Ty!
I mean there's a bunch of little variations in each character's epilogues depending on who else ascended
I know the Pam/Tam ones is really good when theyre both libbed
that too
I wonder if you just let all the other triumvirates ascend what happens
war
Oh yeah
@lime turret done ! remember when celeste asks you about your origin and purpose at the gate ? depending on what you pick , the dialgoue changes at the end when you liberate the reader
i thiiink in this playthrough i picked something along the lines of ”contributing to volfred s plan” , so at the very end , the game tells you that the reader helped form the sahrian union
well ,, i hope that was helpful
my memory s kinda vague
there was nothing special about the dialogue btw , it was rather vague itself
actually yeah i remember that’s what happens
its not ur memory, the game is just really vague about it
I always thought it was weird how vague it is about the reader's ending even if you ascended and told Tariq you wanted to help make things better. Like you'd think they'd have some impact that people would remember
i was hoping to see a bit of the commonwealth too ! but nah . all you get is really vague bits and pieces
wait uh.. ”so at the very end , the game tells you that the reader helped form the sahrian union”
is...is that all
legit
all
pretty much yeah
it s kind of satisfactory despite the vagueness though
at least we got a clear idea on how most of the other characters end up doing
i wanted to see the commonwealth too
it's Up To Interpretation (tm) so the player can imagine what all they got up to themselves I guess
EXACTLY
all you see of the commonwealth is a... library
bro
i wanna see what s so good about this place
the library’s good enough i guess-
you can see a little bit out of the window
you kinda realise it s best to not drag yourself down because that s all you re given and nothing more
yeah ! a bit outside the window
not enough
their buildings were really weird
i just think they re neat
do not , react,, with that emoji
yes’m 😂 sorry
good morning what a beautiful day to remember that hedwyn has never done anything wrong, ever, in his life
may he live on in glory
he stayed true to the end!
morning
🌞 👋
so I'm finally starting to dig into the less immediately relevant lore bits in the Book, particularly the chapter about the titans, and it's certainly interesting all the creative ways the scribes defeated then all. From ramming a ship into it to dazing it with the glory of the stars, to an all out battle spanning seventeen months, to flying down its throat and choking it from the inside, to, my favorite, dropping 16,000 tons of beetle dung on it
apparently Jomuer refused to talk about how he set up that particular trap, though to be fair I wouldn't want to talk about my involvement with 16,000 tons of beetle crap either
scribes: haha wow jomuer how did u
jomuer: 🐶 🤐
I don't even want to think about how big the beetles get in the downside to produce that much crap
Figures the cur scribe would be the poo prank one
ha, Lu Sclorian alludes to it in his chapter about the landmarks. "But Jomuer, in his brashness, felled the monster with a certain flair." That's one way of looking at it? Sure I guess
Ah yes, my favorite Pyre man, Hedwyn Wasthere
Hedwyn Prevailed-Wasthere (he liked both of them)
hedwyn: volfred make me a buisness card
volfred: HEDWYN PREVAILED-WASTHERE: STRIDING THE PATH HIS HEART SETS BEFORE HIM
hedwyn: (thinks its offering cooking classes) thanks i love it i owe u my life
the BEST way to get people into your cooking class
come to the cooking class! Hedwyn was there
oralech: brighton can you write a sign that says im a doctor, please?
brighton: KICK ME LOL
(years pass)
volfred: hey, you know that says KICK ME LOL right?
oralech: no, i cant read. can you fix it?
volfred: sure.
volfred: HOT DOCTOR HERE
(years pass)
(oralech learns to read)
it worked and it's true, what else could you want :')
hdjcnfnfmcnx thats just the kind of sneaky planning u expect from
(volfred signing his name) hm, i would write hot c. volfred sandalwood, but i dont like redundancy in my writings.
cmokin hot cap
I've been reading over a bit more of the Book of Rites and thinking way too hard about the logistics of it specifying there are 40 copies of said book. It stands to reason each team would get 4 copies, 3 for the triumvirate plus one in the event they have a separate Reader, but with there being nine officially recognized teams, that still leaves 4 unassigned copies. Do the Beyonders get a set? Were they left somewhere around Mt Alodiel in the event someone saw fit to create a splinter faction COUGHtruenightwings?
also nevermind that there are clearly more than four copies in the Nightwings' blackwagon...
Are there??
i think so hmm
like in the blackwagon theres a bunch just sitting around
scribes: (writing the first copy) oh how fun and exciting!
scribes: (writing the 39th copy) 🙃
when everything's still piled on the floor you can only see 4, but when they're shelved there are at least 4 stacked next to each other plus the one that you interact with that's also propped against another one
🤔
sorry it's blurry, this is a screenshot i took for conversation template purposes
but yeah you can see six in this shot
there's even another one in the row on the left that isn't always visible, so 7
ghdjdjchfj nightwings hoarding all the books
maybe theyre in there to prepare for true nightwings
plot twist, that's why there's been no rites
oralech: (grabby hands towards the blackwagon)
because nobody else has any books
hfhjfjfhj
true nightwings show up to that first rite with homemade books
hey speaking of the book of rites would anybody like a ridiculously large version of the interactable book?
is there writing in them? NO. but there is LOVE
the real reason Oralech infiltrated the wagon that one time
true nightwing's books is a bunch of drawings of angry oralech
what we didn't see was him stuffing all the extra books down the front of his raiments
hdfjfhjfjhfhm
also here have Large Booke
oralech wow the demonixation rly got u ur body is lumpy
nice
fr i'm going to put this up to
doylist: it was an oversight
watsonian: Scribes is liars sometimes
scribes is a liars sometimes.........
scribes: we made 40 books, not counting the 10 extra secret books we made for our favorite friends,
listen thers 8 of them at some point u make book after book and u simply loose track
"aw darn we all made extras" "uhhhh stuff em in nightwing pile"
"never speak of this"
I'd actually believe that
and the copy we read is just inaccurate
Solium writing the 41st copy: Hey Lu, how many of these have we completed so far?
Lu: uhh...
lu: twenty
Wait there's definitely more than 40 now, I'll just correct that in this one and say there's more than 40 in my chapter
They had some extra Yslach hide they needed to use up
lol yes
**** yeah brother!!!!!! (oops this is the no swear server)
More adventures reading the book of rites. From the page about slugmarkets: "They lust for coins, for the Imperial Sol, though why, they do not say. We speculate it is a delicacy." Does Falcon Ron eat money???
I didn't need to think about the possibility of slugs digesting coins, Jomuer
Maybe they like shave them down and use them as a condiment
Way ahead of the curve on bougie food
so like the gold encrusted pizza I heard apparently exists, albeit for no other reason than to be as flagrantly expensive as possible?
yes
this still frames falcon ron/ slugs as whole in a way I don't think I'm comfortable with, though to be honest the less we know for certain about falcon ron the better
Fav
These prices are worth getting washed down a river for
monopoly pyre edition, ron is the winner by default, somehow
@SGG bring us a SGG crossover boardgame
"Do not pass the Shimmerpool do not collect 200 Sol"
wait
Old currency is called Sol
New currency is Lum
Sol-Lum
Sollum
Soliam
Scribes Confirmed for currency lords
omg I never even noticed the new currency was called lum
It's called Lun, actually - like sol and luna, sun and moon
which makes you wonder about the new currency for the sahrian union lol
stars i guess?
it'd be a little awkward to name your currency after the stars when you watched them all burn out
<Text Id="GoldAlt" DisplayName="Lun" Description="The legal tender of the {$Keywords.Commonwealth} of Sahr." />
the only place you really see it come up in-game is in the settling of Rukey's debt
valid
I also choose to believe that Soliam's phonetic similarity to sol/lun = sun/moon is not a coincidence. That's a good observation and fits with the symbolism of the game
The moon: Appears in the sky before sunset
Celeste, from the Gate: TARIQ YOU FIX THIS RIGHT NOW
the real reason they work different shifts
An eclipse is just one of them aggressively shoving the other out of the way
im here
hewwo

theyre good mods tho
get em into it early
(pls forgive the fact that the conversation is clearly taking place right before the final liberation rite,, it's just for testing purposes)
there's a bunch of info on what/why in the description of the video
omg sparrow that’s such a well done mod
i wouldn’t have guessed :0 looks like something that is originally there
yessss
so you’ve done this by manipulating(?) the game script..?
that's always the goal
basically!
the game's scripts for calling certain conversations at certain times can be edited
and i can also add in entirely new lines of text, as well as editing what's already there
for example, i was working on a similar mod that would add an entirely new conversation between mae and tariq, lemme find the video
A mod that will, once finished, implement a custom conversation seamlessly alongside the Moon-Touched Girl's pre-existing blackwagon conversations, without r...

caitlin....what do u think of.....tizo

lmfao
caitlin i like you a lot already
😄
what do you think of jodi
jodi could snap my spine over her knee and I would eek out a thank you with my last breath
but also she wouldn't, she would hug me with her burly arms and I would cry, because I'd feel safe and loved
thank u for letting my eyes read that
welc my pleasure
oh thats a really really really good post op
im so glad ur at sgg
since ur at sgg can u tell jodi i love her
its a well known fact jodi works at sgg
it is
shes been employee of the month for all the months
and she will continue to be employee of the month for the rest of the months
pyre was made about jodi supergiant
employee of the i n f i n i t e
pyre was made by jodi supergiant
can confirm im the frame around jodis photo that hangs on the EotM wall
already told jodi you love her, can confirm she loves you all too
We're desk neighbors, it's chill
im crying....................
oh i am just sobbing
welc! ❤
u ask her to pass u a pencil, she snaps it in half by mistake,
Was there... ever any doubt Jodi loves every single one of you?
only doubt in ouraelves....
💍
I just realized Jodi has no sleeves bc she flexed so hard they just can't hold it together
but now we Know
Jodariel is a blessing and I'd like to thank the Scribes for her
I unfortunately cannot speak to Jodi's romantic availability, that's her private business and I'm a bit too new to have delved into that with my desk neighbor. 😔
aawwww....youll get there
office politics, you know how it is
fair thank u very muh
its enough 2 kno that she knos i love her
as long as it s not iggy im OK
iggy.....who ig he.............
Hey Caitlin? Same @ jodi
I've yet to meet anyone who differs on Jodi opinion, and frankly I would be frightened of them.
disliking jodi is not allowed
Look
If you don't love Jodi I'm just not sure you understood the game
(everyone entitled to their own opinion of course ghdkdjgjf)
I love everyone and I love Jodi especially and I feel like it's a cruel trick that SGG allowed me to confess to her JUST so she could tell me no
Why crush my dreams like that
i cried for 20 minutes
Like, listen. I love Sandra too of course, of course, but. Come on.
If you're going to tell me no no matter what......why give me the option..... 😢
i couldn't tell anybody else i loved them tho
i love all the nightwings and i never got to tell them
this is just unfair and cruel
:'(
To counteract this I'd like to emphasize again that even if the blackwagon is bigger on the inside there's no way everyone fits in there comfortably, so between like, the forest and the summit of mt. alodiel everyone would be packed like downsardines
downsardines......
they can possibly fit four more people inside the orb
i pretty much combined the concept art and the canon design in my head
she has to enter sideways
Sideways and hunched over
mm, good Jodi appreciation in here
YES
she is
very good
i cosplayed her at pax east this year and it was a good time
but tbh everyone in pyre is...also very good
My life for Sandra. 😢
Everyone knows Pamitha is the best, even Sandra. 😜
jodi best girl
everyone forgets about umdildhe
i hear all these names in archduke’s voice now aajsdjgkwka
I can feel civil war rising
#pyre @heavy hill I'm afraid she's already in a long term loving relationship with Y*lach.😥
i would never forget about udmildhe, the true best girl of the game
Dat hunchback.
:(
All joking aside, Sandra is the very best.
Yess
Jodariel all the way
Shae is the cutest, however.
i named her rhae ;w;
Fae is the cutest but Jodariel is amazing
I love Jodariel but my heart breaks for Sandra
also at this juncture i would like to throw out some love for everyone's favorite lowkey hot mess revolutionary, volfred sandalwood
She's a perfect cinnamon roll.
Can we just raise some snakes for the biggest Bertrude of the game?
did anyone mention pamitha yet
i am Raising Those Snakes! love bertrude
can we just take a moment to appreciate everyone in this game and how they all deserve love and happiness
I fell in love with moon girl
also @open fulcrum is your icon kel’thuzad? lol
Sir Gillman is pretty great.
Yeh, it's a carbot KT
Everyone deserves all the love ❤
yes
so, who did you guys end up releasing? i put off finishing the game for MONTHS because i was so stressed i’d mess up and get a bad ending lol
I love the Wyrms
I released *ae first and I had to go through Jodi making me feel even worse for that u_u
@rich sequoia Well, except Manley and Lendel.
i left bertrude, volfred, and moontouched girl behind iirc
bertrude because she seemed chill just in the downside
volfred so he could stay with his demon husband (except i accidentally killed him my first try whoops)
and rhae because i wanted her to stay with almer
Listen, don't talk trash about my trash tree...wait...
manley and lendel are my faves ok can't even front
the dissidents are the best triumvirate dont @ me
or, with your enlightened brain, dark volfred and dark oralech
None of you know the true depths of Sir Deluge, author extraordinaire.
splat youre right and you should say it
in my heart.... all triumvirates are best triumvirates
i stan barker ashpaws
we are barker stans first and exiles second!
hes good i love him
People who didn't free both Pamitha and Tamitha should delete the game.
I had to free Iggy 2nd playthrough
Yas, free the insecure buff boi
ok i freed pamitha but i didnt want to because she was the only character i was good at playing
you could just dunk over the pyre ez
;w;
Pamitha ended up carrying my games, I think she was the last one I freed
the people who stayed down in my first playthrough were pamitha, mae, gilman and tizo
i freed myself because i’m selfish and i wanted to stay with my bffs
oh and the reader stayed too
Jodi is currently the only one carrying my team so I don't want to free her but also I do
i freed hedwyn first but i regret it because i never learned his backstory in-game lol
i freed oralech
i freed jodi second and i cried
i didnt free oralech because i wanted him to be with volfred
ahah if you play enough times you can learn it :')
but I ACCIDENTALLY KILLED HIM
OH JEEZ.
Hedwyn was breaking my heart with birb girlfriend and I liberated him to stop the pain ;_;
volfred was free so i got an ending with both of them in the commonwealth
it was touching
Hedwyn's back story, aka "I might have gotten my squad killed for some birb tail"
He's a cinnamon roll don't kill me
he is
Do Not Separate Them
they need to work out some issues and im putting them in the get along shirt until they talk about it
lol
Ah, Pyre, my favorite and least favorite game from Supergiant. It left me very ambivalent
i would kill for hedwyn and i would die for him
Pls don't kill and then die, or die and then kill
I spent like 60% of the game convinced that Hedwyn was going to betray me or something because he was too adorable.
no hes just wholesome
I had that feeling but with Dalbert
Quick question is spoiler talk allowed? Have a question but don't want to spoil anything for anyone
It says on the top that spoilers are ok so I guess?
Spoilers are allowed in specific game channels but not general chats
From the rules page: 3. Stay on topic. We ask that you keep general discussion spoiler-free. You can talk about any of our games at any depth in their own channels.
Just read the readme answered my own question lol.
Yeah Dalbert is the best dog dad
Dadbert
Dilbert
Yea, Pyre is an odd one for me, I like it, but at the same time, I don't. I kind of expected some sort of 180 by the end of the game, but that never happens
DADBERT INDEED
You also think characters want to mislead you, but that also doesn't happen so much as I'd expect
everyone in that wagon is my best friend
Yeah I spent half the game thinking what plot twist it would have, suspecting everyone and then it was like oh, everybody is mostly how they presented themselves first... 🤔
Especially Sandalwood. Somehow I'm expected to go along with his plan, and he seems like the shadiest guy of the bunch. I have my PLAN(tm)
The Plan™
However, the most interesting part of the game is most definitely the interactions between the characters, the soundtrack, and a lot of the little things, like the animations. The choice is also very interesting
but it's also weird in this way;
You never seem to get the full backstory for the characters you send off first
Mmmmmmmmm I love how the credits song reflects who you liberated
yeah thats why its a tough choice to liberate people
YEAH
bound together wounded me emotionally
I think that's supposed to fit into that theme of "Make your choice and move on with the consequences"
Yeah, as I said before, I ended up loving all the characters, even the morally questionable ones :_ D
you want the story but if you got attached, you also want to give them their freedom
^^^
in the end i was ok with the choices i had made but i still wanted everyone to be able to go free
I loved Jodi and sent her out first, and missed her the whole rest of the game, but I was still happy that she got out first.
Super bummed I didn't get to see the rest of her interactions with Pamitha though
i released hedwyn, then jodi, then rukey
theres so much in this game
i kept hedwyn until the second to last rite because i loved him, but wrote an entire gotdang fic about the concept that doing so is really kind of sad
When I tried the game on my friend’s PS4, I liberated Hedwyn first and immediately regretted it
has anyone else here done a run where you intentionally lose absolutely every rite?
and also are kinda evil?
I’m doing hard mode and am currently accidentally losing every rite so does that count
I wanted to, but I read that not much changes so meh...
oh a lot changes
i'm planning on doing that for my true nightwings run bc i'm not good enough to do it otherwise, lmao
It does?
and you get everyones stories
The other thing that's very odd, and maybe that's just a supergiant thing. The downside is described as this horrible horrible place, yet the company you have in the wagon makes it seem like a jolly ol ride; you can barely stay anywhere, most food is inedible even if you attempt to cook it, the many different areas have different problems that make them unlivable. Some parts of Bastion and Pyre are far more depressing on the surface than things in Pyre. You really need to think about it, because everytime Tizo comes on screen, it's like OH MY GOD IT'S TIZO HE'S SO CUTE.
yeah sparrow it was my TN run too!
It’s weird because I swear I’m doing better with my True Nightwings on PS4 than my hard mode on PC lmao
The visuals also make the downside feel somewhat surreal, and not necessarily in a bad way; the colors are very vivid and lifelike
like i was playing with the idea of throwing every single rite and seeing what happened but I CANT DO THAT TO MY CHILDREN
TIZO
i did all the trials just to refuse sandra, and it sure did hurt
MY BOI
Oh yeah, that's a good point, maybe I will. I was planning to start streaming in the next month or so so that could be something I could do. Streamer loses the game on purpose.
i never did hedwyn’s trial cause i freed him too early rip
game overs are a failure of the game designer
did y'all know that sandra has a modified epilogue if you never interact with the beyonder crystal, even when tariq gives you it and the game tries to nudge you into clicking
Oh what
mhm
oh what
I didn’t know this!!!
That's horrifying
I believe I lost one of the liberation rites on purpose. Because Pamitha more or less blatantly begs you to free her sister. On second thought, that was a horrible decision LOL.
spoilers are ok!
@wide river what is it???
it follows the same as the normal epilogue, but when it talks about what might've happened to the crystal....
Others remain skeptical that the Beyonder Crystal ever existed, or, rather, that the visions that it granted were anything other than the result of an active imagination or a fever dream.
Indeed, none of the exiles of the Nightwings ever provided a conclusive account of having encountered this Sandra the Unseeing, nor anyone matching her specific description.
To them, the Beyonder Crystal, if it even existed, was likely just another of the many objects in the Downside best left untouched.
yeah its what i did bc pamitha made me cry so i figured that reaction means i gotta
CRI
oof
And then if you free Pamitha as well, her sister breaks one of her wings if I recall over their family feud.
F
i took the crystal with me when i left the downside
Very violent family
yup, that she does
That epilogue hurt
i just like imagining myself carrying around this big green bowling ball wherever i go
there's also a very minor text change if you free volfred in the final rite
I loved the sorta-kinda-relationship you can build with Sandra
At least they're on speaking terms after the broken wing incident.
Oh!! What!!
My Reader ended up staying with her in the Downside
and i mean incredibly minor, it's literally just a change of wording
but it's neat that that's something the game accounts for anyway
I know you're all going to hate me for this, but I took the crystal and tried to sell it to Ron (disclaimer: I ended up really liking Sandra, please don't kill me)
I was very hurt by two things; the fact that I freed the 3 starting characters (Hedwyn, Rukey, and Jodariel) but that in the end, I can't keep my promise with them because I let Oralech go. And that by separating Sandalwood and Oralech, the latter realizes that the former meant no harm to him and sees what he intended to do, but the both of them never meet again.
Did you know that if you ring the dinner bell too much while Rukey’s still in the Downside he’ll eventually get pissed and take out the thing that makes it ring for the rest of the game
Bad decisions were made
you can't sell the crystal, no.
Good
In my defense I'll say that she encourages it xD
i love how immersive this game is
When she said "you could find someone interested in buying it" I was like omg Ron
gwai taish
in my first playthrough i didnt think once about keeping a character because gameplay, i was just in full MY FRIENDS NEED THEIR FREEDOM mode
Spoilers: you can't sell her
and i was freeing people based only on the plan and how well they would do up there
Pyre is an odd one, because while there's a lot of negative things I can say about the game, there's a lot of things that I really like, whereas Bastion and Transistor, I tend to be a lot less ambivalent. Mayhaps that's the result of having this odd experimental gameplay, that's what makes the game special by all rights.
So this is probably a stupid question, but is it actually possible to complete Volfred's plan of freeing someone to "match" each Scribe? I don't remember how many people you can free vs how many Scibes there were.
..until i threw a match for tamitha because pam asked nicely
The whole "So and so was praised as So and So reborn" thing
I'm planning a replay soon
no, you cant free everyone :(
also if anyone's curious as to what the minor change is:
if you free someone who isn't volfred (this text just uses the reader for convenience)
They found the Commonwealth in a state of unrest. Spurred by the efforts of [number] liberated exiles, Volfred Sandalwood's revolutionary Plan had incited the masses. These exiles, and the starless sky, portended the return of the Scribes.```
if you free volfred:
```That night, Volfred Sandalwood returned to the Commonwealth. He was to be the last. The stars had faded, and the cycle of the Rites had run its course.
He found the Commonwealth in a state of unrest. Spurred by the efforts of his agents, Sandalwood's revolutionary Plan had incited the masses. His arrival, and the starless sky, portended the return of the Scribes.```
i freed myself and not volfred because: 1. i wanted one reader to go and one to stay 2. i wanted volfred to stay with oralech and 3. I WANTED TO KEEP MY PROMISE TO MY BEST FRIENDS AND IM SELFISH AND WANTED TO SEE THEM AGAIN
You can’t free everyone but the Plan will be successful if you free someone every Liberation Rite
well, the plan's always successful
Volfred and Oralech need to be together always imo
how many nightwings you liberate dictates how violent it is
You can't I think. There aren't enough liberation rites. The book explains a lot about the scribes, but some of it is a bit wishy washy. I don't know if the book is supposed to be an accurate re-enactment or some embellished story.
I'd go with the latter
yeah the ”bad ending” is a bloody revolution iirc
I freed Volfred and Oralech ended up dying. I felt awful, but I thought the Plan was the most important thing.
i accidentally killed oralech because i won the rite
Yeah. I REALLY wanted to let him go, but all I could think was "Can I take that risk?"
Oralech is a filthy cheater, just like the other triumvirates!
They all cheat on the liberation rites, it's unreal
Who knew that NBA Purgatory Simulator 2017 could be so complicated
tbf tho, he HAS been practicing the rites for a long time
he WAS nerfed. he fell off a mountain how much more nerfed can you get gjhgjkgjkgkjg
nooooooooo
lmao
"While you talked to your friends in a wagon, I studied the rites."
poor oralech getting dunked on
if he were any more nerfed hed be dead
oh wait
no no...today...he is doing the dunk ing
they are so badass
@lavish ridge you're welcome 📝
I really don't know what was the idea behind the book. Other supergiant games also tend to make you play stuff "after" it happened, but Pyre turns that up to 11, and you have a whole book of "HERE'S ALL THAT HAPPENED", and some of it seems more interesting than what happens at the moment. I can't help but feel that's a very conscious decision.
IT’S SO GOOD
here is the large version
ty sparrow for
and
I think the book is more like “you don’t NEED this to enjoy the game, but if you like worldbuilding, then here’s something for you”
interact to tell him to please be quiet
i love the discount he offers you before the last rite
with the confirmation text of “great.”
I find that line kind of weird. I always thought that to enjoy supergiant's games, you need to read the dialogue to get a grasp on what's going on. For instance, in Transistor, you have to use the abilities you get to get extra text on characters in the game, and sometimes this text is a good indication of why things are the way they are, or why certain things happened.
i never told ron to be quiet, what happens if you do
Ron.... have you guys sold your talismans by accident?
he bes quiet LUL
he just stops moaning
and you can click him again to make him awake again
i dont think i sold them on accident
I figured he'd get upset and not gimme good deals if I bothered him
Nah
if you tell him to be quiet you will catch my hands
let ron be who he wants to be
He just sleep
but i had a playthrough where i got a ton of money and never bought anything but stardust
I also love that one part where if you help him out your stats go down
make it rain?
It cannot be returned, you need to repurchase it
I guess the biggest difference between Pyre and the other games' text is how impersonal the book in Pyre feels. You're reading on this big legend that kind of relates to the environment, but not the characters themselves sothereof, I also mentioned something about the book feeling like it's embellished.
oh i forgot i cant upload images hold on
The world in Pyre is very old. You travel around and you can see the carcasses of these giant titans, which are supposedly the cause of a bunch of the natural disasters that make the land unhabitable.
and they are hella cool
my favorite one is the scorpion, the spring of jomuer i think
this is the most money i got in a run
And it makes you wonder whether the titans actually existed in the form they're presented as in the book, or if they were written as fables to explain these natural phenomenon.
That's a bit rich I suppose considering the exiles follow the stars to play fantasy football rites
i think that was a reason i liked pyre so much
well i dunno where else you could find a giant scorpion skeleton if it didnt exist
for once, youre not the leader of something, or the cause of something big happening
but youre part of it
i think thats a common theme in supergiant games
The titans did exist, but the way you read about them feels more like you're reading about a legend, and you can't really say whether the weather sucks is because of the titans or if it was likened to the titans due to how impressive they are size-wise.
So essentially I want to talk about how Pyre sets up a really neat situation where, no matter what you choose, you have a bunch of stories that work really well as thematic parallels to each other.
And I'm trying to remember how all of the character arcs can play out
the focal point of what I'm going to focus on is Tariq and Celeste
they represent the sun and the moon and can only meet during the eclipse (the liberation rite), and it's unconfirmed as to whether they end up defying destiny basically at the end
and a lot of the other character arcs mirror this
its unclear even what they are as well, since during the end credits song they say something like “we return to the stars”
I kinda think they're literally mortal avatars of the sun and moon, given how old Tariq is supposed to be
but that's just speculation
Anyway, Hedwyn's arc has major thematic parallels, as does the Reader's if they engage with Sandra
Trying to remember if there are any others that kind of fit into that
In the same way that the scribes are the original exiles. Each of the scribes has a chapter that they wrote in the book, but it seems like each one of them fells a titan singlehandedly. The scribes feel more like a religion that exiles would tell each other.
that’s the vibe i got from it tbh
pyre has a lot of religious parallels from what i noticed
The book seems more like a set of instructions for the reader to eventually become a voice for the rites, to instruct the exiles on the path to freedom.
some of the garb they wear in the rites is similar to what a priest would wear
i noticed this when i was at church for easter actually
i mean, that's exactly what the book is
fantasy bible
the book is supposed to guide the one who reads it into becoming a better person
remember, literacy wasn't banned at the time the book was written
The scribes are mostly orally transmitted legends. I think of it like the old folk tales in Europe. The Wild Hunt (no, not the witcher you silly people!) is a fairly common legend that was passed down and interpretations changed throughout territories. Over here in Quebec, it became "La Chasse-Galerie" or rather "The Flying Canoe", whichever way you want to look at it.
the scribes intended that those who were exiled would carry the teachings of the book back to the surface and share them with others - hence the focus on those who return to the surface being worthy
Yea, another thing you can see is how all the members of the nightwings get offered these lofty positions in society when returning from exile, all of them refuse, even the shadier ones like Rukey, who would otherwise take advantage of it.
somewhat apropos of this, i just saw on twitter a image of a manuscript written in gold on black vellum -- i legit thought it was a screencap of the book in Pyre at first glance
"Black Hours," (Belgium, Bruges, c. 1470 )
Morgan Library & Museum (MS M.493).
One of a very few manuscripts on vellum that is dyed black. This image is of folios 18 verso and 19 recto shows Whitsun (also known as Pentecost).
Text written in silver and gold, with gilt ini...
That does look very similar!
I'm shamelessly stealing the idea of a prison dimension where escaping grants you social status
completely different context/tone, but the concept is just too good
I suppose the design of the books is also very interesting, much like these old manuscripts, the book of rites seems to be made out of rigid or at the very least extravagant material.
it's bound in the hide of yslach :D
and yslachs blood is the ink, no
Well, I mean, you can drink the blood of christ and consume his body. Doesn't mean what you drink/consume are either of those things really.
actually catholicism is weird and does believe you are actually eating the body and blood after they’ve been blessed at mass
But the fact that it lights up and is somewhat magical gives credence to that idea, even if it's left up in the air
the exact quote is: They later used Yslach's own hide and ichor to bind the Book of Rites.
I'll throw in some LEDs in a book and proclaim that it's made by a godly entity!
Magic
that’s the spirit
If anybody at supergiant reads this and I'm very wrong, I will be embarrassed for ages.
in greek mythology, the gods were said to have an ethereal fluid called ichor in their veins instead of blood
tariq's eyes are compared to the bindings of the book of rites, too
Tariq and Celeste are something of interest to me
they both have instruments and sing the various deeds of the triumvirates
which leads us back to the legends being passed down orally I suppose.
They're MIA in between rites though, right?
And they complete the astral theme by representing the sun and the moon.
Ooo
Seems like it, yea, they vanish and are left ambiguous
I'm like 95% sure the condition for a liberation rite is the eclipse because of this
We do know however that Tariq has been with the Nightwings since before Sandalwood was around.
The other thing that's interesting, I suppose
Is how the exiles look up to the stars for guidance, while being liberated is also related to ascension.
Becoming one with the stars, something along those lines, since people returning to the commonwealth usually don't come back down.
@hexed pagoda The thought never occured to me that it could be they meet during an eclipse, and now that you said it I love the idea
thats like an ecilspe every night tho?
It's a neat take on the common mythos of the sun and moon being lovers chasing each other across the sky
when the rites begin?
no, only the liberation rite is an eclipse
ah
@halcyon lily I think they mean when it's a liberation rite
ye ok
Dang, beat me to it lol
the liberation rites specifically occur under a "blooded" moon
But that means the end of the cycle is marked with LOADS OF ECLIPSES
Red moons are caused by lunar eclipses
Just imagine the headlines in the Commonwealth that month
amazing
and eclipses are symbols of the fall of an empire too so... there's a lot of contextual symbolism going on
blood moons have also been associated with the end of the world, so
and yeah, I think something about when the rites occur is related to a peculiar lunar cycle
Was the empire afraid of exiles coming back to the commonwealth? That's a strange thought.
or the commonwealth rather.
Literacy was banned for a reason, but I can't quite remember why
I don't think they were afraid of people coming back, no
because normally the people who did return would become like the speaker (forget his name right now)
I wouldn't think so, because the commonwealth looks over the rites, the voice that is.
Brighton is the archjustice
I think that was it, yea
literacy was banned due to the invention of the printing-press, i believe
he was one of Volfred's teammates
most exiles who returned integrated back into society with their new revered status
didn't really cause much trouble until Volfred intervened, I think
Actually, as I recall
Literacy was banned before the printing press was invented
But I'm not sure
I thought it had been banned some time before that?
I recall Sandalwood being exiled because he used a printing press to print anti-commonwealth material
I think he was exiled for using a printing press, period. The idea of making his own books. Though...it wouldn't surprise me if they were stuff to spark the revolution. He's already well-known for not liking the Commonwealth.
Yea
The Nightwings sending back their exiles is a massive issue for the commonwealth. They already have the impending war to take care of, and from my understanding, the returning exiles are so well regarded that the best the commonwealth can do is give them lofty positions in society, likely because that's the treatment they give to returning exiles, but also probably to lure them away from Sandalwood's goals. The voice makes it rather clear that he knows about Sandalwood's machinations.
literacy was banned two-hundred years prior to the game, "in response to growing unrest"
caused by the invention of the stamping-press, which had led to a proliferation of what were seen as dangerous ideas
volfred was exiled not specifically because of using one - he was exiled because he trash-talked the commonwealth, the literacy ban, and the war with the highwing remnants
by order of archjustice androbeles IX all literacy is banned in this channel henceforward
Hi there! I was curious if people have had any discussion about Pyre's multiplayer mode?
My partner and i use it to settle disputes. I wish there was an iOS version that allowed ad-hoc networks so readers could face against each other anywhere they meet
That'd be cool! One of my old roommates is currently working in China, but he got super into the game around the same time as me while over there, and we spent a lot of time talking about different teams and strategies. Still haven't gotten the chance to actually play with him, but I'm definitely interested in trying when he gets back.
I literally forgot there was a multiplayer mode.
Oh man I would love to be able to settle arguments with "see me in the rites" and just go for it lmao
I love multiplayer mode, with enough people we could even create tournaments. In this day and age, I also appreciate the intentional choice of local multiplayer
Pyre tournament meetup?
I only know one person IRL who lives anywhere near me that plays Pyre too
but hey if you guys wanna do Pyre LANs 👀
We may cars and Internet, but if you're looking to participate in a rite with a friend you gotta see them in person. Nice cultural touch that transcends the game
I think it was more a financial limitation than an intentional choice. But I would love to set up a tournament
Maybe at something like PAX?
Finances probably did dictate more of that @signal sonnet thanks for grounding me back to earth 🤗
Pyre wouldn't play nice with latency.
This is true...
PS4 Pro hates titan stars and matches that go on too long
If you add latency to the moves themselves, the game would play horribly, it's somewhat timing sensitive
If you add compensation, a lot of wonky stuff will happen, again, due to the fast pace of the game
mmm. I don't think the game is that twitchy/timing sensitive compared to most online games.
But it probably would have been an ineffective use of developer resources to focus on making online multiplayer
It doesn't have to be as twitchy or time sensitive, but i know in multiplayer when I'm playing against a Madden fan because they'll set up screens and other moves that may lean on timing and execution more than somebody else just trying to clean the field and waltz the orb
They had a pseudo-tournament for pyre last pax, so it's definitely possible
Interesting on the madden observation. I've sorta gotten a glimmer of an idea of strategies like those but mostly end up waltzing the orb, as you say, after clearing the board.
I like to drag plays out and then strike when my opponent starts getting sloppy defending their Pyre
I play more like a soccer team lol
(recovering midefielder though so it's what i know)
I played stupidly agressive until the final moments
where I was left with the more defensive characters like Bertrude and Sandalwood
I also abused Ti'Zo's special talisman
it was busted
I found Bertrude's talisman busted. Especially in the glaze where her aura ignores all those pesky roots!
Glade*
exept when you zip into a demon 400 times..... skill sometimes lacking
happens to the best :D
though I think the most issue I had was against the chasity in the last fight against them, where they regen half their HP mid way through
like wtf
the hardest for me was the essence's final gambigt
Lol need more Commonwealth friends @abstract gull😉
"aaaaand we start halfway up the court now, have fun with your full offense lineup"
i wanna do my fourth playthrough eventually
because gillman, pamitha, xae is not a good lineup against hyper agressive harps
@elder prairie that sounds like a glass canon lineup! I miss Xae's talisman, she could literally run right through a triumverate
yeah,,,,, pamitha's was my bread and butter going thru the fist time
mine was ti'zo :D
again, busted
I never really used fae much though
her style just didnt fit mine
yeah..... for me xae was a means of just jumping clear across the entire board....
props to anyone who can use ti'zo well i could not get a handle on him
I was really into Rukey, he was my favourite character to play with
And then I sent hin away first rite cause 🙃 🔫
I am a genious
I also liberated Rukey first and the longer I played the more I regretted that lol
rukey went home first becuase I he was not my style in the rites
gillman was just better for me
LOVED GILMAN
I was definitely about the speed game. gotta be fast and just nyoom around everyone
eventually my stratagy became gillman/pamitha take turns rushing the pyre and tizo and later jodi for defense
I remember ti'zo being my ant-bird blimp, also hands down best quotes and interactions
nyooms around the chat
and then I started going for 100% and all that went out the window because flying over stuff becomes a lot less viable once the AI learns how to do anything
Gilman was great
super slither bertude was really good too
I mostly used Gilman/Ti'Zo/Jodariel
no lie sometimes I said "nyoom" out loud when I did a particularly good maneuver around someone
I NEVER LEARNED HOW TO USE BERTRUDE TILL THE VERY END
Like I barely used her but then I saw how OP she was
And I was like "I missed out"
Bertrude was also very clutch 👌
At the end she made up for my inability to use Sandalwood
yeah.... i didn't bother until i started fudging around in VS for the "master conductor" achievement....
Sandalwood was so hard for me to use he wasn't even worthy of being liberated in the last rite lol
i barely used him
which..... dificulty 5 with 6 titan stars..... that sucked
sandlewood is a defensive char... and very very good at that
yeah, i just couldn't get used to it. like i said more about the speedy players
Yeah I couldnt ever really play defensively
no defense for me i was always balls to the wall
He is hard to master but a great way to misdirect people. I would put his sapling in a lane just to get the other side to focus there and then just nyoom along the other side with a gilman or Xae to the Pyre
yeah,.... it was once I ended up playing on true nightwing Ye olde "just rush it" strat beame dubious
and got replaced with one defense one hedwyn one rusher with the "respawn when plunging" talisman
ooh solid
Have yet to play True Nightwing, maybe I will this summer
Hedwyn for the “sacred bond” trait
The “run over where your guy got banished and res them” trait
Gillman worked for that role with “avenging aid” in case of banishment sickness
(Assuming you didn’t forget how hard he is to steer and send him careening into an aura 200 times........ enjoy your freedom lendel....)
so how many runs of pyre have you done?
3 completed 2 in progress
i've only done one but i'd love to play again
has anyone managed to 100% it?
Yes, that is my first platinum trophy
ya!
achievement wise..... this was my first and only 100% on steam
I loved Pamitha/Gilman/Volfred, and once I did Hedwyn with the anti-harp classing it was BEAST.
*ae and Ti'zo were strong seconds, but it took me a while to get the hang of them
Timing *ae's jumps was... dificil
@tardy moth it took halfway through my second run to get the hang of *ae's jumps (best way I've seen so far to faithfully represent this character in conversation)
Same same. I didn't really use her much until my second run, but once i got the hang of it i grew to like her
And Khaylmer's Anklet is so crazy OP, as is Triesta
so what's the verdict on how we describe Xae, do we use Stowaway or Moon-Touched Girl or _ae
I think most people have used *Ae, but honestly anything ending in ae is understood
the old server used ae!
I've seen *ae, which is easier to type for me but always seems like I'm correcting myself on something.
or *ae, yeah
In the context of the world itself, I recall the character herself not being overly fond of 'moon-touched' as a descriptor.
ouch tariq and celeste kinda immortalized the name she doesn't like if that's the case
I do have a question, if anybody in here can clear it up - how does the geography of the Downside in relation to the world above actually work?
Is it just at the bottom of some impossibly immense escarpment, atop which lies the Commonwealth?
I don't think we really know, since you can see the stars from the downside
I think the river you get cast down is a portal to the Downside, which is another dimension(?)
Yeah, that's why I went with 'escarpment', rather than 'underground cavern, a la Echo Bazaar'.
The other reason I think it's not, like, a separate plane of reality has to do with the means one particular exile uses to try and return in the epilogue.
Which all imply some degree of physical contiguity (is that a word?) between the worlds above and below.
yeah
We never really learn too much about the commonwealth at all except bloodborder and the war
Yeah.
i may be wrong here but when it follows the last exile liberated in the rite against oralech it actually shows that exile become a star
I don't think that's ever explained outside of anecdotes. We know the imps can somehow get a message across, but you can't exactly fly back to the commonwealth, which leads me to believe it's not just a matter of ascension. I'd like to think the passage between the downside and the commonwealth is more akin to river styx than anything else.
But we know if Hedwyn stays in the downside that his lover comes down from the commonwealth. I think moving down is incredibly easy, moving up not so much.
Yeah, that much is clear.
it also seems kinda like it looks like you could make it on your own because of what manley does tho he fails
And yeah, I do recall that panning shot making me raise an eyebrow.
the downside is just covered by a giant sheet of paper so when entering or exiting it looks like a star but it’s actually a giant bio dome
'course, in the realm of 'how does that work' the shimmer-pool just raises more questions, given that it's capable of exerting some degree of selection on the folk that step into it.
Pyre's people aren't that technology inclined either. They mostly seem to rely on some divine forces.
Even though the blackwagon does fly, I doubt it "flies" very high.
(inasmuch as all one people we hear who tried to ninja loot the spot drowned as a consequence)
science isn't going very far either with the ban on literacy
...which raises further questions on what would happen if a wyrm tried it, since they're amphibious.
The difficulty to get to the commonwealth might be explained in two ways
so.... yeah, it would appear the shimmer pool is magic in some way
The first one would be the terrible weather conditions of the downside
again with the liberation rite vs the true nightwings... i'm pretty sure celeste has a line about "it doesn't have enough energy" to send everyone free... just the one
The second one is that it's simply a passage akin to river styx, which would mean that the downside and the commonwealth are just on two separate planes of existence, or that said passage is just impossible to go up in. One way you could explain the imp messages is that imps probably drop the messages part of the way through.
They do.
But at the same time it may be unrelated
yeah, harps are stated to get "clipped"
/sorry mobile reading is hard
I think the only thing we can entirely conclude is that mojo of some variety is at play here.
and wyrms are stated to not be able to swim back
so it's either a river styx sorta thing, a waterfall or both
I've always wondered if it was some sort of "journey to the center of the earth" alternate world. A la the actual jules Verne novel
If the separation is only physical (i.e. infeasibly huge escarpment or underground cavern or what-have-you) then mojo's needed for the stars and weather and suchlike to be present in the Downside; otherwise, the nature of the place is explicitly magical.
And not. Whatever movie adaptations I haven't seen
@tardy moth - yeah, I was thinking that too, although that might be because I like Spiderweb Software's Avernum remake series, and that immediately sprang to mind as a consequence.
not familiar with that story
There are known connection points, but it could also be some sort of like, defined boundary spaces as well
Like a lintel under mistletoe at midnight sort of thing
for me this sounds a lot like the common slippery slope dimension in fantasy
There's broad similarity of premise - big (like, world-encompassing) empire has conquered world, uses giant underground cavern as a dumping place for its undesirables.
^^^
once you go in you can't really come out save something real special
In that case the portal in is one-way, and finding a way out is explicitly one of the win conditions of the first game.
actually.... this might be in the book
(because the Empire has a vested interest in keeping the place sealed)
in some way shape or form
true nightwing mode all pages are unlocked
...oh boy, time to get dunked on.
I dint recall it mentioning it in the fulltexts of the book of rights that I've seen
@wide river has datamined a ton of the text assets, and all the book of rights was one of those things, iirc
(I was an enormous baby and didn't flip any of the Supergiant Risk/Reward Difficulty Toggles (TM) so there was a big empty section in my book.)
But it has been a while since u went back and read, so.
Worth a look!
yes hello who ping()
You have the fulltext if all the book of rites pages, yes?
It's probably left ambiguous because it adds nothing to the plot, it's one of those things that's better off to the imagination of the person playing it. The implication in the book is that the shimmer-pool, which is the waterfall that allows exiles to go through, came out from a titan
Another thing Pyre reminded me of (and I explicitly used this to describe the game) was 'Sportsball road trip through Exalted hell', so it being a different plane of existance doesn't seem wholly odd.
yes
Also I totally did the cheat and turned on all the titan stars during that one rite where the other team autoforfeits because I Am Cheap
that's not just an implication
@tardy moth yes! that is a lifesaver
And it got me all the titan pages which was gr8
i have the full text in front of me now trying to read thru
· 'Tis no mere myth that from the Archbeast's eye the Shimmer-Pool emerged, the sole means of freedom from this land.
You can't get the achievement that way, though xD
o7
it looks like there are multiple ways in but one way out for nonnative soecies
Which would actually make sense if you considered the Downside as almost a fae realm?
We talked about that earlier, the book recounts legends. It's very hard to determine whether the shimmer-pool comes from an eye or not.
(fortunately, the Exalted party that was the Scribes came through and cleared the place out some)
The titans and imps, as native "fae" so to speak have boundary-crossing abilities
the book was written by the scribes and recounts their journey through the downside
Demonification is just the slow change as to u become more Native, but you'll never truly be 100% fae
And so while fae can free-cross boundaries from fae to real, non-fae can only cross real-to-fae
Which makes sense as there are multiple downside entries, but only one exit
Works as well as any other explanation I've come up with!
...are there multiple entries into the Downside? I thought it was River Sclorian or bust.
The river Schlorian, the undswimmable pathway that Ores used in the sea?
I think there is maybe one more.
the "western drift" travel node says in its flavour text that the edge of it skirts the sea-dominion
Interesting.
there's also
- Dominion Abyss
Only wyrms of the Sea-Dominion are permitted passage here.
+ An undersea border believed to link the Downside to the other side.
That's the first one I was thinking of
But western drift too
Abd if course whatever the inps do
umm.... does it say anywhere saint triesta, the harp scribe .... were her wings clipped because i'm not sure they were
looking at a passage here, "My own wings, I once theought that they could take me anywhere, and then they took me here where I am bound"
It's said to be written by the scribes. The scribes are also defined by centuries of oral legends. The celestial landmarks are where those titans were felled. There are also only 40 books from what I recall, which the Nightwings seem to have many of. They need to do a certain ritual to begin the rites. Some of these titans are absolutely massive, it's hard to believe one individual from any of the races defeated one for each.
I suppose that's what made the Scribes what they were! They're clearly made of rather sterner stuff than your average representative of most of the people we see.
(more to the point, most of the titan-kills that I recall seeing described seemed to involve shenanigans of some kind.)
Ores went Call of Cthulhu on Plurnes, it took his entire army to take down Endriga, Triesta invoked mojo to drop a train on Xilvias...
(some sceptre?)
The only real 'beat the stuffing out of it' solo kill I can think of is Ha'ub going all RULES OF NATURE on Shax.
(or at least some approximation thereof)
(I count an impromptu 15-thousand ton dung ball as shenanigans)
