Ok so

CVs are ships that shoot planes, and whenever they launch planes it clears the screen of all enemy shells, torps, bullets, etc for a brief period of time

BBs are ships that shoot massive damage shots, and some of them have powerful barrages that also do good damage

for backlines you can go with a mix of BB/CV for most content, but you wanna have at least 1 of each for story

CA/CL/DD are all generally the same
Each are vanguards that move around shooting things, or torpedoing things, or both

theres 4 broad categories of vanguards

tanks, gunboats, torp boats, support, useless waifu tier

Tanks are generally ships that are, well, tanky
They are usually placed at the front of your vanguard since that slot takes the most damage, so tank eats the damage

most tanks are CA/CB, like Portland, san fran, azuma, etc.

although notable exceptions are noshiro and yukikaze, and ships that have self healing so they can technically tank (neptune, pheonix, etc.)

Then gunboats are ships whos main source of damage comes from guns

stuff like sandy kai, seattle cleves balti brem z46 etc.

Then theres ships whos main source of damage come from torps like ayanami, shimakaze, ibuki, etc.

Theres also mixed ships who got like half gun half torp like suzu/kita

theres also ships who are gun+barrage focused, but those generally fall under gunboats (laffey, z23, ams, etc.)

Then finally there's support which are stuff like helena, sirius, jda, kaza/other ara, swiftsure, aurora, etc.
