With 10 they started splitting the games into multiple parts though, right? FFX-1, FFX-2, etc.? That's another thing that would have put me off from giving them a go.
I enjoyed the "classic" FF games (with FF6 sharing the #1 spot on my all-time favourite games list with Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana) because they told epic and engaging stories with likeable characters, etc. Not a big fan of story-driven game experiences that are cut into multiple pieces (YMMV of course).

6 tackled some quite mature topics (like dealing with the death of loved ones, and suicide), but also found some nice comedy as balance (seriously, what other game lets you suplex a effing train?). 7 was ok, though I never really bought into the hype (and to be perfectly honest I got quite annoyed with all the FF7 hype). 8 was very cliché but it resonated with me because I played it right in my slightly-angsty phase.
