it’s cute
also i don’t know if i’m just hearing things but when i was transcribing hedwyn’s lines it was always difficult to tell if he was saying N or M
thanks chris
is it a bad read for me to assume she'd be self-conscious about it?
Pyre is good and (along with supergiant in general) inspired me to make my own game
i LIVE for jodi’s lisp 😍
It only makes her more attractive tbh
What's the deal with the sandalwood emoji?
i don't recognize the flag lmao
its the gay pride flag! 🏳️🌈
Hell yes
there's also
Wow that's so deep
but tree already has a husband
Apparently the hot new thing is "size difference" so this fits nicely into that niche
Tree didn't know husband was alive for a while
?????
gilman/rukey, obviously
gilman/rukey is excellent
listen if the phrase "kindred spirits" gets used then the relationship it's referring to is automatically both gay and canon and that's just The Facts™
Gilman is married to his honor. Rukey's married to his moustache. Volfred is married to books. But he cheats on them with Oralech.
And the Reader's married to Sandra 💚
I've never heard of gilman/rukey until now
I still stand by pamitha/rukey
what's this about Jodi having a lisp?? 👀
off the top of my head, it's most notable when she says 'reader'
hang on, lemme pull up the voices...
"reader" in sahrian is "ligaratus" - here's hedwyn saying it...
vs. jodariel saying it
hedwyn's saying "ligaratus", whereas with jodariel it comes out more like "ligaratush"
a lot of jodi's lines have that "s -> sh" sound
but it's most prominent when she says ligaratus
This is why I'm here. For this.
i'm still
about all the different variations on "ligaratus" and how that's reflected in what the characters are actually calling you
like how gilman calls you 'master-reader', which is reflected in that he doesn't say 'ligaratus' but 'magaratus' instead
with pam it's not 'ligaratus' but 'ligaramis', fitting how she'll call you 'reader darling'
sorry, i'm a nerd
'magaratus' makes me go a little huh?? since you'd think the root is 'ligar'
it's apparently not just a simple prefix but replaces part of or the entire root?
maybe "gara" is the root here
sahrian laughs in the face of traditional grammar apparently
'ligar' has a very clear etymology in latin "to bind" tho
i mean, it could just be a portmanteau
it's certainly the odd one out - ligaratus, ligaramis, ligarestas, ligararum, magaratus
maybe it's just a lingual exception
perhaps!
maybe it's slang?
considering that the only characters that use ligaratus variants are from 'foreign' cultures - a harp, a sap, a crone and a wyrm
or it doesn't literally mean "master-reader", that is it's not some honorific stuck in front of "reader"
and is some whole other different root
ie he just calls you master or something in sahrian
suddenly the linguistic complexities of sahrian are now interesting to me
i'm like pretty sure "magaratus" is a portmanteau nickname
kasavin has said "ligarestas" is roughly equivalent to what volfred says: "reader, my kin"
so it could be a diminutive or an ending denoting less formality?
"ligaramis" similarly sounds to me like "my reader" which would be appropriate for pam
"ligararum", knowing bertrude, is probably an archaic form
see, i took the opposite stance and figured "ligarestas" was showing, like.... respect, but not deference the way "master-reader" might
literally volfred calling you his equal
SWEET READER O' MINE....
What are everyone’s favorite charm-character combos
i dont remember volfred calling the reader "my kin" but if it is...
volfred 🤝 ares 👉 same voice actor calling the protag "my kin"
he does! it's "my boy", "my girl" or "my kin" depending on your pronoun choice
honestly i vastly prefer “my kin”, partly bc it’s gender-neutral and partly bc it doesn’t sound so patronising
“my boy” always makes me think of zelda cd-i too gjdkfjdkfjdkhf
I didn’t mind the my boy part beyond always thought of vol as a kind of grandfather to the nightwings
With gil and the moon touched girl being the children
And everyone else being adults apart from bertrude
uncle sandalwood
My kin is ever so slightly memeable
Tbh he is just a bit patronizing towards the reader or maybe I just chose some really bratty responses
if you answer his "what is freedom" question badly or don't answer he's like. hmm, your argument is not very well thought out. C-
also if you admit to not reading the book of rites
volfred asked his "what is freedom" question because he wanted you to answer wrong
so that he could show you how smart he is
Volfred: "what is freedom?"
Reader: "Being able to do what you want"
Volfred: "um ackshually"
volfred: has nobody ever taught you how to formulate a basic argument, do you even know how to write a five paragraph essay
volfred is the kind of tree to make intellectual video essays
remember to like and subscribe, my kin
volfred praises kurzgesagt as the highest form of media
the book of rites is no gesamtkunstwerk
oh my god. volf faces camera goliam was a war criminal...
goliam????
GOLIAM
goliam
goliam....... goodt
it is
· I was unable to watch. My heart ached with such pity for the man, and for the love I felt for him when I had served him, that I sprang to his defense...
And when the danger did subside, my Emperor Soliam Murr, he said something to me, which shook me to the essence of my being. · He said: 'You gave your freedom, Master Golathanian, so that I may yet have mine.' · 'You, too, now are an exile of the Downside. In all the days which I have left, I never could repay the mercy you have shown me. So, if I cannot do so in this life, then I shall do it in the next.'
reminder that these are canon lines from the book of rites
gol said gay rights!!!
you ever love your bf so much you write about it in the bible????
BIG MOOD
me @ all my friends rn
“hey, play pyre!”
same
same
So, I was checking my folders because I need some space on my hard drive and I apparently have 2.5GB of Pyre savefiles. 451 files total. Any idea how I find out which ones I need to keep?
You should only need the core save files?
All save files are the exact same size and named with the same format though. How do I know which are the core ones?
Oh, unless those aren't actually important files? Just found a folder in Documents with files named "profile1" and such. Are those the only necessary ones?
"profile#.sav" are the most important ones; I've successfully duplicated saves by only copying this one file and renaming it, so I don't believe you need the other ones
jesus, how do you have 451 files in there????
I have no idea. Four full playthroughs, I guess? No idea why it made so many files, I have some that were made 2 or 3 minutes apart. Deleted them all though. How many files do y'all have in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Pyre\Content\Saves?
oh, that's the folder you're looking in?
yeesh, no wonder that number seemed unreasonably high.
I don't even have that folder
i have 280 in that folder, but only 19 in the documents/saved games/pyre folder
In my Saved Games folder I just have 8 files (for one save)
Oh my God i just finished Pyre and it was one of the most immersive and lovable stories i've witnessed in a while
It is
let's not forget the music ❤
The story seriously had me at the edge of my seat especially with the liberation rites
I remember vividly my first play through and just being blown away
Liberation as both a story element and a gameplay mechanic is really something else
Can't recall seeing anything quite like it, before or since
I agree, it's a really unique and engaging mechanic
Something I love about Supergiant games in general is that they all manage to tie the gameplay into the narrative really nicely. Pyre’s probably my favorite example of that in particular.
I just love how the game makes Liberation a very complicated choice since you have to find a balance between “who am I most comfortable playing as” and “who most deserves to be sent up”
And even worse, it's more complicated than that. There's also considerations for who is left behind and which people get separated
The dilemma is real
i ... found the gameplay/story division in Pyre kind of jarring, actually
but i do really like the mechanic of liberation
like i don't follow sports but i understand that sport culture goes way deep, and many cultures really do have religious/ritual associations with sports
so i thought that sports and ritual themes actually work really well together
(also 17776 happened around the same time as pyre which really hammered in the sport = ritual metaphor)
for example, i get that on some level, the "only one character can move" mechanic is purely a gameplay restriction, and the book of rites declaring THE THREE MUST MOVE AS ONE, IT BUILDS CHARACTER OR SOMETHING is a kinda goofy contrivance
but then i was like, most rituals in real life are in fact... full of equally arbitrary rules for symbolic reasons
Goofy is exactly the right word
uhhh like, snakes and ladders comes to mind as a game that originally has very symbolic and spiritual meaning
also chess, to some extent
snakes and ladders wikipedia quotes:
The underlying ideals of the game inspired a version introduced in Victorian England in 1892. The game has also been interpreted and used as a tool for teaching the effects of good deeds versus bad. [...] When the game was brought to England, the Indian virtues and vices were replaced by English ones in hopes of better reflecting Victorian doctrines of morality.```
how about those ideals espoused by a game changing through time as it passes from the hands of the scribes to the current day commonwealth
it wasn't so much the rules of the rites as like
hmmm pyre seems to focus a lot on player choice, or ... the illusion thereof
oh we're swimming in ven's territory now
because ultimately player choice doesn't really ... have an impact on the plot
the Commonwealth falls and the Sahrian Union rises with ... only minor changes
i don't know, i'm distracted and i'm having a hard time explaining I think
hmm i think they were going for a "corrupt nations are doomed to fall" concept
but i'd say that.... peaceful revolution vs violent overthrow where lots of people die is a big difference?
it's a difference, but the way it's executed, it didn't really ... have the impact i wanted it to
yeah it's a little impersonal when nobody you know suffers and it's just a statistic of how many people died
yeah. overall a lot of the game felt like it ... didn't have much weight to it? i love the characters, and the setting, but the gameplay ... i couldn't really get invested in the stakes
for me most of the impact in choice came from the impact you made on those individual character's lives though
like my second playthrough i was entirely focused on keeping friends together and getting their interpersonal relationships to work out
It's definitely heavy on the visual novel aspect, the gameplay is just a means to an end
idk maybe my philosophy is just that if you can't make a large scale difference in the world, then making a difference for the small group of people you love is also great and meaningful
not to get too sappy on main
You're right, though, and getting sappy is the appropriate response to Pyre in my opinion
in a twist of irony the resident sap has nearly the opposite philosophy
i. the goal of the Plan is to make a large-scale difference in the world, though
bird is also right, though, in that you don't get to see any of the impact you're making. They try to impart it through the letters from Liberated party members and the epilogue at the end, but it doesn't have as much impact as the relationships of your party members themselves
like, that's an important major goal of the plot
so it's sort of disappointing that ... the lack of variation in the endings ultimately makes those efforts feel kind of futile
i get where you're coming from
the plot does explicitly sell you on the bigass revolution plot point heavily
I think it would be different if you'd gotten to do a split-party sort of game where you also control the characters that had been Liberated in order to carry out the Plan
mm, yeah!
volfred's success percent chance doesn't even do anything as far as i can tell
Then you'd be invested in it, right?
As it is, you're just fighting for an abstract ideal
yeah, yeah. i know it's part of the game, and the traditional supergiant setting other plane™, and ... i even kind of like that you just have to trust the characters you liberate to do good work on the other side
also -- losing non-Lib rites has exactly 0 stakes when you get to a lib rite regardless
idk, maybe they were worried that if they had mechanics for the plan then people would focus too much on optimizing for max revolution success and not pay enough attention to the interpersonal side of the story
There are interpersonal stakes to losing non-Lib rites, but nothing game changing
they're interpersonal stakes and, with a couple exceptions, they don't have lasting consequences either
I do think that having the Nightwings as the guaranteed opponent in the Lib Rites takes some of the risk away from the game, for sure
yeah! yeah, it ... especially if you're playing on a lower difficulty where the AI are kinda stupid it almost feels like bullying
But at the same time, I know they are trying to balance it against narrative
yeah in that case i think the story was just too tightly scripted and they had to make sure you got to a lib rite each time
that ... doesn't make any sense to me, though? the whole point is "failure won't break your game"
that should also apply to lib rites
Pyre was definitely experimental in a lot of ways. It's very much in the visual novel vein, but with more player agency than you might expect
lib rights are emotional climaxes of the story
that DOES also apply to lib rites
and the final rib rite is the climax of the entire overaching plot
i mean, there'd for sure be a way to script it so you necessarily make it to that one. i don't know
make ||the late-round irregularities|| play in more heavily. i don't know
i'm not sure exactly how to fix it, but I know there was a lot about the game that I just found tedious or frustrating rather than emotionally satisfying
idk a lot of people react badly to games tweaking dynamic difficulty under the hood, feels like the game is "going easy" on them, but i could imagine a plot reason for the final lib rite to be guaranteed
oralech punched all the other teams unconscious
he seems like a practical guy though, not sure if he would risk actively making liberation harder for himself just to Be Dramatic
practical sure, but absolutely ruthless if he wants something
he wants freedom above everything else, manipulate the rites to face the pyrehearts or something
^^^
especially when the Rites start rolling around faster, that's ... really when the tedium started to set in and the stakes start to feel negligible
i kinda wish they'd stuck more with the oregon-trail mechanical aspects of the first arc&that were originally planned for the game -- I think spending more time navigating the Downside on a purgatory roadtrip with your friends would ... i don't know! i don't know
god i wish i could explain what didn't work for me
because a lot of the game DID it's just
i don't know
ugh
no yeah the late game grind is a very common and fair criticism
personally i would have liked the late game to have more introspective character moments, really up the melancholy now that your fav characters are liberated
but most of the late game VN segments is tariq or volfred dumping exposition on you
I'm just nodding my head in the background over here
like heeey, there are characters you maybe didn't bond with immediately, but now they're your only companions, why not get to know gloomy snake grandma better
I loved Bertrude 😛
i took a test and apparently bertrude is my second favourite logan character
OOPS
i don't have a verbal filter sorry about that
I DO LOVE BIG BERTRUDE THOUGH ...
bog-crones are just GOOD
feral science lesbians? sign me UP
it's me. i wanna be a feral science lesbian who lives in a bog and blows stuff up
the dream
hee
one of the things i really DO love about Pyre is the whole setup of commonwealth vs downside
where the society that prides itself on "mercy" and "kinship" is such a crapsack dystopia that you can find more love & freedom & family in the hostile purgatory plane
The most powerful and emblematic line in the game, to me, is “What does freedom mean to you?” The way in which volfred responds is also very thematic and I believe it influences most of the story
I agree with that, but at the same time I feel like the questions that you are asked throughout the game have far less impact than I would like
nods nods
Yeah imo it’s mostly just to make it so you interact with your fellow exiles more than like develop lasting effects
EXCEPT FOR RUKEYS STACHE THATS A PERMANENT CHOICE AND UR EVIL IF YOU TELL HIM TO SHAVE
these posts sponsored by the Love Rukey gang
I do with there were more questions that let you impact the game/character reactions. Even scenes like Hedwyn asking you to pick what he should cook ... !
that's one of my favorites because it's one of the ones that feels like the Reader is actually a person in the blackwagon
rather than ... like ... a person-shaped receptacle for exposition
Yeah that’s fair, most of that kind of content is only found in the black wagon and it’s very optional
Just day to day life in the black wagon is interesting to me
Like it’s hard for me to parse a lot of textposition about the scribes/book of rites and while I find it interesting the cooking scene is kind of more relatable and displays how the Reader and other exiles interact
And those characters are stronger imo
vigorous nodding
||Just got to the part where Volfred speaks in actual english and says "I too can read, my boy... Forbidden though the words may be." and I'm shook, hearing characters actually speak english is so insane||
it is Such a good scene
RIGHT!?!?!
i'm still so
about how english exists in sahr/the downside,
worlds at least somewhat implied to be Flat,
words are flat?
It makes sense to me, English could have been the common language, before literacy was abolished, and a mix between root languages could have arisen as a new common language, with no written counterpart
(Multiple characters use english in certain instances, Manley says "much better" with a heavy commonwealth accent after removing his mask)
Is it implied to be completely flat, or like a flat expanse like the salt flats or a desert
and then the fall of soliam being something that sort of runs between planes, perhaps, explaining why it's so hard to travel between the two despite the existence of flying machines
ooh, does anyone have the manley english clip?
https://imgur.com/Brgxwoq world is flat image (credit failerv1)
flat earth real
I thought the Sclorian led into the fall of soliam? And I was always confused by that because it's definitely not where most exiles arrive in the Downside
But soliam sailed down the Sclorian and fell into the Downside so ... ???
i was picturing it as two pancakes
one is above the other
but also..........you're right, different stars?
sclorian and fall are definitely in diff places... i think
I thought the stars were the same?
You posted it most recently lol
my conspiracy theory
(not serious)
reader wearing a tinfoil hood cape: wake up exiles the commonwealth doesn't want you to know about the double hollow downside
hjklkdjlhfkjhdf
it definitely does seem like it's possible to see SOME of the commonwealth sky from the downside
DOWNSIDE TWO
we need to go deeper
They dont work like tardis' either, they just keep getting smaller
If you get sent to the smallest downside you just get crumpled up like a piece of paper
Oh No
Each of the different rites in the deeper sides are based on different sports
the rites in Downside Two are based on cricket and that's why nobody's ever heard of Downside Two
because cricket is incomprehensible
http://www.videobash.com I think the point is that to people in the US, Cricket seems just as retarded as this...
each downside rite is associated with a different smaller sport
downside 1: basketball
downside 2: mini golf
downside 3: foosball
downside 4: thumb wrestling
Downside 5: staring contest
which downside is The Game(tm)
delet this
sclorian has to be down in the bottom of the map, right?
since that's where we the Reader starts?
bottom in what context
like, southerly as the Downside is concerned
because the first arc of the game is mostly travelling north
As you get further into the ever-deepening pit of downsides it gets into the weirder games, dating sims, theme park simulators, eventually it comes full circle and the exiles are playing Pyre to get back to the commonwealth
What layer of the Downside is monster factory
The fancy capital letters in the prompts sometimes throw me off, i thought my prompt was "Heck with the lone minstrel" and i laughed my ass off
😂
I think i'm part bird, I don't know why but tapping on the walls of the blackwagon and the glass and trinkets in there just amuses me too much
Ok, i can't say bird names. so parrots and weird screamy birbs do that a lot
(I can't type C Ockatiel
I'm asking myself : Is there a god in Pyre?
Yslach is the only god you need
there's the scribes, and something star related as spiritualities
i don't think they have a monotheistic god
Scribes have sorta ascended to divinity status yeah
I made Udmildhe return to the commonwealth, I'm really excited to see the ending XD
Tariq and Celeste could very well be demi-gods, given that they seem to be unaging
It is funny to see that in a world so inspired by christianism there is not a real God but it feels ok
U're true @vestal bluff
what parts of the game would you say is inspired by christianity?
I see a lot of pagan influences
Yes too. There is a lot of stained glass too and the book makes me think of the bible
I think the hardest thing about playing pyre right now is the fact that my mouse's battery is dying so the characters will charge up an attack and just sit there
rip
indeed
"The Eight Scribes gave their freedom, so that we may yet have ours" might be what Miari is referring to, re:Christianity's influence
That same self-sacrifice-to-purge-sins idea is rather prominent in Christian works
The scribes pre ascension have more of a folkloric hero feel to me
Ok so i switched out the batteries on my mouse. still unable to attack reliably... is this a common bug?
This is a sign your mouse is dying. This actually happened to me too! Pyre is good at showing you when a mouse is about to die, I guess!?
U can loose and discover what funny ending u'll have, like me XD
Yeah, there's no God in the commonwealth -- Scribes are more folk heroes/legends than gods
The most popular/officially supported religion in the Commonwealth is astralism, a form of star-worship, which iirc only comes up in one or two mouseover prompts
So we only know a little bit about it
It seems to be, like, combined star/ancestor worship? There's the belief that people are reborn as stars after death, and a bright/notable life will produce a brighter star
That itself is definitely derived from the Scribes’ teachings too
It’s mentioned in Dalbert’s epilogue that, we’re there any stars left in the downside, his star would burn bright among them
(Don’t recall the exact phrasing, but it’s something like that)
Would that the stars yet shone, for surely Dalbert's would be there among them, smiling down at his son, and watching over him and his kin.
last line of almer's epilogue
😭
wait is this implying dalbert died after the events of the game? :(
pour one out for dog dad....
i mean, he was pretty old
it's not just implied
if almer is liberated, dalbert dies before the final rite; if almer isn't liberated, dalbert dies shortly after the final rite
oh no, really?
mhm
thank you proxybot for my life
liberated: The elderly Dalbert Oldheart, having achieved his goal of earning back his son's freedom, retired from the Rites. By the time the cycle of the Rites had reached its end, Dalbert's time had come, as well.
remained: Sometime after the Rites had ended, the Oldhearts at last heard the news that the Commonwealth had fallen. [...] Dalbert Oldheart passed peacefully in his sleep before the next new moon.
i knew it was canon he died but i didn't know it could happen within the scope of the game
aw ...
i like the implication that he was hanging on for some good news so he could pass peacefully
if not almer's freedom, the fall of that got dang commonwealth
yup
it's said the news "brought him much joy"
the real sad part is that liberated!almer doesn't hear his dad is dead until quite a while after the fact
oh no....
i wouldnt want to be the imp tasked with delivering that news
Almer did not learn of this until much later. Surely Dalbert would have wanted it that way; would that he could have seen his son during this vital time.
every character in the "savage" class has my whole heart they're All Good
just some feral friends and pals
dalbert and almer are the only Entirely Good opponents
jomuer would have absolutely no complaints
dalbert and almer GOOD
iggy would be fine if he'd stop hitting on jodariel
i like him anyway though
I think Jodi secretly likes it :))
😬 mm. i don't
it's unsolicited is the problem
there's nothing even slightly ambiguous about "stop it. go away"
Hmm
what is it she says? "i would rather cut out my tongue than join your triumvirate"?
yeah something like that
that's Pretty Clear
Hahaha, it's been a while since I played through the single player
But I always imagined demons would not be the buy flowers and send letters kinda people
i know the dynamic has fans but im not one for it
the idea of being hit on by a guy, telling him explicitly "shut up and leave me alone, i have zero interest in you", and him going "aww, you secretly like it" and having him persist is um
terrifying
yeah. yeah yeah

oralech voice why would u buy the flowers....when you can flirt directly to the flowers...................[galaxy brain.png]
As I said, I have not played the single player in a while, but is jodie not blunt to everyone at the start? I take back that they would be a good fit, but I can imagine her approaching any kind of interest extremely bluntly
ahhh yeah.... shes gruff, but she isnt directly antagonistic is the thing
the Reader can tell them they "care for her", and she's a lot gentler about letting them down
she says something like "i appreciate your feelings, but we must draw a boundary there"
its a common trope tbh, the ol 'wear her down', it s just not everyones cup o tea yfeel
it's not as if any character makes advances on her after she gives her signals, apart from iggy
Aw man, I told Jodi I cared for her but my intent was in like, a platonic fashion and I guess I misread the intent of the prompt, and then she did the let down conversation and I was all, "nonono that's not what I meant!"
😄
congrats i think youre the only person to do that hjfvhjfhj
oh are we talking about jodiggy
yeah as someone who's been on the receiving end of that kind of treatment from "friends" several times in my life i don't have any patience for it but you know, if you enjoy it, that's valid
asfdgf i absolutely meant "care for" romantically and i was so disappointed
SAME
i did too dont worry
we are all. loves jodi
we are all! loves jodi!
I would love more aromantic options 😛
We are all loves Jodi. 😭
i understand bc im barely older than ae, so like, i get it, even less on first run, but a kam can dream
gilmanreader secret route
is the reader canonically ugly or something?
NO
someone make us the pyre dating sim we deserve
The reader is you
no i think jodi just
adopts you
Hahaha
hey bird i have some good news and some bad news
oh no
Like that game monster prom
jodi: im your mom not your wife
but with pyre characters
kam should i post the "dating sim"
dating sim
i think with Jodi it's like ... yeah for a younger Reader it's like "i'm your mom not your girlfriend", or for an older Reader it's like ... she's afraid of creating Team Friction
when the Reader is in the decisionmaking position they are, being romantically involved w/ them, even if Jodi does reciprocate their feelings, would be .... Complicating
if ur reader is old enough for her.............................postgame time.....no reason not to 👀
yeessss
oh No
oh yes
no reason not to... if you're on the same side of the world that is
oh it's for pc 😔 tragic
👀
nice
I'm sorry
This all makes me want more games in the pyre universe so badly
Imagine a turn based final fantasy tactics like game
Or a civ like game, where you have to manage commonwealth and downside
PYRE CIV??? I'M INTO IT
jkhfksj huh
HEDWYN LOVER ALERT
i think as a guy........it is gay, actually
literally i was zoned out and scrolling so far down twitter i frgot time existed
are we talking about hedwyn
yesss
i'm always down to talk about my favourite boy
hghjfjfj are u seeing those met loox
i am but i'm sick of the same three pictures oveer and over
also just for future reference i'm going to tap that meme with a gentle
what if hedwyn... had frosted tips
hKLGKJHGLKJH
oh god

HEDWYN'S DINERS DRIVE-INS AND DIVES
how does he get them done in the downside
nevermind i'm going back to twitter if you're going to curse my boy like this
does ti'zo do them? is it pamitha?
there's gotta be some bleach equivalent
nnnoo come back
Yea for sure
i say, as if i didn't turn him blonde once for a laff
i mean lendel has blue hair?
bertrude would have the right materials, surely
harps have colorful hair too tho
also did bubblegum pink oralech one time too
its natural he has anime protag disease
all the harps have technicolor hair too
and humans are theoretically descended from harps or something
SHOW US PINK ORALECH
so maybe humans just have a wider range of hair colors in pyreworld
they have a common ancestor, technically , but yeah
mjgjgjkgjk it means ur closer 2 harp
you've activated my trap card: biology
i gave hedwyn "miku hair", so anything is possible
YESS
stylish
he looks GOOd
OH HE PINK
him 🅱ink
That is a STATEMENT
blonde hedwyn also
terible
wrong and bad.
Also yeah harp hair is -- OOGH
LEMON HEDWYN
i thought it was described as humans giving up their wings or something and harps staying the same???
i mean i guess "realistically" it would have to be far enough back that it was a common genetic ancestor but like, magic exists, in this world, so
ledwyn hedwyn
i wish i still had that lendel animation where his eyes blink out-of-sync with each other
several people are typing
Jodi dating sim ||Jodariel: YOU DIED
||
bird remember our take of humans w claw feet like harps
good
YEAH THAT'S A GOOD TAKE
objectively good take
I still also want nictitating eyelids
jen cant decide if harps have bird or human feet so it's our city now
eyelid do what
anyway if we're talking pyre dating sims does that mean i get to shove my photoshops in people's faces again like a new parent with baby photos
a second eyelid, kam
^^
or my other better take of harps w handfeet like monkeys
yessssss
@wide river Yes please
Also I think ha'ub refers to it as the "parable of the common ancestor" but, yeah, there's no reason all the minutia of biology should apply

... I just want them to 'cause that's my field :P
you're SO valid what do you think about saps
i personally think they're tree mimics
ambush predators that stood very still and ate like birds and stuff
Ooh that's a good one!
That's a deep rooted theory
i like the idea that saps don't die they just plant their roots and actually become trees
Oh that's mine! Unless it existed earlier
So, if you're standing in a forest, it could be a graveyard?
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/251839600111124481/481009859878191104/unknown.png my personal harp theory thats consistent with all the art
New saps are born when an old, "dead" sap is cut down and saplings grow out of its stump
That is one cursed picture
I have no idea if I originated it but I Did write a lifespan post with that headcanon for saps
Hmm! Don't like that
yeah the idea has bounced around before
😄 great minds think alike i guess
oh very bad image
we do have a rough-ish estimate for sap lifespan based on volfred
the literacy ban was implemented like 200 years ago
and i have it on good faith that volf was alive but fairly young then
if he's middle aged now, just based on appearance/age coding, that would put average sap lifespan around like 375-400 years
& he's, like, middle-aged now, righ - yeah
all these saps have old fashioned ideas that arent compatible with modern times, such as "reading should be legal"
i tend to put them at more like 400-600, but definitely Several Centuries
that was honestly my first hint that volf was probably born before the literacy ban gfkghf
asdfghjg i have a Sap OC who was already middle-aged/old when the literacy ban was implemented and just didn't care enough to change her ways
just, the likelihood of being literate is much higher if he'd been born before the ban
and crones seem like they can basically live as long as they will themselves too lol
Is a Sap reading from a book like a person reading from pages of flesh?
you say that like it's a wild thing, wight, but vellum is a thing
lendel is like. cat (wink) im a kity cat
no its like reading a book bound in cow leather
ok yeah and that
I'm aware of the history of "paper"
like...tree trees r probably lesser 2 saps...like animals or something
Fair point
ah sounds familiar
not unintelligent, per se, not un-alive, but definitely not the same
God, all of this makes me want to replay pyre
do it
True nightwing mode here I come
sap farmers tending to crops with a totally diff angle than nonsaps...
what if some saps dont believe in evolution
"you mean to tell us that our proud species decended from these immobile plants?"
[sticks my legy up real high] okay whomst here gay for jodariel
if they're tree mimics then they aren't descended from trees but actually evolved to look like them 👀
meeee
saps probably go into forest management stuff rather than clear cut farming
meeee
here, i took a hammer and Fixed That Scene™
IM GAY FOR JODI
I would sisterzone Jodi

THIS HEALED ... MY GAY LITTLE BROKEN HEART ... THANK YOU
⚒
also ven I like to think of saps as true Treeple, just because of the opportunities for Weird Biology ... photosynthesis ... roots ...
oh how deep the sap headcanons go.....
i also have like two fluffy hedwyn scenes and one Big Confession Moment if anyone would like those
theyre so rich w ideas
POST POST POST POST
bc for a while my go-to thing when i got bored was to pseudo-write fanfic using photoshop and my dialogue templates lmao

please PLEASE HEDWYN
sap vs sap warfare taking place on an ecological scale, with allelopathy and the poisoning of water supplies and the disruption of root networks

I USE IT CONSTANTLY I LOVE HIM
PLUS they're mobile
I LOVE THE HIM!
omnivorous plus
/shrug, waves hands
it takes a lot of energy to be mobile and have Brain
they get the food and the sun
a sap can and will eat you
you are already dead. a sap has already eaten you
there's a reason the cw is still wary of the woods gkjdfgd
oh i ABSOLUTELY headcanon that the westerly woods used to be a Death Forest
i get the same feeling looking at manley as i do when looking at a teacup-sized poodle and thinking "you used to be a wolf once."
bhvhjvhgjfvhjfjfj
you walk in and you just don't walk out and people learned to avoid it after a while
scary stories of children lost in the woods
i have this whole headcanon about how sap first contact happened oops
I have never done anything of the sort, but I am suddenly super in the mood for dungeons and downside
esp if ur somethin tiny like a cur or wyrm
a cur is just a lil meatball to an Olde Sap
hot take: saps can & will eat people but not via their visible mouths

what u think they take the time to turn their food into fertilizer first
"hold up i just gotta bury my lunch"
Does that include rites Stephen? Or just the world in general
almost like an octopus but instead of having a beak they just kinda roll over it and churn it up into the ground
it's free blood meal
wild
OH YOU MEAN THEY CHOP IT UP RIGHT THERE 😱
they'd have to be stationary for a long time to absorb that
my idea is for a campaign that's a mix of rites and Downside Adventures
root knives ghfghdgh
Sounds awesome!
sap 🤝 crone
that's largely because they're cold-blooded though 🤔 are saps cold-blooded
SAP AND CRONE SOLIDARITY IS GOOD
wait are they...
do they have blood is the question
Are saps even blooded
ok
i mean if they're treeple
sticky blooded
or do they have to rely on the environment
because that's another big part of metabolism
you head up mount alodiel & volfred is like hmm! time for me to take a nap
wake me up when we hit moonlight alcove
gkjhgkdfhg that would be inconvenient
wait theres like 3 or 4 coldblooded nightwings...
rip the og nightwings. you got a new Reader but he's useless at the actual lib rites
cos he's too groggy
all the coldblooded nightwings gota huddle w you for warmth
big hug ❤
bertrude, with all her snakes wrapped around her like a scarf: >:|
we cracked the code guys
also cake who's coldblooded besides bertrude and volf? i can imagine sir gilman but who's the last one
hes just big weighted scarf...............................
I feel like gilman is not the best hugging target
i dont know anything about birds tbh
yes he is what do you mean
birds are Very warm-blooded, they run super hot
wrap that gilman around my shoulders =w=
need a fast metabolism for all that flight energy
pam warm...
pam warmm
does a cool jig independently evolved four-chambered heaaaaaarts!
me: hugs pam
bertrude: you dont need that sssstep asssside
pam sleeps on the roof she's gotta be warm!!
OR SNUG
SNUG!!!!
i want a snake hug (snug) from bertrude
Snuggling up with Pamitha: You heart is beating so fast!!
Tfw birds have a heart rate of 300 on average
she probably doesn't run that fast
I wonder if wyrms are warmblooded actually? they're very high-energy
yeah, that was my thought! a lot of predatory fishes have some degree of endothermy, which gives them the energy advantage in cold seas
salmon sharks etc
and salmon themselves actually
tuna ...
if they're snakish maybe they're like anacondas?
how so?
wyrms constrictors?
😰
evil hug from sir deluge
NOOOOO
me: wear gilman as scarf
gilman: resists urge to choke
Gilman would be honored to warm the readers neck
FOR GLORYYYYYYYYYYY
I would just keep giving rukey scooby snacks which would end up getting me killed probably
wear gilman as a scarf
gilman: HAVE NO FEAR, HONORED READER! THIS KNIGHT SHALL REFRAIN FROM CRUSHING YOUR FRAGILE WINDPIPE!
reader: well i wasn't worried about that before you said it,
THE ULTIMATE EXPRESSION OF TRUST, MASTER-READER! THIS KNIGHT COULD KILL YOU AT ANY TIME, BUT WOULD NEVER!

OH HAT
OH WYRM
ajvoice oeh wyrm
oh wyrrrrrrrm
oh wrap
So yea I think we can all agree that the best possible game for supergiant to make next would pyre civilization with dating elements

i'd die for an eight scribes prequel game tbh
would be*
but also id love that
god it JUST NOW hit me how absolutely nice it must be to snuggle with pamitha
warm ... soft wings ...
Even the baddies just need a hug
manley im down to hug
actually yknow what id hug deluge for the memes. iggy i dont trust tho
i would give iggy a, like, bro hug
i would hug aj id absolutely hug aj
an Intricate Rituals hug
iggy can have a pat on the back
iggys very big and would not release when i say iggy i cant breathe
i'd hug iggy Way Sooner than manley
sports bros one-armed "good game man" hug
Yea I wouldn't hug Iggy either, unless I got to know him a bit
don't trust him
yet
jodi hugs good.....
manley would throttle you though
manley can get a punch in the face i don't care if it'd break my hand
HJFGHJFJFJ
also tree men don't give good hugs
i'll break his stupid pinocchio nose off
Woa woa bird calm down with the violence
look
volfred would manage to give good hugs despite everything
Poor Manley
i joke, i joke
volfred gives best hugs
Volfred seems like a hoodie kinda guy
maybe my favorite kind of hug is a dad hug that lifts me four feet off the ground
"kam you've seen it" the underground fic market

hey what do you think the etiquette on petting curs is
i feel like it's a "trusted friends only" privilege
definitely ask first
try petting barker, ever, and he'll take your hand off
it's probably seen as disrespectful in most circles
yeah its probably like, Only My Trustedest Friends
please consider: cur couples allogrooming
good consider
i finally got a chance to play pyre
like, parrot colored???
Y YE EY EYEAEEEESSSS
oh no behaviorally
parrotlets are less social than other parrots, they only tend to travel in flocks of 5-8 and keep to themselves/their mated partner
in captivity, even with a bonded, mated pair, they shouldn't be housed together, because if they can't get their Space they'll often attack each other
sometimes fatally
too late, need me a colorful tizo
god but like. what if imps. Are Like Budgies. all one color in the wild but domesticated. colors
hm bird are howlers......wild or just feral?
they definitely Swarm at times.....ig that doesn't necessarily speak to their normal social habits but like
i like the potential distinction between (self)domesticated drive imps vs FERAL howlers vs ancient Wild Imps
i think howlers are Wild b/c i'm not sure that drive-imps are, like, truly domesticated
oh i do like that distinction though 🤔
i don't see why they couldn't be domesticated
sky blu inp...
i guess eight hundred years isn't too long, but we do know they have rare capacity for intelligence, and an innate need for Purpose
that animals in our world don't have
true ... yeah that's why i'm
also sky blu imp.....
sky blu imp .....
i think 800 years is def enough for imps to have like. adapted to the presence of exiles, and interacting with them
Based on dialogue from udmildhe, (not that she's the most reliable source) the imps and other creatures of the downside supposedly came from yslach

thank you, thank you, i get all my funny from kam
awawww
what did you estimate imp lifespan at anyways, if ha'ub was 800 years ago and ti'zo's only his like.....great grandson?
that's a pretty long generational length
very big yeah
ti'zo's probably like comparable to volfred in age, if not a little older
tizo a grandpa
grandpa bibo
grandba...
i took "great-grandson" as being like ...
"great(nth)-grandson" but it would be tedious & hard to list the correct number of greats
so collapse it
that's also valid but doesn't tariq say like
isnt it more fun the other way
something about ti'zo being pretty old
yeah
also how i interpreted it tbh like. great great great great etc grandson
if that was the case why not say descendant
i thought he said, like, "older than you'd think" but also that could just be, like, "ti'zo is actually thirty"
more poetic
great grandson more poetic than descendant
thinkin about olddays tariq asking ultrapolitely to make a non rites stop on khaylmer isle and the ppl are like UHHH SOMETHING SPOOKY IS GOING ON but its. inp eggs abt to hatch
it could be gkjdfgdf i also just like to imagine tariq and ti'zo have been friends for like a century
OHHHHH
me too!!! know each other inside n out by now...
the olllld nightwings all help the inps fly away for the first time but one......sneaks into tariqs hat
YEESSSSS
in true tariqian fashion he totally knows but waits a few hours to be like excuse me but we have....a situation
as if he Just Realized
and then doesn't immediately say what it is, to build drama.
OF COURSE
of COURSE
hes alreasy taken them off course, their reader is about to faint
i broke the stars
JDJFJDKG
i will never forget tariq letting the entire nightwings think that hedwyn had just DIED
YES
this is like ... his one (1) source of amusement is screwing with people
he loves drama n prankery hes just quiet abt it
trickster god pressed into service
hfjfjckg
the moon IS a trickster. always changing shape like that
gjhdfkghdfkgjhdfkgjdfkh something something can't trust a guy who looks different every time you see him
HEE
I am very ehre for wholesome prankster tariq
"wholesome"
""wholesome""
HE LET US THINK HEDWYN DIED
im here for full moon tariq, 100% round
volfred kinda naturaly assumes tariq is very humorless and if he will laugh at something itll be intellectual smartjokery but he never does and then one day volfred opens the wagon door and sends an imp flying and it makes a noise like a deflating balloon and tariq is, for herald standards, in tears of laughter
SPHERIQ....
HJGKLFKJHGF
tariq is making sad trumpet noises
not sad but like. choking "bweeoo bbwooo bwee" noises like a trumpet that's 2/3 broken
Don't Starve instrument-noise dialogue
love the idea that a hahaha is just polite humanmasking but their true laughs are instruments
metronome noises when theyre thinkin hard abt something....tock tock tock
You’re up at Scribesgate, jet-lagged to hell, being interrogated by Celeste, and when she doesn’t like what you’ve said, she’s just gonna tick at you
honestly? terribly threatening
YEAH!!
hard to get a sense of scale in the world
it's a whole multiple continents, so I assume so 🤔
Ok so i'm pretty much completely stuck on the fight in the arena with the weird giant referee imps
Rukey doesn't do enough damage to counteract snake granny and her imps, and none of the other characters are fast enough/do enough damage to keep up
thats not an easy one
i cant remember, but i think the characters you're facing have relatively low hope
maybe playing it defensive until enough of your opponents are out might be the path to take if aggro doesnt work
Hi ^^
I was wondering if there any shops where I could buy some Pyre merch like a poster or a Ti'zo plush toy? I'm from Spain but I'm willing to pay for the shipping :3
the ti’zo plush is absolutely worth it
Does anybody know of any Pyre fanfic out there? I'd like to try writing some, but I'd like to know what the community's done already
I remember reading one where the whole band met rukeys parents and had dinner after the events of the game that I really liked but don’t know where it went :(
Alright, thanks. I imagine it'll be a hassle to search through the fanworks channel, but I'll give it a shot
there's also a whole load of stuff on archive of our own
Could I read them? I love the pyre universe and the ones I read were super charming
oh god why haven't i thought of this
pyre fanfic of course there exists pyre fanfic
O_o
There exists a whole ton of it
D:
People have written Readers from other perspectives too
There's one particular, multi-part series about "What if Manley and the Chastity found the Reader instead of the Nightwings"
Forget the title, but it's pretty in-depth
And cosplayers have def made physical Books before too!
I met a pyre cosplayer with a physical book a few weeks ago
but with all the text :}
the writing wasn't finished, but i think she intended to do it until the next con
sheesh
That's next-level
cosplayers are dedicated to their craft for sure
@wide river Thank you!!!
There's a REAL good in-progress duo.
called Roots/Fruits that goes more in-depth into the Commonwealth, Volfred's personal history, the OG Nightwings and the genesis of the Plan
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the
Organization for Transformative Works
roots is So good
IT RLLY IS
I just love that clenches fist sweet, sweet worldbuilding
The one subsection that's entirely about how important Bertrude is, personally & practically, to the revolution? chef kiss while crying
The details about how the Commonwealth even HANDLES bureacracy and higher education without literacy .... MMM I CRAVE THE LEGITIMACY OF ORAL MNEMONICS AND TRADITION!!!!!
I based a lot of the races in my own game off of Pyre's aesthetic
There are mini-sand-harps called Gamayu and kind of feathery/fluffy demons and stuff like that
@civic birch and the parts about the oppression people face under the commonwealth rule like god that is some good stuff
YEAHHHHHHHH
the narration abt like ... volfred watching CW restrictions tighten & tighten, across "generations" for shorter-lived peoples but within his own lifetime ... damn, chills
Tangentially, one of these days I really gotta get around
To writing my Nightwings postcanon death/ascension fic ...
i was thinkin about one where the reader really does leave when volfred urges them to
and then goes to the withdrawn
👀 oh jeez
makes things REAL interesting
I haven't seen that one around
i havent written it yet lol
I'd have to study character speech patterns,,, i wonder whats the best way to do that
(play pyre again?)
(prolly :P)
or maybe ill just read these fics so i can assimilate other people's takes on the characters
ok the scope of this idea in my head has increased hugely, so either it'll be a masterpiece or you'll never hear of it again
asdbfdg
