i dont know much about the steps in progressing in drawing but im pretty sure making a clear definite line is one of the most important thing you dont wanna miss. when you trace, do you set the opacity of the original image to <50% or something? it is so that you can clearly see the lines you make. also, zoom as much as you want. it helps.
