It is!
I've met some interesting people while working, some good, some pretty bad. I did too at conventions!
Convention Horror Stories(tm)
Although some of them are more funny than anything else. Once at Katsucon, it's about 15 farenheit outside, and the convention center decided to evacuate, because some higher intelligence lifeform put grease in a microwave and made it catch fire through microwave magicks! They had to get out the emergency blankets for a lot of cosplayers. Meanwhile I'm just sitting there at 15f in a t-shirt, and I'm like, meh, CANADA.
Reminds me of a similar case with Otakon, where a lot of attendees were thrown onto Pratt Street at roughly 95f
oh boy
I like my air conditioning
that was a fun katsu haha
I was surprised they actually had emergency blankets
One year at Magfest, which is at the same venue, the gaylord national in DC/MD, I'm not sure if it's in DC or MD. The gaylord national emergency broadcast alert sounds like it's right out of resident evil, we got woken up at, I think, about 3-4am, and we're told to take the staircase
The people who didn't shower
๐
Not only does it smell horrible, you get 3-4 of these smart people, myself included, doing the colossus roar. The colossus roar is kind of Magfest's marco polo, and when someone does it, it never ends, because there's always someone on the other end of the venue who answers.
All in all, that was a fun time
I might do magfest again next year. I don't do Katsucon anymore, a lot of things with the event just made me not go anymore. Same with Anime Boston.
Ouch
Well, it's a long way from home. It's a 10-hour drive for me plus a border crossing.
oh
@faint panther IT ME sorry i am technically at work so i had to go... do work...
Katsucon is more of a community thing. Katsucon has kind of become the defacto convention for cosplay elitism, mostly because of a lot of the locales where you can take photos, like the big inside gazebo. It used to be a meme, where if you took a photo with the gazebo, you would become "cosfamous" (Short for cosplay famous). The management with panels also has problems, a bunch of fellow panelists got screwed over at the event due to poor management.
huh. Did not know that.
I'm sure @lapis swallow knows lol
I've been absent from the scene for years since I resigned as a club moderator.
Didn't want to be one in the first place, but every group needs a Team Mom/Dad to make sure things happen and that trouble doesn't escalate too far
for me, Katsucon is just SUPER crowded now
Yea, there's also that, it's a venue that should take 10k attendees tops.
I'm thinking of switching to MAG just because generally I am more into gaming than anime so not only is it less crowded for cosplay but also more catered to my interests
Their location also sucks, eating anywhere is hell. The venue doesn't have good food, the only thing decent close is a subway, otherwise the neighborhood it's in is rich people town. Only rich people live there, so all the food is super expensive.
yeah and braving the sometimes frigid temps to eat downtown is sometimes annoying.
Yo as someone who has only ever been to a con once on a very spur of the moment thing being dragged along by a friend
Oh yea, it's super windy
spent so much time in the national pasttime lol
Also a lot of my old con mates got hit by this thing called real life, so it's very difficult for me to get rooming these days. There was also a lot of drama
OH BOY @slow lark i have some suggestions
I decided to leave the big group I was in, because I didn't want to stand by the decisions a few members of the group made.
Oooo good
AnimeNEXT which, just recently happened is a good one in NJ. it's in Atlantic City now and they recently moved to a nice bigger venue
I have no idea how Otakon is now that they've changed venues. No more ice cold water man.
A Video Game Con will be in a convention center this year but that's a nice small gaming con
AnimeNEXT got bigger again? Wow, I'm out of the loop
I liked spiral cats cosplay because even without the gazebo they just have that one door covered in smoke they all stand with that's apparently a green screen
AVGC is gonna be at the Meadowlands Expo Center in Seacaucus
I think Nekocon is a decent small sized con, it's in hampton roads, it's in the south of virginia. There's animazement which is in north carolina strangely enough. You've got Katsucon/Otakon/Anime USA around the MD/DC area
There's Derpycon which is in Morristown I think. At a hotel/convention center. Pretty small but I haven't been in a while
I think there are some conventions in pennsylvania, I think it's mostly known for Anthrocon though (I would not recommend that convention, because it's a furry convention, take that as you will, but the people running it are very nice! I like them a lot!), you've got a few new york conventions, anime boston in boston of course.
AnimeNYC will be in the Javitts Center where New York Comic Con is but it's a fraction of the crowd as NYCC
How early should one plan these things
6 months.
^^^
Okay good.
depends on if you're cosplaying or not haha
But that's just me. You want to book a hotel as close to the venue as possible. I know it costs a bit more, but it's worth it for how much you'll walk. Especially if you cosplay.
but generally hotel rates, ticket prices, etc. are available months in advance
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Even if you have a hotel room with a teleporter that teleports into the convention, your feet will still hurt at the end of the weekend.
things get expensive REALLY fast if you don't plan early
That too
Also need to find roomies unless you want to airbnb or something.
or pay a lot for hotel
I am assuming that convention-feet is much like Disney theme park feet
it is haha
remember to avoid convention plague: hand sanitizer, bring your own water, and ricola, halls, fisherman's friend
As for the reason I don't go to anime boston anymore. The police-mandated bag checks are a big reason. It's not the fault of the event sadly, the venue strong-armed it in after the marathon bombings which happened 2 streets away from the Hynes convention center. Unlike the PAX East bag checks that are run by people who are very polite, I don't know what's up with Anime Boston's bag check. It's terrible.
Also I used to volunteer for some conventions, but that gets tiring, especially with the politics and people never being happy with anything.
one day I'm just gonna get an ita bag and fill the clear section to the brim with ricola.
People come up to you and complain, but sadly, most of them are very unaware of the reality of running an event with 10k attendees or so
SNACKS ARE ESSENTIAL
if you're working at the vendors hall: not all conventions have carpet, bring slippers in case you don't have enough seats and external batteries in case things go horribly wrong
heels = pain flats = pain just find non pain shoes
Yea, I know Nature Valley bars are kind of a meme for conventions
but
get a full box of em
no one will know except other vendors who realize this is what we need to survive ;v;b
don't use their bathrooms.
The more y'all share (and i am loving all this advice thank thank thank) the more I feel like its "Plan for Disney except not"
"Plans for Disney except better"
I used to know the people who worked for Pawstars and Hendane, and sometimes they would sleep in their vans hahahaha
poor folks
"Plan for Disney except more Face Characters"
off topic channel
"Except more Face Characters" xD
In some cities, sleeping in your vehicle will bring the police
But really "shell out for on-property hotel, bring snacks, medicine, water & shoes"
plan travel ahead of time: how you're getting there and back too
Pawstars was mostly a dealers booth that would sell furry stuff to people, and Hendane dealt with huh.... COME GET YOUR YAOI COMICS slaps giant wooden paddles together
and if you're cosplaying: designing props that can travel is a mystery to me to this day o_o
The madmen
I used to build kits for people to transport their cosplay
Paddles?
Yes, yaoi paddles
No, it's just a joke that they have running
Usually the vendor next to them makes the big eyes
Beyond that, I used to bring a tackle box of first aid and cosplay repair supplies
that's genius O___O
Having extra supplies for repairs makes you practically a god
oh man, the people who brought vintage Sergers
Also, even if you're a guy, never, ever, ever room with just cosplay women in a hotel room
I know some guys might be into that
it's all metal
You'll have to wake up at 4-5am to help people with their makeup and help them put on their cosplay that is expressively designed to not be put on by one person and that they can't take off by themself.
And then you'll be done at about 10am and go back to sleep
Terrible experience, would not do again
woah that's... not cooll :/
I have seen things I did not want to see that way
... I come a family of tailors/seamstresses/embroiderers so that's not really a thing :/
makeup and wig prep take long
but clothes not being easy to put on is no goob ._.
And then you have to carry someone back to the hotel room after their photoshoot in your arms, because they're very smart and they really wanted to wear those totally not dangerous high heels, and their feet are bleeding.
I only wear terrible shoes AT the photoshoot not before. comfortable shoes til I get where I need >_>;;;;
then again... common sense is rarest sense
according to my psychology profs D:
since it's also relative to the area you're in
don't forget the bathroom/restroom horrors
Well, it's anime cons, common sense is rare at anime cons I'm afraid
some people forget to build costumes that allow you to perform bodily functions
i.e. if I'm like in Nunavut: what do in such snowy conditions = not common sense to say someone from nomadic Uighur by Gobi Dessert culture
like what do with all that sand
and vice versa
Oh my god
lol
@pastel phoenix you have to be joking
I wish I were joking
How do you
OH yeah remember to bring a small pouch of pouporri OR wear perfume/cologne on your wrist
Forget....
As for the reason I don't go to anime boston anymore. The police-mandated bag checks are a big reason. It's not the fault of the event sadly, the venue strong-armed it in after the marathon bombings which happened 2 streets away from the Hynes convention center. Also because some of the admin politics, when I stopped going, it got really bad.
I have had to build funnels for people who got "trapped" to put it mildly
Eugh
I remember when fanexpo had the signs: Good Hygiene is essential
... the smell was less bad that year
I've been thinking about investing in the disposable face-mask things for, like, colds and stuff
sars masks
do it
I mean i have some pretty harsh dust/dustmight allergies anyways
nice
So it would probably behoove me to have them anyways
so mask would keep ur allergies awayy
And you can also drop a few drops of menthol in them
And not have to smell anything else for the next 10 hrs
Anime cons also get boring over time, because most of the events are hosted by amateurs who can't hold a high school-level presentation together, like panels.
Especially if you don't involve yourself in cosplay or some other thing
I mean, it's probably not fair to judge them that way since I make terrible youtube videos but
I mean, I'd probably be more interested in gaming-based cons and stuff regardless
but my terrible videos are probably better than their panels, so that's something
I can list all the anime I've watched on one hand?
Gaming conventions tend to be far more focused experiences
I haven't been to those panels ._. or any panels at conventions other than TCAF the Toronto Comics Arts Festival because they get panelists from artists, novelists, mangaka, comics artists, game devs... plus it's the only free convention I know of .... their panels range from dude that created evangelion to former hostess turned mangaka to artists for like DC and marvel too... and my literary profs entertaining new narrative formats emerging with digital mediums etc.
People go to magfest to go get drunk, play free arcades, and hang out with drunk internet celebs.
Naruto, Binan Shoujo Nozaki-Kun, the magical boy parody anime, little witch academia (if that counts), and... one punch man?
People go to pax to visit the expo, where developers showcase their games, or sell wares
Ah, a toronto person
How's your parking lot anime convention?
you mean the initial D car modding people
I don't know if they still meet at Pacific Mall
or have moved on to Itasha car decals o__o;;;;
Anime North is always a convention that sticks out to me because of its weird layout, the convention is held in many buildings, separated by a bridge, so people tend to hang out in the giant parking lot around the biggest building
OOH
Hence why people tend to refer to it as the parking lot convention
I work indoors for Anime North
so I tend to not go outside
I used to help friends out in artist alley
and other buddies that work in the vendors room @_@;;;;
I didn't even know it's called parking lot convention
@_@
I stopped around 2 years ago due to health problemsX_x
Not counting travel/stay/food/ticket expenses, what are budgets people do for
I guess merch and stuff?
Yea, for me it's mostly me dropping out of a big con group due to internal drama, and the people left to room with ended up not being able to go to cons much anymore
I guess it's a two-part story thing, if you ask them, they'll tell you they kicked me out for reasons, and if you ask me, I'll tell you I left for other reasons
Overall it was a mess
Fiorinol I dipped the second year cuz of similar reasons o_o;;;;
my health is goob now! but not even sure if there's a group for AN next year lol....
I was supposed to room with some people who ended up not going
they were mad at how Square Enix handled the Final Fantasy TCG tournament
Especially with how Quebec is excluded for, well, no reason other than SE being lazy now.
awww Quebec be where the game devs at tho ;A; how could they exclude our industry!?
SE doesn't want to bother with the paperwork or the new laws
omgg
I don't know, I live in Montreal, and I think the indie game dev scene is somewhat of a hellscape right now
Wait there's a final fantasy tcg?
Yea
Is it good?
Ah
it's relatively okay in Toronto (indie) but our AAA industry is Quebec tho ๐ฎ so it's surprising to me that SE would fail to accommodate to Quebec O_o
The AAA industry is in another sphere than indies
It's difficult to explain why Montreal's indie scene is terrible without getting into the politics of it, and that gets awkward very fast. It's also an odd subject to approach, because if I throw it on Youtube, it'll be like...
throwing a bleeding body at the sharks
Won't fix anything either
at least in terms of mobile games
like alpaca evolution
welp polish until it be goob >:B
no one starts running
we all began our lives crawling
as long as devs keep at it, I believe they'll make something lovely sooner or later o_o
I can't imagine a first iteration being perfect D:
Of course, there's always people that will make good games, but from querying people quite extensively, quite a few devs decided to take a step back from the "community" and just work on their stuff themselves in private. Usually you want to go in game devs groups, because you want to hang out with people that will make you grow, or motivate you, not people that will pull you down.
It's a complicated issue
like
my friends at 13AM games are like that too
like start with making something you genuinely want to play yourself
and even for global game jam last yr it was like theme was waves
we decided to make a goofy game about danny devito lubing up the world with hand sanitizer, WAVES of it
Video games are the "hot" thing that everyone wants to say they're involved into, so you get a lot of people, who, IMO, shouldn't be in these groups. They want to do everything through video games.
And that's a very divisive opinion to hold
like we grow all our lives, our brain chemistry changes everytime we learn something new, it's hard not to grow. and if ppl leave groups behind to work and learn on their own, good on em
all sorts of things motivate ppl to play games and make games
It reminds me of a story from, I think it was Edmund McMillen, talking about the original indies from Xbox Live Arcade, who would mostly hang out on a Skype group, and it got toxic as the number of people grew, because not all of them could be successful anymore, and jealousy took roots very quickly.
hmm welp if success is the goal instead of fun
then that's a problem
xD
I mean it's good to be able to pay the bills, but for one thing I admire Supergiant Games because they create great games and seem like a lovely group of devs who make something different each time they release something
That's another part of the problem I suppose. Fun is good and all, but hanging out with people who make games in Twine, most of these games are very unimaginative, and I know in a lot of game dev groups nowadays, they scorn people who look down on Twine games, it doesn't make me grow as a creator. If I can rig something in OpenGL from scratch, the skill level is very different.
Even if Pyre got delayed for additional time, I'd know that it's cuz they value making something fun and up to a standard that they won't compromise on.
I guess I didn't really hang out with bigger community of game devs, just a few indies here and there
then again I don't exactly hang out with them to make games, more like : another ramen place opened up, wanna go? or ghibli movie in theatre, let's go!
in terms of learning to dev games at post grad, my classmates are collaborators and English and French aren't everyone's first language xD so there are problems with communication sometimes. But seeing each other face to face and sketching out what they mean sometimes solves problems
it's easy to generate tons of ideas, it's hard to execute it in a fun form @_@
This is when I'll bridge into the politics a bit. Imagine if instead of making Braid, Jonathan Blow made a game where it's text on a screen that tells you very overtly "Wow, here's a thing that goes on in society that I don't like, thing is bad", it's not very interesting, nobody would have played Braid. And the person in the group somehow gets congratulated for doing that. If you go to one of the professional art studios in this city, and they teach you how to draw, they have industry veterans who teach you how to draw from life, and they won't shy away from telling you that something in your drawing's bad or uninteresting.
I think what drives me nuts is the complete lack of imagination, or framing. It's like part of modern art, go any traditional artist, and they'll tell you how much they don't like modern art.
I guess I lucked out with graphic novel art courses that they quite liked that modern fellow Duchamp
because his art was things that makes him laugh
actually if he was a live, I'd imagine he'd make butt jokes with VR technology
I took an East Asian Female Icongraphylast 200 years course to teach something similar: if you want your art showcased in the west, paint the women with French women's bodies. Because our ideal of Pear isn't good enough. They prefer Hourglass and long legs.
Korean plastic industry, Japan's Final Fantasy 12's remodelling of Ashe are examples this is
200 years worth of fitting some non-realistic ideal
=_=;
I think the basics in the other art courses I took were like : learn to draw from real life, and then when you graduate stylize it however you want. :/
Instead of just having a white on black text that says "Inequality is bad!", how about you make a universe, with characters I can get invested in, interesting things to see and experience. Games like Papers, Please and Cart Life have very strong opinions about certain subjects, but they don't just write it out on the screen.
One of the more ridiculous things is that Robotnik is pro industrialization and mechanization via ford assembly lines versus Sonic who is a naturalist fighting for the freedom to be organic and round
it's naturalism vs mechanization
but it's so subtle
It's hard to say that I enjoyed Papers, Please but it was a fantastic game I spent a lot of time playing
It's a very odd game.
I haven't heard of it ๐ฎ googling it noww
Cart Life is somewhat of an unfinished game, the aesthetic is very odd, and it's not exactly a fun game to play. The game doesn't tell you what to do at all, and one of the characters you can play is this immigrant who doesn't speak the local language very well, only has a cat he's not allowed to have in his apartment to keep him company, and you need to find him a job, I believe the first thing you find is a job holding a paper stand, and you need to do all the menial actions to run the stand.
It's a game with a very troubled development
Guys
This server has made me the happiest horse on the planet โค
I like to think I had nothing to do with that!
games that confuse me: noby noby boy, death stranding.
I think death stranding will either soar or drown
And if it drowns, it's going to be fondly regarded 10-15 years after release.
I want to play it but I don't know if I will ever truly understand
what do you guys think it's about? xD
The trailers so far are pretty self-explanatory. You can figure out a lot of what's going on.
We already know that Death Stranding takes place after some cataclysmic event. Whether the event is the timefall, the floating figures, or something else, that we're not sure about, my guess is going to be that some phenomenon occurs wherein some group tries to take advantage of it, likely related to the floating figures, it goes wrong very quickly, something along those lines, anti-war messages aren't uncommon in Kojima's games. Sam making deliveries of we don't know what will play into this, we do see him carrying what appears to be a body at some point. The concept of time will play into it as Sam's character has a HIDDEN DARK PAST (League of Legends(tm)), and his delivery jobs will drag him into whatever conflicts there are.
I think the game will have permanence elements online. Kojima seems to imply strands as in co-op more than once. I think other players will be able to leave craters on your map, as when the shadow figures grab you into the other dimension, it leaves a crater behind.
Another guess is that the characters in DS will have been alive for a very long time, they are stuck in a state of permanent limbo.
Sorry about that

@velvet void
Yo
how do you feel about the aot manga
I like it a lot, prob one of my favorites along with Berserk, Vinland, and Vagabond
The way Eren character has developed throughout was what really got me invested, especially with the new arc
From typical shonen protag to anti-hero cool guy*
Good stuff

@tropic garden the real struggle will be finding work ๐ค

Oh you'll be pretty close to me then!
Yeah....work's tough
I thought moving to a metroplex I'd have an easier time finding work, but not really xD
They had that big quake recently too, of course all that will be fixed up by January
yeah friends of mine having a hard time
Finding work, the endless struggle
Trying to find development work, will fall back to english teaching if I have to
yuh it's expecially hard in Japan isn't it?
@chilly briar I imagine you could maybe find some remote stuff, or is the cost of living too high?
Everywhere I look, people are having a hard time.
I don't have N2 so can be harder, should really sit that exam already
@fleet sail maybe, I have a work visa already but might setup some contracts back in NZ to keep me going
I'm like a soft N3 which is all I need in daily life
Yeah that sounds like a safer bet, good luck! There are some decent remote freelancing options there too if youโre stretched thin and have extra time
I wish you all on your endeavors

@tropic garden come study when i'm there and be an N2 pro ๐

I am, actually!!
SO GOOD
Just a quick ferry ride across the bay

I've been meaning to spend some more time in wakayama, haven't done much there, went to sakai a few times since friends live there
Ultimately it's a hard prefecture to get around without a car
We have trouble forming a community here because we're so spread out
I mean, Nachi is gorgeous, but it's four hours away and 5000 yen on the EXPRESS train!!
I'd love to go there again but it's just so expensive and so far.
Yuasa is a cute little town though.
Yura-cho just to the south has the temple that first invented soy sauce
So they claim
Yura is also close to Shirasaki cliffs, which are beautiful
You can see Shikoku from the observatory there
I drove to amanohashidate, tottori, ine, etc
Must've been nice orz
Nachi is still far but with a car at least it's comfortable
Koya-san is ofc the must see in Wakayama
๐
oh they did add an off topic, yisss
now you can talk about all your pokemon cards!
speaking of cards
I really want to get into the Fire Emblem Cipher stuff
but it looks hella hella complicated

jsut a little xD
https://puu.sh/AMEmy.png soz...
it s no problem but this server gets pretty flooded as is ,, so might wanna tone that down
I mean, I do it a lot, too, so I really have to try to tone it down myself xD
same hat, huh...?
looks sick
Aww thank you guys โค
You gonna get a small quadrotor for the floaty robot thing?
cuz you need to
Sound like hell, but would look great in photos
I can do that
I haven't planned to but I definitly can
that would be a lot of effort but would look really cool
I mean I haven't even got to work on the glowing parts (im gonna make the helmet with LEDs, and also the sword and that gem thingy that he has) and I'm kinda afraid to do it
that s gonna be tough
But I can do it :3
dude nice....
i have the sweater my friend got for me, it really goes good with anything
It's really become my favourite game although SGG will always be my favourite game company, that I aspire to be like them
man i cant agree with you more.... do u just ever agree with someone so much and it makes you so glad??
Yes! I love when it happens
drift compatible

Hyper Light drift compatible, to make the pun more obvious
I'm probably gonna post progress on Twitter when I'll have it
pfft
The gun is just laying on my desk unpainted
What is ur twitter so i can do the follow thing
My brother and I have been playing Wizard of Legend recently, and all it does is making me want to play HLD, but I don't want to because it would probably give me more practice than him
@alt_drifter
Ah
@wanton brook i barely know you for 2 seconds and i already love you
SAME??? im so glad i signed up for emails and joined this server
SAME.
So um i gotta get ready for work, but luckily i can chat from there so...see you guys in about 40 mins lol
Welp, Probably going to be out $50 soon https://www.fangamer.com/products/hyper-light-drifter-hoodie

๐
i hope so too
though actually im gonna miss my coworkers they're gr8
and also grad student pay is less than my current paycheck
by lots :c
oof
Grad students get pushed around terribly
Our grad students tried to unionize, with some success
But aaaanyways
That would be interesting
Paycheck logic?
i didn t know how to word that so i just made it short for โpeople with more education getting paid lessโ
is that they... cover tuition
Oh well that is quite nice
i wouldnt be going if they didnt tbqh
So it's just a living expenses paycheck
:/
ouch
feelsbadman
It willbe worth it
Oh no
because those three letters may very well double/triple my paycheck AFTER
but like... that will be after HOPEFULLY ONLY FIVE years
Yah
Hmm i don't think it's worth it
I dont wanna do a phd....anthro phd is like. 7-10 years
i would say in most fields its not worth it
I already have my MA, i dont need anything more
That's why I'm gonna make my own game <:
in chemistry it makes a huge difference tho. And if i ever want to to govt. laboratory work (which is A Yes) i ... need those three letters
weba @short wyvern
Ah? I'm going back to uni. Community college ain't cutting it
community college is good for knocking out prereqs tho
Community college dev isn't cutting it. Only jobs I can find are abusive agile/jira shtick with high turnovers or crazy startups that don't work. Changing fields too
Hmm I've seen too many people who go this path and I wouldn't want to do this, it's very tiring
Which path? Going back?
These jobs i mean
It's either this or starting my own crazy startup, but sadly I ain't a millionaire like all the people I worked for
this is a lot more people than I expected to find here this soon
If you mean the jobs, tons of initiative to push people into tech. As far as I'm concerned, it's a giant crater of misery. The computers can code themselves.
We're good people
i was here 1-2 days ago and now thereโs almost 1000 members?!
We announced it in our newsletter today, Blast!
So it got to a much bigger audience! Though I'd personally encourage you to stick around, even if it's just through lurking. โค
yeah i saw that! but i was already here by... somewhat illegal means hehe
Basically I think that you can either go the path that a lot of people take or take your own, and the latter is very difficult but rewarding
In every field not just tech
thank you omg <33 iโll definitely lurk but i donโt know if i have it in me to participate
Hey its ok ^^
I totally get that! Big numbers in a server can be intimidating. But you are always welcome, even if it's just to pop in & add a reaction to things.
Time for ETERNAL SEPTEMBER
That's so true
Aw thank you! I'm very familiar with the intimidating Discord feel.
that's mine, no stealy
I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE YELLING ABOUT
when u yell real loud to express your feelings, THATS AMORE!!!
I DO NOT RECOMMEND YELLING
surprised there's not voip channels tbh
caps lock is cruise control for cool
that s because VCโs are hard to control
very
we had one but SGG staff got it removed
oof
@short wyvern IDK, tech has become very difficult. It reminds me of the whole Hearthstone Arena tracker thing. Two guys wanted people to work on their lightforge thing, and so many people tripped on top of each other to offer to make their app for free, that they pretty much went on Twitter to state that "people would work for free", of course that comment was met with a lot of disgust from the general community at large.
So was this like, an unofficial fan server that ended up getting absorbed into SGG?
Everyone has an app for every little thing and it's become insane.
Nope! Fan server is still up, running, and active! Though the member list does crossover.
Oh i didn't know that happened
this one is fresh and 100% official
I used to use deck tracker
It's not deck tracker, it's some other thing for arena
i just spent a couple minutes trying to think of an app that was too ridiculous but I couldn't
everything has a market
You make me wanna go back hearthstone lol
Its not any better
I've seen a company that makes an app for renting private space and they want to "be like airbnb", that's their business plan.
Too bad there's just almost no demand for this thing
Hey hey, a little late but glad you feel welcome starling!
Like, my first thought was, "Are there apps to help me brush my teeth" and yeah, there probably are
It's like if I made an incredibly niche video game and my business plan was "be like supergiant games". Pls. No.
probably an IOT toothbrush too
That's no plan
Anyway about sgg being nice, i couldn't agree more
When i needed help with realizing how Jodi works for my cosplay I sent them an email with tons of queations and Michael did everything he could to help
After I finished it and sent them the pic in my profile, Michael reacted well so I was really happy
THERE IS IN FACT AN APP TO HELP YOU BRUSH YOUR TEETH
@serene tulip it pairs with one of the Oral-B electric toothbrushes
lol
i know this, because this is the ad on my microsoft solitaire suite that crashes the program 60% of the time after it plays
My only direct interaction with SGG is that darren once favorited a tweet of mine >.>
and this, of course
I love Darren haha
it is my last week of work and i am doing reactor-scale chemistry
And when it comes to gaming, people will throw themselves at your feet to do stuff for free. That was a thing for me in college, it's like nobody had any hobbies but video games. I go to conventions and that's all I see, a lot of people who only video games. They breathe video games, they eat video games probably, and they sleep video games. Everyone wants to be video games for some reason, because that's all they do with themselves.
i am playing a lot of solitaire
Very strange conundrum
Basically me @solemn sierra
I love vidya games but i dont know if i could
do it 4 job
that seems like a way to get myself to hate what i love
Mayhaps that may sound a bit hypocritical coming from someone with a video game avatar in a discord server about video games.
M a y h a p s
That's perfect
I mean, most gamemaking isn't really analogous to gaming.
Game making has nothing to do with gaming, and there are tons of people who want to be idea guys.
i mean. same hat @solemn sierra
Most writers still probably read, because enjoying a thing and making it are very seperate
idk, game programming seems fun to me, although my exposure to it is only a couple things:
- 3D computation paper at my university, ray tracing, opengl 2 & 4, shader programming etc
- little bit of unity
- little bit of unreal
Can't decide which to explore more, fairly familiar with c++ but prefer c# as a language ๐ค
I feel like I would actually enjoy the "putting stuff together" part of game design but the barrier to entry feels absurdly high and it's not something I want to devote my life and all my free time to, + bad workplace conditions and bad pay
Sooo I just write about games instead
yea, there are tons of people on itch io or whatever that website's name is
I have way more interest in developing and playing things I make than playing things others make these days, since one helps me learn more and one doesn't. I tend to only play stuff these days in social settings, otherwise it's study or dev time
or working
It's like the people who think they'll be the next pewdiepie or something. Chances are, 10000 other people thought the same thing
I feel like playing things others have made could be extremely educational
It's not like writers only read their own writing, or painters study their own paintings
But I don't know, I throw out a video ranting about stuff and it gets 10k views for some reason. To the point where I have an existential crisis because I can't believe 10k people would view even a minute of this.
It is, but also I've spent a lot of time playing things in my life and feel like i'm familiar enough with the things i'm looking for to find them if I need them
like design decisions, engineering choices, etc
I'll probably keep tinkering with unity projects after I finish my current react-native project lol (which is super mundane but hey helps me learn the framework)
good night oceloctopus
night!
I think I'd like to make a game or a fangame some day? but like
as a total personal project with no intention of marketing it
I worked with my ex on a game so i know a bit of unity (i was the artist and he was the programmer, i didnt HAVE to know it but i do) and c# but i really wanna make my own game so i gotta learn programming basics at least.
I think maybe game maker will be easier than unity for 2d games, i dont wanna make 3d
@chilly briar
Knowing myself, I'd probably make something controversial just for the sake of it being controversial. Or maybe dabble in the occult or something.
I'll collect people's reactions
and put it all in the box
I'll do like your aunt probably does with shoes
@short wyvern consider exploring the new version of game maker studio too, that's what my university does for it's production degree (game focussed etc, but i'm just a filthy computer science & japanese major lmao)
but it won't be shoes!
You also need to know how to be critical of the games you play, not just love or hate them endlessly @tropic garden
i love pyre trna endlessly
@solemn sierra shock humour etc really doesn't do it for me tbh
I thought making a video to rant about Pyre for a while, and also another video complaining about someone's video complaining about xenoblade chronicles 2 but the video is 50 minutes and a reply would take 2 hours
Because i atted you
Yes I see that, I'm wondering what that was a response to ๐
To your last reply lol
@chilly briar No, it wouldn't be shock humor, just something to get under people's skins ever so slightly.
no one told me I can't read
SORRY
I like what Pyre was doing but it didn't affect me like Transistor or even Bastion
but yeah that sounds like a lot of fun
i d go hunting and killing things
Nah, I've got a lot of bad things to say about it. The problem is, the way I come out about things is sandpapery and I have this problem where half my audience doesn't seem to understand whether something I say is sarcasm or not.
um i mean shooting cans
It gets weird
@tropic garden really? It's been getting to me so far, haven't beaten it yet though
But when you have to explain the sarcasm or a joke, it's not a joke anymore
I know, its really emotional for a lot of people but it just never really reached me
@faint panther are you in a place where you can't? It's super fun to try I think. I wouldn't pay to OWN any really, too expensive, but just to pay for a shooting outing is worth it!
yeah !!! im in the middle of the city
@tropic garden bastion made me legitimately cry, transistor REALLY got to me emotionally, but I don't think I cried, just maybe a tear or so
i don t think i want to own guns either โ
@faint panther I spend WAY too much on my computer and phones to afford that haha
hey bro same ,, but hunting sounds real fun
i have one in my pocket as we speak
Transistor made me cry a little, Bastion didn't do much for me because the combat distracted me from the story up until the very end
it is an water gun
@solemn sierra I can't read and thought #supergiant-games was offtopic lol
We're going to take out the guns with my hunting rifle
then we're going to take them home
and skin them
I still think Bastion is their best game
only thru the water gun... do you learn true marksmanship...
it s where you start and end
saba do you remember
I personally think Transistor is the best if only bc Bastion lacks some polish
hahaha
I need to replay Bastion tho
bastion is so ๐
do you remember when I photoshopped red to tariq
I preferred bastions gameplay, but trnaโs aesthetic
YEAH
WHERE I END AND WHERE SHE BEGINS
SAME HAT
Pyre is ambitious but less cohesive overall
bastion and transistor are different in an odd way for me, I find bastion to be really easy by default, whereas transistor is very difficult
Yea, I'd definitely harp on Pyre's cohesion
DO YOU WANT ME TO... DIG IT... IRIS, ,,
JUST A MOMENT IRIS
Dig everything shameful that I did from that server
YESโM
Criticism as a creator is very odd. If 5 people come up to you personally and tell you how much they like what you make, you kind of appreciate it, but when thousands of people online tell you what you make is great, it kind of feels like floating in a sea of nothing
I missed huge plot points in Bastion bc the hectic pace of combat made it hard for me to listen to rucks ;;;
It's like eating way too much cake that it ends up not tasting anything
really? weird, it didnt happen to me
don't do that
wow that's so weird Ven because I felt the opposite
Bastion caught my attention so much and it was really immersive for me, Transistor was even more immersive but somehow I didn't really get a lot of points
I'm definitly gonna replay Transistor and Pyre soon
A lot of that depends on personal game history and skill I'd imagine
I used to suck at real time combat, it took all my attention just to not die. It stressed me out a lot
Transistor gave me time to breathe that Bastion never afforded
I hated that about Bioshock too
80 unlistened to audio diaries and no safe place to listen to them
Because splicers attack you constantly and regen wherever you go
hmm i have super great reflexes so even if i was stressed, i could manage to play effectively
[sorry to cut the convo]
hey iris i think... most of your pinned stuff is gone... i went through half of the channels and nothing s there ๐ฐ
BUT I FOUND THIS https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/336788183859593217/372640379494858752/Tariq-Red_where_I_end_and_where_she_begins.png?width=152&height=663
hahaha yes! thats it!
iconic
why
you can have my tank
ok now we need an ou
i usually need it for you know, war and stuff
anyone's seen an ou?
๐ พ ๐บ here ya go
now iris s masterpiece is properly appreciated
I remember that I had the idea and immediatly went to photoshop like I GOTTA DO THIS SO FAST
and the lyrics fit
that just made it even better
popped in here to see what off-topic topics were being discussed/what had continued from #supergiant-games channel. and I just want to say, I love and appreciate you guys โค
I was originally going to do something much different with my night. I just got home from work and was going to burrito on the couch/play a mobile game. But instead I checked my email, opened the latest blast from Supergiant, downloaded the wallpapers, joined this Discord. Now here I am, listening to the Transistor soundtrack for the billionth time
(I write a lot. So I'll go back to reading/lurking)
I think I see some similar pattern here
It's very nice to be here although it wasn't my original plan
To get suddenly immersed in the Supergiant community
It feels nice to... I don't know, to share all this in some sense
aaaa I still have to get all the soundtracks
despite Spotify existing, I want to throw money at these guys
ALL OF IT
I'm only missing the Pyre vinyl. I have the limited Bastion vinyl set and the one for Transistor.
Same here!
I love having physical copies of the music I really care about
(I still have to find something to listen to them though x))
I'm not even sure what vinyl is, nor would I be sure how to use it
wait @ocean gull , you and I are 2 of 200 for the Bastion one? ๐ฎ
... .-. It seems so, was the vinyl only 200 copies limited edition? Now that you mention it I remember having jumped on the offer...
yeah, it was announced and quickly went. they were red vinyls and came with one piece of sheet music signed by the man himself, Darren Korb โค
I got the first page of Mother, I'm Here
wow
Ooooh, no, I think I only have no-limited edition
ah
Sorry ๐ฆ
okay, so since I'm here and you guys probably actually know what I'm talking about
That's soooo great * _ *
still amazing though.
imagine Darren Korb and Gareth Coker working together to score one game
(The first page of Mother I'm Here)
(I know, right? I almost cried when I saw that's the one I got....or maybe I did cry. Who knows)
Sadly I don't like the song too much
MUCH prefer Build That Wall
mother, I'm here gives me depression
watch yo profanity
beat me to it saba
well, off to play pyre
enjoy
I'm becoming sleeeeepy
I think it's this last hour of being awake, when my brain starts to go numb, and becomes just plainly happy to find people, meet people, discover people, who chat, create, invent, write, draw, craft, share about these marvelous worlds along with their very makers. Sometimes I'm just amazed by humanity.
I love you, humans who have gathered here, wherever you are
i love you fellow human

What they said, I love you fellow humans
We are all love SGG server
We all become one, as they say
SGG created a really peaceful fandom
Oh we all, we all become one...
welp i gotta go get ready for work,,
Hey just a note when saba and voyage were typing i read it as "booby voyage" but with the accent of "bon voyage"
:p
"several people are typing..."
