#

Perhaps not

limber horizon
#

corporations aren't systems to be reformed!!!!! you can't make meaningful change to a corporation if they see more longterm benefit in abusing your rights, unlike a governing system or nation

hasty kernel
#

Uh

#

"unlike a governing system or nation"?

#

Because I can think of plenty of systems or nations that also make it impossible

#

Then again, I have family in russia, so my view is influenced by that

limber horizon
#

that's????? what revolution is????

hasty kernel
#

When was the last time a revolution worked

limber horizon
#

EVERYTIME A DICTATORSHIP FALLS?????

jade elk
#

when was the last time a dictatorship fell

hasty kernel
#

Ignoring for a second that they usually get replaced by a worse one

limber horizon
#

wow! you're gross!

hasty kernel
#

When was the last time a dictatorship fell without a global power being heavily involved?

upbeat scroll
#

The global powers are the ones that usually make things worse

limber horizon
#

^

hasty kernel
#

Yeah, thats true

#

Theyre also the reason the revolutions work

#

Because unfortunately

#

Weapons suck

honest glade
#

I wish I could empathize with those who have all sorts of issues with Epic and what they allegedly do or don't get up to... but since I don't use a niche OS and I tend to be content as long as I'm not hindered from consuming whatever I wish to consume in any way... I dunno. I always end up shrugging at this sort of news/these sorts of revelations.

hasty kernel
#

And weapons made revolutions a lot less possible

#

Scrappy weapons can handle bayonetts that have no accuracy and reload slowly

#

They cant handle tanks and bombers

#

Mind you, I wish revolutions would work

#

Lord knows Russia has been in need of one for uh

#

20 years?

#

Anyway, this metaphor has gone really out of hand

#

The point is

limber horizon
#

promoting, developing, and pushing foss software is the way to promote change in proprietary software and abusive systems

the rise of linux in the enterprise is the reason that microsoft was forced to support linux under enterprise and had to call defeat on trying to monopolize the global server market

upbeat scroll
#

It's convenient for him to argue for people keeping windows

hasty kernel
#

Well, getting into this would be a lot more complex and time-consuming than Im willing to do

#

But it really isnt that easy

jade elk
#

nah i agree on that point

upbeat scroll
#

Sweeney's point?

jade elk
#

no

hasty kernel
#

I mean the biggest problem is that even if you could solve every gaming-related problem Linux has

#

Windows would still be infinitely bigger

upbeat scroll
#

So?

hasty kernel
#

So you wouldnt be forcing windows to make changes

#

Linux is inherently a niche market

#

And its never going to stop being a niche market

#

It would require every PC-related industry to simulatinously heavily push Linux products

#

And for Linux to become a lot easier to use

#

And even then Im not sure it would grow to rival Windows

limber horizon
#

the rise of browsers such as firefox and them fighting for users rights forced microsoft to stop anti-competition practices with IE

#

it doesn't always have to be the complete set like linux

#

even progressing bits of an os that are open and free and ethical

#

like itch, which is incredibly friendly with open source, or firefox, or openvr over oculus, helps mitigate corporate abuse in tech

hasty kernel
#

Id argue the anti-trust case they lost in the US did more to stop them than Firefox did

#

Even if they scaled back the punishment in the end

#

Cowards

#

Though I suppose Firefox did accelerate the process later on

#

Actually hold on

#

Isnt Chrome bigger than Firefox?

jade elk
#

*shrugs* i use firefox

hasty kernel
#

Anyway, the solution to this isnt to push Linux, because it plain and simple aint gonna work

#

And at this point I cant foresee any real competitor to windows appearing

#

The solution is for the government(s) to step in and tell Windows to back off when they pull rubbish like that

#

Although

#

Android has actually done a lot to mess with Windows as well I suppose

#

And even it, supplanting Windows in terms of marketshare, has failed to have the desired effect

upbeat scroll
#

Governments will not touch Microsoft I think

#

At least, the US government wont

#

Lobbying too stronk

hasty kernel
#

They did before

#

Cut down on the punishment, of course

#

But they did

#

Also @limber horizon where did you hear that those plans were halted?

limber horizon
hasty kernel
#

Huh

#

Nothing confirmed, but I dont think that guy is uncredible?

#

Bit odd though, last we heard of it everything was under heavy NDA

#

Regardless, for Epic Games to cancel that development 7 months after acquiring EAC is just highly unlikely

#

I imagine talks just broke down

#

Also I dont know why you keep saying "EGS will never have a linux launcher" when the literally only thing theyve said is "its not currently planned"

upbeat scroll
#

Usually when something isn't currently planned, they say that they're looking into it

hasty kernel
#

Eh, thats too much commital

upbeat scroll
#

Not currently planned means that they don't care, but they don't want people to know they don't care

hasty kernel
#

Thats what you say when youre already working on it, but not sure its going to work out

#

When something isnt currently planned, they say exactly that

#

Its not a no, but its also not commital

#

Also, @limber horizon I would rather appreciate it if you did not take pictures of what I write and post it elsewhere

#

And by that I mean, take it down, its against the ToS anyway

faint panther
#

Helloooo

cedar rock
#

Hey kimo!!!

somber ferry
#

how do you do, fellow kids

hasty kernel
#

Surely everyone here is too old to be considered kids

#

Or perhaps being a kid isnt an age thing but a state of mind

upbeat scroll
#

i wouldnt be surprised if we had some minors around here

#

it is a gamer discord after all

hasty kernel
#

True

#

Plus otherwise the automated filter would be pointless

upbeat scroll
#

Bastion is rated E10+

#

and so is pyre, apparently

#

transistor is rated teen?

somber ferry
#

iโ€™m 24 but i look like iโ€™m in high school

#

does that count lol

hasty kernel
#

How old I like depends on my facial hair

#

If Im shaven I look like a middle schooler

#

If Ive got a beard I look like I could be anywhere in the twenties spectrum

somber ferry
#

iโ€™ve just been cursed with baby face

#

iโ€™m actually baby

hasty kernel
#

I mean, a lot of people go to great lengths for eternal youth

upbeat scroll
#

yeah you gotta watch out for those people if you're baby face

hasty kernel
#

I was more thinking along the lines of "youre ahead of the curve"

upbeat scroll
#

watch your back, great lengths could be dangerous for you

ionic viper
#

i'm 24 but regularly get id'd for stuff as if i'm under 16

hasty kernel
#

My personal attitude towards marathons summarized in one sentence

somber ferry
#

oh same @ionic viper

hasty kernel
#

Well, Im not sure if I would be id'd tbh

#

Ive never bought anything that requires ID

lusty ridge
#

Looking younger than you are limesFeels

hasty kernel
#

I feel like the opposite is worse

lusty ridge
#

I mean it's better up to a point. Also usually depends on the person and how they feel. Societally we generally feel it is better for men to appear older and more mature, and women to appear younger. It is just ingrained into our culture I guess.

blissful charm
#

when i was 25 there were multiple times i was mistaken for being under 12

hasty kernel
#

Oh yeah I totally missed that angle tbh

#

Kind of really unfair

lusty ridge
#

I mean I was happy once I stopped getting offered the kids menu at places despite being like 17.

hasty kernel
#

"Oh you can be considered good looking no matter your age if youre a guy, but if youre a girl and looker older than 30 years, good luck"

lusty ridge
#

It doesn't matter much to me now since I will get ID'd when I purchase alcohol regardless of my appearance as long as I look under 30 or so.

blissful charm
#

it is very frustrating to be mistaken for a child bc people really talk down to you

hasty kernel
#

I mean

lusty ridge
#

Yeah babs, I just look grumpy all the time and I manage to avoid it.

hasty kernel
#

Im pretty sure people talk down on short people

#

Actually Im not sure

#

Maybe thats just me having a complex about being short

lusty ridge
#

I don't really experience that, except in the most literal sense limesGiggle

hasty kernel
#

The most literal sense is definitely bad enough

#

Which is why when I take over the world, I will have some kind of levitation suit built for me so I can smugly hover over everyone

lusty ridge
#

I mean if they are 6'3'' how can they talk to my 5'6'' butt if they don't slightly angle their head downwards.

#

That is a big brain idea owen lionGalaxy

blissful charm
#

one time i was on a plane and the flight attendant asked what i wanted to drink, and i was like "water please" and she adopted this high voice and said "such good manners!"

hasty kernel
#

Yikes

#

Also the alternative was kneecapping everyone

#

But that felt a bit too cruel

lusty ridge
#

That's awful babs limesFeels

tardy anchor

oh no babs jhgjhgk

blissful charm

i think i was like 23 at the time too it was so bad

Damn thats even older than I am right now

blissful charm
#

ah, wee babe

north hamlet
#

not sure if this makes me feel young or old

ionic viper
#

i've lost count of how many times i've opened the door to a salesperson and their first reaction has been "is your mum or dad home"

blissful charm
#

rip

#

@north hamlet how old are you?

hasty kernel
#

Speaking of awkward experiences

#

I travel to uni via a city I went to grade school in

lusty ridge
#

He is 65 years old. Makes him feel like he is only 55 again

hasty kernel
#

And I had people walk up to me a couple of times and talking to me like they know me

#

And I was just standing there trying to figure out who they were

north hamlet
#

@blissful charm younger than you but older than some of the people here

hasty kernel
#

(Ive got prosopagnosia so I dont recognize faces)

#

Thats always fun

#

I still dont know how to react because asking "excuse me, who are you" just sounds so rude

lusty ridge
#

My friends and I were having a discussion about that relatively recently actually Owen. What do you use to try and recognize people? Voices, clothing choices, shoes, etc?

hasty kernel
#

Yup

#

Clothing style, hair-style

#

Glasses and other such accessories

#

Individual details like moles, freckles and the like

#

And voices

#

Its why I had a great deal of difficulty in school

#

Because almost all of the girls had clothing and hairstyles I couldnt distinguish at all

#

And only a couple had any details to go by

#

With the guys it was a little easier

lusty ridge
#

Good to know, I appreciate the answer

hasty kernel
#

Np

#

Keep in mind

#

Its a bit different for others

tardy anchor
#

really? how do guys styles differ? ๐Ÿค”

hasty kernel
#

Everyone has their own way of dealing with it

#

Well in the case of guys, the height differences were a lot more noticable which helped

lusty ridge
#

Might just be knowing/interacting with guys more leads you better distinguishing of styles.

hasty kernel
#

But there were generally 8 different hairstyles among guys

#

Whereas girls had 5

#

Plus guys had no sense of fashion, so everyone had their own unique mess

#

Well, not everyone

#

There were still like 30% that blended together

#

But yeah, its no coencidence the people I hung out with the most were the tallest guy in the school, the guy with a really noticable mole on his right cheek, the guy who had big square glasses and the guy whose neck was incredibly tall

ionic viper
#

that sounds like an awkward conversation to have. "why am i friends with you? well, i can't tell anybody else apart from each other."

hasty kernel
#

Oh fun fact

#

I didnt actually know I had it back then

#

Or more accurately, I thought it was normal

#

I thought noone could recognize faces

#

It was just a subconcious thing

serene tulip
#

then square glasses guy decided he wanted to try oval glasses

#

and you forgot him forever

chilly briar

iโ€™m 24 but i look like iโ€™m in high school
@somber ferry that's a mood

somber ferry
#

iโ€™m baby

chilly briar
#

how do you do, fellow kids?

serene tulip
#

That was probably the case for me when I was 24 too

#

but I feel like I look much closer to 30 now

#

but I'm not sure if that's actually true or just me being low self esteem'd

hasty kernel
#

Ok you joke but

chilly briar
#

yes

hasty kernel
#

Something like thats happened before

#

Twice, in fact

#

One time a guy switched from a long, messy hairstyle to a really short spikey one

#

Legit didnt recognize him

chilly briar
#

Did he recently star in a paramount pictures movie trailer?

hasty kernel
#

Less Sonic more Larry Butz

serene tulip
#

Once, in elementary school I didn't recognize my mom because she was wearing a hat

#

that was an awkward day for me

chilly briar
#

...b...but how??? Was it like a whole head covering hat?? Was it a teemo hat??? Is your mum teemo??

serene tulip
#

I think it was a baseball cap?

#

and she just never had worn one in my presence before

hasty kernel
#

Are you sure it wasnt just a paper mask?

lusty ridge
#

Are you sure it was your mom?

#

And not someone in a hat.

chilly briar
#

Are you just sure?

hasty kernel
#

Im just saying, maybe his mom is a spy

serene tulip
#

honestly at this point you're going to have to ask 3rd grade me

#

30 yo me doesn't know anymore

chilly briar
#

how old is one in third grade

lusty ridge
#

9

#

8-9 I guess. In some countries a year younger. In Greece I think you would be 7-8, since their grades start a year earlier.

as convenient as it is to have my games ~in the cloud~ downloading these massive things rather than installing from disks is just. so painful

serene tulip

I wish they had made torchlight 3 instead of Hob

rain mortar
#

Not gonna lie, I really liked Hob

tropic garden

aw, hob looks cool

It is! It's a super gorgeous game

Hob is really pretty

tropic garden

I have a ton of games unplayed on Steam, plus a ton more on Humble

tropic garden

oh right i have tacoma waiting for me

somewhere

serene tulip
#

I haven't played 63 games in my steam library

#

But I think some of that is wonky because some games came with different versions and stuff that I never played

tropic garden

I played like four new games over the past month or so while waiting out the hiades

chilly briar

torchlight tho โฃ

serene tulip

like, Played PUBG, but not PUBG Experimental

didn't even know I owned that

riven good

riven hard!!! riven good.

Mine is too, I just set it unprivate for like, 10 minutes

tropic garden

i recommend riven if you're in the mood to wander around for two hours until you have a sudden epiphany about how the puzzle you're stuck on works

serene tulip
#

Did you play Obduction?

tropic garden
#

i did!

serene tulip
#

I was really proud I managed to solve that one all on my own

#

The only other one I didn't get a lot of help on was Uru, because of the dumb firefly puzzle

tropic garden
#

yeah, though after riven the number puzzle was kinda disappointing like, you guys just wanted to make a fun counting system again and had nothing to do with it, didnt you

#

GODDDD

rain mortar

There's a link you can click on that page to make your games public

tropic garden

i knew the puzzle design was pretty bad so ngl i just defaulted to guides as soon as i got even a little stuck

i figured it wasn't worth it

serene tulip

Why, did you spend entirely too much time on uru online roleplaying a DRC employee?

#

Not that I did or anything <.<

tropic garden

i did not that was way before my time hahaha

#

i only got into myst stuff a year or so ago

tropic garden

like....that book should've been at least two books to begin with anyways

hey you know what i love, bot's weird obsession with naming every single npc that wanders in

Oh, apparently there is an audiobook of the book of atrus

tropic garden

oh that figures

serene tulip

just iddn't make it onto audible apparently

it gets all the love for being a like...actual story and not an encyclopedia

they changed the transcription standards for d'ni, yadda yadda

serene tulip

dang it

it's spelled the same in d'ni.

yeah

rain mortar

By the accepted definition(s) yes

serene tulip

def identify more with millenial than genx

rain mortar

I think millennial is more a mindset than an actual age

serene tulip

lol

#

so that's why we get blamed for everything

rain mortar
#

I don't ever identify myself with any "gen <insertcatchphrase>"

serene tulip
#

Thats such a millenial thing to say

tropic garden

in japan everyone just calls me....young

rain mortar

I'll have you know that I don't care for avocado toast, so clearly I'm not a millennial Kappa

tropic garden

big difference between american and japanese elementary schoolers

i wonder if there are rips of those casettes floating around

rain mortar

I mean, probably?

tropic garden

probably squint

i want to find it just to hear a human person have to pronounce "yf'jerrej"

The internet is a many-splendored beast, depending on your scruples

serene tulip

a cursory TPB search didn't show anything

chilly briar

@tropic garden I just read it how i'd read Norwegian

serene tulip
#

The current audiobook I'm listening too seems to have a lot of proper nouns with apostrophes

#

its interesting

tropic garden
#

p sure those j's are [zh]

#

it's a vowel y for sure tho

serene tulip
#

oh , nevermind apparently the narrator just pronounces stuff like there are a dozen apostrophes

tropic garden
#

hahhhahaha

serene tulip
#

"Radchaai" not Ra'ch'ai

tropic garden
#

i know a coffeeshop where you can get some radchaai

serene tulip

oh god

I should make some chai

tropic garden

chai is love, chai is life

serene tulip

Do you like it sweeter or more spiced?

tropic garden

spiced ๐Ÿ˜‹

serene tulip

I enjoy Tipu's Authentic Indian Chai

tropic garden
#

hoo...is that american?

#

as in can i buy it in america

serene tulip
#

I get it in america

tropic garden
#

sweet

#

i'll keep it in mind when i go home

serene tulip
#

I specifically get the unsweetened version

#

dunno about the other flavors

#

also, forewarning, it will leave like, tea sediment

#

so beware that last sip or you'll end up chewing bark

#

unless you like that sorta thing

#

probably some decent fiber

#

good for the digestion

tropic garden
#

hahahaha thanks for the heads up
yeah i really can't find any mp3's tho it looks like they existed once

#

dead links, dead links everywhere

#

also the amazon version is abridged which is, hilarious to me, if you abridged BoT i'm not sure how much would be left

#

i say that with all the love in my heart

rain mortar
#

Yeah, I just found a bunch of dead links too

tropic garden
#

someone from the community did a reading several years back but it was live and not archived

#

in this same thread, amusingly, they pointed out the same as me which is that the audiobook is abridged and apparently only 2 hours whereas the dude reading from the community takes waaaaay longer than that. so. i really do think they cut it way down

#

not that that's, uh, shocking, at all.

#

half the fun of reading bot is going "why is this here"

Anyone have some really, really good films to recommend that have that coming-of-age story, but aren't terribly convoluted and focus on individuals and their relationships?

Stuff like Whiplash, or Devil wears Prada, or One More Time...?

might be a little too convoluted/abstract for what you're looking for, but Tekkonkinkreet is a weird and lovely anime film about a couple of brothers growing up on the streets

Alot of today's military operations are missions based with heavy consequences on civilian casualties. War will always be a human factor until we're all replaced with robots and to prevent/protect one's own people is paramount for a prospering society. The military gave you the internet, and most technological advances go through said military before becoming public. We have people putting bombs on themselves and blowing themselves up, trying to rack up as many civilian lives as possible. War isn't a pretty thing, no, but we no longer are in the Nam period where the US napalmed the bloody place. Next time somebody pulls the trigger on their detonator, pray your cou try has the means to prevent it

#

My point being: military are humans doing their job, it's not a pretty one but it's necessary and they aren't monsters. There are missions that are outright evil, and others that aim to secure life in war torn countries.

Breads don't really become that black

It's deceit

And really dark rye bread

snow ingot

Mmh, warm bread is great

buoyant frigate
#

chilly briar
#

hasty kernel
#

I believe so?

buoyant frigate
#

Definitely, ate some last night

#

The wires make it a bit stringy though

snow ingot
#

Speaking about blackberries

#

At the end of summer, we have a ton of them in the field where I walk my faithful doggo

#

and she totally loves them

#

but she can't take them from the vines for some reason

#

even if I put them right in front of her face

#

So I have to go blackberry picking for her

#

and she sits like such a lady when I grab one

#

All nice and proper

buoyant frigate
#

awwwwwww that's so blessed

spiral hazel
#

So, mods, I think you should form a band...

The Beefy Boys?

tropic garden
#

"should form a band" as if we aren't already one B)

#

love how the two people who reacced to this aren't mods

rain mortar
#

That's my secret, Cap... I'm always a mod squirtdevious

#

Hey, you mods already have at least one proven singer. When are y'all releasing a collab video of SG covers?

tropic garden
#

hahahahahaha

cedar rock
#

im completely down but idk how much the other mods like to sing

tropic garden
#

oh my god

cedar rock
#

i love to tho

tropic garden
#

oh no a gemini heard you

cedar rock
#

๐Ÿ•

tropic garden
#

rain mortar
#

I feel so lost

tropic garden
#

cedar rock
#

rain mortar
#

cedar rock
#

tropic garden
#

hahahaha the mods + jan

rain mortar
#

But pronounced 'do it' squirtdevious

tropic garden
#

unfortunately i don't have anywhere near ashley's range

#

we all become is the only song even vaguely within doability for me

sly stump
#

OH WAIT

#

I JUST REMEMBERED

cedar rock
#

wat. thats like the hardest one

rain mortar
#

Hey, believe in yourself! Being able to do any song justice is worth being proud of

cedar rock
#

the end has the highest high note ever

sly stump
#

we all become has a big range are you sure that's the right one

cedar rock
#

^

rain mortar
#

Don't listen to these doubters. I look forward to We All Become - Vendition

cedar rock
#

there isnt a day that goes by that i dont try to belt out the end of hymn to zagreus in my car

tropic garden
#

@sly stump it's more about the placement of the range than the width - i'm a mezzo and can't sing super duper low

sly stump
#

ahhhhh

tropic garden
#

i thought it was we all become but it could be she shines ๐Ÿค”

#

been a hot second since i've tried

sly stump
#

i'm so very gay for she shines

tropic garden
#

valid, as it is a very gay song

sly stump
#

it is

tropic garden
#

i really like uhhh mother i'm here too but obviously can't sing it

sly stump
#

:0? which one is that

rain mortar
#

Zulf's song from Bastion

sly stump
#

ooooh

#

i need to get around to bastion ...

tropic garden
#

i uhh didn't like it that much

#

might enjoy it more now that i'm, better at Games

#

but the narration over the combat meant i usually couldn't process what was being said

#

the majority of the story went over my head

rain mortar
#

I liked Bastion enough to NG+ it

#

Setting Sail, Coming Home is my favourite song from Bastion

tropic garden
#

same,

#

it's good.

rain mortar
#

The songs are good individually, but even better mashed into one

tropic garden
#

i can sing mother i'm here octave-up but not in the og range....obviously

#

i can almost, almost sing the verses

#

they're like. one whole step out of my range and it kills me

#

close enough that it feels like it should be there if i reach for it T^T

sly stump
#

I was on T briefly and it nudged my range just ... barely into this awkward midlane
