ty <3, feels weird to be done with it though lol
Congratulations! I still suffer for toefl testπ
Been having insomnia as of late so I decided to treat myself and give me something to do
π
wise choice
@severe blade reminds me... I should start studying for the next JLPT exam lol
Tl;dr i think Dead Cells is a horrifically boring, unfocused mess that's beaten out by hades by a mile @fathom prairie
What exactly does Hades excel at which Dead Cells doesn't, in terms of replayability and challenge? (which im assuming that's the element you found it boring since its the main catch of the game)
Specifically, having weapons that don't feel the same, enjoyable characters, an actual story, and not turning into a numbers game past the first couple of areas
I do have to agree on the fact that there is almost no story to the game, they created a setting without a story. Nothing to write home about the replayability value either after you successfully win a run, there is almost no real incentive to play it again apart from leaderboards? (if you are into that kind of thing)
You have to give where credit is due, since Dead Cell has some depth to its builds, tho it gets old real fast when there are weapons or abilities which are excessively easier and stronger to use compared to the rest, destroying the value of its customization.
I'm just a person who thinks there isn't much of a point to having a billion weapons if they all feel the same
You mean when weapons are just re-skinned versions of other weapons in a game? Or is it because they function the same?
Them functioning the same
Regardless of which one of the 50 straight swords or short swords you have, you will play the same way
I really didn't like dead cells which made me sad
Yeah, it was a promising game.
But it tried to blend roguelike, metroidvania and speedrun into one game which ended up a really really weird mix
Combat is kind of fun, but what's the point of killing enemies when you can run past them all and get the speedrun gates
But then you don't get cells so you can't upgrade
So unless you've grinded out the game for a while, you have to choose between getting cells and getting loot on a run from the speedrun doors
Yeah, there is no incentive to fight mobs when you are rewarded for speed.
You're rewarded for speed, but also there's another angle to not fighting mobs
Shame you guys didn't enjoy dead cells, I personally loved it.
You get better loot and you don't have to fight enemies, so you'll survive easier
Personally, I had to get a mod that increased the amount of everything in the game by 4 (including enemies) just so I wasn't horrifically bored during the first half of a run
Yeah, the pacing at the start of each run wasn't the best either ^^
Dead cells is a solid game. Interesting mechatics, lots of playstyle. But I find it a bit boring when you can skip all mobs and just fight bosses
ye
It's less about the concept and more about the replayability that bothered me the most.
I mean hades also lacks a lot of replayability / room variance, but it's also the first major build out of early access
To be clear I'm not saying it doesn't have replayability
Yes, hopefully more content will be added.
I want to look into modding hades but I also want to wait until it comes out, because what if I do something which is made obsolete by a later update π€
speaking of dead cells
I found the replayability for me came from unlocking different weapons to try out different builds. The first few runs we're rough but after getting the combat down I was tearing through enemies and gaining insane movement speed from kills that let me reach timers
theres actually a transistor refernece in it
Hollow knight reference too
Yeah, that is another problem, some builds are way more favorable than others due to the game's nature, making the majority of the builds and items more or less obsolete.
Wait in hades or dead cells?
Anyone here play enter the gungeon?
Yup
Oh I was talking about dead cells
I might buy it during the Christmas sale, looks fun
I've played a lot of ETG, beat it around 4-5 times I think? Only killed one past but after that I was done with the game
3 pics
Any game that lets me use the plasma cutter from dead space is a good one
32 hours according to steam
i have 48 hours
I felt transistor had a similar prob with builds for me
@grand bramble never even noticed that int the game.
i havent seen it either
Once I discovered the void/tap/leech ultimate lifesteal build in transistor
It's not really a challenge after that
Yeah, exactly.
recently my boyfriend (Noine on here is his alt) got me super addicted to Slay the Spire
@velvet void transistor isn't a rougelike, though
Slay the spire is a perfect example of having replayability value.
Slay the spire is only one of two single player games that has reached 100+ hours on steam for me
The other is skyrim
ive put in 54 hours in like 2 weeks
It still has the problem tho
StS has so much good design in it
right now i have a super op infinite run going
i have a ritual dagger that does like
a base 300 damage
and enough cards that give me increased damage and energy that i can push it to 1000+
- If you think one thing works with another thing, it probably does
- Let the player be OP if they get things which work
- Give them mostly complete knowledge of most things (effects, map, deck, etc)
And STS seems to be a perfect game to implement mods too.
that's the main 3 great design things about StS imo
Need to play slay the spire some more, beat the game with the 3 early access characters and waited for release
about that
I've gotten to the final final boss twice and both times it kicked my ass
dope
Less go
Anyone here a fan of xcom?
Yeah
Specifically, xcom 2
Ah, yeah, that's an understandable complaint
Personally, I only have the mod that freezes the timer while you're concealed
I tried with the stealth mod that pauses the timer while in stealth, but even then I just... hated the timers
Because it actually makes sense
"True Concealment" right
That's actually a game called Mutant Year zero that had a cool idea with stealth and turn based combat
I liked XCOM: EU/EW a lot more
unrelated and the only reason i kinda came here right now
is there any chance anybody here knows japaenese?
i kinda need help translating something to english
i decided to download a game that came out in japan like 2 weeks ago and i dont know how to use 2 mechanics cause i cant read the tutorials
But also in war of the chosen they added a lot of ways to make the timer less of a hassle
Where you could move freely in stealth, set up, and engage when you want
(btw if you haven't played war of the chosen please do it's fantastic)
At first I didn't like the concept of permanently losing characters in Xcom, but then learned to use them efficiently and started loving the game.
Also, the bs hit ratio really did piss me off. 99% chance to hit, misses
That's another thing that I loved/hated in xcom. Once you get high level soldiers it's hard to lose them unless rng or bad decisions
And then you have to level up a pleb squaddie
It's impossible to lose them
And hope he doesn't get blown out
If you just save scum fingerguns
obligatory "xcom cheats in your favour on hit rolls" reminder
I play iron Man for the thrill
Nice
Iron man feels like torture for me.
I think iron man wouldn't work well with WotC
Because of how dangerous the chosen really are
Also xcom 1 was less user friendly, especially when you realise you made a mistake long after it's been done.
R7 was amazing, don't remember any new horror game that really stuck to me.
i ahve that
im too much a (cat) to play it though
Until I played pyre (which was my first supergiant game, actually)
The wedding spooked me bad
I've only started darkwood, got too busy with other games n' stuff
Maybe I should finish it for Christmas
is darkwood worth playing? I've seen the trailer but the gameplay felt stale.
Dark wood is very much worth playing if you're into the atmosphere
I will say for Darkwood, nothing I've played recreates the feeling of hiding in your hideout hoping the monsters don't break in and smash in your head
If you're there for gameplay, you won't be very happy
Like silent hill
Yup
I don't mind the gameplay if it is story rich or like you said atmospheric.
You'll like it then, yeah
Btw, on a completely unrelated note
Furi is such a good game and I really want the studio to make some more stuff
silent hill 2 was amazing, I'd have to say one of the best survival horror game I've ever played.
So much so that it became your name π
I still have the message you get after beating the game on the hardest diff from the devs
Made it all worth it
The studio does make games, but they are phone games...
I've never beaten the hardest diff, playing with the keyboard and mouse didn't help either.
Furi does remind me of Hyper Light Drifter tho, great game.
Hyper Light Drifter is a game that I really want to love, but I can't
The game itself is gorgeous and the last section and boss are really, really cool
But the rest of the game only managed to slowly but surely annoy me, unfortunately
What annoyed you exactly?
The metroidvania elements and level design
As in exploration with no direction and a complex map?
Complex map that is sometimes very obtuse to figure out where to go in
For me, that's the charm of traditional metroidvania games
Not exactly being told what to do and figuring it out yourself is part of the experience
But I can see why one would be frustrated.
If the game was a bit more like Ori the blind forest in terms of map design and UI interface, it would be way more user-friendly.
I would do anything to play Dark souls 1 fresh again
Without knowing anything about it
Same
The map design is one of my all time favs
DS1 is one of my favorites in general
Unfortunately, It got beat out by Wolfenstein: TNO, which is just π
Played TNO and that game is indeed π
Although for me, Doom 2016 is still my favorite shooter from Id
"They are rage, brutal, without mercy. But you...you will be worse."
"Rip and tear untill it is done."
Doom Eternal is also looking great in every aspect thus far
Oh yes
Doom Eternal looks like a banger, yeah
As opposed to Wolfenstein 2
Which was a nosedive into mediocrity and I hate it
more like doot eternal
πΊ
DOOTING INTENSIFIES
What if
MP3 Download: http://adf.ly/1aMkDg seriously why would you want that anyway We detected your video may be shaky. Would you like us to stabilize it?
And you doot the hell gates closed
i'm not too familiar with doom or its lore but how come you never get to fight satan
Because he's too wig for that
too scared*
Well in new Doom, hell isn't the traditional hell
It's a realm of demons that invade and assimilate other realms
All the demons are scared of the Doom guy according to lore, so Satan is probably not willing to go face to face with him.
Because the actual villain of the game is a businessman who wants to harvest hell for its energy named S.Hayden
Like demon pirates
how do they know they're actual demon demons though
and not just interdimensional alien monsters
It's what they call themselves
nice
Also Samuel Hayden's and the Doom slayers interactions are the best
Agreed
Doom guy doesn't care Doom guy just wants to smash demons
"Carefully remove the-"
[angry stomping noises]
But Sam wants to harvest argent energy for the betterment of mankind
And to his credit, he does but at a cost
I love Samuel, even though he is kinda sorta the Satan analogoue of the story
Because he sacrifices humanity for profit with his hellrift plan
The real evil was man all along
scary door.wmv
Because he sacrifices humanity for profit with his hellrift plan
How does he make profit when all his customers are dead, tho
Humanity could also mean his morals, or
His actual robot body
Y'know
(basically I'm saying that him being a robot is a metaphor of how he sacrificed his own humanity for profit)
Is there any indication that he ever was human?
Yup
In his codex entry or whatever
It says the he was a human scientist that contracted stage 4 brain cancer
Hooman
Ah. I didn't know about that.
Without the regen suit too
He just had his crusader armour on
So uuuuh Epic Launcher got an update.
Oh yeah I noticed that last night
We think developers should be able to focus on building great games and communities.
In 2019, the Discord store will allow all developers to self-publish games with a 90/10 revenue split so they can.

How to one-up the competition
Yikes discord has no chill
woah
Wonder what the minimum requirements are to publish on discord
Like how much shovelware is there going to be yknow
everyone's going hard on steam these days
i know steam's trying to make its platform more dev friendly......................but only for major studios
so these indie-friendly competitors are good
Meanwhile, subnautica is free on the epic games store https://www.epicgames.com/store/en-US/product/subnautica/home
Ayy
Perma free or nah?
giving free games to promote your platform is my favorite trend in the last 5 years
If it's perma free, that's sweet
Grab it and it is
Aw hell yeah
super meat boy is also going to be free on epic store later this month
But literally everyone owns it by now soooo
I'm hoping Journey isn't too pricey when it's released on the Epic launcher later. I'd really like to play it, never had a console for it. If they pull more exclusives/ports like that then that makes it a really interesting platform for me at least.
I agree, I am really surprised they managed to get journey and its a great addition
ive never played super meat boy
if they can pull in more exclusives like that then it really will become pretty big contention with steam id bet
They also offer a much higher cut for the devs, which will probably play a role.
yep that was the most promising thing for me off the bat
that and how they lend extra support to developers using the unreal engine
Journey is a masterpiece but it's not for everyone
Their privacy policy and refund service is pretty sketchy tho
I finished that game 5 times, no joke
yea there was some controversy about that
im curious to see how things will turn out for it once the dust settles
They also don't comply with one of the EU laws
IIRC when redeeming this game there's a box you can tick to not recieve any emails and offers
And that's surprisingly illegal
Because it has to be opt-in, not opt-out
Also Tencent has owns like 40% of epic
And theyre like EA on steroids
So I'm waiting on using epic launcher for awhile until everything settles
why's that, discord's store is actually one of the better ones around
their subscription service is actually good unlike everyone else
Discord is also partly owned by Tencent
What happened with the r/ffxiv discord makes me incredibly wary of them.
What happened?
I've never liked Discord coming in and trying to monetize "gamers", but only the "gamers" we like, not the ones we don't like that run rampant on our own servers.
Discord swooped in for one abusive user who was banned because someone posted porn on the server, the server administration was blamed for this and had their partner status revoked. When the administration tried to meet them halfway, Discord said "nope, your people use the r word too much so it's a toxic community", so they had to install a bot to censor any naughty words that Discord doesn't like.
Even though the use of said r word is rampant amongst a bunch of their partner servers
That's insane. Also, why would they even care about partner status
Because it looks good to Square Enix probably
All you get for partner is feeling good about yourself, a custom URL, and a jacket (Yes, I'm not joking, a jacket)
You get slightly better voice codecs
To me it seems like any server that gets partnered just has a massive exodus when it happens because people like their smut/edgy jokes
"For Twitch broadcasters, we look for streamers that have around 10,000 followers and at least 100 concurrent viewers. You must be streaming at least 4 times per week.
For Mixer broadcasters, we look for streamers that have around 10,000 followers and at least 50 concurrent viewers. You must be streaming at least 4 times per week.
For YouTube, we look for channels with at least 100,000 subscribers and 10,000 average views per video. You must also upload 2-3 videos per week.
For Reddit communities, we take a look at subreddits that have 8,000+ subscribers."
Something like that, yea
ah thanks!!
What I wonder is what perks does that partnership entail because there doesn't seem to be any advantage for the members
There isn't outside of slightly better voice codecs, the advantage is all for the owners.
It's kind of like owning a subreddit really, you get to be a glorified administrator
The greatest of honors
I like to think people don't tend to do things for free online. The subreddit moderators of r/ffxiv try real hard to get close to square enix
I suppose my problem sits with "I don't like authority" and "I don't like suits trying to parade as normal people"
people who manage online fan communities are authority/suits...?
im not sure i understand
I guess that can describe those who go crazy on some powertrip
But otherwise I dunno
Hello
Both. Been through too many places ruined by power hungry admins. And it seems like "gaming" is monetized in ways that are awkward to me. Gaming culture is a microcosm and I find it really cringy when a multi-million venture capital company like Discord tries to pass off as that. Look guys we're gamers too xDDDD right fellow kids?
And it's not just that, it's that they sweep in and attempt to appropriate every positive aspect of that culture while ignoring or denying the negative ones.
I don't mind that part, they have to market themselves somehow
and it's still better than whatever youtube et al. is trying to pull
I'm just afraid discord pulls a skype, i.e. realizes they're bleeding money, sells to Big Corp. LLC
BigCorp LLC realizes they can't keep up with the quality of service and not bleed money
so they rip apart the infrastructure
and have a terrible discord, where 80% of a conversation is "hey can you hear me"
The Walmart classic

@dull bane yup, It happened twice to me while fighting Meg
How far have you gotten?
God, I'm loving the insane amount of rain we've been getting two weeks into summer
@candid sparrow out of the line yet?
Lmao yeah

In regards to pit bulls:
I donβt know, they kinda look like Vienna sausages that got confused during the cooking process and had to stop and ask for directions to The nearest build a bear
that description of pit bulls is so strange that I'm not even sure if you're describing how they look or what π π
(not an insult, I'm just very amused)
I think due to the cuddly or something?
Unrelated to that, I got an art commission of a character and I am pleased and throwing it all over. https://i.imgur.com/dkwA7dt.jpg
whoops, oh well, it's a good picture.
fellas, i need help
im trying to make a new character in this rpg
but there are too many choices im paralyzed
what choices you got?
like
11 classes
with multiclassing as an option
and 5+ subclasses for each class
and thats before getting into the races and backgrounds and stuff
ahh
roll a d12 for class, with a 12 being a re-roll
and roll a d6 for the sub-class (or a dice with an amount of sides appropriate for how many sub-classes their are) re-roll on a 6 (for a d6)
π
but i dont wanna play something random this time
i guess i might play random in my next playthrough though
sounds kinda fun tbh
Could roll up a bunch and then choose from what you got
Not totally random but you still have a limit on what to play
that's another option
you know what
i think i made my decision
shieldbearers of saint elcga paladin with wizard multiclass
and im gonna roleplay as some kind of like rational guy dude person
who has super high IQ and watched all the rick and morty episodes 6 times each
@vestal patrol how about Ovid's Metamorphoses, if you're just looking for myths? they aren't relevant to the current game story much but they sure are interesting
and well-known
it's technically roman but
you know.
haha, i'll listen to it ALL..I've got very very boring IT related project work on my horizon for 2019. So i need alot of entertainment for my ear holes.
roman gods, greek gods, same gods
it covers some stuff that's relevant, and a lot of stuff that isn't
orpheus and the trojan war are in there, the creation myths are in there... the main thing is that Ovid is a poet and a later era Roman poet at that so you're not getting a greek perspective on the myths
and it's very...dramaticized?
np!
planning on getting a new laptop for college and kicking windows to the curb
debating between the xps13/15 and thinkpad t480
I'd be careful
leaning on the t480
Some college courses assume Windows
well - not completely
i'd be bringing my pc running windows
but like for my laptop, bye bye!!
and worst case, i've got the labs
That's probably fine, I got through college without a laptop, although I wouldn't recommend it
plus most CS classes actually assume unix-based systems haha, at least from the ones I've taken dual-enrollment
They do indeed, but you just know there's going to be that one class that doesn't
Or some internal website that only works in IE6
god
Putting it another way - I'm expect to acquire either Windows or OSX for mainstream support soon
fair enough
Since my current day job almost locks me out of Linux :/
it kinda depends which laptop i get and what storage option
a 1TB hdd is more than enough to dual boot for those emergency/niche situations
but if i got with anything less than a 500gb ssd (and if i get an ssd, it probably will be less than 500gb for cost reasons)
then, eh
i imagine worst case scenario just involves remote desktop or computer labs at midnight
...Apparently that's swearing
I don't think <500GB is viable for your main drive unless all you do is program
In which case it totally is
My Arch partition is 100GB total and it's fine
what was swearing? lmao
it kind of depends. I won't buy it until the summer during back-to-school sales, so I'll know the schools I'm going to by then
if the dorm footprint supports a PC, I don't expect to need said laptop to hold a bunch of junk
I could live with 256, I'd want to get to 500 because that's about how much I use up on my PC's hdd
the things that take up the most space on my drive are games anyways, and usually the massive ones that require at least some dedicated graphics card to run anyways
I'd prefer not to dual boot though honestly for hassle's sake
and the reason I'm looking at the xps line and thinkpad t-series line are the native linux support on so many of em
xps 13 you can get shipped with ubuntu 16.04 if you want, and that's probably what I'd get
most thinkpads are ubuntu certified too iirc
idk, I've still got half a year
and decisions to pray on lol
Yeah I think native Linux support is invaluable just for the drivers
Assuming they work with recent kernel versions
Otherwise you're very sad indeed
Meanwhile, I'm trying to decide how wide is too wide for ultrawide π
Did I hear ubuntu? https://i.imgur.com/2HVkVhB.png
I think Ubuntu /Mint are great gateway drugs to Linux but I wouldn't wanna use 'em
The ability to choose your own WM is invaluable
Even if almost everything else about Arch objectively sucks
I tried using linux a few times but I never really enjoyed it
My experience basically boiled down to troubleshooting errors, using the console, getting more errors when trying to install literally anything
And when it does install I realize it's the 9 month old version and I have to go to the github page to download the updated tar.gz file and manually install it
ah, linux
every 10 seconds i have a new package update
ubuntu is honestly fine, just because of the support
i run KDE on my laptop
it's kinda heavy but it looks nice and works well
like honestly? I just want the dang unix shell lol
And then people ask why people don't use linux, regardless of what version you're on it's incredibly un-user friendly
ehhhh
there are some distros that are quite user friendly
and you can very easily never be on command line
the community just isn't great at bringing people in properly lol
and then you realize that one application you want doesn't work on your distro for some reason
It's just hell, they really need to figure out something if they want regular people (i.e not CS majors) to use it
I don't think Linux is great if you don't intend to leverage the terminal heavily
But since I'm a software engineer, I'm stuck using it a ton
And Linux offers by far the best workflow around it
Yeah I can get that
any kind of programming or software work, having a unix shell is invaluable
that said, windows subsystem for linux is here and viable
WSL feels very brittle for me
I'm in a computer science college myself but eh, windows works fine
like idk I feel like most people could pick up ubuntu or mint or kde pretty easily
windows covers most use-cases better though
It's all fun and games until you realise that the networking subsystem doesn't work in some specific way and you need it to and you're just screwed if it doesn't
the people who leave windows are usually bc they need a unix shell, want more privacy, or have a foss thing
ah
yeah that sounds Not Fun β’
@split trout invest in learning to use zsh, vim, and a twm properly
It's a huge efficiency gain
god i need to learn how to use vim better
Assuming you intend to program for a living
i can get in, out, and save things
If you don't then I guess it doesn't much matter
and i remember the delete line and delete word commands lol
@mossy matrix vimtutor
that's about it
yeah i ran it a few times, kept forgetting stuff
just need more practical use tbh
Doing all your editing in it also helps π
ended up switching my default text editor over
yeah
I just want/need more experience and I'm sure I'll pick up things on the way
hmm I'll check those out, but the problem is my main programming language is C# and linux doesn't like to play well with it usually
Oh yeah, this advice does not apply for C# or Java
Just go big on Visual Studio and IntelliJ, respectively
visual studio is a treasure, man. I can't imagine using anything else tbh
hahah
I find IntelliJ better for Java than VS is for C#
but since you can't switch them around it doesn't make much difference in practice
give me some of that creativity, its unfair
:^)))))))))))))
i've been a big fan of vscode honestly
extensibility and flexibility is super nice
i don't really need a lot of the features in intellIj
after using VS for 5 years im sick of hearing "Visual" and "Studio" in any sentence combined
I can't imagine trying to develop Java without IntelliJ
The ability to autocomplete or autoimport anything on the classpath is gamechanging
Everything else I agree is pretty meh
ah yeah the auto-imports are super nice
Delayed as heck: Linux IS fairly user-unfriendly, but hoy boy does it have its uses. I've had to work with it for QA testing.
Never understood Linux, I can understand its uses or why you would use it. I use freebsd to host servers. But I never quite understood the zealotry or how people push super hard for one version of linux over another. I knew a guy who kept telling people to install Gentoo and how superior it is to Ubuntu and Debian. Or people who seem to think that Linux is miles superior than Windows: hint, it's not.
I think it's clearly superior if you use terminals or care about your window manager and worse in every other meaningful respect
BSD vs Linux is completely uninteresting to an end user, you just use whichever distribution is better supported
Not sure I'd point anyone to Gentoo though :P
please....
hello
Free game on the Epic-Games store. https://www.epicgames.com/store/en-US/product/subnautica/home
how are you guys doing?
Pretty good, how about yourself?
alright
decided to join the server cuz I've been lowkey fan of supergiant for a while
I really want to try hades but im out cash. hopefully I can play it in the future
Hhhhhh yβall the new Spider-Man movie is SO good go see it
So....funko pop vinyls am I rite xP
lol
i gotta share the stan lee display at HQ, hang on lemme find the pic-
ooo
Okay that is in weird county
I like that they are appreciating the guy seeing as a lot of their own stuff has spouted from things he's made. But o-o
i like the spider-man statue perched on the outside of the building
Something about that is kinda unnerving.
that's been there since before he died, actually! i feel like he's slightly less creepy since they added the santa hat lmao
/googles really quick for a pic with the statue in context https://www.marcieinmommyland.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Darren_Cheung-15.jpg
it'd be nice if they did this eye style on more figures instead of the black button voids https://www.marcieinmommyland.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Darren_Cheung-31.jpg
Yeah actually it would probably make all their characters a lot less weird
π
Hades got me in the mood
Anyone know some good ancient greek movies?
they could be based on real stories, myth, or fictional
mythology preffered though
though mythos seem to attract a lot of hollywood garbage for some reason
Clash of the titans, I remember that being somewhat decent
I haven't seen it in years though
remake, never seen the original, though I imagine the original would be good
the original is pretty fun if you can look past the dated special effects
the remake is crap
yeah it seems like almost every modern greek movie is total garbage
percy jackson, clash of the titans, immortals
shame, I must have misremembered or my taste in films was terrible 8 years ago π
there's plenty of good roman movies but not much for greek for some reason
disney hercules is the only decent one
yeah thats the sad part
a disney movie is the best
though troy doesnt look awful
i was 8 then
now i feel old
damn
i was in high school when it came out
also troy sucks
samesies
waste of talent
wait
not 8
10
not much of a difference lol
oh how could i forget
o brother where art thou
oh 300 is good too
for what it is
300 is fun
yeah
its like a dumb fun action flick
the other greek movies couldnt even get that right
ig im better off just playing god of war
i remember my history teacher ranting about how 300 was historically inaccurate
like
yeah
it's meant to be a story told by the survivor dude
i dont think it was ever supposed to be accurate haha
yeah, you're probably are
my history teacher said the same thing
Gosh the last time I touched Greek history was when we studied Greek vases in Classical Studies at school.
Was at least 7 years ago
but she did say she liked it
i loved the greek section of my ancient civ class
wish we delved into the gods more
mostly wars
We did a lot on the gods. I remember a huge portion of it around Alexander III of Macedon but we tended to switch it up a lot.
we did a ton on alexander the great
Only thing I was sad about was I was too sick to attend my final exam.
Vases were fun
there was a lot with Dionysus on them. And his parties.
shuffling through all of Super Giant's sound tracks to see which one fits my current writing mood

I wake up and see this
This greatly upsets me
That fact that woolie says Matt and Pat are no longer friends is what hurts the most
oh man
damn
I was wondering why Matt and Pat were playing less and less games together on the channel
@empty copper 4 hours doesnt tell alot. What was the last zone you delved into? :)
i got hollow knight for free recently and ive been super hyped to play it
Someone told me it picks up after you get the dash, but I got the dash and that was about where I stopped.
but then, yknow, hades took over my life
@fallen goblet Some one off the beaten path where everything killed me and I had no easy way out. I wish there were more instances to quick travel.
Which I understand the point is to make them scarce, but... I think that just makes the game feel claustrophobic.
Hollow Knight is so good like omg what a game
@sharp grail Lol. Me with Smash Ultimate.
I dont want to spoil the experience.
The game is supposed to feel like you are lost. Sometimes you just end up at places you dont know how to get out and that is part of the experience.
It always feels rewarding finding a way back and that is what kept me playing most of the time.
I have major anxiety and feeling lost gives me anxiety.
That is understandable.
The comparison doesn't mean anything anymore but it feels a lot like dark souls in this aspect
you are truly lost in a world with a cryptic story
Yep. The story is basically told with random texts on items, background and even dead enemies
Its really atmospheric and lonely most of the time
I understood the appeal of the game.
It just didn't hook me.
And I could never figure out why, aside from smaller things. Like it giving me anxiety.
And needing to backtrack to save or quick travel.
Imo it really goes off the charts by the time the paths opens up a little more
backtracking isn't necessary a bad thing
it's a fun exercise to create a mental map of your environment
It can be very exhausting for others
Backtracking and Metroidvania is like summer and mosquitos
Can't have one or the other seperately
Yeahhh, it depends on the person really
It's very exhausting.
And playing the game blind through the true ending is also very painful, because that means extra backtracking
White palace
@faint panther Ever play An Untitled Story?
I recall going back to the crystal cave with the slam abilities I was so pleased with myself, but yea I understand that some don't find the fun in that
dont.. mention that place
Nope
Everytime I got an upgrade I was like: "OKAY MAN.. WHAT PATHS OPEN TO ME NOW!?!?!"
I consider An Untitled Story to be the quintessential metroidvania. Which is ironic, because it's neither Metroid nor Castlevania.
And I started excitingly backtracking trying out spots I couldnt reach before
It's also tied with Bastion for my favorite game of all time.
Is Hollow Knight a platformer?
Metroidvania just means a 2D action RPG with focus on exploration
Of course.
Path of Pain
Hollow Knight is a platformer, as are Metroid and Castlevania.
That is not untrue
Not that it requires high platformer skills
It does in some places..
Just to finish the White Palace
Platformer is a very, very, very broad term.
As broad is metal or rock when pertaining to music.
screw PoP
@latent hornet Heard of it.
I wanted to play S&S but couldn't find any motivation
I did play a little bit of Salt and the Sanctuary
I really liked it
Didn't like it that much though
Same. S&S was too tedious for me
Googled it and yeah, definitely seen that logo before.
Controls felt wonky af
Controller or KBM?
By the way, to everyone here
I very strongly recommend An Untitled Story.
It's freeware for PC.
By the guy who would eventually go on to make TowerFall and Celeste.
I very strongly recommend Hollow Knight, but I'm biased, so dont take my recommendation for granted :>
It has a very small cult following.
Very small.
And nobody else has heard of it, lol.
It starts with you being an egg in a nest. And you have a world to explore. No other context is given. Or when you begin, needed.
Ahah just googled it and I already like the art
Sadly Necrodancer didnt took off. As it has amazing game design
Necrodancer is fun.
Unfortunately playing through the version with Jules' soundtrack is flipping impossible.
I got no sense of rythm
That soundtrack is done by FamilyJules, who's one of the bestest video game cover artists on all of YouTube.
But I did beat the game on the first two difficulties. Or I guess more aptly, the first two characters.
Since the second one is so much easier than the first.
same
Cadence still most fav character
also the DLC character and the DLC are amazing
The DLC has been collecting dust in my Steam wishlist for a looooooong time.
It was the soundtrack by Danny Baranowski that made me want to play the game
Probably won't actually get around to getting it unless I get into the base game again first.
Well of course.
But everyone knows DannyB.
What made me play is the concept of turn-based combat on a timer with a beat.
Who ever came up with that idea is a godly genius
You miss a beat? You skip a turn. Easy
DannyB had Jules on to do guitar for some of the songs (which he'd done for one of the Isaac games, if I recall), and Jules on his own started doing full metal versions of some of the songs, in his style. When Danny and the devs heard what he'd been working on, they decided to have him do his own versions of the entire soundtrack. So, if I recall correctly, the different difficulties actually spawned because of that.
So that's pretty awesome.
Or at least the idea of having different soundtracks for the different difficulties.
Avalugg is pretty alright
It gets more hate than it should
I mean it's definitely not the best competitively
But I'm not a competitive Pokemon player
when I stopped caring about ev/iv stats etc I started enjoying pokemon again
Yeah
have been playing through HGSS again recently in japanese and caring less about these things made it a lot nicer
The furthest I go is the occasional shiny hunt
I did a bit of competitive and did pretty good a a competition then thatβs it. I just clone all my shiny PokΓ©mon π
hey y'all does anyone know if the windbag plushies are ever returning to the store?
At the moment there are no plans for them returning. But maybe theyβll surprise us in the future

My friend stood up in his mimikyu cosplay and its terrifying
Wait, wait, @candid sparrow was he on the hoverboard and SITTING before?
Nah, he was squatting
It was killing his calves so he could only do it for 20 min at a time
Understandable.
... So was he on the hoverboard, squatting and traumatizing people?
Nah, his cosplay is actually really cute
omg that's amazing
A lot of people thought it was a robot
Yes, it is cute, and hot dang in an impressive way.
his poor legs fjdl
I hope one Mr Kasavin is looking forward to those Panzer Dragoon I & II remakes.
@junior mirage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qe2zrleCV84 I like seeing stuff like this, where the developer builds and breaks the game to a silly degree.
Rami Ismail from Vlambeer, developer of nuclear throne, spent his night sending me increasingly broken builds of the game until we took it too far. Good game...
oh dude, that's such a throwback
It is, but it's a gold standard of the hilarity I like to see done, if that makes sense?
Where you mess with the values and then see what happens.
I get what you're saying
Just throw a wrench into an interconnected system and watch the mayhem
(It doesn't help that my day job is 'breaking a software interface for an energy company.`)
(I have come in with the biggest grin on my face, going "So what's the soft memory cap on RAM for the program?")
That sounds like an awesome job
It's pretty dull at times.
But hey, it's low drama.
(And entertaining to be the typo hunter.)
Where do I sign up for software-breaking school
Look up software tester. π
Also coding and like, quality assurance. I don't have a lot of programming knowledge, I'm just prone to noticing dumb stuff.
π
Well I manage to break software at work all the time
maybe my calling is in QA
alright I need to sleep. good talking! thanks for sharing!
Maybe! Maybe do some research into it, my situation is a bit unusual as a foundation helped me get into QA.
(And said foundation is based in my city.)
And networking helps a lot.
Anyway, go to bed!
It's almost 2 am here
Almost 11 here, and I wake up at 6 am generally! (I'm weird and like starting work at 7 am.)
I'm lucky, at least. My cubicle mate wakes up earlier to get in at the same time because he has to fight traffic.
Me? It's 15 minutes away, no traffic.
(Well, 20 if I don't hit all the lights to the freeway.)
wait.. wat..???!
does this mean I could marry Persephone!?
i'm cracking up at "this husband got a little too good at ghosting his wife" djkfdsjlfasdl
I love that occasional snark from articles

slides in, that said @hasty kernel I default to ace characters in larp!
Well I am Ace (I ... think? Never really bothered to figure it all out), so yeah, I default to that too
But Id just go for that because otherwise, your bard will almost certainly try to seduce everything that moves
And probably a few things that dont
I usually don't play D&D, that's the thing.
So character classes aren't a problem.
Well, this is less of a class thing
Just the players who go for bard can be split into 2 categories
(π dnd and ace characters, my jam)
Li-
Or be a rogue multiclass
... okay, point.
I guess there is the rare third option of bards that actually want to be bards
But they are an elusive kind
But seriously, in the larp I was in, I was playing a changeling (as in someone stolen by the fae).
Usually ace is easier to bypass drama.
At least in the larps I've been in.
I always wanted to make a rapper bard with the stage name "slamminem", but A, that felt too derivative, and B, I cannot write bars to save my life
i am definitely guilty of the pun bard category
(Your mileage may vary, my non-binary, bi rear has a weird experience.)
Sven, you and me both.
That's why I went 'point.'
Speaking of puns and characters
it just feels like you have more flair w bard
My current character is "The Devils advocate"
He is literally a demonic lawyer
Representing a devil
Speaking of tabletop, I have to finish writing the charm cheat sheet for my Exalted PC.
excellent pun char
ive given up on ever being a bard because ill never be able to do it as fabulously as sam riegel
Then take a different angle.
my wizard currently has a special blink dog that looks like a giant eyeball named Pupil bc we had a pun session and i made a seeing-eye dog with "barkane eye"
For bonus points, his devil is Dis
So if someone asks "what are you up to", he can answer "Dis and dat"
One game I was a gnome swashbuckler who terrified the goliath.
all the booms
Not sure, but the point is to yell Objection with it
Excellent
is your devil's advocate also an ace attorney
that is an amazing character
Because "NOOO WHY ARE YOU RUNNING AFTER THE OGRE ZOMBIE"
Suddenly backstabbing the zombie since I'm taking him solo.
DM: "Because they specialize in that stuff."
On a sidenote, I still want to DM just so I can have a legendary dagger called "beauty"
Stuck in a beholders eye
LOL good
Same game allowed me to tell that player, after they mentioned their goliath was raised by druids: "Funny, she doesn't LOOK Druish."
my pc is a water genasi cleric who is just a rebellious teenager who went adventuring because Mom Said Not To
Oh yeah, I did DM an extremely silly oneshot once
Where one of my players was a Warlock whose pact deity was "Nyarlapothead"
He was basically Warlock Shaggy
oooo cool
i want to play trickery domain some day but i'll live vicariously through one of my players who is a trickery cleric in the game im DMing ahaha
i also have a backup character for in case they die
which is..... their mom.... :'))
oh nooo fjksld
Well, lets hope it doesnt come to that, because Im pretty sure "mom whose son died" characters are brutally OP
LOL
i don't have a backup character for one of my campaigns yet but i probably should bc i'd definitely have a permadeath unless my patron decides to bring me back a second time π
Almost "Grandma who hears you havent been eating enough" levels of OP in fact
child but yes. dont mess with the usually mild mannered mom
omg we have an elderly fighter in one of my parties and we all call her grandma
can confirm she's OP
Actually, is that a thing for grandmas everywhere?
I know its that way for slavic grandmothers
Well, that and you have to call them every day
my chinese grandma also liked to ask if we had enough food π did not have to call mine every day tho
also i have an excuse to link this yet again since were talking dnd
π
A-AWW
look at them. babies
that's adorable
a good baby
The mom would be even more op if she was latina
Because then she gets proficiency in Chanclas
i don't think we've had a group nap in our own dnd groups yet
we did have group jogging tho lol
grandma took us all jogging before breakfast and it ended up giving me and our ranger advantage on our athletics checks to escape from cultists π
Well, the only problem with my group is that Im pretty sure were never gonna be better than chaotic neutral
I think currently weve got 2 lawful evil guys, one neutral evil guy and one chaotic neutral
lol wow 2 lawful evil
Well, Im a lawyer, so that was a given
I think the other guy was some kinda gangster?
As in, member of organized crime
our dm banned evil chars for pcs bc she didn't want to deal w running that w many new players who might not know dnd etiquette yet
tho tbh our fighter toes the evil line p often π
but we have one (1) token good character in that party
Well, were all close friends, so newcomers would be from the group anyway
Funny enough, despite us all being evil, all of our characters also prefer to avoid combat
ye our group was online and we didn't all know each other v well yet when we started
Oh god, chanclas.
evil chars are fun to play! just a lot of ppl end up going the obnoxious route so i think the dm wanted to avoid that w ppl who aren't super used to rping yet ahaha
Also the start of the story doesnt involve us being very evil
Then again, the setting is that the world is lots of shades of grey
My changeling character in one game's biggest clue that he was pissed was if he removes his shoes by hand, as if he's about to lob it at someone.
im getting all my villain kicks by being a DM, i can play every alignment all at once aww yiss
The best thing about DMing/STing/GMing is getting to play all the characters you never got to play in a normal campaign
The worst thing about co-DMing is when the other DMs in the post-apocalyptic game don't let the apocalypse have been started by a group of four people calling themselves the "Camerata"
ive only played one session with my group, and when we started the dm asked all of us again whats our alignment
pretty much everyone but our paladin said Chaotic Neutral
Who were using a soul-eating sword artifact to reshape the world
"okay, is there anyone EXCEPT for zamiel who isnt chaotic neutral?"
absolute silence in the call
π
Chaotic Neutral is the worst alignment
also i suggested sneaking up on a goblin camp while holding hands and we got advantage for hand-holding. thats the power of friendship!
in my appropriately named chaos party we have...
- the one token good character, our neutral good druid
- 2 chaotic neutral characters, the moneyhoarding murder hobo fighter and the v chill warlock
- 2 lawful neutral characters, one of which was a sorcerer cop and the other was our rogue who had a magical alignment swap and used to be chaotic neutral
- and then me who is a true neutral monk
our poor poor druid
The only time its acceptable is when you roll every time you want to make a decision to figure out what you will do
So, actually chaotic neutral
I've been liking the OotS alignment explanations lately
i doubt were going to stick closely to alignments tbh because were just having fun and i personally always had trouble defining actions by alignments
oh no poor druid
There we go
Oh yeah, I gotta make a chaotic evil druid at some point
my wizard is chaotic neutral/goodish, and my warlock is lawful good bc i wanted to play him like a paladin π
I dont think lawful good Warlock really works?
except he made a pact w smth that is definitely not good and forgot about it
it's been difficult but i've been making it work ahaha
everything can work if you believe
Its mostly the whole pact thing
You dont have a choice for a good guy, as far as pacts are concerned, and if you break the pact, Im pretty sure you lose the magic?
im p sure you can still believe in smth but then do stuff against it every once in a while
you'd just be horrified w yourself π
but he's starting as lawful good bc he didn't remember he made a pact so he's been trying to be a good guy
so we're going to see how the rest of the campaign pans out and whether he can stay lawful good, which is fun to me lol
i made a pact w smth neutral so i could technically still be good
except this is a homebrew campaign so i don't think it's neutral any more hahaha
but it's ok i was going to play a hexblade at melee range so if warlock doesn't pan out
i'll swap to a martial class w the dm's permission since i have strength and dex anyways :d
i didn't neeeeed the strength and dex but the whole backstory was "whoops im magic? uh oh" so he was a jock all this time
Ah, I see
It is odd though
Paladins have an explicit way to play contrary to their usual alignment, as Oathbreakers
But Warlocks dont?
nope! so it'll be fun to rp :Dc
Well Paladins have ideals to abide by
ppl are complicated anyways, alignments oversimplify stuff a lot bc sometimes ur ideals and behaviour don't quite match up
Warlocks dont
ye
Mostly deals
depends on the patron tbh
Ye
some patrons don't really care v much e.g. archfeys lol
my patron is hexblade so like
idk what a sword wants atm but my dm will let me know, i can't wait to suffer
Old one patron is fun too
yes i want to play more warlocks some day!
they sound like fun bc the dm would ask me to do stuff i might not want to do lol
fiends and other evil patrons are probably p high on the "we definitely want you to do things for us" scale
I had a party member who made a deal with fiend to gain warlock powers
All he wanted was for the PC to party and be debaucherous
π that's hilarious
Still not sure on the name for the cultmafia
Turns out later he had a kid from sleeping around
