The game has its own internal scaling on top of that - once you get to pick your opponents, every subsequent round against a team sees them refine their skillset and whatnot.

@steep sun We're happy to answer questions like that. In Bastion's day you strictly needed a publisher to release a downloadable game on a console. We really wanted our game to be on the Xbox 360 and we found a willing partner in Warner Bros.
Like each of our games since, Bastion was self-funded, though WB enabled us to get it on console and supported us in other ways, e.g. giving us a strong presence at E3 and PAX East.
We're an independent studio and want to learn how to do every aspect of game making so when it came to Transistor, we decided to try and self-publish, since that became an option by that point.

We still have a great relationship with WB and everything, and it's really just about wanted to stay as independent and self-sufficient as possible.
@steep sun That's a complicated question. Short answer is yes, it's hard. But it's the right choice for some smaller developers given the state of things these days. For other developers, partnering with a publisher is a good idea. Really depends.
@sturdy oasis It's definitely different in some ways, though having a good publishing partner is key for many mobile games. I'm not as close to that side of things anymore -- it's a really fast-moving world. We self-published Transistor for iOS though and that worked out well enough for us, I think partly because the game had already earned recognition on other platforms.

Yeah, right on...! Digital distribution and self-publishing is really what enabled smaller studios like Supergiant to happen at all. The market is tough since players have so many choices but on the other hand it's technically never been easier to publish a game.

@steep sun These days yeah, the Switch is an excellent platform in general. We have our own tech and tools so it's not as simple as one would hope to bring our games over to it, though haven't ruled anything out either.
Personally I'm glad the system's been so well received and really like it, as someone who's been playing games on Nintendo consoles for most of my life (along with other consoles and computers too).

@steep sun It's hard to say, and I'm not an engineer either. I think it really depends on the game and other factors. Mobile is tough as a catch-all too since there are a million different devices and stuff....

Yea, I'm no amazing developer either, but I can confirm what Greg says, mobile is incredibly annoying to port anything on, especially with your own rendering engine, because there are tons of phones, a bunch of them are hiDPI too, so not only do you have to render more pixels for a certain estate, but this can cause a lot of problems in the performance department.
The wildly different screen sizes makes designing an interface very annoying, more than on desktop

IDK how it is nowadays, but the Wii U SDK was very difficult to work with.
And you have all the time it takes. Asking for the SDK, getting the SDK, reading the documentation, figuring out how to implement it, testing it extensively, sending it off to Nintendo for approval, waiting forever, having it sent back being told X or Y doesn't work, fixing it, sending it back, waiting forever again etc...
Now don't tell Reggie I said it takes forever to get approved, I don't want his terminators at my place.
