whoop there goes another flash
it’s a Long way away, wherever the storm is. it’s a good twenty seconds between flash and rumble
About 6 kilometers then
rain on asphalt and the drippy sound when it’s running off the gutters and the occasional far-away rumble..... love weather like this
after the week we’ve had I Need This
I envy you
I have had. A very bad two days
It's hard saying goodbye to friends you may never see again, but I think it's harder to reconcile with the fact that (some of) the friends you have are drifting farther away from the people you befriended.
Thank you (and what a beautiful emoticon art)
Sometimes people change, and all you can do is let go and find new people
I have a kaomoji keyboard
Super useful
Yeah, sometimes stuff just happens and you gotta deal with it
I wish things wouldn't change at all for me but it's not physically possible
change is always inevitable, as much as we might not want it to :/
try to focus on the good times you had, rather than the ones you might have had. you'll make it through this
How can you tell she's fanservice
Define better
Unfortunately, no
damn :/
It does become less common
And she gets some really good scenes
But yeah, its unfortunately there
In fact, there was one manga chapter that was particularly bad about it
You probably wont see it for a while
For those interested, by and by, This War of Mine is 1.99 (Regular 12.99 or 13.99, I forget) on Android AND iOS right now. This is a top tier indie title, and even though it's free on EGS this week, it's still a steal at 2 dollars for a fully fledged mobile game with no microtransactions (aside from 2 optional DLCs for more content).
Cannot recommend this enough. My wife and I love the game so much we even bought the tabletop board game xD
ahh edgey edge boi :3
best gifts; Frozen tear, Obsidian, Pumpkin Soup, Sashimi or a Void Egg
i just stared my game that all takes a while to get
started*
blease chucklefish i just want my husband
and all the universal loves which are; Pearl, Prismatic shard, Rabbit's foot
yeah, Sebastian is the edgy boi
i cant even grow him gifts
today's best discovery - youtube's window-in-window shows up over the top of anything else you have open
oooh awesome
Just check out the SDV wiki.
it’s not useful when it says
“all universal likes except [lists basically everything]”
the SW valley wiki is really useful
First couple weeks just give him fruit. If you get extra quartz, use that. After you get sashimi recipe, start fishing and you're in like Flynn
Sashimi is a pretty early recipe and he loves it.
he likes cauliflower
tbf my fiancee plays a lot more than me, and she always romances Shane
(That was already suggested)
i am using the wiki dang i just wanted to start a conversation
chat was empty and i like talking to yall
Haha it's chill. Nothing wrong with asking. I think most people's reflex is to point to useful tools, though.
I've never personally romanced Sebastian. Like you, I usually lean towards Penny.
Yeah for sure.
it may take me years (in game) but i will win his heart
Like I said, if you work towards Sashimi, you'll have it in no time.
(Hope you like fishing!)
He dislikes all flowers except poppy
And those he hates. <.<
So, I wouldn't give him flowers. 😛
You can give him fish except carp & snail until you get sashimi, too.
Aww I love Elliott he’s great but honestly Shane & Harvey are close seconds
Sebastian seems cool but I couldn’t remember his schedule so I’m pretty sure I’m only at 3 hearts w him
Yeah his schedule is a pain
He's a total shut in and you can't enter someone's room until 2 hearts
Making friends with linus for sashimi and being around the mines a lot is the best way to raise friendship with him, especially since he comes out at night
Whenever i play stardew i always want to get the fancy chickens from shane
They're too fancy
Validd
Also the spicy eel from george
I love the void chickens
Dinosaur is where it's really at
Yeah, really, getting 2 quartz/wk from the mine shouldn't be all that hard.
I 👏 love 👏 Sebastian
i’m trying my best for him
Early game, Friday nights are definitely the easiest consistent time to catch him.
Stardew valley is that harvest moon-like game, right?
But he also usually comes out of his room between like 3 & 5. I totally don't just have that memorized or anything.
Yep
Yes.
thank u ... i owe u my life caitlin
I see
Can't forget saloon day
I think that's one thing that's great about SV though is the diversity of the characters. Like, there's bound to be someone who you like romancing best, and they're all very different.
im gonna use my crazy smart skillz and hack the game so my awful attention span can do this
Also, Sebastian is basically the basement dweller stereotype, but pretty, am I reading this right?
Tuesday is also great for getting housewives, since it's exercise day
@opaque quail Have you romanced Shane? He's got a really heart breaking storyline too.
Sebastian is kind of an Emo gamer.
Sebastian is an especially edgy nerd
I started Stardew before Shane was a romance option but I am familiar with it!
Edgy nerd works too
i’m also an emo gamer
Edgy nerd who feels out of place specifically in his own family, which is a bummer.
Mmh
He's just a bit spiny.
What does emo even mean, I thought it was like goths but apparently thats incorrect
Yeah, no.
Similarly dark, but with a much milder aesthetic
I mean it's a shortening of the word emotional, it's someone who feels, but darkly.
Huh
I mean I figured as much once I learned about cybergoths
Man subcultures are weird
Though when I was younger it was also associated with self harm so I've always shied away from it as a descriptor.
Only people who care about goth emo distinction are goths and emos
goth is like death metal, emo is like thinking that my chemical romance is a good band
Not all goth is death metal, either. In fact, Goth is closer to Punk than it is to Emo.
Yeah I was gonna say
There are a lot of ideological differences.
And Cybergoth seems to be a substantial subculture of the goth subculture
And Cake, I'm neither, so your argument is invalid. 😛
And they are more dark electro, hellektro or Aggrotech
Which to be fair are some of my favourite genres
Frankly Seb doesn't even really dress that emo either he just.... wears black.
i just wanna marry him so he isn’t so lonely
Oh mood.
please sir; i relate to you far too much, marry me
He just wears a hoodie
The nerd uniform
Nah, nerds are more sweaters or shirts
I think this might sum it up better than anything I've ever seen:
Goth: The world sucks.
Emo: My life sucks.
Yeah he has some lines about feeling sort of self conscious outside of the hoodie iirc.
Basically every Stardew character has layers and are worthy of love.
And I dont say that because I have 8 hoodies in my closet
I don't know I'm too scared of emily to get along with her
Anyway, Sebastian is kinda like me 6 years ago, but pretty
She's definitely a strange one! But v good hearted.
Which isnt fair
when i first started playing my big lesbian brain told me to romance haley
however she is terrifying
She's actually great
Please become friends with Haley, I second that she's great.
I haven't been able to get over my initial repulsion of Haley to find out what she's like down the road. <.<
Your brain knows what's up
My first playthrough, I didn't start liking characters until the first couple layers were picked through. Which... is nicely realistic I think.
i’ve never had the patience to play past the first year
i wish i did because i know the first year is hardly anything
How about playing with friends?
the switch feels much more accessible to me tho so im@hoping i can play more
When you have extra hands around it's less monotonous
i have one friend who plays stardew and he takes it too seriously for me
I've been playing a bit with a friend but I find it more stressful because time never pauses.
Yeah but like. For every fish I'm trying to catch? :l Good to know though!
The people i play with are usually experienced players so we know how to deal with a bit less time
How many fishing upgrades have you gotten?
They make it way easier
yeah i know that on my pc game but
There's a MP update coming that will make it far more appealing.
i just started on switch t-t
Oh handy
Oh thank god. Shared funds feels so bad.
Hopefully they'll let you trade cash if needed though
Pooling money at the start of the month or for upgrades would be nice
Also I'm always the person cleaning up so I'd end up with an excess of money
Those playing on an existing farm when the update arrives will maintain their shared money pool, but can visit the Mayor's house to divide funds evenly among all players (and can dump it all back into a single pool if they change their minds again later). Anyone starting a farm from scratch can decide how they want finances split at the start of the game.
So that's cool.
so like dragon is saying, you could pool at the start of the month, do your upgrades, then spread it back out again.
That's been one of my favorite things about the ongoing support of Stardew, they work really hard to make it accessible to players no matter what state their save is in.
"He". One dude. xD
I heard he was hiring
An amazing project for a single developer.
Oh I know! Though my understanding was that he's not working alone on it fully anymore.
Well, as of last April anyway, it was still a single person project. Maybe he did hire though.
Yeah he did basically all of it alone, he just had a publisher
The ports i think are by someone else
I wonder if they backed him financially. Usually that's how it works, but idk.
sighs Whiiiiich reminds me, I've got an article to write. Thanks for the chat all, I'll poke back in later.
Im sure he got funding help from the publisher
Oh and apparently TF2s crates now drop 100% unusuals, and the economy crashed
Some crates are worth like 10$ right now, like crate 60
Unfortunately I took a break right before it came out >.>
Yeah I saw something about hat economy crashing in another channel.
runs Okay, really. Work time. Guhhhh
flee while you can
Well at least we know that there is at least 1 guy working on TF2
We also know he might be clumsy
Still, thats one hell of a mistake to make
Wonder how theyll try to rectify it
On a sidenote, I hate how most social events in germany are all about drinking
Right, time to avoid germany them
i usually use a fishing farm
woter
i just wanna make it easier to get things for sebastian
You'll get more quartz by running the first 10 mine levels
The mining farm spawns too slowly to be that good
And the fish makes for a better gift overall since most people like sashimi
sashimi's a loved gift for sebastian and it can be made with any fish - though you're best off saving any fish you have that are worth less than 75g to use for sashimi
sashimi's worth 75g so you can make really low-priced fish (like, say, periwinkles or mussels which are only worth like 20/30g each) worth a little bit more
the only people who dislike it are willy, emily, evelyn, kent, and krobus; everyone else in town likes it and seb loves it
You can give all the people who don't like sashimi most fruit, veg or flowers so having it really simplifies gifting
don’t u need the house upgrade to cook
It is if you've just started
I prefer recycling trash for it late game though, I just line up the waters with crab pots and throw every CD or glasses in recyclers
Oh me too!
(wish I could do this in real life)
That gets you the refined stuff though so not great for gifts
I love the trash recyclers tbh they’re kinda fun?
They are
true, I mostly use it to make shiny glass pavements
My favourite trash is the newspaper
Getting cloth is really nice
Way easier than setting up wool
rabbits are better than sheep for wool
and newspaper is arguably better than rabbits
depends on how much trash you can haul up, which usually isn't very hard
The only problem with pots is accidentally picking them up when you empty and bait them
still much better than using a rod to fish
because you are one person fishing up one item at time and you have to be there, but if you line up 20+ per lake you do other stuff and come back to it
...so I guess the fishing farm could technically be trash recycle centre farm instead, can it?
Gfhgg the name just isn’t as exciting hah
They aren't trash pickers, they're miners of the anthropocene mineral layer
Well you can get trash from the ponds on the normal farm
Who needs to mine for oil when you can mine for plastic?
I'm tellin' ya
Give it a couple years and folks will be digging through old landfills looking for copper
^That already happens, just not primarily in America. Other countries where our garbage gets dumped has people doing that.
we've had people nicking lead from church roofs and taking phonelines for the copper in them lmao
anyway frozen tear (floors 40-79 in the mines) are also a loved gift for seb, if sashimi's not an option
Yeah, we've got lots of that stuff going on, but it's a slightly different topic.
No, like, i mean legit mining of old trash piles. Digging em up, grinding em up, sorting the bits for cool stuff
someone please send help, i can't stop humming the theme to outer wilds because i got bored and started trying to recreate it in ffxiv and then gave up bc i couldn't work it out all the way
Get a catchier song stuck
Oceloctopus: If you mean industrialized mining, that already happens in some places too, namely BC and India.
Really cool article about Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone over here: https://www.gq.com/story/stardew-valley-eric-barone-profile
Looks like a lead singer of a one hit wonder band
my mental image of CA has been this for so long
i don't know how to handle knowing what he looks like
LoL, yep, that's Mr. Barone himself.
He looks way better than his online avatar has lead us to think
I’m actually a bit jealous of his look
Like a cross between Shane and Sebastian, with a beard? <.<
"I make great games and also look like a supermodel and am probably a nice person who would take you to the airport if you needed it without asking"
He does kinda look like Sebastian with a beard from what Ive seen
his linkedin profile is so concise and humble
subject change: since fire emblem three houses are out, what do people think of it?
I'm crying over the fact that male Byleth cannot date Claude or Dimitri but I am happy that we have fishing minigame and gardening minigame
let me be homosexual gardening teacher in the game dammit
I'm just kicking myself for not getting a Switch yet. <.< I had just about talked my wife into getting me one for Christmas, and then I saw the David Mack drawings of Neil Gaiman's Death and Dream and had to have them <.<
Maybe birthday xD
Soooo pretty, and I've been a collector of Sandman stuff for 19 years or so. He's the reason I use Orpheus as a nick <.<
BUT, Fire Emblem looks amazing. Rami Ismail was touting it up on twitter.
the best fire emblem games are echoes: shadows of valentia, 6, 7, and 8, both games on gamecube and possibly this one as well
at some point they were running out of money so they made some... questionable quality stuff
TBH, the only one I played was the 3DS one, but I enjoyed it immensely. I've always enjoyed that genre, but just somehow missed that one mostly. I kind of want to try playing it from the start, but, meh.
there isn't a start, it's stories from different continents of the same world
7 and 6 are on the continent of Elibe, for example
the gamecube ones are Tellius
and Valentia is, as name indicates, on Valentia
each continent is divided into multiple nations and sometimes city states
Huh. Didn't know that. Would still like to play through them in order of release. 😛
Though it sounds vaguely like Final Fantasy, where each game is essentially its own entity.
it's more like, two games tells one story at time
they come in pairs
usually, though valentia decided to have both games in one game and you have to control two protagonists
the parties as well as inventory are separate so you have to use peddlers to send items over, and peddlers are limited in number
I’m just a little disappointed there’s so few mlm options :(
multi level marketing?
vfghbv no but you make a good point, male love male
ohhhh
that is a confusing acronym lol
Oh I should have figured it by context, but I just came back from dinner and saw the comment and was like, "Errr" I mean, mm, mfm, ff, ffm, mmm, fff, ff?, ?mf, like I get those
but mlm just tossed me
fair!!!
i’ve hit one heart with sebastian
Well I mean mlm tends to be a bit limited irl as well 😉
Zim discovers his almighty leaders never had any intention of coming to Earth and he loses confidence in himself for the first time in his life, which is the...
ZIIIIIIIIIIM
What if we kissed 😳 in a pyramid scheme 😳 and we're both guys
fe finally has canon gay?
i mean, "finally", there was canon gay in fates but it was v. limited
@silver maple :
Me: Mom can we have MLM Representation
Mom: We have MLM Representation at home
MLM Representation at home: WLW Representation
Fhdhxhgegsfhs yeah
i got my house upgrade bapyyyy
kitchen time!
and i’m at 2 hearts with sebastian OWO
The good times are here
Nice!!!!
>Not dating Shane
sometimes people don't want to date someone too similar to their own past self
though I befriended him for the blue chickens
and I'm very glad that he got better
personally i went after him precisely because i could relate
that works too, dating is based on empathy as well
also i guess i have to like...... pay money now or something??
(or level crafting/gathering classes some more but actually how about i don't do that because i hate it)
...what the heck is gunbreaker
I can only imagine someone who shoves cards inside guns
uses a bigass gunsword
The Shadowbringers tank.
kaiba style
And it's amazing.
funnily enough the gun does not fire bullets AT the enemy
Think Squall from FFVIII
the bullets are magic and make the sword do special things.
ok this sounds awesome
The gunblade: weapon of choice for Final Fantasy protagonists everywhere. We break down the Gunbreaker class in FFXIV: Shadowbringers.
thancred
when I get a new job irl I'll definitely play this game
honestly i've been having an absolute blast so far
XIV now has more subs than WoW ever did in its prime.
this is going to sound dumb, but, the closest way i can describe it is a final fantasy game that just has other people running around
like........ okay, i've played world of warcraft almost since that game launched
and lately, even though it has cutscenes and stuff, your character mostly just sits in the background holding the latest Plot McGuffin while the Real Characters do the fun stuff, y'know?
meanwhile, over in XIV, my character actually feels like the protagonist
it's just a different feel that's very refreshing and i love it
The cutscenes in FFXIV are amazing. The MSQ is just balls out brilliant.
i'm only a little ways into the MSQ, i'm about to start the titan stuff once i get the full game so i can keep levelling
I've not played Shadowbringers yet, but I hear it's even better than Stormblood
Yeah thats the funny parrt of FFs gunswords
Or rather Gunblades
Only one of them fires
the ranking i generally hear from people is that best-to-weakest it's 1. shadowbringers 2. heavensward 3. stormblood
And thats the one that straight up transforms between blades and guns
Yeah, accurate GGF
Yeah I think you're right UNO. In FFVIII it was a cheese mechanic. Basically you wanted to time a button press with your strike, and it would increase your damage a bit.
@wide ember if you're interested, there's a 'benchmark' that'll let you check how well the game will run and also has the entire character creator, expansion races included, and the free trial of the game lets you play with certain limitations up to a level 35 cap
Yup
Expend a bullet to amplify your strike
Its simultaniously more, and less realistic
i don't want realism i want cool factor
nods It was just sorta silly imo. 😛
Frankly I think its biggest flaw is that its less cool
Than just a sword that shoots bullets
But VIII is my least favorite FF game.
In fact, imagine it rapidfiring as you slash down
It looks badass in FFXIV, and my boss, who wrote that article, absolutely adores playing the Gunbreaker, and was skeptical before it came out.
So your slash gets extended by a fan of bullets
I mean FFXIVs animations are nice in general
And over the top
To the point where you can lose your own character in the spectacle
and that's the way i like it
Yeah
also you know you can turn down the effects right
i have them turned down (but not disabled) for other players and kept at full for myself so i can see the cool stuff i do
The part to be aware of during Shadowbringers, is that the world of light will give you migraines if you're photosensitive.
constant overwhelming daytime will do that to ya i guess
Ohh, it has my favourite gunblade attack type
i've had a few gunbreakers in dungeons and they look cool
The one where you stab them, then let it explode
it won't
there's rogue, which turns into ninja; there's really not a way so far as i can tell to do a "thief" class that's as interesting as the others
Lame
i keep falling in love with the characters from the base classes and then getting sad when it switches over to the cast for the job quests ;w;
Okay, but the "Rogue" class belongs to a guild of thieves.
like, no, i don't want to hang out with the ninjas, i want to keep helping jacke and his merry little band of misfits
I don't think it gets a mug type skill or anything, no
mostly bc jacke is Cute but all midlander hyur boys are, so
I mean, yes, but a rogue is a different thing from a thief
Well, I think it actually has a skill called mug, but it doesn't steal anything.
it makes items more likely to drop if it's used before or as the killshot but it hardly affects anything
Ah that's right. Been a while since I played and that was hardly my primary. Ninja was a bad ass class.
Okay, so how is rogue different from thief, and what would you like to see?
my only issue with ninja is that if i level it up any higher i'm going to have to think of an easier way to hit the mudras
(They may end up making it a special class like Blue Mage I guess?)
Well, stealing items is the main thief thing
Nah, as you play the class it becomes second nature, GGF.
okay that's twice you've said that now, what does ggf mean
That disorients the enemy, steals items to help his team, and exposes weak points
Yknow, stuff like that
Oh and throwing Gil as an attack
That is 100% neccessary
I'm not sure that the thief as you're wanting it would be suitable in a generally PvE game.
That being said, a FFT style thief could be pretty badass.
because the only definitions i can find are things i'm not really a fan of
I mean
GGF Gotta Go Fast
oh
pats
I guess that non-healer supports doesnt fit into the "holy trinity"
But thats also why I dont like the holy trinity, so 🤷
Yeah, but I mean, they made dancer DPS and it has a lot of support
So they could do the same with thief, easily.
every ffxiv class is a dps that dresses up as other things
I suppose, its just that with rogue already existing, I imagine thief as a class that doesnt do much fighting
Blackjack an enemy, maybe
Or throw smokebombs
Paralyzing arrows
That kinda stuff
doesn't do much fighting
playing an mmo
pick one
Though most of this sounds like stuff thats only relevant in PvP now that I think about it
Yeah, that'll never happen. That doesn't fit the scope of FFXIV.
Yeah, exactly.
Because it has to be able to solo level
And FFXIVs PvP is, as far as Im aware, very limited
Solo level by stealing xp from higher level players
There's actually a sort of moba mode in PvP
but yeah, it's not a focus of FFXIV at all.
I just mainly heard that FFXIV PvP uses less/different skills?
They're not constantly balancing things for PvP that breaks PvE
I think so? I only went to PvP land once, and then left.
¯_(ツ)_/¯
i went there once because an npc told me to, and then another npc shouted at me a lot so i was like "okay then" and left and never went back
Well, Im kind of a PvP player so maybe thats why I have this idea of thief
Well that and the fact that GW2s thief actually does stuff like that at times
cool, that's gw2, i guess it works there but it wouldn't here
Would be nice to have a class that does it all the time
I suppose
Im confused why they went with rogue over thief though
Thief is one of FFs oldest jobs
Rogue as far as I can tell was created for FFXIV
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Hm, why has there not been a Star Wars MMO where the lightsabers actually feel like lightsabers
I mean, out of all 2 of them? Why do lightsabers not feel like lightsabers in -any- Star Wars video game, really.
Answer: Lightsaber physics would be crazy hard to animate on a case by case basis.
Oh thats not even the thing that bothers me
Its the fact that you can be hit by a lightsaber 10 times
And barely have a scratch
Theyre supposed to cut through anything like butter
Instead they feel like Styrofoam bats
Yeah I can't argue there, but to be honest the same can be said for any melee weapon in any RPG I've ever played, period.
There are a few battle simulators where melee combat is realistic, but that's about it.
To a degree
But a sword, especially against armour, wont be lethal with one strike
In fact, youll need a bunch probably
And I mean, it's not like guns are any more realistic either. How many games have you played where your character can be shot 20 times?
With an uzi
imagine someone hitting you once and you instantly die
that sounds like the opposite of fun to me
Depends on the armor, really, and the directness of the blow, but yeah I get your point. Most injury while in armor came from impacting the armor or concussive damage.
But yeah, that. That's why it doesn't work. Because realism isn't fun.
I mean, if we were to be faithful to star wars, the fun part would be the fencing
The strike would simply be the end goal
at which point latency screws you over
Which would, again, be impossible to animate realistically.
realism is all well and good up until it impacts on the fun you're having
Not sure about animate, stance-based melee combat has even been done by a small studio
Latency is a good point though
There's so many ways that lightsaber combat breaks down in video games.
Hm
I do wonder though, if it cant be made to work if one were to focus on it
Guess the question is how do you make the PvE interesting
If everything just dies in one hit, and fencing against more than one enemy would be hard
Until humans can utilize the force and anticipate where their opponent is going to strike, it's not going to happen.
Lightsaber combat wasn't physical fencing, it was mental.
I mean, sure, but thats the part of realism we can break
Physical fencing works as a substitute, and stance-based melee is a genre that exists
True enough. I mean, Bushido Blade's old engine could have worked.
But that would be -just- a fencing game.
not an MMO
Mmh
You could make the PvE basically Dynasty Warriors
But I cant help but feel that that isnt terribly exciting
So again, fencing OR MMO, pick one.
Guess thats the problem with Jedi, their fights are only interesting when against other jedi
Although, hm
Ill probably do a small thought experiment to explore this
I have always wondered what the optimal TTK for skill expression in PvP games is, so I guess I can think about that as well
How about something like absolver or for honor?
Yeah those were the stance-based games I was thinking of
Absolver moreso than For Honour because I have played a bit of Absolver
Question is, how do you make group-based content interesting
Yeah it's not a great style for pvp since having others around ruins precision having
PvP can work if you just make it primarily 1v1
Or about disengaging and outmanouvering the enemy
PvE is more what Im unsure about
Something dark souls like?
Well Dark Souls is a solo game
Monster Hunter like then?
Huh, fighting big monsters and/or robots
Or small groups of enemies that you would deal with like you would with enemies in PvP
That could work
Dark Souls is primarily a solo game, but their are multiplayer elements
Well, lets see if the Disney Acquisition of Blizzard happens
They might try their hand at a Star Wars MMO to cash in if they do that
Oh god is that on the table?
Didn't know they'd fallen to that level
Disneys investors have urged them to do it
No idea if Blizzard has any plans to do it, but
Any company can be bought for money
The question is merely how much
Personally I kinda hope it doesnt happen before Disney becomes synonymous with media
wait
But also kinda hope it does for a new Star Wars MMO
Disney and Apple have ZERO desire to buy activision… this is fake news that a small journalist website made to stir up drama yesterday…
If you actually read into it, Both Disney and Apple responded saying that the idea is just silly and neither want to get into the video game industry. This story was created because a random single independent investor thought it would be a cool idea
Disney needs to be exploded
and right now I'm not sure how literal I'm being with that statement
That post was from a few days ago too though
Sorry I should have been clear about the source.
Fair enough
That was from a forum post on Blizzard.net, and is just an opinion. I'm looking around, though, and they're not wrong.
This is something that got blown WAY out of proportion.
Does look that way
Which is what happens when people don't choose their words carefully.
Im just hoping for something new in the MMO genre
Its not dying per se, but its stagnated real bad
Oh believe me, I know. There are a couple interesting things coming up, but nothing that has me super super excited.
TBH, I think the next "big" MMO will be in VR.
Actually there is one thing that has me excited
PSO2 finally being released in the west
I just hope that EU either gets it as well
Or that the latency wont be an issue
Which is neat and all, but let's face it, that game is 7 years old, so might feel dated to the west at this point.
I mean
Anything 7+ years old is on older engines.
Ive played it as little as a year ago a bit on the Japanese servers
And it was great
Sure the graphics havent aged well, but the combat itself is still one of theb est
nods I did say might 😛 some people will be fine with it.
Yeah fair enough, the graphics do look dated
TBH, we've got an incoming wave of Superhero MMOs that I'm looking for. City of Titans and Ship of Heroes, mostly.
Valiance Online can blow a goat.
looking forward to* that is
Those are like, emulators of City of Heroes, right?
I think a lot of "MMOs" are following the lobbied server model these days though.
No
Neither of those are emulators of CoH.
Spiritual successors then?
Yeah.
Ah
City of Titans is Unreal 4, though
Yeah the lobby thing is just far easier to do and cheaper
And while open world has its appeal
And so far, the tiny glimpses we've gotten look amazing.
Historically the maps tend to become deserted
So the question is whether or not its even worth to put money into open world
Yeah. I've played some Outlaws of the Old West off and on, and I've got like 2k hours on 7 Days I think.
But those aren't traditional "MMORPG" formula, by any stretch.
True
But some of my favourite are lobby-based
PSO2 from the 100 hours Ive played, Dragon Nest
I think the most recently released MMO that anyone really got excited about, and stuck with, is probably Monster Hunter World
Im not sure Id even count it as an MMO
Basically
Torchlight Frontiers has some potential.
Legends of Aria has me intrigued as well.
There are a lot of indie "throwback" MMOs out there.
For me its PSO2 and A:IR if that ever gets anything done
A:IR mostly because skyships
And Crowfall sounds like it could be fun, but I doubt its gonna be released in the next 3 years
There was another one that looked cool, trying to think of the name in my old man brain... but basically the earth shifts on its tilt, and stops rotating, so 1 day is 1 solar year.
So there are no stationary cities. People live on these massive walking structures
Last Oasis, that's it.
Last Oasis is a Nomadic Survival MMO. Earth has stopped rotating, and the last human survivors need to outrun the scorching Sun in a massive Open World.WalkersTraverse the world on wooden wind-powered, walking machines inspired by Theo Jansen's amazing strandbeests. Walkers c...

Personally, Id want an MMO with a gamemode like World Triggers Rank Wars
Those are really cool
The premise looks cool, but frankly I didn't like their community. At all.
Im not big on survival games in general
nods This is like Survival meets EVE, as I understand it, in a lot of ways.
One that you might get into is Camelot Unchained
Since you seem PvP focused.
Also waiting for the next wave of Star Citizen news. <.< That one has grown quiet.
This looks interesting, too:
Dual Universe is a Continuous Single-Shard sandbox Sci-Fi MMORPG, focusing on emergent gameplay & player-driven in-game economy, politics, trade and warfar
I recall not liking the combat of Camelot Unchained
Did... you actually play it?
Nah, just watched it
It's still pretty early in development as I understand it, but they had some really ambitious mechanics planned.
Something about making your own skills, right?
Like being able to levitate a tree or rock to block arrows, stuff like that.
Mmh
Well, I guess Ill check it out again if it comes out
Same as Crowfall, I suppose
One other MMO I kinda want to exist is something like that MMO arc in HxH
HxH?
Had an arc about a sort of VR MMO (except not quite)
Speaking of which, I dont think we will actually see VR MMOs any time soon
Too much to still iron out with VR
Define soon? There's one that should be out in about 2-3 years. I mean, technically there's one out now.
But there's one in production called Zenith that looks to have potential.
Admittedly though, VR is where mainstream video games were in like the 80's and 90's. But it'll grow faster than those did
Well the more important part would be defining VR MMO
Main issue I see is movement and combat
Which are kinda core
Hm, let me look into Zenith real quick
Hm
So, I couldnt find anything on movement, but combat is sort of an active slashing system?
Mmhmm
I mean, any VR MMO is going to be that, at this point. That's half the appeal of VR.
Last I heard, movement will be done using the thumbsticks.
Unless you have something like WalkOVR probably.
Ah
Well it would be tricky to coordinate at first, but
It could work
I assume skills are also done with button presses?
Could be, but it could also be certain movement combinations.
For example, cross your arms over your chest, then reach forward to throw daggers
Or something, that's just a basic example. But there are trigger buttons on controllers, so that's also got potential/likelihood.
Hm
That reminds me, I need to install Gorn and Telefrag on my VR box <.<
That does sound like it has potential
So long as the whole motion sickness thing is solved
Actually, Zenith directly addresses that.
Oh?
One of the coolest mechanics in Conjure Strike was the gesture-based abilities and Zenith will be incorporating these into its combat. MMORPG experiences typically keep players in-game for long periods of time but VR games are more physically demanding and there’s a balancing act that developers have to manage. The Ramen VR team is shaping melee and ranged combat that sounds more engaging that just swinging your arms around, utilizing gesture-based abilities and melee inspired by the rhythm game Beat Saber. Zenith will also feature an out-of-body style of locomotion that is designed to limit motion sickness.
VR motion sickness, concurrent players and physical exertion are three main pillars Ramen VR is focusing on as it builds Zenith into a functional game.
Out-of-body style locomotion?
"gesture-based abilities"
What, do they mean third person
My guess is more that you target a place, and the game sort of "Warps" you there, but I don't know for sure.
Mmh
I know that's how like the Oculus "house" works.
Yeah I guess
I just think that kinda, at least partially, ruins the fun
But it is a solution to that problem
Possibly. Again, that's a guess, so don't hold them to that.
Concurrent player base is 100% of the problem right now though with VR games.
The pool of games is huge, and the users isn't.
Oculus Quest will help with that some, I think.
VR is expensive, both the gear itself, and the rooms you need for it
Even if the graphics aren't as good, the cordless connection is a game changer.
I would argue the fact that you dont need a specific PC for it is the bigger thing
Meh, you don't -really- need a specific one for Rift, either. We ran it on my wife's gaming laptop for a while.
Our current VR box is my old gaming machine. All it has is a GTX 960 video card and like 8MB ram
Course, the game we mainly play is Beatsaber <.<
I mean, a GTX 960 is significantly better than what I got
Ah, fair. That's literally the low end of what Oculus can use. =/
Ive got a 750 ti
I got lucky and got my GTX 960 before the Crypto card boom
Got the RTX 2080 when I upgraded this time though, since I use it for work (tax writeoffs, booya)
Mmh
Im surprised there isnt an MMO where the players can create content
Seems like a win-win ,the players have more to do and get to channel their creativity, the devs on the other hand have less work to do
because it would rapidly turn into a cesspool
you vastly overestimate the average user
^Fair assessment.
xD
But filter systems and ability to sort by threshhold
Would alleviate that to a large degree
On the other hand, some of those games that had "Foundries" like Neverwinter and City of Heroes, people did some amazing stuff with.
Meh, a set of volunteer mods could alleviate it completely.
Especially with conditions of, "If you break these rules, you'll be banned, forever, no second chances"
Plus imagine troll raids
Youre about to finish the final boss when suddenly, off-screen thwomp
xD
Or you beat the final boss, only to suddenly face the first boss again
But some of their attacks are different
I mean
The custom map creator for Warcraft 3 and/or brood war depending on who you ask, was a cesspool, but it Did spawn a genre of games that now is a huge industry
Truth
More than just one tbqh
Mmh
I mean like the warcraft 3 custom map creator but MMO
nods Well, again, Neverwinter has (or had) something like that, but it was specific to that game.
as far as the original DOTA, that was heavily modded
I played on a few custom shards of UO, and custom WoW servers
but that still required more technical knowledge than your average person has
specifically in the hosting aspect
I was thinking sort of a mix between WC3s map editor and Mario Maker
like, if you could provide the infrastructure and a way of creating it
The infrastructure really is the biggest hurdle
Yeah, anything outside of lobbied servers is going to be more than most people could handle
But with all the server hosting companies out there, it's not beyond the realm of possibility, provided you were willing to pay out.
Oh the content would obviously have to be instanced
Possibly downloaded seperately as well
In fairness, though, there are people out there hosting their own versions of City of Heroes, with SEGS
Well, I figure that players could buy a microtransaction token with which to subscribe to individual servers, that way the custom makers get some incentive
Mmh
but they still pay for the infrastructure
Yeah
without having to have a full subscription service for a bunch of garbage games
Im not sure if it should be a mandatory thing to play them
Or just a way to reward the maker
Both options have merit
Anyway, Id also say that it makes more sense for action combat over tab targetting
well I was thinking that they could make it so that sort of thing is customizable
like, provide a few basic combat systems, but also allow for a more in-depth means of editing it
because you're trying to get innovation
That could work
so you need a heavily customizable but still accessible editing system
The main issue I saw with tab target is that that style relies heavily on unique boss mechanics moreso than boss attacks
Which often is done with custom scripts from what I know
Thats a bit harder to give players access to without possibly breaking things
Could just go for like a massive pool of variables
and then the designer picks like 3-4
and then customize how they express
Because end of the day, let's face it, there's not that many boss mechanics out there. Sure, occasionally innovation happens, but simply because of the complexity, most things are recycled.
And if all you're going for is a framework, then that's fine.
It doesnt have to be boss mechanics in the case of an action game
Strictly speaking, most of God Eaters enemies have the same 4 or 5 mechanics
Its the attacks that differ
In an action combat system, enemy movement and attacks would be the focus, and there is a lot you can do with fairly little there
Personally Id make a boss who spams footdives and fingerlasers
I'd just like to point out that people are pretty creative and that saying that "There' s not that many boss mechanics out there" kinda feels like saying, "There's no way people will beat ocarina of time in 17 minutes"
I guess its more of a "really every mechanic is just kicker with extra steps" take
Mechanics will inevitably overlap or repeat
Like, powertreads in dota 2 are based off a bug with the fan of knives ability
I just feel like the "MUST BE A SUCCESS" mindset of MMO companies make it so that innovation is too risky for them.
Well, partially
There are still MMOs that innovate every once in a while
Its just that few bigger studios take the risk
Or they take the wrong risks
RIP Wildstar
but that's why we need better infrastructure for indie MMOs
And/or better marketting/funding support systems
Excuse me the off-topic in this off-topic channel, but there is something I have to get off my chest.
The JoJos Bizarre Adventure Part 5 Finale was brilliant.
Dang I missed the monster hunter discussion
I would describe it as an mmo
But it’s the only mmo I’ve ever played that feels intrinsically rewarding
Like I’m not farming because I need gear, I’m farming because it’s fun
Hm
Judgement just gave me a sidequest with a timed riddle
That requires japanese knowledge
Which I do not have
Google translate?
still not fair to my deeps tho
Yeah I guess
Also, I have this really bad feeling that one character I just met in Judgement who I really like is gonna be the bad guy
Wait no, now I think someone else is
Ugh, I hate the early stages of the game where your prediction keeps shifting
blegh
wanna do more coding
What language?
good language, used it through most of uni
my old discord bot was written in py3 too
how fast does a bot need to be?
im ok with beanspeed
im not ok with line 117 ``` self.titleLabel.setText(soup.find_all("h2")[7].string + " " + soup.find(class_="submitted").contents[0][0:-3] + " " + str(soup.find(class_="submitted").contents[1]))
very cool of me to write this all in one line with no comments
im getting list index out of range
which... uh
which list
which list, PYTHON
Was slower than I liked.
well it's a single statement, you could break out the complex assignments into variables with meaningful names then use string templating to construct the string. Then your errors will have more meaning
This is true
see i hate how picky python is about whitespace, but clearly i need to go try other things and i'll come back to python crying and begging for it to take me back a year later or something lol
the obligatory whitespace keeps my code presentable
that stuff bugs me too but i agree lol if anything itd force me to make my code look nice
i havent done too much python i usually stay in my cpp lane, but i should probly get more into it
I feel so tired, I want a cuttlefish petting tank
imagine being someone whose code isn't organized unless the language makes you clean it up
kfjdhg i just like. cleaning and stuff so, that's just me i guess
:(
i like making my code into pretty organized blocks ;w;
My personal code is like my closet, just shove stuff in there haphazardly because no one else has to see it
Of course, that makes it harder for me to find stuff I'm looking for
i can't find stuff even when i HAVE everything organized,,
Pretty much anything I use now uses autoformatting like Prettier etc, since it's a style guide and a formatter
python whitespace scoping bugs can be tricky sometimes, although usually it's indicative of something trying to do too much in a single body
Sad that ides have kinda killed the tab vs space war
tab feels nicer to use...
i prefer tab too
ides turn tabs into spaces
if they're configured to
that's why there is the common .editorconfig notations to define these ide wide rules.
This is used by visual studio code, visual studio, all jetbrains IDE's (intellij, pycharm, etc) and many more
with .net core, omnisharp rules for style and formatting are defined in the .editorconfig too.
also tabs vs spaces, with python the style guide they public (pep-0008): Spaces are the preferred indentation method.
https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0008/#tabs-or-spaces
I tend to opt for the languages specs, like this, but don't really care as long as it's consistent and enforced by the repository.
Coming back to python after learning other languages was a nice experience
It was the first language I learnt
It's much nicer when you have a good text editor / IDE since it helps with the whitespace management
I find organizing code is more or less mandatory
I barely understand what the hell I was doing at the best of times
Dont need to make the code disorganized
True
Though I know a guy who is a brilliant coder but cant organize his code to save his life
Im not sure how he keeps track tbqh
There are plenty of people that are smart and write amazing stuff, but the problem with writing stuff as clever as you can is that it's incredibly difficult to debug, since you've outsmarted yourself half the time
Yeah
Each framework, language, etc, often define their style for composition and style. Sticking to these helps a lot in the long run
True, though even with the most organized code, reading something someone else wrote is a major pain
Even if its just small style differences like where they put the subfunctions
I guess you get used to it and work out techniques to understand it all
Most of what I've been working on over the last year is legacy maintenance and optimization, so I've been working purely on improving other people's implementations
Drawing pictures helps a lot for me
Makes sense
What do you mean younger, youre like 15
you'd be surprised. i taught at a game development camp for kids once, and two girls in my group were seven and learning python
Fair enough
I didnt start til I was in high school, and I cant say I ever really got into it, despite studying comp sci
Kinda wish you could just study theoretical Comp Sci without any of the practical stuff
shoutout to those of us whose first steps into coding were on neopets pages
They do coding in primary schools now don't they?
In some places I can imagine so
I feel old now
Probably not in germany
i think i first did like basic html in high school
not that i do Real Coding now or anything
I had effectively a comp sci class in high school, where we learned, SQL, HTML and uh
Delphi
Which is like a modified version of pascal
Then in uni I had to learn Java, C++ and C
Which is a shame because I hate those 3 languages
Oh and assembly language
oooh assembly
Its dreadful
I mean its cool conceptually
But I hate writing and reading code in it
i found a really good guide to c++ for...something
my problem is i go to learn a language for some purpose or other, make what i need, and then never use it again so i forget everything
i just make novelties 😛
I think Ive only ever coded 2 things outside of school/uni work
i only did coding in college
A sort of probability calculator for the odds of drawing a specific set of cards from a deck in a specific turn order
i was required to take computer science 1 (which was in python), but i also had to do some interactive coding stuff in my games classes even though i wasn't a programming concentration
me: today i think i will make a random acronym generator for OVC
me:
me: (sighs and gets out the javascript)
Ah
Yeah I basically went to study comp sci to have the tools to make games
But also have a backup because the games industry is quite hard to get into
it is! but there's no harm in working outside of games until you can get in. a lot of people do that.
Well, several backups, really
Yeah I guess, for now I gotta focus on getting my masters degree first
👏
💪 good luck!!
Thanks
Im almost done with my bachelor, and the worst (aka frikkin hardware) is behind me
Seriously at this point Ill probably get a panic attack if I ever have to look at the schematics of a microchip
anyone else get mild anxiety when making builds
like "what if there is something better"
What kind of builds
the only downside is that i keep getting distracted by the video and messing up my crafting steps
mass shooting at a garlic festival. WTF america
I've been to that garlic festival before, hits close to home
That stuff is scarier when it's local news lemme tell ya
I can imagine
yeah
the aurora movie shooting happened like, 20 minutes from where I was living at the time

in my defense, once i burned my hand i decided to stop being an idiot and have both eyes back
well i mean i didn't burn my hand again after that, so,
also in my defense i thought i was being super-efficient by not taking the warm compress off my eye while i made tea. i was not.
It does take a while before you can make tea without fully seeing it

@olive oak Friemd
does anyone know a good FM/AM station? I just bought a real radio
I'm listening to FM 92 right now
106.1
I mean... where are you?
Oh
I can probably go on my PC and get a virtual 106.1 denver...
But that wouldn't help you with your, "I have a tool that I want to use" problem
The Team 1200 if you like sports
So, back in my day (creak), you had to scan the stations slowly, little by little, until you found something you liked.
106.1 is a thing, but it's probs not the same out there as it is in Denver...
1200 would be AM, yeah?
ya
Yeah see, it's not a thing here in Portland at all, afaik. We have an AM 1080
And AM 1190 KEX for Portland Trailblazer games.
I do have a FM 106 here, it has music right now
appox how old are you @supple sleet ?
40 😛
Cool
you're the second person who isn't part of supergiant who's older than me
(30)
I am also 30 though... I'm old too...
I have owned an -actual- AM radio in my lifetime, without an FM band. xD
The old kids club
AND a black and white TV
