To top that off, some puzzles in the game introduce even harder mechanics later -- and I'm not talking about the Y-shaped thing that has you disobey a puzzle rule to resolve it

I guess you could say the same thing about The Impossible Quiz...it's supposed to give you rage, that's what the game is meant to do. Not everyone likes these kind of games

At some point you find an elevator on a beach, out of nowhere. So you get in, close the doors... the thing takes off, flies you around the island, and then with horribly detailed animations resets all of your progress, dismantling the laser beams again, undoing all the machinery you activated, closing all the doors, turning off all the lights and puzzle panels

Then it drops you back into the starting tunnel and saves the game

No warning

No story resolution

#

Nothing.

They look just like the puzzles on the panels, but they're hidden in the environment

After the game drops you back into the starting tunnel, you're supposed to solve an environmental puzzle in that tunnel to gain access to an area called the "loft" which is... just a glorified meaningless gallery

At the end of this loft (I think) waits a real-life cinematic of some weirdo running around and tracing puzzles all over his real-life house, presumed to be the developer, who must've gone nuts at some point between Braid and The Witness

the puzzles are frustrating and hardlock you out of the game's areas, there's no story to follow along with anything at all, the environmental puzzles are pretty cool, I have to admit that much but

obsession isn't a meaningless compulsion, it's a fascination

obsession isn't "you have to do this", it's "you want to do this"

and the worst part is I feel terrible for hating the game because somebody gifted it to me for its full price of 40 USD. Ouch.

as good as Braid's puzzles were, I found that what it was actually about seemed to be all over the place and offered no consistent meaning so I found the story ultimately unsatisfying, so I'd believe it if the same dev produced another game with a similar efffect

You get five save slots, but you can't copy them, there's no backups, and even your puzzle count drops back to 0 after that elevator to Gehennom itself.

I probably wouldn't condemn this game so hard if I could at least understand its stupid puzzles, but there's no reward for it besides the fact that everything was pointless because the game's going to reset your progress anyway.

Not to mention that the achievement Endgame -- which you get for beating the game by being subjected to it at gunpoint -- is only superseded by the achievement Challenge, which you gain by rushing through a mountainside and solving 13 randomly-generated puzzles within a time limit of 2:30 minutes only to unlock a treasure map of some sort that you won't be able to use anyway because the game has no concept of an inventory.

In endless the teleport is random, in story mode it's preset destinations (by random I mean random of pre-set areas that usually have some weapons, and some cover to use)

When I finished Pyre and I saw the dawn of a new day, it was quite a feeling. Hard to put into words, but I suppose I could only use positive adjectives. I found myself still invested in the story and the characters for days to follow.

When I finished Hotline Miami and I saw that it was 5:50 AM, I remember thinking to myself, "this is what being hungover must feel like". It was like the night dissipated into the blaring synths and bright neon colors, along with any memories of what the hell did I just play.

One was for their new game Firmament, and one is for buying back the rights to their own games, which are fragmented and scattered across several owners
