I first picked up Pyre about halfway through this year, in the lowest point in my life.

At first, I found the game a lot of fun, enjoying the mechanics and growing to appreciate the characters more and more over time

After my first playthrough on normal difficulty, I decided to challenge myself and play on heightened, and my greatest regret during that was resetting a liberation rite I was about to lose against the Essence. I wasn't willing to let Tabitha be free over Sir Gilman. As my way of penance, I let the Fate win the next liberation rite, playing half-heartedly because I wanted the old cur to be free.

Then, after that playthrough, I decided I was going to do a True Nightwings playthrough and truly test myself.

I have never been so emotionally invested in a game as I have in that playthrough

The matches were far more difficult than any I'd had before, but through a combination of strategy, determination and at least some skill, I managed to get through with only a few losses

The most notable of which being a liberation rite against the Fate, in which I gave my all and they still beat me, truly earning their freedom

Then came the final liberation rite

I used everything I had, in a tooth and nail battle that streched on in my refusal to lose. But eventually, I did, and I saw what I'd never seen before

I lost against Oralech for the first time and was shown mercy

I accepted it, for the first time doing so without feeling the guilt of leaving Oralech in the downside

Pyre is a game that took me at my lowest, inspired me, and re-ignited my passion for video games and music at a time I needed it most

Thanks to Darren Korb's amazing soundtrack and stellar music design, I was inspired to chase my dream of being a composer for video game music

It's thanks to Pyre that I've been able to make it this far

Truth be told, my favourite member of the other triumvirates is actually ignarius

He's rough around the edges, but he's kind of sweet

Oralech doesn't count because he's technically a nightwing

One thing I love about pyre is that it puts a lot of value in friendships

There are no romantic relationships within the nightwings

And the only time romantic feelings are shown, with Bertrude, she makes it clear she values their friendship just as much as Volfred does

And the only romantic relationships that do form are with people outside of the nightwings

And this group of inseperable friends, all vastly different from one another, form a bond closer than any other. And you get to be a part of that in a way that does not jeapordise the experience whatsoever, in fact enhancing it

It would have been so easy to simply have you be an observer in the story, the unseen force behind the tragic and dramatic tale of the nightwings

But you are a part of the story.

You are not only a part of a story that unfolds, but you are a part of the nightwings' unshakable bond too

And as such, you grow so much closer to the members of the nightwings as a result

It is not a love that you get to observe, it is one you experience

And it is why every choice is so difficult

Because puts you in a place where you are directly responsible for every choice, and it lets you know that

And that's why it is able to have such an emotional impact

Because you are a part of that story

It isn't shown in this big, dramatic scene that makes everything clear

It's shown in little bits throughout the entire game

And when you arrive at the end and you get to see where they ended up

You feel proud of them

Because you were with them on the journey and helped them get to that point

And even if you still seperate yourself from the nightwings and don't see yourself as a part of the group, 'Bound Together' reaffirms that you were a part of that family from the beginning

And the part that made me cry the most was the picture at the end

Oh, I just remembered something that supports my statement

While they aren't the only examples, three good ones are through the scrying orb, reading the stars, and the moment where Oralech enters the blackwagon

Firstly, the stars

It's the second thing that you do that aids the nightwings

And it is something that is done after every rite, save for the liberation rite

It is a constant reminder of your importance within the group, as you are their navigator, guiding their path forward

One important thing to note is that you never do it without someone asking you, namely tariq more often than not, to come and discern the way forward

It is not an unknown job, and it is made clear by the fact that you are always requested to do it

The second is through the scrying orb, or more specifically, Sandra the Unseeing

The thing about Sandra is

She forms a bond with nobody except for you, the reader

And while you could argue that she knows Volfred from his past as a reader for the nightwings

It is apparent that she holds a lot of affection for you towards the end of the game, most notably when she calls you the "Lovely Reader", and especially at the end where she asks you to take her with him

It is a bond only you get to share, and that in itself makes it special

Because regardless of whether you are liberated or not, you will always have her by your side

The third is Oralech's surprise visit on the way to a rite

When Oralech appears on the road, he could have talked to Tizo (although it's possible Tizo was liberated already) or Volfred, both of which would know him, or any other member for that matter

Instead, he chooses to make his declaration to you

And only you

Well, I treated Sandra more like a really sarcastic person. She's been in that crystal for a really long time, so in my opinion the Reader was for her just another person in her eternal torture. At the end her request seemed to me more like the last attempt to change something. Like "Ah, to hell with all this, now or never".

While that's true, I think the moment in which you are given the option to stay with sandra for a while in the orb shows otherwise

And while it is true that Sandra has not had a meaningful relationship with anyone over the last 846 years, the fact that it is the reader that makes the active effort to get closer to Sandra carries importance too

Back to Oralech

He sees you at a time when nobody else is around to give you a message to relay to the rest of the nightwings

And then he tells you

"I will have my night"

Instead of Volfred or Tizo with whom he has personal ties with

He challenges you

I thought he had towards the Reader some kind of spite and that's why he spoke only and only with us, just to thrown down the challenge and see if we're worthy. Oralech had cut the ties with Volfred long ago so he had nothing to tell him.

Giving him an emotional investment toward the player, further cementing you as a part if that world

Is Hedwyn weak? I understand the Nomad role is meant to be a sort of Jack of All Trades but I just felt like he was slow and if I kept him as defense I'd be better off bringing Jody or Volfred.

he's just a normal dude, so give him assist roles and run him as a setup man

he's not a tank or striker, so running him hard makes him less useful overall

This game has a lot of possible endings. 3 possible endings for most characters I think with many, many combinations depnding on which characters get which endings. If you are worried about getting a bad ending then dont worry as there is sweetness found in even the worst ending of this game.

I think our characters are archetypal enough to where they can be read in a number of different ways, so I'm always resistant to giving yes/no answers to these types of questions. Though I appreciate you asking and the kind words.

For sure it's intended that Xae comes across as someone who views the world in a unique way; and in her society some people did not know what to do about that, and shunned her for it. But she handles it, and her worldview on the whole is arguably healthier than that of many other characters in the game. Anyway! I've seen this impression around Xae and am glad it came across well.

OK, so after experimenting, only losing seems to give you an option that won't make you choose between Oralech yeeting himself and him going up.

Also, that fight is actually pretty fun with all 12 titan stars on TN.

Although that imp's AI is so screwy. It focuses more on killing your team than scoring, so even when I leave an open field, it goes for the kill.

Clearly, imps are violent menaces that cannot be trusted.

before hades came out i was intermittently banging my head against the conlang to see what i could parse out

it's only loosely structured because ultimately what we got in-game was fragments more than sentences

but words and such can sometimes be figured out with enough context

seems to be a recurring theme in all my all-time favorite games haha

they hired linguists and did some full blown conlanging in Jade Empire

the japanese influence seemed to me to be mostly limited to interjections

the r's pronunciation is sometimes flapped instead of rolled which makes it sound more like the japanese r-d-l sound, but it's not consistent enough to call it intentional

And then I made a python script to hunt for frequently repeated sets of letters in order to try to pin down words

Most of them were words I'd already picked out but there were a couple spellings and phrases that changed thanks to that
