3.5 classes
magic, melee weapons, ranged weapons, and the half class that's ranged weapons and/or daggers
then you can subspecialize with the trait tree thing that's pretty customizable
you can split these classes by like, having different one handed weapons
and so far there's been no gamebreaking bugs but its very obviously buggy
Its no Fallout New Vegas
Hmm
Sad
I guess that's a thing PoE does better
Weapons just dictates your active gem pool
Then you can pick stuff based on damage, strats and such
And now they are adding MORE passives
Like, build-a-tree
@serene tulip If Wolcen ain't that good i strongly suggest you try PoE
There's a big league coming too
Eh, fair
I'm not good at optimizing these characters
It feels like each time I reroll my traits/stats I just get worse.
That's the matter with flexible "classes"
In something like BL2 skill trees are more straight forward
but in PoE, wolcen, etc
You are given choices in such broad ways
It's easy to lose yourself
It's the reason you can't see the full menu on display at McDonalds
Right now my algorithm is, "if it increases crit chance, crit damage, attack speed, or damage, get it"
And then you die lol
I only die to bosses
A good build needs some degree of survivability
Everything else, pretty much, I kill in one hit.
But make number get big!
I have points in life steal
That counts, right?
Yeah
If you are a dodge character you can afford low hp
So long you don't get oneshot, healing back up is a reliable strategy
Hell i theory crafted a Sans build for PoE
I started out just wanting to swing big swords
They aren't great in wolcen either imo
I will decide?
we will decide
Atelier Ryza
I know none of these so uuuh
Lel
Atelier Ryza yes,
I admit I know little of them
I just got interested in God eater after discovering Code Vein is it's secret Spinoff
God Eater 3 Id say
In terms of gameplay its the most fun one
But its also the only one that isnt really a JRPG, its in the Monster Hunter genre
I dunno about y'all
but I like talking to my close friends every day
but I'm not convinced they like me doing that
so some days I just don't talk to anyone
just to give them a day off
but I'm like just, opening instant messengers being like, "oh man, I wanna tell them that"
and then like, "no, you talked to them all week"
Its in the genre, but pretty different
Mainly its way more fast-paced and action-y
With less of the downtime that Monster Hunter has like fishing, mining stuff, or trying to trek down the monster
oh my good god
This book I'm listening to
it seems like the author realized he'd forgotten to put the male gaze
and then decided to pack the last three chapters with an entire book's worth
Cast Under an Alien Sun is a solid 3/10 for me
by Olan Thorensen
Why the Scandinavians got all the cool names?
I bought in a con a book some guys were selling, they seemed so excited to have their first book published
They even had a special edition with the cover carved out of wood
sorry proxy
I'm just so mad. He's commented on this women's breasts 3 times now and its DURING A ||[redacted]|| PIRATE RAID
@serene tulip sounds like Chinese webnovels
no joke, I've had the misfortune of reading a novel where the author kept talking about a woman's "mature allure" and "twin peaks" every three paragraphs
That reminds me to a hilarious drama a year ago
Have you ever heard of the 'cleaning gal fiasco'?
no
@serene tulip Actually. Having read the reviews...
LMAO
I can't believe you got to the last three chapters
Its been mediocre since the start
I would have dropped it by the time I discovered the secondary world was just another lazy carbon copy of generic 18th century Europe.
but not bad enough to stop reading
I just thought that there was something interesting he could have done there
like, bring up the aliens
Ok Im not sure if Im going insane, or if Firealpaca always had slightly blurry images
Not images
Uh
Bars?
The text stuff around the image
Cleaning gal was a wholesome slice of life webmanga where a guy lived and cleaned his crush flat (a gal) then chapter 8 happened
In chapter 8 they ended trapped in a locker
Then came chapter 8.5,
Then chapter 8.6
8.7
8.8
8.9
8.91
All while trapped in the locker
Then 8.93 the School council president caught her
Then the manga ended
People were confused
The author deleted his Twitter and everybody thought he went insane
The pay off of doing that though! Your future you will be thankful to you.
future me is a chump
Don't say that! What if future you hear about that?
what the heck, lmao
You have to be respectful towards elders. π
future me can come fight me
what's he gonna do
no, that manga
ROFL

any more details and the entire convo will probably get yeeten out of this server
Anyways know I'm reading a VERY wholesome mangs
Actually, at that point, might want to start removing some of this info, you might get modded
And I hope this one doesn't disappoint
Done
Has anyone hear read the new mtg licensed Manga
More or less licensed
Dunno the details
It's about two mtg players that fall in love after being mtg buddies
I dont think its licensed
But yeah Ive read it
Its called "Destroy all Humankind, they can't be regenerated"
Destroy all humankind. It can't be regenerated. @serene tulip
Damn you beat me to it
Hehe
Yeah it was originally a one shot that became popular so they made it a full Manga
Talking about mangai began rereading snk as the finale is approaching
It's incredible how his art improved all these years
You can see how good he became at drawing
Wholesome at his own way
Even if snk is all but wholesome π
But yeah Destroy all Humankind is pretty wholesome
That reminds me I'm hyped for Destroy All Humans reboot
I hope it's a good remake.
Not a lazy, halfassed one.
It's looking... Spyro Reignited-level good in the demo, better not be hiding 3000 bugs
yeet
it's a far better one than the Crash remaster imo
Crash one... the physics feels slightly off
Apparently something to do with Crash's physics model being pill shaped, so you can't really stand on edges super precisely like before, you slide off
And older games with new physics = not nice, since they weren't adjusted for the jump spacing or anything.
Spyro one is just beautiful, though
I am reading the one I said earller
Only available in Spanish, tho
Welp, the RPGs dont download in Steam
Time to get the other games in the Backburner
Have you played Bladed Fury or The Turing Test?
Snow Crash maybe?
I also remember His Dark Material sΓ©ries being very good, though the ending was not satisfying
I heard his new books are significantly worse
I need to remember this trilogy I read last year
Pretty grim overall but VERY good
the Broken Earth series
Three times Hugo award winners
I can't understate how good I thought they were
I think thatβs the second time I see Broken Earth being suggested in this channel
I meant this as a good thing, more recommendation usually means better quality
Also this ain't a small server
What was the series that stemmed from a Harry Potter fanfic again?
The one with a sidequel on livejournal
The one with the gays
NK Jemesin is pgreat
@wide ember I think you're talking about The Mortal Instruments
Itβs not The Mortal Instruments tho this looks interesting
I just got home, I probably bookmarked it
it was Carry On (Simon Snow series)
...I think I somehow misplaced my hell.com again
awesome -> broken earth, snow crash, neuromancer
gay -> carry on, crush, vellum
high definition -> discworld, his dark material
something like that?
Im not sure what you mean
Also His Mortal Instruments was good though the third book was
Confusing
Wait no
Thats the wrong series Im thinking of
His dark materials was the one I was thinking of
Also I still gotta read the third Neuromancer book
Ive not been able to find it
Yknow what, Ill just buy it on Amazon
Anyone read Mistborn here?
Ancilliary Justice and Memories of Empire are cool
awesome list = plot escalates in a good way, gay list = relatable gay moods, high definition list = high complexity world and story building that spans over multiple books
vellum was defined by the author as a βCubist epic fantasyβ and I have to agree, the story had a really good structure that wasnβt very common
Ancillary Justice looks interesting (and I wish I had tried mistborn if only to know)
Every character is she/her because the MC explains that her language doesn't have a gendered pronoun so she just arbitrarily chose she/her.
I wonder if the books been translated into other languages....

Chopik and Snowball.
@fervent zenith Hot damn yes. Brandon Sanderson is a wizard.
Cats!
@sudden torrent Good thing the first one isn't named Napoleon.
:p
Anyway, I recommend Hitchhiker's Guide... Jim Butcher's anything, really...
Snowball really be keeping him down for a hug.
Ah yes. A ferocious predator
Awwh
re: books, i've been REALLY enjoying Three Parts Dead and the rest of the Craft Series by Max Gladstone, and also This is how you lose the time war
Oh hey that one is neat
Max Gladstone is good
I don't know the latter though.
Jasper Fforde I recall being good.
18 days left
For?
@royal relic AC?
Or Doom
@serene tulip heh, that's pretty interesting, because the local supermarket calendars I get default to she/her for their english translations too, though no reason is given
Max Gladstone is pretty good, though the series gets more and more animesque with time
the first Red King scene was rather Kill la Kill, hilariously
The first chronological book of Craft Series is Last First Snow, and the first published was Three Parts Dead, and there are two sidequel/spinoff Choice Of games
(I said sidequel but it's best to play the games after you learn about the Red King)
I like how the AC & Doom community are being wholesome on having the same release date π
rip and tear, until your loans are paid off
blargh I'm conflicted
I want to buy the fe3h expansion pass, but also doom eternal is coming out
and also I just bought red dead redemption 2 so maybe I should just finish that
nah save for doom
as someone who loves the FE series, I'm suggesting buying doom eternal first
because fe3h's main game is good enough without the expansions
doom, of course
eternal?
according to my man hugo it's going to be about 20 hours long
give or take
even this chat is conflicted
I'll wait and see how eternal shapes up, I liked doom2016 enough to beat ultra nightmare so we'll see
if nothing else I'll just save and get both lol
unrelated: oh god what is the artemis fowl movie I hate it
Oh yea there is a movie now... I remember reading the books ages ago.
I read it years and years ago
the trailer looks awful
...did I hallucinate that the artemis fowl book was about this boy genius stealing fairy gold to keep his family bank account alive after his dad gone missing and mom gone insane?
because the movie is nothing that I remember, is it some alternate continuity?
Nah, that's basically the book
I've always had very low hopes for the Artemis Fowl movie
Despite absolutely loving the book series, I always firmly believed it would be Eragonified if it were made a movie
Nope. That was exactly what the first Artemis Fowl book was about.
He technically kidnapped a fairy to get a RANSOM of fairy gold to fund the search for said missing dad.
oh boy i just watched the trailer
the movie even did away with that first bit
errgh............
Later books got a bit muddied.....
Honestly I didn't really like how the series ended.
The first books were the strongest.
I stopped being able to track it after the fourth book? Which sounds like it was for the best.
I've read all of the main series books
Haven't read the Fowl Files or the graphic novels (which were apparently a thing?)
And it did get kinda weird
But book 5 was quite good
I know I read the one that had like, time travel involved? Had a red cover? And I remember Opal's whole deal.
But beyond that it's a blank.
Book covers tend to change or get revamped at times so... idk..
The Eternity Code got me back when I first read it though, it was really good.
But yea time travel was eventually a thing.
π That was the 5th one
And I thought it was pretty good
Opal Deception was the 4th
Lost Colony! Yeah, that one!
The cover was consistently red in all versions I looked at so it stuck, especially in the bookset it came with that had them all matching.
Gold>Silver>Blue>Black with opalish stuff> Red
I mean it was pretty good but it felt like it started to head to a completely different genre than the beginning books.
It felt less focused on things being solved through clever reasoning and more....
just everything is solved through magic means.
Less morally dubious criminal activity, more sci fi fantasy?
For sure, yeah
I remember I read the 7th book in a single night, but I have no recollection of anything that happens in it
Except that there's a submarine
I do remember cracking the code that got put at the bottom and tops of the pages for fun.
I think I still have the replacement code cheat sheet around here somewhere.
Yeah the fairy alphabet!
I remember a friend showed me how they did it
Recognizing the word "the" in fairy script was something he figured out
Also, from wiki:
In 2001 plans were announced for a film adaptation of the series.
And they're just getting it done now......
Makes me even less sure that this is gonna be a good movie nwo
I don't remember there being any code on the top or the bottom of the pages.
I think I started reading them in Dutch, maybe that got left out... :/
it was a replacement cipher for English letters, so trying to translate it might've been too much effort for the publishers.
Yeah, that kinda sucks
oh my god???? wow that was uh
that sure was something
they just uhhh pasted character names onto an entirely original story, huh
I guess so.......
I guess artemis is like. a hero now who doesn't know his dad does sketchy stuff and holly is his??? friend??? from the start?
his dad is in like??? magic protection force and works with them???
this is so weird
oh god why
it's unrecognizable from a plot summary standpoint, they like copy and pasted the hunt for artemis sr. from arctic incident but then skipped over all the development between artemis and the fairies from the first book by making mulch and holly allies/employees of artemis sr. and making him some kind of magical...border....guardian
is what i'm getting from the trailer anyways
and artemis seems unaware that his dad had a criminal empire
and it seems kind of unlikely that his dad is actually a criminal in this but is actually a magic spy who's just misunderstood
That's... SO contrary to the cool parts of what made the books interesting, too, so darn shame.
Where's the character development going to even come from if we can't watch this south-of-good 12 year old slowly grow into being a more relatively decent person
Not to mention one of the most amazing climaxes of any story I've read is the Siege of Fowl Manor
Like, releasing the minotaur into the house was insane
Time-stopping the whole area was awesome
It makes me worried that they're not going to even touch the biobomb and the absolute horror that concept introduced and examined.
Holly finally getting to punch Artemis in the face
I'm not sure if I remember this one well, but Artemis saving Holly ||using the acorn to basically reboot her||
It seems like they aren't even going to cover the fowl manor plotline
like, at all
artemis is an intelligent but otherwise naΓ―ve-seeming standard boy wonder protag
So the persona he'd use when talking to his therapist instead of actually opening up.
Holly takes a very critical wound from the minotaur, and Artemis takes her acorn from her and plants it in the soil below the floor beneath them which was cracked from the battle
Which recharges her magic and heals her
Wow, even the Eragon movie at least had the decency to keep the basic plotline intact
right, and Holly was thinking about how she had gone too long without recharging in the beginning of the book
Eragon was... I mean, you are not wrong
Look Im not saying the movie was good
Im just saying young me who had read the books wasnt too bothered by the movie
that's why I had to say you are not wrong
Eragon movie was still "this will still be enjoyed by majority of the readers of the books"
meanwhile, Artemis Fowl's target audience... the modus operandi (sp?) seems to be "people who've never read the book can enjoy this and the readers of the books' outrage will generate free publicity for us"
[...] and the readers of the books' outrage will generate free publicity for us
I already knew big corporations had gotten social media manipulation down to a science... I just hate it
On the other hand... did Cats make a profit?
Wait a goddamn second
Why in hell's name has Commander Root been gender-swapped??????
Holly Short being the first female LepRECON officer was, like, a Big Deal
they did WHAT?
Commander Root is Judy goddamn Dench
I didn't recognize commander root from the trailers at all
Never a good sign
Can't believe Eoin Colfer allowed this
and there's an interview article saying that Eoin Colfer agreed with the changes in the movie, though I'm pretty sure the words had been placed outside its original context
Butler being race-swapped was, like, acceptableish, if you're OK with some erasure of Eastern influence
But, like, this is next level bad
Gotta see that interview at some point
and Cats didn't make a profit, it was a flop
the movie with uncanny valley make up I mean
Maybe fan rage can make this one flop too, but probably not
It's not gonna be on Cats' level
And now I hate that I'm rooting for an Artemis Fowl movie to flop
But, like, it appears to be barely Artemis Fowl
No I couldn't
it's corporate social manipulation wearing the sleeve of your beloved childhood
the only thing let to do is to shot it down, unless they manipulated you into shooting it
if there is a silver lining to it, it would be that the outcry lead to more people reading the books so they know what the outrage was about, and that the majority end up liking the books enough to boycott the movie
then again, disney owns the books' publishing rights, so they make money either way
(no really, Hyperion publishing was bought by Disney at some point, so it's now Hachette under Disney Books)
Thanks disney for ruining everything
God damn why must they be so rich
because we all loved Little Mermaid, Lion King, Mulan, Wall-E and etc.
they do make genuinely good movies now and then
Which Lion King? Which Mulan? Little Mermaid was decades ago and WALL-E was Pixar's doing
Disney bought Pixar
Yeah
so legally speaking, Disney made it, even when it was Pixar
it's like, if you are a intern and you make a discovery, they would say the team lead made the discovery and you remain nameless and penniless
Disney went from evil (forcing lemmings to their death to make "documentary" of lemming suicide), to good-ish (helped Chinese American into making Bambi's art designs, made several genuinely good movies), to evil again ("I can just use money and manipulation to make more money")
I wouldnt say evil, as much as theyre just amoral
Which is arguably the default for companies in capitalism because morality is expensive
Probs true but in practice the majority of humans would call them the same thing
Maybe, but I think there is an important distinction between the two
(I must say in earnest that I enjoy it when you play the contrarian, UNOvven)
Im not being contrarian
... I just realised the irony of that statement
Gosh Darn it
well, you know what I mean even when I'm not using the exact word
Yeah
(and technically, I'm the contrarian here)
But yeah, I do think its important to distinguish between amorality and evil
immoral is the closer word to evil, amoral is what ever they desire regardless of morality
Yeah, immoral is doing the wrong thing
Amoral is acting without caring if its right or wrong
so if it's profitable to be good and that's what a corporation under capitalism wants, they would want to have good behaviours if they are amoral
Yup
this would imply that the consumers have the powers to manipulate them into acting good
Which in most systems they do not
because the market was set by the corporations, not by consumers
and if a market competitor was doing good, both as in doing ecological/ethical/altruistic things as in making profits, they are soon bought or pushed out to weed out competitions?
Partially, partially just because consumers are not a monolithic entity and lack the organisation to push for good changes
And its often more profitable to divide and conquer while doing bad things, than just doing good things
But yes, thats why capitalism sucks and in particular hurts the arts
consumers sure are diverse, though common interests should still exist in a group
or even without the group
thatβs when strategic cooperation should emerge, no?
In theory, but if the entire population is the target demographic, as they are for Disney or equivalent MegaCorps
There is a good chance the split is pretty close to 50/50
thanks for that info Cale, I'll start the download
I'm reading the backlog and it feels like I've accidentally slipped into that weird fairy demon hell from the later Artemis books.
@wide ember On that note, my favorite Disney movie of all time was the one they strategically and quietly murdered: Treasure Planet.
https://youtu.be/b9sycdSkngA TL;DW: We were robbed, Disney maybe probably killed one of its finest movies just to shoo 2D animation out the door.
In this video I'm talkin cool about Musker and Clements' way-back sleeper hit from the early 2000's, Treasure Planet, and why it became Disney's biggest mistake. If there's anything I love more than Disney films it's Disney films most of my friends haven't heard of. Love you R...
treasure planet and atlantis the lost empire are probably my fave disney movies and they're just .. forgotten
so sad ;A;
Yes
And the video makes a fairly compelling argument that it was deliberate.
Lmao, what the hell is this trailer?
I'm so confused. They didn't even get the size of the fairy city right.
There was so much comedy in the fact that absolutely nothing was Butler sized.
I'm okay with a chunk of it in theory but like, wow this is Not Great
About the only thing that seems decent is the casting for Artemis's father
I do have to say, I do miss 2d Animation
Dont get me wrong, a lot of the 3d Animated Movies are very good
But there is just a certain charm to the old stuff
Yeah I wish they didn't decide to do any AF movies
(As an aside, I'm okay with the general concept of Dench playing Root and doing the whole gender swap thing, but only if there were doing something with it to justify taking that aspect away from Holly's story, which clearly they aren't)
Then again I also miss Soviet-era Russian animation
Or hell, Soviet-era Russian media in general
There was a lot of surprisingly good stuff amongst it
Hell, Id argue russian Sherlock Holmes is the best Live Action adaptation of Sherlock Holmes
Man the puppet, claymation and psychedelic stuff from soviet era animation was my childhood
Do you know the russian Treasure Island, or Adventures of Captain Vrungel?
awww Klaus was wonderful. I loved it so much
Of course! I watched it serveral times actually.
I love them both
My favorite animated film will always be The Iron Giant
I wish we got more stuff like it nowadays
Including the inconsistent animation full of errors
@toxic steppe An Artemis Fowl movie that didn't change him into a typical hero character would have been fine.
It would have but that's not the case.
My favourite would probably be the first 5-10 minutes of Up
The first book is so strong too
Most of the other changes are forgivable. It's the "he isn't REALLY a bad kid" part that's kind of not.
Man the inconsistent animation full of errors was part that made it magical and actually take in every detail while I could.
old animations... the Halved World in that tv show for kids still haunts me
They did have the time stop, I wonder if they really did cut out the blue rinse.
Yeah
I legit have to wonder
Like that one scene early on in Treasure Island
Where the table changes on every shot
Is Colfer's statement about approving of the changes sincere, or is he trying to play nice with Disney?
The magical tableβ’οΈ
Or the surreal humour of it
it was intentional or not? because there was this french movie where things were intentionally inconsistent
On the other subject - Iron Giant was certainly deserving of its reputation.
I mean given how much it changes and how carefully its drawn
Its probably deliberate
But its still funny
"let's make artemis fowl and remove every character trait that made him interesting"
and apparently a whole era learned to use the inconsistencies to create that feel
I've never watched Treasure Planet, though I miss Atlantis (typo'd Planet as Island, that was a different cult classic)
But yeah soviet animation was very funny, and had pretty good music too
Eoin Colfer claims to support the backstory alterations. But I'm not sure how far to trust that, because he probably got a boatload of money.
And it was extremely unique in how it looked
I never got to watch Treasure Island either
Treasure Planet is the one I did grow up with
That movie was a masterpiece.
Though man I am unsure what I would consider my all time favourite.
I could say though since I am still sucker for old animations I would say something like "Kitten named Bark" or "Crocodile Gena & Cheburuska", considering probably I kind of remember them the most and proper.
Honestly, instead of all this live action nonsense
Disney should have brought Treasure Planet 2 back
Probably Kapitan Vrungel for me
Exactly how it was supposed to be before it was canned.
Or Soviet Treasure Island
Theyre the main ones I watched and I watched them a lot of times
@wide ember Do you remember the Atlantis "sequel"?
The one that was just recycled from the cancelled show?
Yup!
They keep on reairing on this one channel here so kind of same lol. Same goes for animated Doctor Aybolit. Or Doctor Ouchhurts, if we to say in literal translated version.
have anyone here watched the Haier anime?
Haier was this home appliances company that decided to invest in anime at one point
Haier?
they usually make fridges, washing machines and the like
Oh, weird Chinese thing here
Every time I rewatch the more I remembered how much I would hate to be poisoned by a drink in my childhood.
Doctor Aybolit? this looks like nightmares well executed
Can't say I've ever heard of any of these old Russian titles
Not surprising
They never really got outside of russia
The Sherlock Holmes live action series is the only one you might have heard
link us the subs
Because the actor became an honorary MBE for his portrayal of Sherlock Homes
wait, but wasn't PMMM's witch scenes inspired by russian animation or something?
Tbh not surprised, the Soviet era animation never really gotten outside of slavic countries much. Though thankfully I know one channel that has some cartoons stored with the subtitles on.
I mean Im sure individual people know of it
But I mean it never got into the public conscious
because they might got translated to japanese or chinese or something
(also is it okay if I mention la Planète sauvage here?)
Yeah , like only select group of people know it by conversations or having knowledge of Russian since these kind of never were released in different language. Same honestly can be said about the same era movies, they were great but only handful of people heard of them.
@hasty kernel I have like... next to no awareness of that kinda stuff either
I live under a rock
Tbh its still not that known
@wide ember Why would it not be okay?
But Sherloc Holmes Enthusiasts might be aware
...guys? there's a dedicated russian animation translation project on bilibili, though into chinese
Really? Never have heard of it before.
Me neither
there is a american disk of russian animation anthology called Masters of Russian Animation
But then again lately I kind of zoned out from news noawadays so no wonder it's my first time hearing.
purchasable on amazon
can be watched here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLn5Aci4kkiv5XMc6I4iNQ5kWfA-JcVE1A
Hm
Looking over the list I recognise some, but dont recognise others
Yezhik v Tumane is one I do know
Hello? I was asking something...
I looked up that movie, doesn't seem like there's anything objectionable in it
you clearly did not get the joke, according to the hitchhiker's galaxy, the rudest word in the universe is ______
planete sauvage is made in that country
Oh
belgium
Interesting
That is one oblique way to get to a Hitchhiker's Guide joke
See, I didn't know it was made there.
Damn.
Turns out there were soviet-japanese collaborations in animation
So that might be how the influence spread
Then again I was also shocked to find out that several famous german cartoons were actually anime commissioned by germany but produced in japan
belgium animations are weird, though not enough were made
