it's not that certain people "become demons" and others don't, it's just that some people don't survive long enough in the downside to start the process
it is variable how long it takes to start, and how rapidly it proceeds once it has started (personally I think it's a matter of that Hope stat), but I think any human in the Downside has the potential to become a demon
technically speaking i want to say anybody not native to the Downside can undergo a similar process. obviously that's not canon i just ... want it to be true

and in case of betrayal, the traitor just dies a terrible death

so if there are multiple copies of the book of the rites, it is possible that in case this approval was forced rather than consensual, any team including the Nightwings could just splinter off and get a spare book, possibly from the two figures overlooking the Rites from the Downside
rather than self-fixing, it's more like it has 50+ backup plans or something, to reduce any long term corruption
but it won't get fixed unless the participants decide to, the Scribes planted the means to fix but the people need to pick them up and do it
so I agree at least partially with Bird's theory that the Scribes expected corruption and planted sort of self-fixing measures (I can't say it's exactly that though) in the very design of the Rites

Thank you for the Pyre birthday wishes!! For funsies here's a bit of the recording script for Volfred, with the English, Sahrian (our constructed language), and phoentics.
I never took the time to put together all the details I had on Sahrian in a presentable format, and think the language is ultimately more compelling when you can't see the many limitations that the info I have on it would reveal.
But this is basically how we did the scripts for each of the speaking characters -- some key phrases in English with a certain mood, then 'translated' into Sahrian. In-game, I would sometimes match the voice exactly to the writing, but usually just choose the quips that had the right feel for the moment.
