tame ridge
#

Tl;dr i think Dead Cells is a horrifically boring, unfocused mess that's beaten out by hades by a mile @fathom prairie

fathom prairie
#

What exactly does Hades excel at which Dead Cells doesn't, in terms of replayability and challenge? (which im assuming that's the element you found it boring since its the main catch of the game)

tame ridge
#

Specifically, having weapons that don't feel the same, enjoyable characters, an actual story, and not turning into a numbers game past the first couple of areas

fathom prairie
#

I do have to agree on the fact that there is almost no story to the game, they created a setting without a story. Nothing to write home about the replayability value either after you successfully win a run, there is almost no real incentive to play it again apart from leaderboards? (if you are into that kind of thing)

#

You have to give where credit is due, since Dead Cell has some depth to its builds, tho it gets old real fast when there are weapons or abilities which are excessively easier and stronger to use compared to the rest, destroying the value of its customization.

tame ridge
#

I'm just a person who thinks there isn't much of a point to having a billion weapons if they all feel the same

fathom prairie
#

You mean when weapons are just re-skinned versions of other weapons in a game? Or is it because they function the same?

tame ridge
#

Them functioning the same

#

Regardless of which one of the 50 straight swords or short swords you have, you will play the same way

cunning holly
#

I really didn't like dead cells which made me sad

fathom prairie
#

Yeah, it was a promising game.

cunning holly
#

But it tried to blend roguelike, metroidvania and speedrun into one game which ended up a really really weird mix

#

Combat is kind of fun, but what's the point of killing enemies when you can run past them all and get the speedrun gates

#

But then you don't get cells so you can't upgrade

#

So unless you've grinded out the game for a while, you have to choose between getting cells and getting loot on a run from the speedrun doors

fathom prairie
#

Yeah, there is no incentive to fight mobs when you are rewarded for speed.

cunning holly
#

You're rewarded for speed, but also there's another angle to not fighting mobs

velvet void
#

Shame you guys didn't enjoy dead cells, I personally loved it.

cunning holly
#

You get better loot and you don't have to fight enemies, so you'll survive easier

tame ridge
#

Personally, I had to get a mod that increased the amount of everything in the game by 4 (including enemies) just so I wasn't horrifically bored during the first half of a run

fathom prairie
#

Yeah, the pacing at the start of each run wasn't the best either ^^

hollow hill
#

Dead cells is a solid game. Interesting mechatics, lots of playstyle. But I find it a bit boring when you can skip all mobs and just fight bosses

fathom prairie
#

ye

#

It's less about the concept and more about the replayability that bothered me the most.

cunning holly
#

I mean hades also lacks a lot of replayability / room variance, but it's also the first major build out of early access

#

To be clear I'm not saying it doesn't have replayability

fathom prairie
#

Yes, hopefully more content will be added.

cunning holly
#

I want to look into modding hades but I also want to wait until it comes out, because what if I do something which is made obsolete by a later update πŸ€”

grand bramble
#

speaking of dead cells

velvet void
#

I found the replayability for me came from unlocking different weapons to try out different builds. The first few runs we're rough but after getting the combat down I was tearing through enemies and gaining insane movement speed from kills that let me reach timers

grand bramble
#

theres actually a transistor refernece in it

cunning holly
#

Hollow knight reference too

fathom prairie
#

Yeah, that is another problem, some builds are way more favorable than others due to the game's nature, making the majority of the builds and items more or less obsolete.

#

Wait in hades or dead cells?

tame ridge
#

Anyone here play enter the gungeon?

velvet void
#

Yup

cunning holly
#

Oh I was talking about dead cells

tame ridge
#

I might buy it during the Christmas sale, looks fun

grand bramble
cunning holly

I've played a lot of ETG, beat it around 4-5 times I think? Only killed one past but after that I was done with the game

Any game that lets me use the plasma cutter from dead space is a good one

cunning holly
#

32 hours according to steam

grand bramble
#

i have 48 hours

velvet void
#

I felt transistor had a similar prob with builds for me

fathom prairie
#

@grand bramble never even noticed that int the game.

grand bramble
#

i havent seen it either

cunning holly
#

Once I discovered the void/tap/leech ultimate lifesteal build in transistor

#

It's not really a challenge after that

fathom prairie
#

Yeah, exactly.

grand bramble
#

recently my boyfriend (Noine on here is his alt) got me super addicted to Slay the Spire

tame ridge
#

@velvet void transistor isn't a rougelike, though

fathom prairie
#

Slay the spire is a perfect example of having replayability value.

cunning holly
#

Slay the spire is only one of two single player games that has reached 100+ hours on steam for me

#

The other is skyrim

grand bramble
#

ive put in 54 hours in like 2 weeks

velvet void
#

It still has the problem tho

cunning holly
#

StS has so much good design in it

tame ridge
#

looks at 200 hours logged in xcom 2 and 100 logged in MGSV

#

Yeah ok

grand bramble
#

right now i have a super op infinite run going

#

i have a ritual dagger that does like
a base 300 damage

#

and enough cards that give me increased damage and energy that i can push it to 1000+

cunning holly
#
  1. If you think one thing works with another thing, it probably does
  2. Let the player be OP if they get things which work
  3. Give them mostly complete knowledge of most things (effects, map, deck, etc)
fathom prairie
#

And STS seems to be a perfect game to implement mods too.

cunning holly
#

that's the main 3 great design things about StS imo

velvet void
#

Need to play slay the spire some more, beat the game with the 3 early access characters and waited for release

grand bramble
#

about that

cunning holly
#

I've gotten to the final final boss twice and both times it kicked my ass

fathom prairie
#

velvet void
#

Less go

tame ridge
#

Anyone here a fan of xcom?

velvet void
#

Yeah

tame ridge
#

Specifically, xcom 2

velvet void
#

Xcom 1 a bit more

#

Kinda hates how xcom 2 time gates you on missions

cunning holly
#

yeah I stacked XCOM 2 with mods

#

Including removing time gates

tame ridge
#

Ah, yeah, that's an understandable complaint

#

Personally, I only have the mod that freezes the timer while you're concealed

cunning holly
#

I tried with the stealth mod that pauses the timer while in stealth, but even then I just... hated the timers

tame ridge
#

Because it actually makes sense

cunning holly
#

"True Concealment" right

velvet void
#

That's actually a game called Mutant Year zero that had a cool idea with stealth and turn based combat

cunning holly
#

I liked XCOM: EU/EW a lot more

grand bramble
#

unrelated and the only reason i kinda came here right now
is there any chance anybody here knows japaenese?
i kinda need help translating something to english
i decided to download a game that came out in japan like 2 weeks ago and i dont know how to use 2 mechanics cause i cant read the tutorials

tame ridge
#

But also in war of the chosen they added a lot of ways to make the timer less of a hassle

velvet void
#

Where you could move freely in stealth, set up, and engage when you want

tame ridge
#

(btw if you haven't played war of the chosen please do it's fantastic)

fathom prairie
#

At first I didn't like the concept of permanently losing characters in Xcom, but then learned to use them efficiently and started loving the game.

#

Also, the bs hit ratio really did piss me off. 99% chance to hit, misses

velvet void
#

That's another thing that I loved/hated in xcom. Once you get high level soldiers it's hard to lose them unless rng or bad decisions

#

And then you have to level up a pleb squaddie

tame ridge
#

It's impossible to lose them

velvet void
#

And hope he doesn't get blown out

tame ridge
#

fathom prairie
#

Iron man feels like torture for me.

tame ridge
#

I think iron man wouldn't work well with WotC

#

Because of how dangerous the chosen really are

fathom prairie
#

Also xcom 1 was less user friendly, especially when you realise you made a mistake long after it's been done.

velvet void
#

I'm a masochist so yeah lol

#

Play horror games for the same reason

tame ridge
#

Furi, you ever play darkwood?

#

That's a good horror game if I've ever seen one

fathom prairie
#

R7 was amazing, don't remember any new horror game that really stuck to me.

grand bramble
#

i ahve that
im too much a (cat) to play it though

tame ridge
#

Resi 7 was really really good, yeah

#

It was my favourite game of 2017

velvet void
#

Hell ya brother

#

Loved that game

tame ridge
#

Until I played pyre (which was my first supergiant game, actually)

velvet void
#

The wedding spooked me bad

tame ridge
#

I've only started darkwood, got too busy with other games n' stuff

#

Maybe I should finish it for Christmas

velvet void
#

Visage is another good one

#

It's real spook

tame ridge
#

πŸ‘

#

For me, a good mild spook is sunless sea

fathom prairie
#

is darkwood worth playing? I've seen the trailer but the gameplay felt stale.

tame ridge
#

Dark wood is very much worth playing if you're into the atmosphere

velvet void
#

I will say for Darkwood, nothing I've played recreates the feeling of hiding in your hideout hoping the monsters don't break in and smash in your head

tame ridge
#

If you're there for gameplay, you won't be very happy

velvet void
#

Like silent hill

tame ridge
#

Yup

fathom prairie
#

I don't mind the gameplay if it is story rich or like you said atmospheric.

tame ridge
#

You'll like it then, yeah

#

Btw, on a completely unrelated note

#

Furi is such a good game and I really want the studio to make some more stuff

#

silent hill 2 was amazing, I'd have to say one of the best survival horror game I've ever played.

#

I adored furi

tame ridge
#

So much so that it became your name πŸ˜›

velvet void
#

I still have the message you get after beating the game on the hardest diff from the devs

#

Made it all worth it

fathom prairie
#

The studio does make games, but they are phone games...

tame ridge
#

Oof

#

@velvet void I never got past the star on furier, that thing was a nightmare

fathom prairie
#

I've never beaten the hardest diff, playing with the keyboard and mouse didn't help either.

velvet void
#

Gonna start somewhere

#

Yeah no, controller is almost a must

fathom prairie
#

Furi does remind me of Hyper Light Drifter tho, great game.

tame ridge
#

Hyper Light Drifter is a game that I really want to love, but I can't

#

The game itself is gorgeous and the last section and boss are really, really cool

#

But the rest of the game only managed to slowly but surely annoy me, unfortunately

fathom prairie
#

What annoyed you exactly?

tame ridge
#

The metroidvania elements and level design

fathom prairie
#

As in exploration with no direction and a complex map?

tame ridge
#

Complex map that is sometimes very obtuse to figure out where to go in

fathom prairie
#

For me, that's the charm of traditional metroidvania games

#

Not exactly being told what to do and figuring it out yourself is part of the experience

#

But I can see why one would be frustrated.

#

If the game was a bit more like Ori the blind forest in terms of map design and UI interface, it would be way more user-friendly.

velvet void
#

I would do anything to play Dark souls 1 fresh again

#

Without knowing anything about it

tame ridge
#

Same

velvet void
#

The map design is one of my all time favs

tame ridge
#

DS1 is one of my favorites in general

#

Unfortunately, It got beat out by Wolfenstein: TNO, which is just πŸ‘Œ

velvet void
#

Played TNO and that game is indeed πŸ‘Œ

#

Although for me, Doom 2016 is still my favorite shooter from Id

Doom Eternal is also looking great in every aspect thus far

tame ridge
#

@cerulean cloak well, you actually do fight him in doom 2016

#

Technically speaking

velvet void
#

It's a realm of demons that invade and assimilate other realms

vital lava
#

All the demons are scared of the Doom guy according to lore, so Satan is probably not willing to go face to face with him.

tame ridge
#

Because the actual villain of the game is a businessman who wants to harvest hell for its energy named S.Hayden

velvet void
#

Like demon pirates

cerulean cloak
#

how do they know they're actual demon demons though

#

and not just interdimensional alien monsters

cerulean cloak

Also Samuel Hayden's and the Doom slayers interactions are the best

#

And to his credit, he does but at a cost

I'm hoping Journey isn't too pricey when it's released on the Epic launcher later. I'd really like to play it, never had a console for it. If they pull more exclusives/ports like that then that makes it a really interesting platform for me at least.

cedar rock
#

I agree, I am really surprised they managed to get journey and its a great addition

sharp grail
#

ive never played super meat boy

cedar rock
#

if they can pull in more exclusives like that then it really will become pretty big contention with steam id bet

vital lava
#

They also offer a much higher cut for the devs, which will probably play a role.

cedar rock
#

yep that was the most promising thing for me off the bat

#

that and how they lend extra support to developers using the unreal engine

split trout
#

Journey is a masterpiece but it's not for everyone

velvet void
#

Their privacy policy and refund service is pretty sketchy tho

split trout

I finished that game 5 times, no joke

cedar rock

yea there was some controversy about that

im curious to see how things will turn out for it once the dust settles

They also don't comply with one of the EU laws

#

IIRC when redeeming this game there's a box you can tick to not recieve any emails and offers

#

And that's surprisingly illegal

#

Because it has to be opt-in, not opt-out

velvet void
#

Also Tencent has owns like 40% of epic

#

And theyre like EA on steroids

#

So I'm waiting on using epic launcher for awhile until everything settles

solemn sierra
#

Not a big fan of Discord getting into games

#

I think they're sketchy

split trout
#

why's that, discord's store is actually one of the better ones around

#

their subscription service is actually good unlike everyone else

solemn sierra
#

Discord is also partly owned by Tencent

#

What happened with the r/ffxiv discord makes me incredibly wary of them.

velvet void
#

Oof

#

Rip in pieces

vital lava
#

What happened?

solemn sierra
#

I've never liked Discord coming in and trying to monetize "gamers", but only the "gamers" we like, not the ones we don't like that run rampant on our own servers.

#

Discord swooped in for one abusive user who was banned because someone posted porn on the server, the server administration was blamed for this and had their partner status revoked. When the administration tried to meet them halfway, Discord said "nope, your people use the r word too much so it's a toxic community", so they had to install a bot to censor any naughty words that Discord doesn't like.

#

Even though the use of said r word is rampant amongst a bunch of their partner servers

vital lava
#

That's insane. Also, why would they even care about partner status

solemn sierra
#

Because it looks good to Square Enix probably

#

All you get for partner is feeling good about yourself, a custom URL, and a jacket (Yes, I'm not joking, a jacket)

#

You get slightly better voice codecs

vital lava
#

To me it seems like any server that gets partnered just has a massive exodus when it happens because people like their smut/edgy jokes

The Metamorphoses (Latin: Metamorphōseōn librī: "Books of Transformations") is a Latin narrative poem by the Roman poet Ovid, considered his magnum opus. Comprising 11,995 lines, 15 books and over 250 myths, the poem chronicles the history of the world from its creation to...

#

it covers some stuff that's relevant, and a lot of stuff that isn't

orpheus and the trojan war are in there, the creation myths are in there... the main thing is that Ovid is a poet and a later era Roman poet at that so you're not getting a greek perspective on the myths

planning on getting a new laptop for college and kicking windows to the curb

#

debating between the xps13/15 and thinkpad t480

glass dock
#

I'd be careful

mossy matrix
#

leaning on the t480

glass dock
#

Some college courses assume Windows

mossy matrix
#

well - not completely

#

i'd be bringing my pc running windows

#

but like for my laptop, bye bye!!

#

and worst case, i've got the labs

glass dock
#

That's probably fine, I got through college without a laptop, although I wouldn't recommend it

mossy matrix
#

plus most CS classes actually assume unix-based systems haha, at least from the ones I've taken dual-enrollment

glass dock
#

They do indeed, but you just know there's going to be that one class that doesn't

#

Or some internal website that only works in IE6

mossy matrix
#

god

glass dock
#

Putting it another way - I'm expect to acquire either Windows or OSX for mainstream support soon

mossy matrix
#

fair enough

glass dock
#

Since my current day job almost locks me out of Linux :/

mossy matrix
#

it kinda depends which laptop i get and what storage option

#

a 1TB hdd is more than enough to dual boot for those emergency/niche situations

#

but if i got with anything less than a 500gb ssd (and if i get an ssd, it probably will be less than 500gb for cost reasons)

#

then, eh

#

i imagine worst case scenario just involves remote desktop or computer labs at midnight

glass dock
#

...Apparently that's swearing

#

I don't think <500GB is viable for your main drive unless all you do is program

#

In which case it totally is

#

My Arch partition is 100GB total and it's fine

mossy matrix
#

what was swearing? lmao

#

it kind of depends. I won't buy it until the summer during back-to-school sales, so I'll know the schools I'm going to by then

#

if the dorm footprint supports a PC, I don't expect to need said laptop to hold a bunch of junk

#

I could live with 256, I'd want to get to 500 because that's about how much I use up on my PC's hdd

#

the things that take up the most space on my drive are games anyways, and usually the massive ones that require at least some dedicated graphics card to run anyways

#

I'd prefer not to dual boot though honestly for hassle's sake

#

and the reason I'm looking at the xps line and thinkpad t-series line are the native linux support on so many of em

#

xps 13 you can get shipped with ubuntu 16.04 if you want, and that's probably what I'd get

#

most thinkpads are ubuntu certified too iirc

#

idk, I've still got half a year

#

and decisions to pray on lol

glass dock
#

Yeah I think native Linux support is invaluable just for the drivers

#

Assuming they work with recent kernel versions

#

Otherwise you're very sad indeed

#

Meanwhile, I'm trying to decide how wide is too wide for ultrawide πŸ˜›

split trout
glass dock
#

I think Ubuntu /Mint are great gateway drugs to Linux but I wouldn't wanna use 'em

#

The ability to choose your own WM is invaluable

#

Even if almost everything else about Arch objectively sucks

split trout
#

I tried using linux a few times but I never really enjoyed it

#

My experience basically boiled down to troubleshooting errors, using the console, getting more errors when trying to install literally anything

#

And when it does install I realize it's the 9 month old version and I have to go to the github page to download the updated tar.gz file and manually install it

mossy matrix
#

ah, linux

#

every 10 seconds i have a new package update

#

ubuntu is honestly fine, just because of the support

#

i run KDE on my laptop

#

it's kinda heavy but it looks nice and works well

#

like honestly? I just want the dang unix shell lol

split trout
#

And then people ask why people don't use linux, regardless of what version you're on it's incredibly un-user friendly

mossy matrix
#

ehhhh

#

there are some distros that are quite user friendly

#

and you can very easily never be on command line

#

the community just isn't great at bringing people in properly lol

split trout
#

and then you realize that one application you want doesn't work on your distro for some reason

#

It's just hell, they really need to figure out something if they want regular people (i.e not CS majors) to use it

glass dock
#

I don't think Linux is great if you don't intend to leverage the terminal heavily

#

But since I'm a software engineer, I'm stuck using it a ton

#

And Linux offers by far the best workflow around it

split trout
#

Yeah I can get that

mossy matrix
#

any kind of programming or software work, having a unix shell is invaluable

#

that said, windows subsystem for linux is here and viable

glass dock
#

WSL feels very brittle for me

split trout
#

I'm in a computer science college myself but eh, windows works fine

mossy matrix
#

like idk I feel like most people could pick up ubuntu or mint or kde pretty easily

#

windows covers most use-cases better though

glass dock
#

It's all fun and games until you realise that the networking subsystem doesn't work in some specific way and you need it to and you're just screwed if it doesn't

mossy matrix
#

the people who leave windows are usually bc they need a unix shell, want more privacy, or have a foss thing

#

ah

#

yeah that sounds Not Fun β„’

glass dock
#

@split trout invest in learning to use zsh, vim, and a twm properly

#

It's a huge efficiency gain

mossy matrix
#

god i need to learn how to use vim better

glass dock
#

Assuming you intend to program for a living

mossy matrix
#

i can get in, out, and save things

glass dock
#

If you don't then I guess it doesn't much matter

mossy matrix
#

and i remember the delete line and delete word commands lol

glass dock
#

@mossy matrix vimtutor

mossy matrix
#

that's about it

#

yeah i ran it a few times, kept forgetting stuff

#

just need more practical use tbh

glass dock
#

Doing all your editing in it also helps πŸ˜›

mossy matrix
#

ended up switching my default text editor over

#

yeah

#

I just want/need more experience and I'm sure I'll pick up things on the way

split trout
#

hmm I'll check those out, but the problem is my main programming language is C# and linux doesn't like to play well with it usually

glass dock
#

Oh yeah, this advice does not apply for C# or Java

#

Just go big on Visual Studio and IntelliJ, respectively

muted ocean
#

@sharp grail if its cringe imma kill u

#

wow

split trout
#

visual studio is a treasure, man. I can't imagine using anything else tbh

muted ocean

I find IntelliJ better for Java than VS is for C#

#

but since you can't switch them around it doesn't make much difference in practice

muted ocean
#

after using VS for 5 years im sick of hearing "Visual" and "Studio" in any sentence combined

glass dock
#

I can't imagine trying to develop Java without IntelliJ

#

The ability to autocomplete or autoimport anything on the classpath is gamechanging

#

Everything else I agree is pretty meh

mossy matrix
#

ah yeah the auto-imports are super nice

Delayed as heck: Linux IS fairly user-unfriendly, but hoy boy does it have its uses. I've had to work with it for QA testing.

solemn sierra
#

Never understood Linux, I can understand its uses or why you would use it. I use freebsd to host servers. But I never quite understood the zealotry or how people push super hard for one version of linux over another. I knew a guy who kept telling people to install Gentoo and how superior it is to Ubuntu and Debian. Or people who seem to think that Linux is miles superior than Windows: hint, it's not.

glass dock
#

I think it's clearly superior if you use terminals or care about your window manager and worse in every other meaningful respect

#

BSD vs Linux is completely uninteresting to an end user, you just use whichever distribution is better supported

Not sure I'd point anyone to Gentoo though :P

@fallen goblet Some one off the beaten path where everything killed me and I had no easy way out. I wish there were more instances to quick travel.

Which I understand the point is to make them scarce, but... I think that just makes the game feel claustrophobic.

ripe quest
#

Hollow Knight is so good like omg what a game

empty copper
#

@sharp grail Lol. Me with Smash Ultimate.

fallen goblet
#

I dont want to spoil the experience.
The game is supposed to feel like you are lost. Sometimes you just end up at places you dont know how to get out and that is part of the experience.
It always feels rewarding finding a way back and that is what kept me playing most of the time.

empty copper
#

I have major anxiety and feeling lost gives me anxiety.

fallen goblet
#

That is understandable.

ripe quest
#

The comparison doesn't mean anything anymore but it feels a lot like dark souls in this aspect

#

you are truly lost in a world with a cryptic story

fallen goblet
#

Yep. The story is basically told with random texts on items, background and even dead enemies

#

Its really atmospheric and lonely most of the time

empty copper
#

I understood the appeal of the game.

#

It just didn't hook me.

#

And I could never figure out why, aside from smaller things. Like it giving me anxiety.

#

And needing to backtrack to save or quick travel.

ripe quest
#

Imo it really goes off the charts by the time the paths opens up a little more

ripe quest

backtracking isn't necessary a bad thing

it's a fun exercise to create a mental map of your environment

I consider An Untitled Story to be the quintessential metroidvania. Which is ironic, because it's neither Metroid nor Castlevania.

fallen goblet

And I started excitingly backtracking trying out spots I couldnt reach before

empty copper
#

It's also tied with Bastion for my favorite game of all time.

Since the second one is so much easier than the first.

fallen goblet

same

#

Cadence still most fav character

#

also the DLC character and the DLC are amazing

empty copper
#

The DLC has been collecting dust in my Steam wishlist for a looooooong time.

ripe quest
#

It was the soundtrack by Danny Baranowski that made me want to play the game

empty copper
#

Probably won't actually get around to getting it unless I get into the base game again first.

#

Well of course.

#

But everyone knows DannyB.

fallen goblet
#

What made me play is the concept of turn-based combat on a timer with a beat.
Who ever came up with that idea is a godly genius

#

You miss a beat? You skip a turn. Easy

empty copper
#

DannyB had Jules on to do guitar for some of the songs (which he'd done for one of the Isaac games, if I recall), and Jules on his own started doing full metal versions of some of the songs, in his style. When Danny and the devs heard what he'd been working on, they decided to have him do his own versions of the entire soundtrack. So, if I recall correctly, the different difficulties actually spawned because of that.

#

So that's pretty awesome.

#

Or at least the idea of having different soundtracks for the different difficulties.

Just the players who go for bard can be split into 2 categories

zinc karma
#

(πŸ‘€ dnd and ace characters, my jam)

hasty kernel
#

The ones I just mentioned

#

And the ones who just want to make bad puns

supple terrace
#

Li-

hasty kernel
#

Or be a rogue multiclass

supple terrace
#

... okay, point.

hasty kernel
#

I guess there is the rare third option of bards that actually want to be bards

#

But they are an elusive kind

supple terrace
#

But seriously, in the larp I was in, I was playing a changeling (as in someone stolen by the fae).

#

Usually ace is easier to bypass drama.

#

At least in the larps I've been in.

hasty kernel
#

I always wanted to make a rapper bard with the stage name "slamminem", but A, that felt too derivative, and B, I cannot write bars to save my life

zinc karma
#

i am definitely guilty of the pun bard category

supple terrace
#

(Your mileage may vary, my non-binary, bi rear has a weird experience.)

#

Sven, you and me both.

#

That's why I went 'point.'

zinc karma
#

tho i suppose i'd also play bard just to bs a lot

#

but i can do that on any class

hasty kernel
#

Speaking of puns and characters

zinc karma
#

it just feels like you have more flair w bard

hasty kernel
#

My current character is "The Devils advocate"

#

He is literally a demonic lawyer

#

Representing a devil

supple terrace
#

Speaking of tabletop, I have to finish writing the charm cheat sheet for my Exalted PC.

zinc karma
#

excellent pun char

sharp grail
#

ive given up on ever being a bard because ill never be able to do it as fabulously as sam riegel

supple terrace
#

Then take a different angle.

zinc karma
#

my wizard currently has a special blink dog that looks like a giant eyeball named Pupil bc we had a pun session and i made a seeing-eye dog with "barkane eye"

hasty kernel
#

For bonus points, his devil is Dis

#

So if someone asks "what are you up to", he can answer "Dis and dat"

supple terrace
#

One game I was a gnome swashbuckler who terrified the goliath.

sharp grail
#

lol thats amazing... a lawyer

#

HA

hasty kernel
#

Thunderclap is one of his ... spells`

#

Or cantrips`

zinc karma
#

all the booms

hasty kernel
#

Not sure, but the point is to yell Objection with it

zinc karma
#

Excellent

hasty kernel
#

Also looking forward to getting the Finger of Death

#

Just go full Phoenix Wright

zinc karma
#

is your devil's advocate also an ace attorney

sharp grail
#

that is an amazing character

supple terrace
#

Because "NOOO WHY ARE YOU RUNNING AFTER THE OGRE ZOMBIE"
Suddenly backstabbing the zombie since I'm taking him solo.
DM: "Because they specialize in that stuff."

hasty kernel
#

On a sidenote, I still want to DM just so I can have a legendary dagger called "beauty"

#

Stuck in a beholders eye

zinc karma
#

LOL good

supple terrace
#

Same game allowed me to tell that player, after they mentioned their goliath was raised by druids: "Funny, she doesn't LOOK Druish."

sharp grail
#

my pc is a water genasi cleric who is just a rebellious teenager who went adventuring because Mom Said Not To

zinc karma
#

genasi are cool!

#

what domain?

hasty kernel
#

Oh yeah, I did DM an extremely silly oneshot once

#

Where one of my players was a Warlock whose pact deity was "Nyarlapothead"

#

He was basically Warlock Shaggy

sharp grail
#

life because thats all what dnd beyond let me choose

#

i wanted city domain initially

zinc karma
#

oooo cool
i want to play trickery domain some day but i'll live vicariously through one of my players who is a trickery cleric in the game im DMing ahaha

sharp grail
#

i also have a backup character for in case they die

#

which is..... their mom.... :'))

zinc karma
#

oh nooo fjksld

hasty kernel
#

Well, lets hope it doesnt come to that, because Im pretty sure "mom whose son died" characters are brutally OP

sharp grail
#

LOL

zinc karma
#

i don't have a backup character for one of my campaigns yet but i probably should bc i'd definitely have a permadeath unless my patron decides to bring me back a second time πŸ˜‚

hasty kernel
#

Almost "Grandma who hears you havent been eating enough" levels of OP in fact

sharp grail
#

child but yes. dont mess with the usually mild mannered mom

zinc karma
#

omg we have an elderly fighter in one of my parties and we all call her grandma
can confirm she's OP

hasty kernel
#

Actually, is that a thing for grandmas everywhere?

#

I know its that way for slavic grandmothers

#

Well, that and you have to call them every day

zinc karma
#

my chinese grandma also liked to ask if we had enough food πŸ˜‚ did not have to call mine every day tho

sharp grail
#

also i have an excuse to link this yet again since were talking dnd

zinc karma
#

πŸ‘€

sharp grail
zinc karma
#

A-AWW

sharp grail
#

look at them. babies

zinc karma
#

that's adorable

sharp grail
#

theres one more pic in the link

#

my woterbaby is in the second one

zinc karma
#

a good baby

hasty kernel
#

The mom would be even more op if she was latina

#

Because then she gets proficiency in Chanclas

zinc karma
#

i don't think we've had a group nap in our own dnd groups yet

#

we did have group jogging tho lol

#

grandma took us all jogging before breakfast and it ended up giving me and our ranger advantage on our athletics checks to escape from cultists πŸ˜‚

hasty kernel
#

Well, the only problem with my group is that Im pretty sure were never gonna be better than chaotic neutral

#

I think currently weve got 2 lawful evil guys, one neutral evil guy and one chaotic neutral

zinc karma
#

lol wow 2 lawful evil

hasty kernel
#

Well, Im a lawyer, so that was a given

#

I think the other guy was some kinda gangster?

#

As in, member of organized crime

zinc karma
#

our dm banned evil chars for pcs bc she didn't want to deal w running that w many new players who might not know dnd etiquette yet
tho tbh our fighter toes the evil line p often πŸ˜‚

#

but we have one (1) token good character in that party

hasty kernel
#

Well, were all close friends, so newcomers would be from the group anyway

#

Funny enough, despite us all being evil, all of our characters also prefer to avoid combat

zinc karma
#

ye our group was online and we didn't all know each other v well yet when we started

supple terrace
#

Oh god, chanclas.

zinc karma
#

evil chars are fun to play! just a lot of ppl end up going the obnoxious route so i think the dm wanted to avoid that w ppl who aren't super used to rping yet ahaha

hasty kernel
#

Also the start of the story doesnt involve us being very evil

#

Then again, the setting is that the world is lots of shades of grey

supple terrace
#

My changeling character in one game's biggest clue that he was pissed was if he removes his shoes by hand, as if he's about to lob it at someone.

zinc karma
#

im getting all my villain kicks by being a DM, i can play every alignment all at once aww yiss

rich wave
#

The best thing about DMing/STing/GMing is getting to play all the characters you never got to play in a normal campaign

#

The worst thing about co-DMing is when the other DMs in the post-apocalyptic game don't let the apocalypse have been started by a group of four people calling themselves the "Camerata"

sharp grail
#

ive only played one session with my group, and when we started the dm asked all of us again whats our alignment

#

pretty much everyone but our paladin said Chaotic Neutral

rich wave
#

Who were using a soul-eating sword artifact to reshape the world

sharp grail
#

"okay, is there anyone EXCEPT for zamiel who isnt chaotic neutral?"

#

absolute silence in the call

zinc karma
#

πŸ˜‚

hasty kernel
#

Chaotic Neutral is the worst alignment

sharp grail
#

also i suggested sneaking up on a goblin camp while holding hands and we got advantage for hand-holding. thats the power of friendship!

zinc karma
#

in my appropriately named chaos party we have...

  • the one token good character, our neutral good druid
  • 2 chaotic neutral characters, the moneyhoarding murder hobo fighter and the v chill warlock
  • 2 lawful neutral characters, one of which was a sorcerer cop and the other was our rogue who had a magical alignment swap and used to be chaotic neutral
  • and then me who is a true neutral monk
    our poor poor druid
hasty kernel
#

The only time its acceptable is when you roll every time you want to make a decision to figure out what you will do

#

So, actually chaotic neutral

rich wave
#

I've been liking the OotS alignment explanations lately

sharp grail
#

i doubt were going to stick closely to alignments tbh because were just having fun and i personally always had trouble defining actions by alignments

rich wave
sharp grail
#

oh no poor druid

rich wave
#

There we go

hasty kernel
#

Oh yeah, I gotta make a chaotic evil druid at some point

zinc karma
#

my wizard is chaotic neutral/goodish, and my warlock is lawful good bc i wanted to play him like a paladin πŸ˜‚

hasty kernel
#

I dont think lawful good Warlock really works?

zinc karma
#

except he made a pact w smth that is definitely not good and forgot about it

#

it's been difficult but i've been making it work ahaha

sharp grail
#

everything can work if you believe

hasty kernel
#

Its mostly the whole pact thing

#

You dont have a choice for a good guy, as far as pacts are concerned, and if you break the pact, Im pretty sure you lose the magic?

zinc karma
#

im p sure you can still believe in smth but then do stuff against it every once in a while
you'd just be horrified w yourself πŸ˜‚

#

but he's starting as lawful good bc he didn't remember he made a pact so he's been trying to be a good guy
so we're going to see how the rest of the campaign pans out and whether he can stay lawful good, which is fun to me lol

#

i made a pact w smth neutral so i could technically still be good
except this is a homebrew campaign so i don't think it's neutral any more hahaha

#

but it's ok i was going to play a hexblade at melee range so if warlock doesn't pan out
i'll swap to a martial class w the dm's permission since i have strength and dex anyways :d

#

i didn't neeeeed the strength and dex but the whole backstory was "whoops im magic? uh oh" so he was a jock all this time

hasty kernel
#

Ah, I see

#

It is odd though

#

Paladins have an explicit way to play contrary to their usual alignment, as Oathbreakers

#

But Warlocks dont?

zinc karma
#

nope! so it'll be fun to rp :Dc

velvet void
#

Well Paladins have ideals to abide by

zinc karma
#

ppl are complicated anyways, alignments oversimplify stuff a lot bc sometimes ur ideals and behaviour don't quite match up

velvet void
#

Warlocks dont

zinc karma
#

ye

hasty kernel
#

They dont have ideals, but they do have to do things for their deity

#

Or fiende

velvet void
#

Mostly deals

zinc karma
#

depends on the patron tbh

velvet void
#

Ye

zinc karma
#

some patrons don't really care v much e.g. archfeys lol

#

my patron is hexblade so like
idk what a sword wants atm but my dm will let me know, i can't wait to suffer

velvet void
#

Old one patron is fun too

zinc karma
#

yes i want to play more warlocks some day!

hasty kernel
#

Mine is Dis

#

Who in Dis setting is the leader of a cultmafia

zinc karma
#

they sound like fun bc the dm would ask me to do stuff i might not want to do lol

#

fiends and other evil patrons are probably p high on the "we definitely want you to do things for us" scale

velvet void
#

I had a party member who made a deal with fiend to gain warlock powers

#

All he wanted was for the PC to party and be debaucherous

zinc karma
#

πŸ˜‚ that's hilarious

hasty kernel
#

Still not sure on the name for the cultmafia

velvet void
#

Turns out later he had a kid from sleeping around
