coarse siren
#

So I just

#

have a Heavensward code

#

That I don't know what to do with

copper lark
#

you using steam?

coarse siren
#

Nope, actual Squeenix

copper lark
#

you have to input both still- oh

coarse siren
#

Which by the way their website is terrible.

copper lark
#

then i dunno

#

yeah the mog station and the lodestone are both awful

#

they need a basket feature for the extra things

coarse siren
#

It's like - how do you have a competently made game but your website makes me want to rip my hair out in frustration?

copper lark
#

its square enix they can never have an 100% complete game

coarse siren
#

The thing is, I didn't realize I already had Heavensward [because I'm an idiot and I cannot comprehend the website that well]

#

So I got the free Heavensward

copper lark
#

oh heck

coarse siren
#

So I just have a Heavensward

#

Despite owning Heavensward

#

How many times can I say Heavensward before it loses meaning?

copper lark
#

im scared that people are gonna miss heavensward bc they use the thing that skips to level 60

coarse siren
#

It's helpful for people who have already done the game me thinks

copper lark
#

yeah ! but

coarse siren
#

Because it's not like WoW where the story from the previous expansions are not that important and the grind is so boring now

#

But for newbies it can ruin the sense of world building

copper lark
#

my friend was considering just skipping to level 60 to get to shadowbringers quicker

#

i had to yell

coarse siren
#

I might use the skip if I ever make another character after already doing everything on my main character

copper lark
#

im considering it for my alt on the eu servers

coarse siren
#

Because listen

#

If I have to go through

#

another banquet

copper lark
#

fghjdkgfdbndf

coarse siren
#

I'll shriek my little heart out

copper lark
#

i cant deal with how bratty alphinaud is in ARR for a second time

coarse siren
#

He's so cute though

copper lark
#

he is!! i love him

coarse siren
#

GOD I hate Square Enix because I am weak for extremely pretty boys and the main reason. The absolute main reason.

#

I got into FF14

#

is because boy hot

copper lark
#

i came bc my friends were playing it i stayed for the pretty ladies

coarse siren
#

Also I cannot tell what age these people are

copper lark
#

and the attatchment to my real son

#

alphi

#

i know ages!!

coarse siren
#

Like are they short because they are kids or short because they are short

copper lark
#

alphinaud and his sister are 16 in ARR

coarse siren
#

Oh holy crap

copper lark
#

elezen get a growth spurt at age 20

#

theyre 18 now

chilly briar
#

@coarse siren I take it you haven't used many japanese websites, it's good by their standards... shadefear

coarse siren
#

No, I have

#

I have seen a lot of Japanese media

copper lark
#

thats scary to think about codex

coarse siren
#

but in FF14 there are people who look like adults and then people who toe the line between adult and children

#

and I'm like

#

"I don't want to feel dirty"

chilly briar
#

I lived there for a year and dealt with many japanese websites, they're all terrible, every single one of them

coarse siren
#

OH

#

I just got what you meant

copper lark
#

alphinaud and alisaie may be kids but that doesnt stop.. the fandom...

coarse siren
#

I've heard that Japanese websites are terrible yes

#

In design

#

Duskwight Elezen? Very attractive

#

I am very upset about that one Duskwight Elezen in the lancer quest and I miss him dearly, we could have been married.

copper lark
#

oh F

coarse siren
#

F

copper lark
#

theres an elezen who is

#

the only man i would have married but

coarse siren
#

I think FF14 is the first MMORPG that actually makes me want to play male

#

Because they're soft and not oozing with so much masculinity I can taste it

#

Well not all of them but still

#

Anyway, I should excuse myself to study for my exam tomorrow. Thank you for talking to me about FF14 though

copper lark
#

no problem ! good luck

#

i could talk ffxiv all day lol

hasty kernel
#

Yknow, when it comes to that

#

FFXIV is pretty tame

#

Just remember, TERA exists

#

Shudder

copper lark
#

i hate tera ughghhhh

hasty kernel
#

Im mostly indifferent, but I hate the elin

#

Anyway, take GW2

#

That is the MMO that doesnt have that nonsense at all

copper lark
#

ovven i take it you like gw2 a little

hasty kernel
#

You could say that, yes

#

But in this case, its just objectively true

#

The only short races are a race of molepeople and the Asura, both of whom are very clearly not children

copper lark
#

yeah children races creep me out

#

i dont like the ffxiv lalafell but theyve grown on me

hasty kernel
#

Which isnt to say GW2's Asura arent cute, they definitely are, but there is none of that ickyness there

#

And in general there is less of that all too prevalent skimpyness in armour

#

I actually dont know what its like in PSO2

serene tulip
#

I'd be OK with children races if they were antisexualized.

hasty kernel
#

That would require race-only outfits

#

Which is its own can of worms

serene tulip
#

Child race of kobolds for example.

#

Unsexy kobolds.

hasty kernel
#

Official artwork for Nessa

north hamlet
#

Why ankle floats

#

I'm so confused

hasty kernel
#

Are you gonna question her?

#

She can pull that look off, so why not

copper lark
#

shes CUTE

#

UGH

opaque quail
#

Safety!!

ionic viper
#

it's marina but pokemon

hasty kernel
#

And more attractive

ionic viper
#

you take that back

copper lark
#

discourse in the women fandom i see

ionic viper
#

it's okay marina i still love you

#

women fandom jfghkdjhgd

hasty kernel
#

Marina is still good

#

But she cant compete with Nessa

sly stump
#

i wish nintendo would stop dressing their darkskinned girls/women so scantily

#

like please it's getting more and more conspicuous

#

please give nessa some pants, or like, a full swimsuit

tardy anchor
#

oboy is it like A Thing........urgh i havent been following it

#

😔

sly stump
#

It's Marina, it's Nessa, it's the Gerudo ... that's just off the top of my head

languid finch
#

I haven't really kept track of it

sly stump
#

I don't follow nintendo super actively but I know I've seen it criticized and they sure are continuing the trend

languid finch
#

are there really not that much light skinned ones like that?

pearl garnet
#

Hi uwu

velvet fjord
#

the gerudo come to mind'

pearl garnet
#

Which conference did you like more?

velvet fjord
#

gah it's hard to pick one
microsoft was really cool because cyberpunk, bethesda was cool because doom eternal and deathloop, nintendo was really really cool because botw2

pearl garnet
#

I really liked the PC gamer and Microsoft Indies and cyberpunk

#

Also Cris Tales took my breath away

#

Idk why but it reminds me of Chrono Trigger

hasty kernel
#

I should probably try the demo of that game

#

I liked Squeenix because of FF7 remake and Ubisoft because of punk grandma

#

But they all had like one highlight and the rest was bleh

velvet fjord
#

I was with ff7 remake until ps4 exclusive

#

then I immediately stopped caring because it's 2019 and there's no reason to not release it on pc

hasty kernel
#

Besides porting not being nearly as easy as people think it is

coarse siren
#

To continue the brief reference to Nintendo; their darker skinned character are more likely to be scantily clad or to be like... what's it called

#

Bolder? than the lighter-skinned counterparts

#

You see it in Splatoon, I think a few of the pokemon characters, In that clown game, Arms?

#

[Splatoon 2 to clarify]

#

And the Gerudo are basically meant to be brown-skinned

wide ember
#

[s]so we want leucistic unsexy kobold in bikini[/s]

pearl garnet
#

I wanted to see some Chrono Trigger news <\3

wide ember
#

it's not wrong as observation goes unfortunately

#

Chrono Trigger... I wonder if SE remembers it

pearl garnet
#

Me too

#

The last thing I know about the game is the Steam port

#

Now that I remember, ¿what happened with Chrono Break?

hasty kernel
#

Hm, Im not sure that observation is correct

#

See Twintelle

#

Id say Darkskinned characters are more likely to be the fit/sporty type, and the clothing corresponds to that archetype

#

Not that Im complaining

tardy anchor
#

hmmm, i think thats a very broad generalization to make, and games companies should recognize that too, i think.

wide ember
#

Ana and Pharah are thankfully dressed in non-stereotypical ways, not nintendo though

hasty kernel
#

Though the pattern doesnt even hold there

tardy anchor
#

if its enough of a pattern that people notice it strongly, a few exceptions don't shake it off enough, in my opinion

sly stump
#

I think ... when you're saying "dark-skinned characters are [broad generalization]", there's an issue there no matter what

like, "dark-skinned characters are more likely to be fit and sporty" ... Black people being more athletic/fit is very much a harmful stereotype

tardy anchor
#

mhm, that too!

hasty kernel
#

I think its more seen as a pattern because those characters tend to be more popular for uh

#

Obvious reasons

sly stump
#

and the fact that it's combined with this very skimpy clothing on girl characters specifically (stereotypes of girls & women of color being hypersexual) ... is a very bad look

hasty kernel
#

Like, I knew of Olivia but not Hapu

#

Or Burnet for that matter

tardy anchor
#

i think its always important to keep eyes out for patterns that reinforce stereotypes, and keep them out of your original work/do what you can to break them in fanworks? people complain bc of the real world implications

#

but yeah, nintendo can do better

sly stump
#

not to mention that "dark-skinned characters are more popular for fanservice" ... again, hypersexualization of girls and women of color

hasty kernel
#

Yeah thats fair, Im just looking over it, and Im thinking its not actually a pattern

sly stump
#

no, it's a pattern.

hasty kernel
#

Because I can find way more examples against than for it

#

Theyre just characters that arent as visible

#

So it might be a case of perception-created pattern

wide ember
#

it would be a problem if the realistic ones are in indie games that are not very visible in the first place and the stereotypical ones are in the AAA games that gain more visibility

sly stump
#

i wouldn't call twintelle "unsexualized" -- she has more skin covered, but she's still in a catsuit

hasty kernel
#

Like in Pokemon there are Nessa and Olivia that fit that pattern

#

But Aloe, Iris, Hupa, Burnet, and like 3 more that dont

#

Hapu

#

Which is ... not a rate I would consider a pattern

#

But everyone knows Nessa and Olivia

#

Most people dont remember Aloe, Burnet or Hapu

#

Probably because Nessa and Olivia are "waifubait", while the other 3 arent

wide ember
#

to me it was because Hapu looked more like a tanned Latina than the others, and I do agree that Aloe and Burnet are well designed

hasty kernel
#

I mean its unfair to say Nessa and Olivia arent well designed

wide ember
#

I can't really agree with Iris' dress in-game though after I saw all the fan comments about it

hasty kernel
#

Oh, what was the problem with Iris' dress?

sly stump
#

-- oh, lord, I just looked it up and I Do Not Like That

#

like, the big pink dress, not the shirt and pants?

#

she's prepubescent and she's got a V-neck down to her sternum and a thigh slit

hasty kernel
#

Oh I did not notice that

#

Yikes

sly stump
#

the shirt and pants are fine, but 😬

wide ember
#

also I did not say Nessa and Olivia aren't well designed, I'm still looking them up

#

Olivia looks okay, Nessa I need to wait to see what her character is like

hasty kernel
#

I think we get a little bit from her, she appears to be no-nonsense

#

Also there are way more dark-skinned characters in pokemon than I thought

#

Bit surprising given that its japan

north hamlet
#

They do have the gyaru subculture there

hasty kernel
#

Whatever that is

wide ember
#

the gyaru is a good point...

north hamlet
#

Where young women get tans and bleached hair and hang out in clubs and stuff

#

The idea of dark skin skimpy clothes being a strong association there isn't unfeasible

hasty kernel
#

I dont think any of Pokemons dark-skinned characters have bleached hair

wide ember
#

Japanese people are not uncommon in Hawaii and South America too, so that might also be why they are more aware

hasty kernel
#

Most of them were from the alola region which, being based on Hawai, is just mostly dark-skin in general

north hamlet
#

I also think the sportswear thing is a big contributor, but that's not much of an excuse for how silly japanese character design can be about women's clothing

sly stump
#

dragon, that's not what's going on, though -- the characters we're discussing are all clearly meant to be women of color, not "girls with a dark tan for style reasons"

hasty kernel
#

Oh yeah, did they keep the whole "choosing the skin tone of your player character" after Alola?

sly stump
#

& we already went over how the sportswear thing ... is its own problem

wide ember
#

Japan got the bodycon movement, that might be the thing with the clothing

hasty kernel
#

To be fair in that regard, there are quite a lot of shirtless male characters in Pokemon

wide ember
#

(strange enough there is a bodycon store in montreal)

hasty kernel
#

Which I know for reasons

sly stump
#

still ... not the same thing

wide ember
#

bodycon in japan was this body shape conscious way to design clothing, if my memory serves

#

which allowed the body to be covered but still showed the shape

hasty kernel
#

Not the same thing in what regard?

sly stump
#

Many of the shirtless men in pokémon aren't "waifubait", as you described several of the characters we've been discussing

#

Many of them are meant to be handsome, but they're not being sexualized in the same way the girls are.

hasty kernel
#

The ones Im thinking of definitely are

#

Which I also know for reasons

wide ember
#

you can't just look at fanworks and decide that the characters are intentionally sexualized, because if I google the crow smith demon person I will also see those kind of images

north hamlet
#

@sly stump my b if i misinterpreted, i was thinking that since there's not many foreigners in japan and that the subculture exists it would influence how they treat characters who are of colour

sly stump
#

(sol i'm not sure if you're talking to me or uno)

wide ember
#

uno

hasty kernel
#

Yeah thats true, but that goes both ways

sly stump
#

(👍)

hasty kernel
#

However, you can often infer

wide ember
#

but now that I am having flashbacks I might need to delete my message because I want to forget

sly stump
#

ahdsjklghfk

hasty kernel
#

Case in point

#

Tbh his earlier designs were more attractive

wide ember
#

that's kind of crossed the line and not sexy you mean

sly stump
#

... bruh

#

that's ... "male power fantasy" musculature

hasty kernel
#

Plenty of guys do find that attractive

#

And girls, but mostly guys

sly stump
#

anyway, I do feel we're getting off the original topic

wide ember
#

look we all have different taste in men or women I guess, and it's important to remember we might have friends that have similar taste

hasty kernel
#

Suppose we are

#

Anyway, after looking through the pokemon wiki and its awfully confusing structure

#

Pokemon is actually well balanced after the uh

#

Sinnoh region?

wide ember
#

I feel like we need to do a tally by combing through the named NPCs in each generation

sly stump
#

when you compare within Nintendo's girls -- not looking at its guys, just the girls -- the darker-skinned girls are consistently scantily-clad

UNO, you mentioned Hapu and Iris, and I think it's worth mentioning that they're both lighter-skinned than Marina, Nessa, Olivia, etc

#

Nessa, Olivia, and Marina's designs (and the Gerudo, and ... ) would all be fine in a vacuum, but they do represent a trend, not just in Nintendo games, but across media & worldwide, and it's something that Nintendo (one of the biggest video game producers worldwide) is absolutely aware of & has been criticized for

#

I don't think we need to reinvent the wheel on this by running stats

hasty kernel
#

Fair, they are

blissful charm
#

bird you're right and you should say it

hasty kernel
#

Here is the thing, from what I saw after looking through the wiki, Im not convinced thats a trend in terms of Nintendo making the characters (or more accurately, everything points against it) as much as its the trend of the public perception of characters

wide ember
#

look, you both sound reasonable, so I'll go grab something to eat before I pass out and do a tally

#

because I feel like Uno skipped a few character that do fit the pattern

hasty kernel
#

Did I?

#

I mustve missed them

wide ember
#

and I don't know if bird means the patterns as significant at 30%, 50% or 60%

hasty kernel
#

Were they regular trainers rather than professors/Gym Leaders/Elite Four?

wide ember
#

so once we have the numbers the math will speak

hasty kernel
#

Because those are the only ones I looked at

#

I never actually played Pokemon, for the record

wide ember
#

I will only tally the professors gym leaders elite four and recurrent named NPCs

#

or else I won't be able to sleep tonight and I have work tomorrow

#

I will also tally by groups of Latina looking, Tropics looking and African looking

chilly briar
#

Wait what

#

aren't you an adult uno

coarse siren
#

I've also never played Pokemon

#

Besides Mystery Dungeon

hasty kernel
#

Im not sure how that correlates to anything

#

But yes

#

Also that, yes

sly stump
#

fun story, I have never played a real pokémon game either, i'm 23

hasty kernel
#

I did play Mystery dungeon

chilly briar
#

y'all

coarse siren
#

I just don't care about pokemon

hasty kernel
#

Look Im a Digimon kid

coarse siren
#

Every time I see a Nintendo product period my eyes glaze over and I stare into the ceiling

chilly briar
#

I mean I was both

sly stump
#

i wasn't allowed to as a kid b/c cartoons and video games made me hyperactive and aggressive

hasty kernel
#

Thats was what I grew up with

#

And its what I stick to

wide ember
#

I was fan of both digimon and pokemon okay

coarse siren
#

I grew up playing Monkey Island

chilly briar
#

I didn't discriminate against 'mon

hasty kernel
#

And Digimon is still better than Pokemon dont @ me

#

Actually, Digimon, YGO and uh

coarse siren
#

I'm so tempted to @ you just to be contrary

tardy anchor
#

i wana play monkey island!!! it looks so good

chilly briar
#

bad post op

hasty kernel
#

Spectrobes

#

Spectrobes was my Pokemon substitute, I guess

#

And eventually Persona

tardy anchor
#

i grew up on educational pc games lolol

chilly briar
#

never have I ever heard of spectrobes

coarse siren
#

@tardy anchor Monkey Island is a great game series! The fourth one is not as good I think and the fifth one is by telltale which has a terrible end to the series, but it's a funny game series

chilly briar
#

@tardy anchor where in the world...

hasty kernel
#

Theyre not widely known unfortunately

#

But Spectrobes was amazing

chilly briar
#

is...

tardy anchor
#

ohooo!! i love point n clicks and funny stuff :3

coarse siren
#

I also played educational games, like a lot

hasty kernel
#

Its a game about digging up old fossils, reviving them, and then using them to beat aliens into submission

coarse siren
#

Look out! A three-headed monkey!

#

And Vegetarian cannibals

tardy anchor
#

WHOMSTVE remembers reader rabbit and jumpstart

coarse siren
#

who eat tofu

#

WAit

#

WAIT

tardy anchor
#

[waits]

coarse siren
#

Damn it

#

Reader Rabbit sounded

#

SO FAMILIAR

#

But it's not the game I thought it was

chilly briar
#

<waiteth>

#

jazz jack rabbit

coarse siren
#

No no I played an educational game

sly stump
#

JUMPSTART

tardy anchor
#

<waitens>

coarse siren
#

with a grey rabbit

#

and a lion

hasty kernel
#

These 2 dorks were the protagonists

tardy anchor
#

YAAAAAA JUMPSTART
MHM THATS THEM

sly stump
#

i used to go over to my best friend's house and play zoombinis with her

tardy anchor
#

omg zoombinis.....

coarse siren
#

I played DMC3 Special Edition

tardy anchor
#

AAAAA

sly stump
#

loved those lil dudes

tardy anchor
#

thank u

sly stump
#

i got too excited

hasty kernel
#

Its a shame that Spectrobes died after the third game

coarse siren
#

frick

hasty kernel
#

It was so good

tardy anchor
#

cussed for zoombinis 😔

coarse siren
#

Cussing over zoombinis... with a FRICK

sly stump
#

i remember zoombinis and i just go feral mode bc they're so Gosh Dang good

coarse siren
#

Wait no holy CRAP I did play Reader Rabbit oh my god

#

I just played the like, LATER games not the early ones

sly stump
#

i played uhhhh

#

PAJAMA SAM

#

on the library computers

coarse siren
#

CAR

chilly briar
#

<weighted>

coarse siren
#

The Car

sly stump
#

LOVED pajama sam

coarse siren
#

CAR

#

PUTT-PUTT

sly stump
#

CAR I KNOW THE CAR

chilly briar
#

son, the hedge

#

lol I know the car too

coarse siren
#

That took so long to remember

sly stump
#

pajama sam was my home but i was familiar with putt-putt

tardy anchor
#

PAJAMA SAM!!!

sly stump
#

-- that lion has intense 'evangelical children's cartoon' vibes and i don't like that

#

and i can't explain why

hasty kernel
#

I never played educational games

#

So I gotta say, this is wack

coarse siren
#

I loved math

#

The math games

sly stump
#

same

coarse siren
#

Because my dad was a maths teacher

#

I love my dad a lot

sly stump
#

math & logic puzzles ... hence Going Ham over zoombinis

#

aw that's great ari! same :D

#

my dad ... tried to teach me calculus when I was 11

#

it sort of worked

#

(it did not work)

hasty kernel
#

I didnt start playing video games til I was like 8

sly stump
#

but then when I did take calc in high school i was like ... 🤔 hang on ... i remember this

coarse siren
#

My dad taught me maths but he was tougher than the teachers at my school

hasty kernel
#

At that point I didnt need educational games anymore :S

coarse siren
#

So he would give me REALLY hard questions

hasty kernel
#

Actually no, I did play one

coarse siren
#

And I'd be like "please god help me"

hasty kernel
#

An old Disney game about a haunted house

#

Which you tried to escape by doing math

tardy anchor
#

aawww

coarse siren
#

I mean it helped me be good at maths! But it was horrifying

#

But then we moved to Canada and my maths teacher in school made me feel so bad I kept having breakdowns over maths and started hating maths

sly stump
#

D:

#

oh no ...

tardy anchor
#

my dad used to give me a sheet of 100 math probs to do on sundays and id be like OH CMOOON

hasty kernel
#

Oh 😦

tardy anchor
#

:((((

sly stump
#

i'm going to fistfight all bad teachers

hasty kernel
#

Its always a shame when people lose the joy of math

coarse siren
#

So at my high-school maths teacher: I hate you and the fact that you would go to your students and personally tell them to give up on their dreams because they were bad at maths

tardy anchor
#

:(((((

coarse siren
#

He actually did that btw

#

He would tell people to give up

hasty kernel
#

What a prick

coarse siren
#

He was a massive prick!

sly stump
#

WHAT

#

WHAT

hasty kernel
#

You dont even need math to succed either

sly stump
#

🔪‼

#

i'm going to eat him and claim his power for my own

hasty kernel
#

Unless you want to go into mathematics

coarse siren
#

Some kids would wanna go to uni to be like y'know engineers or w/e that needed maths

sly stump
#

i'm your teacher now

tardy anchor
#

DISGHOSTING

sly stump
#

and i support your dreams

coarse siren
#

I mean thank u but I'm in uni now,

sly stump
#

true but like in spirit

hasty kernel
#

Engineers, huh?

coarse siren
#

I appreciate it

tardy anchor
#

birds still on ur way 2 b ur teacher

coarse siren
#

Thank u bird

#

Be my enby parental teacher figure

hasty kernel
#

Yeah you do need a decent amount of math for that I guess

sly stump
#

HECK yeah 💪 🐦

#

oh also i was obsessed with this tree frog game on the Ranger Rick website. oh and there was a "food chain" one that i got (a) expert tier at and (b) played so much i got tendonitis at the age of like 8

OH and the uhhhhh ... god what was the name of that CYBERCHASE

#

YEAHHHHHHH

coarse siren
#

I remember that when I Came to canada I like ended up losing a lot of marks despite my answers being correct because like

#

I didn't do maths in

#

a "Neat" way???

sly stump
#

the cyberchase logic/math games

tardy anchor
#

CYBERCHASE
AAAAAAA RANGER RICK

hasty kernel
#

I looked at some of the assignments of people at my uni studying engineering

coarse siren
#

Also we were allowed to use calculators and I was so confused

hasty kernel
#

Ah, that

coarse siren
#

Prior to Canada I went to a school that didn't allow you to use calculators

sly stump
#

:T

hasty kernel
#

Its a good idea but teachers explain it horribly

tardy anchor
#

oh my god ranger rick. i had a collection of my neighbors old 80/90s magazines of it aaaaaaaa

hasty kernel
#

The idea is that in mathematics, the way to get to the result is more important than the actual result

coarse siren
#

Do any of y'all

#

Remember that like

#

French-Canadian sports anime

#

About galactic football or something

hasty kernel
#

For example, a friend of mine made a pretty bad rounding error in a math exam

sly stump
#

also god i feel u about answers being "neat". i used to lose so many points because i wouldn't show my work and it took me so long to be able to like ... extract my thought process

hasty kernel
#

Which meant the result was completely wrong

coarse siren
#

I would just skip steps because my dad taught me how to not like

hasty kernel
#

But since his process was correct at every step, he only lost 1 point

coarse siren
#

Waste time in maths

#

so I would do things that the teachers wouldn't understand

#

so I gave up trying to do things my dad's way [which was SMARTER]

because it didn't feel like "oh i'll do a, then b, then c" i would just go "oh so abc there we are!"

hasty kernel
#

Then again, until high school level maths it makes no sense

coarse siren
#

And I would constantly feel bad

hasty kernel
#

Even then it often makes no sense

#

When youre doing uni math tho?

coarse siren
#

They want you to do maths their way

hasty kernel
#

You definitely need the whole path

coarse siren
#

In HS it feels less like math teachers understand how to teach and more like

#

They want you to stick to a rigid path to figure it out

#

And that is the roadplan they left for you

hasty kernel
#

I had 2 HS math teachers

#

The first was nice

#

She helped the students that needed help, and let me doze off in class because I was bored as hell

#

The second one came in at the last semester (the first one went abroad I believe)

#

Had us 3 times

coarse siren
#

Also how the Gilbert do you like

#

Spell high-school

#

High school? Highschool? High-school?

hasty kernel
#

But decided to give new oral marks rather than just reuse the old ones

sly stump
#

one of the first two, i've never seen people hyphenate it

hasty kernel
#

And I had a bad day on 2/3

#

So he gave me an 8 instead of the regular 15 (15 is the best)

sly stump
#

technically I think it's "high school", space, but I see people write it as a compound word and it's fine

coarse siren
#

I remember my maths teacher would constantly be a jerk to me because my graphs "weren't clean"

hasty kernel
#

Which cost me a 2.0 average on my A-levels

And I'm like what do you MEAN you give me limited space and I have to like

#

hasty kernel
#

When I had to put in no effort and still get decent grades

coarse siren
#

I'm trying my best here!

sly stump
#

once I got to calc I was better about showing my work, partly because I'd learned in previous classes, and partly because ... you need that

#

and in calc you're more at the level of "oh and then i'll do [this named procedure] to the integral, and ... let's see if that works"

coarse siren
#

I love my uni more in terms of classes but

#

my uni is infamous

#

for having mostly jerks for maths professors

hasty kernel
#

Yeah, plus uni profs are more cool about how you do it

coarse siren
#

There's apparently a Russian maths professor who haaaaaates being asked questions

hasty kernel
#

In one exam I couldnt remember the proper way to do it

coarse siren
#

Every time people ask him a question he treats them like idiots

hasty kernel
#

So instead I basically reverse-engineered the way

sly stump
#

😬

#

god the state of academia is so bad

hasty kernel
#

Which ended up being a totally different procedure

coarse siren
#

And I had a maths professor who also hated explaining

chilly briar
#

I know no calc, which makes it pretty hard to deal with signals when programming embedded systems lol

hasty kernel
#

But it was correct, so he gave me full marks

#

Academia is very variable tbh

coarse siren
#

The only nice one I had was a dude who recently became a professor and he was doing a research with someone in Africa

hasty kernel
#

I lucked out, I had a pretty good TU within 2 hours of travel

coarse siren
#

So he would come to class late

#

Because he would be like "Africa, man."

hasty kernel
#

Then I lucked out further by getting the by far best math prof in the first 2 semesters

#

Dude was awesome, had the full lectures recorded online so if you had a bad day, you could stay at home

coarse siren
#

God bless professors who record online

hasty kernel
#

And his exams were challenging but fair

coarse siren
#

I had an organic chemistry professor who spoke at the speed of sound but he never recorded his lectures

#

Not because he didn't want to

hasty kernel
#

Though part of that was the fact that we could take anything with us to the exam

coarse siren
#

But because he was technologically inept

#

He's also like in his 30s? 40s? but he looks 25 years old

hasty kernel
#

Which is still weird to me, even though I get how it makes sense

coarse siren
#

Every time he came to class I'd always have a heart attack because I think he would be a student

hasty kernel
#

So most people just printed all assignments and solutions, plus the whole script

#

And brought a small encyclopedia to the exam

coarse siren
#

I need to go wash my face to try and stay awake a little longer

hasty kernel
#

I always wondered if thats unique to germany

coarse siren
#

Not sure, only uni I went to is in Canada

hasty kernel
#

Really our whole uni system is wack

coarse siren
#

And they don't allow dictionaries but they said if you don't understand a word NOT part of the course

#

For example, you cannot ask a TA or professor to be like

#

"I don't know what glycolysis means"

hasty kernel
#

Besides exams where you can bring anything, including cheat sheets

coarse siren
#

or "what is dehydrogenase again?"

hasty kernel
#

We also dont have a set course order

#

You can study all your courses in whatever order or arrangement yo uwant

coarse siren
#

God I wish that was me

hasty kernel
#

Granted its generally not advised to do Math III before Math I

#

But you could do that

coarse siren
#

Curse the establishment

#

Rebel against academia

hasty kernel
#

Meh, not much to rebel against really

#

Hm

#

How punk would it be to rebel against punk

coarse siren
#

It would be the punkiest punk

hasty kernel
#

Imagine a Punk Rock band doing a slow power-ballad

#

Thatd be pretty punk

sly stump
#

oh there's plenty to rebel against in academia

serene tulip
#

Particularly in the US

coarse siren
#

My bad take: Academia is great and I think academia being available is a good thing, but the barrier of entry to academia may be too much and the extreme competition in academia can be harmful to academia itself

#

Also academia really hard to explain to non-academia

sly stump
#

i spent most of my academic career in biology trying to convince my professors that "maybe we should listen to indigenous people about the environment" was a valid take

#

and i'm still bitter about it

coarse siren
#

My favourite thing about biology was my professor just filling our entire class with existential dread over climate change

hasty kernel
#

Let me rephrase that

#

Not much to rebel against at the academia of my university

coarse siren
#

That's fair

sly stump
#

"maybe, but that's not biology, i'm only interested in doing biology" like [shaking him by the throat] WESTERN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE IS FOUNDED ON RACISM AND WE CANNOT DO PROPER ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE UNLESS WE ADDRESS THAT

hasty kernel
#

For example our barrier of entry is about 280€ half a year

sly stump
#

sorry i've gone off on my spiel

#

but not sorry because i'm right

hasty kernel
#

And if you cant afford that, you get a loan from the government where oyu have to pay back only half of it

#

Unless you cant afford it

coarse siren
#

[Taps my microphone and says, through grit teeth] Racism

hasty kernel
#

Then you dont have to pay it back

#

Germany does do some things right

sly stump
#

sighs wistfully

coarse siren
#

Sometimes some countries surprise us

hasty kernel
#

Well tbh Germany is pretty good in a lot of matters nowadays

coarse siren
#

For example: Maybe forcing people who can't pay back their loan to pay back their loan is bad for us economically

hasty kernel
#

Even our "conservatives" are not that conservative

#

But there are still issues

wide ember
#

academia is only good science if it is willing to look at data

hasty kernel
#

Anyway, to sort of get back to the original point, Im really looking forward to more Nessa fanart

wide ember
#

I just had my salad marinated, working on rice and meat now

tardy anchor
#

oh yumm

#

what kind?

wide ember
#

there's thai rice and there's chinese black dragon river rice mix that I made yesterday that I will add some smoked cheese to

#

and as for meat I'll see if the beef is still fresh if not I'll recycle yesterday's shepherd pie meat by adding some zucchini

#

salad will be a daikon and artichoke and red pepper and some hot pepper salad

tardy anchor
#

ohhh yum!!! that sounds delicious

hasty kernel
#

Mmh, Shepherd's pie

#

Im a bit surprised how popular inferior cucumber is though

wide ember
#

I have a food intolerance for most cucumber that will make me bloat and run for the bathroom so I have no choice

#

everything cucumber I must replace with zucchini or avocado

hasty kernel
#

Oh

#

That sucks

wide ember
#

also, you can't really BBQ cucumber but you can BBQ zucchini, so there's also that

hasty kernel
#

Why BBQ something that isnt meat

wide ember
#

still can't replace the crunchy goodness of a cucumber salad but it's also good

#

it's just nice? especially if it's the korean style BBQ

hasty kernel
#

Cucumber Egg and Raddish Salad

#

Its so good

wide ember
#

with the north american BBQ with the grill that I have in the yard it's rather difficult to grill vegetables but flat surface plus korean sauce... yum

hasty kernel
#

wide ember
#

don't forget cucumber sandwich

hasty kernel
#

Also wait

#

No pickles either?

wide ember
#

oh my gosh that's why I also suffer that after eating pickles

#

thanks, I totally forget when I eat stuff with pickles and that explains a lot

hasty kernel
#

Truly, the world is not fair

#

That some people are denied the heavenly taste of pickles

tropic garden
#

you can pickle anything 🤔

hasty kernel
#

True

#

Pickled Ginger is good

wide ember
#

I can only not eat pickles if it's cucumber, right now I'm doing a super fast version of pickled daikon, that's what is marinating right now

#

I should also marinate the beef soon, after I'm done with cutting these zucchini

tropic garden
#

oh sweet pickled daikon good

#

pickled ginger really is where it's at tho

wide ember
#

I poured so much salt and sugar in it

#

I had this salt pickled sakura blossom in a dessert once, that was also surprisingly nice

#

it was placed atop a coconut cream, which is atop a yuzu base

hasty kernel
#

Hm

#

Yknow what

#

Maybe Ill have Cucumber and Egg Salad tomorrow

#

Oh hey, its 5 am again

#

I should sleep

tropic garden
#

yuzuuuu

#

i had yuzu-cha for the first time about a month ago and it was delightful

wide ember
#

the korean version or the japanese version?

#

korean yuzu cha is supposed to be yuzu slices marinated in honey (most cheaper ones use sugar and syrup instead though) and japanese yuzu cha is dried yuzu peel (the zest part)

tropic garden
#

japanese

#

at least i assume it was japanese since i live in japan dfkjgfdg

wide ember
#

you can still buy the korean version in japan

tropic garden
#

yeah i had it at a like

#

onsen restaurant though

wide ember
#

so if it's from dried it's the japanese one, I know where to get it where I live but I was not sure

tropic garden
#

i didn't buy it at the store so idk if it was marinated or dried

#

it was quite sweet though so maybe it was the korean kind??

wide ember
#

the japanese one can also have honey added after it is brewed from the dried one so...

tropic garden
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

it was tasty, whatever it was

wide ember
#

we'll never know until you go back there and report to us

#

I'll note that and try that in a new game, my old character is kind of stuck

hexed hollow
#

that too

wide ember
#

ok, regarding the pokemon NPC tally, I've checked every gym leader, elite four, champion, professors, rivals, battle institute (maison, chateau, arcade, tree, etc.)

#

the result is that 4 out of the 9 female PoC of at least Latina or Mediterranean level of dark skin recurrent named NPCs are dressed in a way that is not politically correct

#

so both uno and bird had a good point, in the sense that it is true that the majority (by one point) are dressed in a way that is not stereotypical looks like a woman can wear in real life in her way to an office work, but there is still a pattern of them showing skin in a way that might be stereotypical (near 50%)

#

I was not sure about Olympia though because she seemed like Asian (not Eastern Asian but like Sri Lanka or something), so the total number could be 4 out of 10

#

the list used: Phoebe, Lenora, Iris, Olivia, Fiona, Burnet, Dahlia, Hapu, Nessa (+Olympia)

#

now that I've kept my word I can go to sleep for like 4 hours

#

Also my opinion is that this ratio is better than expected but still not healthy yet so the Pokémon company better continue the push for even better representation

north hamlet
#

thank you kindly for taking the time to find data

#

that's very little sleep though i am mildly concerned

coarse siren
#

That very little sleep is a mood

#

Which is a bad thing to say but what a mood

hasty kernel
#

Hold on, where do you get 4?

#

I did miss Phoebe, but thats Her, Olivia and Nessa

#

Or do we count Iris because of her second outfit

wide ember
#

I did count iris because of her champion outfit, even though her gym leader outfit is nice

#

Because champion outfit is the most recent one

hasty kernel
#

I guess thats kinda fair, though I wouldnt put it on the level of Olivia or Nessa either

#

Maybe count both designs as one

#

If there's one thing, I rebound off of the bad quickly. Sure, the scars'll be there for the rest of my life up in my cranium...but sometimes it's best to just pick yourself up and move on.

#

It's better to let the past flow under the bridge than to go and catch it.

#

I'd cheekily wax lyrical about it, but I'm sure the point's made. Better to wait and see things than to rush after it like a lost dream.

copper lark
#

are you a writer

#

bc. you have such a way w words my 1 brain cell can’t handle it

kindred delta
#

I am one, yeah.

#

Though I'm nothing like the greats or others beyond me.

#

I might have a way with words, but I've got a sore mouth and I speak like a sailor sometimes.

#

Only thing I'm good at is lorebuilding / lore bible making.

#

I can't do dialogue worth a rat's arse.

#

Even then, I'm not perfect. I can improve, yes, but I manage it over time. Wordplay alone takes time to master, especially when you've been mostly around people who spit pejoratives faster than a one legged man in a footrace.

north hamlet
#

Mmm lorebuilding

kindred delta

Lorebuilding is fun.

When I'm not doing pre-existing IPs.

north hamlet

Just mash 2 somewhat compatible IPs together and see if it works

north hamlet

hasty kernel
#

For the record, Soul Eater x Digimon is actually amazing and I wish I ended up doing the comic I had planned

kindred delta
#

Oh goodness, the last time I did a fanfiction lore-expansion was with RWBY.

It did not end well. [yikes.gif]

#

Before that, Persona.

#

And even before that my own take on Mega Man.

#

Never wrote a single thing other than nearly 300 pages of notes alone for the Mega Man one.

#

The Mega Man one is one that, unfortunately, I've lost the notes to.

#

One of those unrecoverable hard-drive crashes yanno?

north hamlet
#

🇫

#

I should probably set up an online backup....

kindred delta
#

I've been doing that.

#

But honestly, my lore for the current thing I'd like to do is simply limited to it.

#

Now if we talk about the scope beyond it?

#

is scared to look at the nearly gargantuan-sized document.

#

one part of a bigger mythos

#

one piece to a much larger puzzle that even I'm scared to unbottle and let loose.

sly stump
#

fanfic expansion is my lifeblood, honestly

#

me and @autumn pasture have the outline for what could be a, like, 300k eight scribes prequel for Pyre

kindred delta
#

The Persona one was interesting because I also had to work with Raidou Kuzunoha and Shin Megami Tensei ...if as part of it.

sly stump
#

before that (and what i've been revisiting in the past few days) it was Fallout 4, and before that it was Dragon Age ...

#

ooh, fun!

kindred delta
#

Also allowed me to work with not only the main games, but also the side material.

#

Which meant I could use the Persona 1 manga as a basis for the story and include Persona 1's US version as a nod or direct use in the mythos I wrote.

#

It was written before Persona 5 had officially released, but I updated it once I had finished playing the game.

#

Had a lot of alterations, but stuff that I thought about with the mindset of being a writer in the company that they would make.

#

But all in all, it was difficult to write in how Persona 3 Portable's FeMC would've been in-universe.

#

So I wrote her in a manner inspired by a Persona fanfiction that I enjoyed.

#

Memento Umbrae was its name.

#

Though I don't like doing fanfiction anymore.

#

It's not because I want to, but more like I tend to take ideas and convert 'em into original stories.

#

Rather than tell them in a series I loved.

#

It's an odd feeling I have.

#

That desire to do something, but ultimately find it best to do an original story.

#

What really got me into lorebuilding was a combination of Final Fantasy XII, Dark Souls and my love of Zelda.

#

But I think it started with FFXIV in full bloom.

#

XIV just has a lot of lore if you dig around in the game.

autumn pasture
#

yeah, i have a similar instinct for turning fanfic into original ideas

#

i wouldn't call our scribes stuff an outline tbh

#

we've got a few key points but a lot of it is backstory and the gay stuff(tm)

kindred delta
#

I approach a story not unlike Yoko Taro.

#

I write the beginning and end first.

#

Worry about the middle as it goes

#

give myself a start and ending

#

I have an idea of how I want a story to go and, visually, it's there.

#

Sometimes, I get frustrated at writing an outline.

#

In that frustration, I do what every sane man does.

#

Take a step back.

#

Let myself focus on something else.

#

But creativity never stops, I admit.

#

It's like fighting a hellbeast from the darkest depths of Tartarus. Sometimes it just doesn't feel like dying for a moment. Call it a curse of an overactive imagination.

#

I think that's why I find myself in allure of video games.

Man, sometimes I do this really awful thing to myself and actually look at YouTube comments. I was looking at a few channels that did reviews for some games I like, and their comment sections were just so harsh. I can't imagine getting criticism from gamers, nor can I imagine being faithful to my own creativity with such harsh words tossed about. In my job, I'm surrounded by people who give critique and provide me a culture to improve, and sure, clients can be rough, but it's so different than reception from a wide general audience. I think it'd be really hard to put yourself out there, and get such a wide and varied reaction to your work.

It helps if you take some time to consider that the person typing the hate comment has nothing better to do than flame people over the internet while reading them😜

coarse citrus
#

I guess. But I don't want to invalidate the opinion of someone simply because their message is spiteful or entitled. I see things like 'this game could have been great IF' and 'this studio spends too much time on THIS' and it's just a mess. At a certain point, I guess, the creative has to just pull back... and focus on what they want in their game? I guess that's what I do in my job as well. Must be a balancing act, to fit the needs of your coworkers, your consumers, and your own desires. Still, I think I lack a skill of tuning out criticism. It sounds exhausting.

analog spear
#

I wouldn't necessarily classify those as spiteful but I see what you mean

#

Most of that kind of feedback comes from when a game tries to be too much at once

hasty kernel
#

Or when the direction isnt what people expected

analog spear
#

or the trailers promised

#

battleborn

coarse citrus
#

I'd say they're spiteful when the language is such, regardless of intent

analog spear
#

was going off of this game could have been great IF

coarse citrus
#

Battleborn was so sad.

analog spear
#

rip

#

never even got the chance to try it

sharp grail
#

what happened w it?

analog spear
#

wish I did

#

it died very fast after launch

sharp grail
#

i know it came out at the same time ovw did so it was massively overshadowed by it

analog spear
#

then it went ftp

velvet fjord
#

battleborn tried to compete with overwatch instead of being its own thing

sharp grail
#

yeah i remember that but how much different than the trailers was it?

analog spear
#

yea it was basically a smite style moba

#

but it marked itself as a fast ttk ow type shooter

velvet fjord
#

plus randy pitchford being randy pitchford in an attempt to spark popularity didn't help

analog spear
#

who?

coarse citrus
#

I could talk for hours about why battle born failed.

hasty kernel
#

Shame really, it had fun characters and gameplay

analog spear
#

^

#

I was moderately into smite at one point and the game seemed to have fixed many of my issurs

#

plus single player

sharp grail
#

the ppl who made smite also made paladins, right

#

which was also an Overwatch Attempt

analog spear
#

yea

sharp grail
#

i enjoyed my time with paladins, but it definitely didnt feel as polished

analog spear
#

I dislike paladins for its inconsistency

sharp grail
#

and then i discovered that until level 5, the game puts you against bots, but it doesnt tell you that

#

and then i realized i suck and stopped playing. lol

#

i did amass a good amount of skins from giveaways tho

velvet fjord
#

paladins was clearly a deliberate attempt to be the poor man's overwatch
I say this as someone who played both

sharp grail
#

ye i also played both

#

overwatch is the one game i preordered other than pyre

velvet fjord
#

I didn't hate paladins, it had some fun characters (maeve and the blind lady) but overwatch is just so much more polished

hasty kernel
#

It used to be very different

#

But it was overwatch-i-fied

#

Then again I actually enjoyed it more than overwatch

sharp grail
#

i stopped playing before maeve

hasty kernel
#

The character design felt better

sharp grail
#

or maybe just around, idk

hasty kernel
#

Gameplay-wise

velvet fjord
#

another not-quite-overwatch I really liked was dirty bomb
shame that game got abandoned, I really enjoyed its movement

sharp grail
#

it has some cool designs yeah

#

i like the lady made of stone and evie

hasty kernel
#

And now I have to bring up the best game that died an untimely death in that sort of genre

kindred delta
#

I cannot bring myself to give a proper opinion on Overwatch now. I liked it at first, but something felt wrong about the game once it had passed a year in age.

Something about the game really made me felt let down?

hasty kernel
#

Gigantic

#

God I miss Gigantic

kindred delta
#

But it's the pre-2018 Overwatch Lore I was most interested in. Back when it was still an MMO in concept.

analog spear
#

like the whole point system is dumb. both teams have a fight on even terms, and the winner caps the point and receives one score point. then a payload spawns, and the team who won the first point can push the payload into the enemy spawn, where they have an extreme respawn disadvantage, for one more point. the stupid part is that if the defending team (who has a massive respawn advantage due to the final point being right in front of their spawn while the attackers need to run from the literal farthest corner of the map) defends the payload from reaching their spawn, THEY GET A SCORE POINT. this means that if two teams are evenly matched, literally the only round that matters is the fourth and final, because they will each get one point for all prior rounds

#

paladins^

sharp grail
#

i stopped playing overwatch when i realized it was literally making me miserable bc i stopped enjoying it and only grinded for skins, because i was only invested in the characters and not the gameplay

kindred delta
#

I stopped playing after Doomfist came.

velvet fjord
#

I know what you mean Seafra

I don't play it anymore except for events, but the story has made no progress in 3 years except for removing story elements

hasty kernel
#

Like, I could ramble about Gigantic for days

#

The designs and aesthetic were great, the gameplay the best in its (sort of) genre

kindred delta
#

I also don't trust Blizz anymore.

sharp grail
#

i still feel this sort of dread and anxiety when i think about reinstalling battlenet... idk why

kindred delta
#

Blizzard gives me the hibbity jibbities now.

#

And not in a good way.

analog spear
#

activison pls leave

hasty kernel
#

Look at her

#

She is great

sharp grail
#

oh wait, now i remember

kindred delta
#

Honestly speaking, I do like the art direction for OW.

#

Mostly because I know the guy who did the art for the initial release.

#

not personally but I knew of their work.

sharp grail
#

yeah gigantic had cool character designs. what happened to it?

hasty kernel
#

Thats a long story

#

So

#

They ran into trouble with funding

#

So they got a Microsoft contract, became exclusive to the Windows 10 store, yadda yadda

#

It was fine, but the playerbase was small, and funding was starting to dry up

#

So then they got a contract with Perfect World

#

Things went fine for a while, but it was still too small and players slowly started leaving

#

Until eventually PW shut it down

#

Its main failure was mismanagement

sharp grail
#

i see... its a shame

hasty kernel
#

It was locked out from too many people at first, and advertising was largely a miss

#

It is

kindred delta
#

quite a shame indeed

hasty kernel
#

Its the only game I ever cared enough to try really hard

kindred delta
#

Honestly that's been a bit of a scary thought on my part is what I'd go with on art direction for my project when the time comes.

I don't like a whole lot of styles that've popped up over the last few years. But there's merit in me saying that Japanese art has taken my fancy.

hasty kernel
#

Got into the top 300 of players worldwide

sharp grail
#

speaking of game tragedies

#

i think this game whos kickstarter ive been following isnt gonna make it and im sad :<

kindred delta
#

it's what happens

velvet fjord
#

which game?

sharp grail
#

afterlight

kindred delta
#

if it's Barkley 2--nvm

sharp grail
#

it has 80 minutes left and quite a ways to go

hasty kernel
#

In fact, I mainly got into the top 300 on the back of this guy

velvet fjord
#

I think I might have heard of that? or maybe it was another one with a similar name

hasty kernel
#

Ramsay

#

Tol brooklyn dork

#

God I still can hear his voicelines

kindred delta
#

Actually thinking about it, there was one art-style I'd like to draw inspiration from. At least in the concept alone

hasty kernel
#

Oh yeah I recall, the game you posted here

kindred delta
#

Even if I don't plan to be the main artist since I'm not one anymore.

hasty kernel
#

80 minutes left, and a couple thousand to go

#

Thats not good

sharp grail
#

yeah i just hope it still gets made, even if over the course of a longer time

kindred delta
#

I hope it does get finished in some capacity.

#

That's always been a hope of mine is to see people never give up on projects, despite not reaching a milestone or goal.

sharp grail
#

maybe they could try a kickstarter again but with more publicity? i feel like it just didnt reach enough people

#

idk how this stuff works tho

kindred delta
#

I've always been the person who feels like something shouldn't release or be put out to pasture early.

I'm much more preferring the "when it's done™" approach to things.

sharp grail
#

i usually dont hear about games again if the kickstarter didnt make it

#

oh for sure

kindred delta
#

I feel like that's the lesson people ought to learn when it comes to game development.

#

These things take time.

hasty kernel
#

Trying to kickstarter again is a bad idea

kindred delta
#

But it's also another perspective to keep in mind that it goes beyond time.

#

It's about passion and other feelings.

north hamlet
#

Making things is often harder than it looks, and the decisions you make can have many results

kindred delta
#

that^

#

I don't expect perfection.

#

Projects take many roads.

#

https://twitter.com/granbluefantasy/status/1113365573600051201 also this game's promotional and in-game art is fantastic and has been the onus of my vision for my project.

Though I may never reach this as the direct, it has been there for me to use as a springboard to imagine the world in some manner.
