Look so I'm no architect or designer but I think that a starting point is asking yourself what you're trying to achieve with a dorm setup. It's a very vague question that can lead to more like "Who am I building this for?" and "What is the theme/setting of the dorm?". TL;Dr at bottom.
Example: I am designing a dorm in the theme of an office. It can be just one cell of an office, or the whole floor plan. From there, you can make it very simple and minimalistic office, or cramped and full (like Das Bismarckhaus). If you were ship/character in game, what would you like an office to be like? Bismarck would probably like a nice and big one, with lots of war ornaments and whatnot. London would probably like a more relaxed environment, with dedicated tea break area and a library of some sorts.
Basically, take a look at your dorm from a different perspective, and change/design the setup accordingly with that viewpoint in mind, if you wish/intend to do so @faint ridge
