as long as everyones having fun it doesnt matter, but its better to have a game supporting you in what you want to do and youll potentually have more fun doing that

safe adder
#

it doesn't have to be dnd. I just meant a tabletop rpg in general.

civic birch
#

I think the Powered by the Apocalypse system is good for collaborative storytelling, and fairly simple

old breach
#

apocalypse world raw is a bit hard on new players but some spin off ptba systems could work, my advice would be similar to SableGear and try out Fate Core. shop around based on what you have in mind (and can find online reasonably)

civic birch
#

Oh yeah ive never played apocalypse world

#

Just spinoff systems

safe adder
#

I've played the Cypher System, that's really streamlined

pure bluff
#

so, there's actually one person, @rare garnet (btw sorry for pinging) whom has actually designed a tabletop-esque pyre game in #fan-works , so you can just look them up in the search section of discord (or just DM them in general, since they own the document with it)! @safe adder @torn bolt
unfortunately this peticular channel doesn't allow sending in pictures, so you'll have to search the thing for yourselves

rare garnet
#

Oh yeah! That campaign I made is finished now, the group I was playing with let one of their favorites of the other teams go free after they won the last game of the Final Set (before the rites fade). It was really fun!

#

There's a lot more to that system that I still haven't posted. Maybe I should post some more of it.

torn bolt
#

👀

#

oh please do

#

i'm curious, were you playing a game as the nightwings during the last cycles of the rites?

rare garnet
#

No! I took some liberties in the narrative, and spun it away from the 'Reader' perspective. A lot of Pyre's design is focused on a singular entity (the reader) having a lot of control in the fates of a bunch of close friends, so I pitted this version of the rites without the concept of the nightwings/reader. Instead of a single character/caravan acting as an absolver, I instead focused on how they each came together before seeking freedom from their exile.

#

The two times I played this campaign, I was also playing for groups that had never witnessed the game itself, so I kept characters/narratives/teams out of my game, for the sake of hopefully inspiring them to play the game it was inspired by in the process.

#

I've got eight files/pages of my initial Pyre DnD campaign. I worry about clogging up fan works, though... One moment.

placid cosmos
#

you could make a google drive?

rare garnet
#

Yeah! Just cleaning it up a bit. I threw in some extra information about the Classes that some of my players chose. I like to work out what each of my players are looking for out of their characters and I provided a quick overview of some of the Class Skills they received as they progressed. There was also an upgrade system to skill checks and other bonuses that was implemented, but that document is far too messy for me to share.

Okay, so that, 'All Never to returns at once thing,' in the parts where everything is indistinct really gets me, because that's probably what it, in universe, sounds like to everybody but Volfred and the Reader. And that's hitting me hard.

young folio
#

yknow I feel like true nightwings is this super hardcore mode that only a few people do so I feel bad for like, getting the achievement for completing it by losing every match

onyx oar
#

well, from what I remember reading, that's kind of the point, that people would automatically pull the plug whenever they "failed" and so they needed something to push people to accept they could fail

#

and even, in fact, if they failed all the time, they could accept that and move on

#

so not so much a "super hardcore" mode as "here's an incentive to stop save scumming, ya nudnik"

vestal bluff

There’s a speed running tactic that involves just that lol

Reach out: ||You reach out to Oralech’s mind with your sweet Reader Skills and just... be there in his head. He thinks it over and willingly decides to offer you his chance at freedom. You can take it and be liberated or refuse and let him be liberated.||
Let him decide: ||You don’t reach out. Oralech decides to take his shot at liberation and goes free.||
Manipulate him: ||You use your Reader Skills to basically mind control him into giving you his freedom. You go free, and Oralech, knowing his freedom was stolen from him one last time, kills himself in his epilogue.||

civic birch
#

i always understood 'reach out' as like ... ||not just observing, but offering your own perspective; but not outright manipulating. like 'hey, i understand what you're going through, here's my counsel, if you want it'||

(at least that's what's most poignant/appropriate for my Reader :P i also think it generally makes sense, though)

Ah, sorry to hear it

Best I can say is that there are some playthroughs out there in which the streamer will voice-act each character out there for you

But when you're playing, if you make different choices than they did, there'll be parts you haven't seen before, which you'd have to read, but the main thrust of the story stays the same

I also don't like those kinds of choices in games. I actually genuinely don't like visual novels.

I'm slowly trying to do a True Nightwing game with all titan stars and winning every liberation (alt-f4 gets spammed a lot)

it broke my heart when I had to deny falcon ron a ride

vernal harbor
#

you don't have to close the game, you can just pause and load I think?

#

steam version seems to be okay with that

old geyser
#

Doesn’t True Nightwing stop that?

#

Or am I silly?

vernal harbor
#

it could be, let me open the game and check

#

you're right, it's my bad, my save wasn't in true nightwing and that's why I could load, tn probably does stop it

tardy maple
#

Does every triumvirate have a reader that we don't see or do only the Nightwings need one?

lethal cipher
#

I suspect so! In game it says that there where 40 printed books, but if there's only 9 sets of 3 then there would be only 27 books, but if there's 9 sets of 4 there's 36 different used books

#

And if you've played the game you'll come to realize that the last four are also used

stray jolt
#

i think they don't need a reader, but a reader really helps? i'm not sure though

#

if every team had a reader, i'd suspect we'd have mind control and telepathy shenanigans happening before every match

#

and it wouldn't be as big a surprise when we find out volfred is a reader too

#

i'd say the teams have spare books lying around in case they pick up a reader, but they don't really need one to take part in the rites

blissful trench
#

I;d agree, I don't think most triumvirates have an incumbent reader, but would certainly benefit from one and regocnize theirvalue

lethal cipher
#

I have a screenshot of the blackwagon holding 4 different books if anybody's interested in looking by the way

tardy maple
#

Aren't those the ones our exiles hold?

vestal bluff
#

It’s stated in the Book, I believe, that you may or may not have a Reader helping your 3 Rites-conductors. So each Triumvirate would need either 3 or 4 books with them in order to do a Rite

tardy maple
#

Does that include the Nightwings or did they have to have one?

lethal cipher
#

I think it's suggested near the beginning that they need to have one, hence why the group of three where looking for you

stray jolt
#

i think volfred would mention a reader in his story about oralech not-ascending

#

err, i think anyway, not entirely sure

lethal cipher
#

I thought that Volfred was the reader of that group...

wide river
#

yes, he was

#

before him was brighton

#

the thing is, readers can participate

tardy maple
#

But they can't participate and be reader at the same time, right?

wide river
#

it's iffy on whether they can Read and play at the same time

#

· Exiles shall move as of a single mind, to demonstrate their faith, and recognize that they, as we the Eight, cannot prevail alone. Their worth shall be determined both by their actions, and their peers. · Triumvirates lacking experience in this may designate a Reader, whose focus on this Book may help the others to coordinate.

stray jolt
#

see, i'm not sure whether the three exiles looking for us means that they need a reader or volfred just wanted them to have a major advantage over the other teams

wide river
#

the present-day nightwings need a reader because of the tight timeframe meaning they can't learn to work together as well as they need to

stray jolt
#

or to help them along since none of the exiles would know how to do the rites

wide river
#

remember, volfred's plan hinges on the nightwings winning

tardy maple
#

Given that the Nightwings are supposed to be the triumvirate that all others are tested against, it would make sense for them to be required to have such advantages

wide river
#

the only thing you would 'need' a reader for is to know where the rites are

tardy maple
#

It would make sense for it to also just be a thing that's happened in the past and Volfred wanted good chances.

#

Then how did the other triumvirates know where to go?

wide river
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

stray jolt
#

experienced exiles would know and teach the new ones

wide river
#

yeah, that was my assumption

stray jolt
#

they seem to always go to the same places regardless

tardy maple
#

Volfred did predict where the next rite would be at one point.

wide river
#

either that or "it doesn't take a genius to look up and see where the stars are brighter"

stray jolt
#

aside from traitor's isle

wide river
#

· Bearing this the Book bestowed on your triumvirate, you, the Reader, shall perceive under which stars you are to congregate. · Follow where they lead, as your adversaries shall. If either of you fails to appear, then neither of you walks the Path.

#

depending on what it means by "bearing" the book, it might be possible to see where the rites will be even without being literate

tardy maple
#

It's also possible that the other triumvirate leaders are capable of reading but wanted to participate and be freed

wide river
#

mhm

#

or that SOMEONE in the trium could read, at any rate

stray jolt
#

eh, i think if SGG wanted to go that route there would be a lot more mind reading and stuff

tardy maple
#

Depending on the timeframe, it's possible a lot of them were exiled before literacy was outlawed. I missed how long ago that was

wide river
#

reading, not Reading

#

uh, it was a Long Time

tardy maple
#

Dalbert's pretty old

wide river
#

not that old

#

literacy was banned in 617 AS

tardy maple
#

Maybe he's just old in dog years

wide river
#

although

#

hm

#

the game only takes palce in 637 AS

#

that's a way horter timeframe than i remember

#

i'm going to double check....

vestal bluff
#

837 AS

wide river
#

yeah, i misread my damn infographic

#

thought so

stray jolt
#

lmao

wide river
#

so literacy was banned in 617 and the game takes place in 837; only the saps and crones would feasibly be old enough to predate the ban

#

fun fact, don't think too hard about the timeline involved in oralech's fall because you WILL get a headache

tardy maple
#

So they're not old enough to be from before the ban, but it is still possible they're closet literate

#

nobody said it wasn't possible.........

wide river

volfred was apparently "very young" by sap standards when the ban went through

stray jolt
#

lmao imagine having bertrude as your reader

tardy maple

Highwing book club 🐦
Vs
Nightwing book club volfredthink

vernal harbor
#

Nightwing book club is slightly superior thanks to fire-proof ink

#

but Highwing book club can fly, thus taking the literature higher

civic birch
#

IIRC volfred predates the literacy ban, but he was relatively young when it went into place

#

of course, "relatively young" by sap terms could mean, like, fifty, but

#

oh sparrow already said that lmao

#

I do like the idea that literacy is much more widespread among Highwings, and they seem to be more aware of capital-R Reading, too

#

obviously they undergo 'conditioning' to resist mundane interrogation ( ... 😰 ) but right from the start Pamitha can block the Reader out/selectively allow them in

vernal harbor
#

I'm going to headcanon that the highwings are almost all Readers, leading to Pam learning to resist

#

pam doesn't just resist though, she was almost broadcasting at some point I think?

#

so maybe Reading could be used for remote communication, like handfree cellphones

#

and will have the bonus advantage that since commonwealth soldiers cannot read, this is private channel for them

mild falcon
#

ive always kind of liked the idea that since reading is something the average person IRL can do, Reading is also that sort of thing

#

it's all just body language

torn bolt
#

contrary-wise i've always liked the idea that reading is different from Reading

#

and all/most people who can read has the potential to learn how to Read but it's not a common skill to develop without training

mild falcon
#

pamitha's training is just "when you feel a strong emotion, dont move your face as much"

civic birch
#

yeah, I do think that reading (lowercase-r, literacy) is different from Reading (capital R, ambiguously magic)

#

also that letter-reading is not a necessary precursor to big-R Reading

#

it's a common one, and it may be the easiest/fastest way for someone to pick up that skillset, but (for example) I have a Reader who got their start through augury rather than letters

#

it's certainly the easiest avenue to big-R Reading for the commonwealth to control

vernal harbor
#

was the stowaway capable of Reading without reading, I wonder?

#

Reading really is more than just body language, it was almost mind reading

civic birch
#

oh, that's a good point! I think she's definitely inclined that way

torn bolt
#

i really love that :0c

#

i also just really love her connection with the scribes

upper karma
#

I still keep thinking about my last playthrough which was a rollercoaster of emotions:

  • after having a peaceful revolution on my first playthrough, on the same difficulty the liberation rites felt harder
  • I desperately wanted to keep the Stowaway and Almer together (didn't last time) so after he got liberated, I was glad I managed to get her out as well (went for a few more pairings this time)
  • at one point 4 characters had about 50-100 exp. to level up while I cursed at the game for not letting them level up yet
  • due to fear of missing out on the chance to get the 12-titan-star achievement for free on the penultimate rite I started having them on on all rites close to it and somehow prevailed with them and didn't need the freebie at all
  • got the "complete Book of Rites" achievement after losing all hope of getting it
  • the Stowaway is still a cinnamon roll that must be protected, even with a different name (first Fae, now Gae)

The Roller coaster of emotions is one of the reasons why I fell so deeply in love with the game

To which extent did he screw over everyone else? I do remember that he didn't go about things in the best way, but the details are pretty hazy since I last played last year

heavy hill

well for one, he interferes and sabotages other unrelated triumvirates just to fulfill his vendetta against the nightwings, even going so far as to discourage them entirely from trying to win a place in the final liberation

ebon arch

I fully agree with that, but under the circumstances I couldn't justify saving him

civic birch
#

Ultimately he's ... hurt and bitter and lost, and lashing out towards the only way he can think of to fix it

#

Fair enough.

lethal cipher
#

I mean he may risk the whole plan, and I personally would rather improve the lives of the many in the commonwealth than risk him running amok and tearing everything down

lethal cipher
#

Such a great, great game

#

methinks that if books evolved into better experiences they would be this

civic birch
#

No, honestly, that's a perfectly rational decision Saris -- I'm not disagreeing

I do think Oralech deserves his freedom -- he's right! He won it! But ... deserves it more than whoever you Anointed? Than any other exile? And therein lies the dilemma, and that, imo, is what makes it interesting

#

Technically, the premise of the Rites is supposed to be that whoever wants freedom the hardest in that cycle of Rites is Liberated -- so Oralech is perfectly in line there :P

lethal cipher
#

I personally promoted myself over him, though I would have promoted Pamitha if I had known it would have let Hedwyn find Fikani and to help smooth over relations with the highwing remnants. My choice to rescue myself was that so someone who fully understood the will of the scribes was there to make sure everyone else did as well

I won that lib rite in my first playthrough, and I accepted my freedom when Volfred (my Anointed) offered it to me -- ultimately I decided Oralech was right, and that liberation shouldn't be tossed around like a beachball

Aura is about as big

mild falcon
#

Ae tosses robes on wagon at midnight, while everyone's sleeping... everyone inside gets instantly banished

vernal harbor
#

I thought banishing only occurs during rites

#

For balance reason, the wagon as rite player would probably have very small aura but instead of launching it, the wagon inhales opponents within an area inside itself to banish them

mild falcon
#

Ae banishes howlers outside of rite

#

And Gilman banishes eggs

vestal bluff
#

And some of the Pyrehearts too

#

But they all have their Books with them at the time

#

The Howlers don't though, so they don't get auras

heady karma
#

Step 1: smuggle a book back to the commonwealth

Step 2: banish the entire topside

#

Step 3: ?????

#

Step 4: profit

onyx forum
#

?????? Is the step where ur cursed horribly by the scribes ghosts or something

lethal cipher

I think that other people need to have books to be effected, and auras only exist during rites, and all of this must take place in the downside.

heady karma
#

Howlers tho

lethal cipher
#

Or one person brings a book with them and then rule the new commonwealth lol

heady karma
#

Exactly!

#

That’s the plan!

lethal cipher
#

Doesn't seem very balanced

heady karma
#

You are right they might patch it

#

But it would be too late by then

lethal cipher
#

Would it though? All someone'd have to do is shoot the one guy in a mask running at them with a book

#

Or shoot them with a bow and arrow

vestal bluff
#

but what if they banish the arrow midair

heady karma
#

Completely flawless plan I have no idea what you’re talking about

lethal cipher
#

I think banishment works on sentient objects alone, otherwise you would just be able to banish rocks in your way during rites

heady karma
#

Arrows are made from saps

#

Also Jodi could tank at least 70 arrows before going down

lethal cipher
#

...I don't think an elephant could tank 70 arrows, much less basically a bodybuilder

heady karma
#

Demons are tough

lethal cipher
#

...Not that tough though

#

They're still just mortals that have been artificially strengthened and given horns

heady karma
#

Max lvl Jodi has at least 200 hp

#

Plus a super high ac

lethal cipher
#

but arrows deal 50 damage

#

and demons can only dash twice in a row

#

humans can easily outmatch them in a race

heady karma
#

Arrows do like 1d8 + Dex

lethal cipher
#

demons have weakness to arrows, they have -50 resistance to them

#

so it's initial damage that they would have done plus 50

heady karma
#

It would be +50%

given the size of the rug and the size of the average howler that’s terrifying tbh

#

it’d be like having, idk, a cat-skin rug, except all the cats were trying to kill you.

lethal cipher
#

Not much was ever said about howlers except that they needed to be avoided and that they can be banished. Are they undomesticated imps?

#

For me at least

torn bolt
#

i think they are!

#

i think it's implied that howlers are wild imps, and drive-imps are .... maybe not domesticated, because imps can be intelligent, but adapted to live with other species?

#

and probably to get along with each other in close quarters better

#

because ti'zo has a mastery where he can go back and forth between howler form, and in iirc jomuer's chapter, he says ha'ub says howlers might be persuaded to help exiles because they want meaningful work

#

to exist with purpose

#

which i thought was very cute

#

also i ...... suppose that means ha'ub is technically a howler volfredthink

#

if howler = wild imp

civic birch

torn bolt

imps are good ..... i really wish we had more imp characters in pyre
