Well, that's where you heard wrong. No therapy is "as effective" as medication. It's like saying "Apple juice is as effective as lemon juice" They're two entirely different things, and one should never be used to replace the other, but they can at times be used in tandem.
As far as "Should", it has a certain implication. You "should do better" You "should try harder" you "should make the effort". All of them create a sense of obligation that can result in guilt if you don't do it.

then again, many types of depression are temporary and heal all by itself, and it's estimated that 48%-75% of depression are temporary (stress, trauma, not enough sunlight, etc.) and require no medication or therapy, and usually if life situation is improved it will heal within a few months
CBT is best when the issue is psychological, med is required when the issue is neurological, it's very different

late to the jumping conversation but I have a fun story about jumping in mmos
in LoTRO, there's an annual Month of the Chicken where players can turn into a chicken to complete certain quests, which involve travelling around to talk to animals
at the very end of the questline, you are given an 8 hour long quest that requires you to travel across all of Middle-Earth
chickens can't communicate with regular players, so jumping is necessary in order to convey danger
last year, the chickens decided to make the voyage to Mordor, which is normally incredibly dangerous because players take massive amounts of damage every second unless they have destroyed the Black Gate
turns out, chickens are immune to this damage
so the chickens were just jumping around, trying to get the regular player escorts to come help them. they had forgotten about the damage, and the humans died
