the new windows update? it is for me

#

still have to reboot for it LaffeyDrink

#

that's what was hogging me down

#

(Italy)

#

for reference in regards to the expected changes/updates

#

scratch that

#

that's the update i got nvm LaffeyDrink

subtle hawk
#

great

#

gotta love the monthly update

#

🙄

#

I like having all of my devices up 24/7

vagrant holly
#

just rebooted

subtle hawk
#

I'm using Insider builds.

#

Yes, they just released a new build for Fast ring Insiders.

valid acorn
#

I wonder what they have released for the skip ring

subtle hawk
#

Perhaps the Skip Ahead will give 21H1 builds.

#

Right now, Fast ring Insiders are receiving Build 18995. That build has an ability to use Windows Hello PIN while in Safe Mode.

valid acorn
#

Here comes the 30 minute wait

subtle hawk
#

I'm making a build video later on.

violet nexus
#

atleast ours is not that spagoot

#

well lets see if python is for me or not

#

fuk i hate programming but need to do

#

SD-WAN solutions will be applied soon

gloomy tinsel
#

I really should get a nicer case for my server

#

Dust is building up in there and it's getting gross

subtle hawk
valid acorn
#

Uhh

#

The 3310 is still alive

#

But breakable

gloomy tinsel
#

Nokia is still very much alive

subtle hawk
#

Yes, but now they are making Android phones right now.

severe falcon
#

cuz no one wants the crap appstore of windows phones

vagrant holly
#

why are you acting like nokia using a different OS is a bad thing LaffeyStare

#

it's still nokia LaffeyStare

subtle hawk
#

Well at least Windows 10 Mobile is now considered a downfall for Microsoft's own mobile OS, so instead they focused on the popular mobilie OSes such as Android. Recently, Microsoft had a Surface event and they reveal the Surface Duo, which is their first phone to run Android.

#

They also introduced Surface Neo, which is going to run with the new SKU of Windows 10—Windows 10X.

tame topaz
#

Nokia's KaiOS phones are a bit of a joke software-wise, really.

#

It sucks, but I'm used to feature phones so I can bear with it.

#

I have the 8110 and never really regretted buying it.

#

Besides, it's tough as hell, as per usual for nokia.

subtle hawk
#

@tame topaz Fancy seeing you here

the fact that there are unlimited data plans that make mobile hotspots unusable is sad

icy merlin

When going with SD cards, I'd say either SanDisk or Kingston for lifetime

icy merlin
#

Aye, so I attempted to ask in #al-general but it got drowned out quite quickly and I only got half an answer

#

Who should I ask for a freely availlable version of the Z23 bot? Sje has some great functions like the weather thing and all and I'd love to have that in my own server as well

subtle hawk
#

if you asked a year ago maybe

#

but now she belongs to yostar so no, it can't be made available

icy merlin

First actually complete answer I get.
Might not be what I wanted, but thanks 😁

a 256 GB microSD card is around $40 if you're in the US.

quartz tide
#

Did windows home, pro and gaming has difference performance ?

valid acorn
#

@quartz tide Similar

#

Not a huge difference

#

I can't really find the difference between the home version and my pro version

subtle hawk
#

gaming

#

there is no windows gaming edition

#

yeah, I was about to ask about that too

vagrant holly
#

windows 10 only has home and pro, there is no performance difference between the 2 for gaming (which i think is why you're asking this question), pro and home are the same exact thing out of the box, however, pro has additional features that target businesses like additional encryption and networking capabilities, i don't think you're the kind of person who would need those features so just save the money and get home

subtle hawk
#

yeah the difference is minor

icy merlin
#

Pro also has a lot more settings and options they allow you to change and it doesn't come with bloatware and click-to-install tiles on the start screen. I was sickened when I saw a clean windows machine with Candy Crush and other crap games ready to install

subtle hawk
#

@icy merlin that's bullshit and you know it

#

a clean pro install is visually the same as home

#

with all the bloatware and such

icy merlin
subtle hawk
#

it just has a few more knobs and dials than home

#

that's

#

it

valid acorn
#

Pro has more stuff than home

icy merlin
#

Not gonna say you're wrong, since I haven't done a win10 install in a while and I always start by removing things, downloading a real browser and then setting up. But I honestly don't remember my win10 pro having click-to-install for crap like that

subtle hawk
#

I have all 4 editions of Windows: Home, Pro, Enterprise(both normal and LTSB) and Server

#

and I've had my fair share of experience with all of them

icy merlin
#

You forgot one

#

The worst one of all

#

Win10 IoT

subtle hawk
#

yeah no

#

IoT isn't part of the Win10 family

#

it's a separate version that's more or less a hardware connector between azure and your IoT hardware

#

cya no

#

just don't

#

everyone records telemetry

#

that's not a valid point anymore

#

well you are one that likes to tweak the crap out of ur install

The Iowa BBs are getting a huge upgrade and going to be classed as a BBG. (guided missile battleships) MutsukiHyperStare

#

Railguns, nuclear powered, no more gunpowder but electricity. Its a modern battleship if the plan gets an yes.

tame topaz
#

@severe ocean it's National Interest, don't bother.

severe ocean
#

Awww okay, I was hoping it would happen. I love future like tech.

subtle hawk
#

it's not viable

#

a giant armored ship with small range is not viable

#

a small destroyer has a huge range with missiles

#

that railgun won't be able to fire over the horizon

#

while a missile easily can

severe falcon
#

i mean the railgun can def fire over the horizon, cuz iowa could do that back in ww2, its just the missile is gonna be more acurate and have further range. also iowa already has missiles and CIWS, shes basically as modern as you can get without removing her turrets in favor for missile cells

tame topaz
#

"A Depressed Trajectory and Its Terminus"

gloomy tinsel
#

Railguns can 100% fire over the horizon, but the other issues remain

#

A railgun projectile is cheaper, but the system cost is more

severe falcon
#

i mean you would need a projectile that can be guided but also isnt affected by the electric fields from the shot itself

#

an unguided railgun is worthless because theres not a system on the planet that can get accurate enough for actual use

tame topaz
#

Yeah, every shell will need some sort of guidance.

#

For example the railguns on the huge fucking submarine in Ace Conbat 7 guide its shells with GPS/INS

severe falcon
#

which is even worse

#

cuz gps is really slow

subtle hawk
#

yeah

#

you need something in real time

#

like a auxiliary plane for the targetting solution

#

also the problem with railguns is the downtime

#

it takes a bit to fill the caps back up

#

because just like batteries

#

they have a max rate of charging

#

but in modern warfare a railgun won't be able to fire over the horizon accurately

#

unless it's a stationary ground target

#

not to mention that such a BB would need a escort fleet

icy merlin
#

Toaru Kagaku no Battleshipwaifu

#

On a more serious note, IoT at least pretends to be part of the win10 family. It even shares a lot of its marshallers that were just compiled for ARM instead of amd64. Too bad they just stopped after compiling half the marshallers so a lot of C# functionality they want you to use doesn't work

gloomy tinsel

If you have any kind of network hardware, I'd suggest turning it into a utility/media server. And indeed, Debian would be perfect for the job

Or go hardcore and run Plan9

mine died like so a year ago

severe falcon
#

yes but you have alternatives

#

like my house literally cannot get internet except them

subtle hawk
#

not rlly

#

my only alternative is satellite

severe falcon
#

dont you have like 10 Gbps or is that for something else?

subtle hawk
#

ye

#

that's exactly why I can't replace it

severe falcon
#

yeah im talking like normal everyday internet usage will be impossible

subtle hawk
#

the other ISP is garbage

severe falcon
#

cuz the only alternative that isnt satellite is AT&T

subtle hawk
#

they put a data cap on anything over 100Mbits

#

a 300 GB data cap

severe falcon
#

pfft we pay for 150 and get 30 if we are really lucky

icy merlin

Sounds familiar. We pay for 50Mb down and we're lucky to hit 18

And yet we also pay for 5 up and I occasionally hit 21

Wireless access points :3

flint bobcat
#

@subtle hawk if you have 3 networks, can every host on each network access 1 printer

gloomy tinsel
#

Yes, that is possible. Whether it's practical or a good idea probably depends on some other stuff

#

I'd say it's easier and better if the 3 networks are different VLANs on the same physical network, or physically bridged together

#

If the networks are physically near to each other, one way you could possibly handle this is by setting up a small computer with multiple Wi-Fi adapters as a print server

#

Granted this is a more-than-10-year-old blog post from some rando, but it demonstrates the point

subtle hawk

@gloomy tinsel Oh

vagrant holly
#

does anybody here have a clear idea about how usb 3.1 gen 2x2 works?

#

i mean so far i understood that 3.1 gen 2x2 is basically 3.1 gen 2 but it uses 2 lanes of 10 Gb/sec in tandem to give you 20 Gb/sec

subtle hawk
#

pretty much

vagrant holly
#

so does the usb (or whatever device) you connect have to be enabled for 2x2 or can any 3.1 gen 2 make use of the 2x2 speed as long as the device you connect it to has 2x2 enabled?

#

or rather, is capable of 2x2

subtle hawk
#

I think it's the same principle as pciex2

#

so if the device is only capable of one lane, it'll stay that way

vagrant holly
#

alright thanks

what @subtle hawk said

USB Final fix

vagrant holly
#

ye it's getting a little ridiculous

#

they are going back and renaming older standards which is like...why

#

3.0 is now 3.2 gen 1
3.1 is now 3.2 gen 2
3.2 is 3.2 gen 2x2

#

gen 2x2 actually makes sense once you realize how it achieves the speeds it goes at, but it's still kind of nuts how they renamed past versions

subtle hawk
#

just rename it so it looks new and compatible

gloomy tinsel
#

Also, USB 3.0, but USB4

the link above

Oh, the embed’s broken

@severe falcon can i put a function call inside a dictionary in python

severe falcon

uhhh probably, but why not just make it a certain string, and then when you check for that string, call the function?

flint bobcat
#

🤔

#

I guess

severe falcon
#

like theres probably a way to put it in there, but i have no idea and its probably complicated

subtle hawk
#

@stone wave most old devices can't hardware decode h.265

#

and I don't think there's enough demand to make it playable in browser embed

stone wave
subtle hawk
#

it's a problem with new standards, it sometimes takes ages for the majority to implement or have older ones become obsolete

#

coughIPv6cough

#

oi

#

IPv6 is just too different to be implemented at once

#

unlike H.265

stone wave
#

imo if your shit too much of a potato to decode h.265 you shouldnt be running discord with it to begin with

cause you could always do some doo doo ass software decoding

subtle hawk
#

hardware decoding and software decoding are very different

#

one will make ur CPU/GPU cry

#

the other won't

#

yep

#

also yeah I forgot h.265 reuse most of h.264's features

stone wave

im just mildly annoyed cause i screen capture something but forget to change the settings to h.264 for discord to embed it

any recommendations on powerful laptops in the price range of $1-1.3k?

severe falcon
#

why do you need a laptop that expensive?

valid acorn
#

so that it can last longer??

severe falcon
#

yeah but like why have a powerful laptop when you can get a much more powerful dektop for the same price?

valid acorn
#

Mobility?

severe falcon
#

what are you doing on the go that requires more processing power than a cheaper laptop?

flint bobcat
#

@severe falcon its for travel

#

i already have a powerful desktop

severe falcon
#

yeah but like what do you need the laptop for?

flint bobcat
#

portability

severe falcon
#

no like what programs and stuff are you gonna use?

#

are you designing jet engines in CAD software or just writing papers in word?

flint bobcat
severe falcon
#

cuz like im saying you can get a laptop for cheaper that will perform the same basic tasks and now you have extra money

flint bobcat
#

i had a $500 laptop before, and it was p shit

#

startup took like 1-2 minutes

severe falcon
#

yeah but did it do the job?

stone wave
#

I get away with just a Thinkpad T450s, it's not going to play games but it's bulletproof.

flint bobcat
#

ehh i guess

severe falcon
#

would you have paid another $500 to shave a minute off start times?

flint bobcat
#

well i am only buying the laptop on black friday

#

yes

stone wave
#

You gotta know what you're buying

severe falcon
#

bruh

flint bobcat
#

well the cpu needs to be strong

stone wave
#

Those black friday only SKUs suck ass

severe falcon
#

for what though

#

you still havent told us what this thing is gonna be doing

stone wave
#

Just find a ~$200 thinkpad or something with a SSD

#

and FHD display

flint bobcat
#

well i'll be moving in a year to singapore, so i can't bring my whole desktop there

severe falcon
#

"i need a fast processor so i can open word 4 ms faster nyehh"

flint bobcat
#

so like a daily driver

flint bobcat
#

acer FumizukiCross

severe falcon
#

oh so you wont have access to desktop

stone wave
#

can't vouch for em cause i dont own either but that's what you plan to expect

severe falcon
#

then yeah the 1k is def what you should go for

stone wave
#

alternative, find something with thunberbolt 3 and get a eGPU enclosure

severe falcon
#

also i had an acer netbook that became skynet

flint bobcat
#

i curse acer laptops

stone wave
#

do look out to see if they have heat issues

severe falcon
#

it somehow started off playing beta minecraft at 15 fps, and it ended its life playing it at 40 fps

stone wave
#

high temps is kind of a thing on at least a few of the past intel laptops

severe falcon
#

high temps are true on any laptop

flint bobcat
#

should i invest for a laptop cooler?

#

or just keep it on flat surfaces

severe falcon
#

like a fan mat?

#

yeah get one

stone wave
#

some of them thermal throttle pretty easily

severe falcon
#

you will want a fan mat

#

my old laptop was a $500 dell made in 2010

#

i got the CPU to 90 C playing terraria

#

90 C is also the emergency shutdown temp of the kernel

#

with the fan mat it was at 87

flint bobcat
stone wave
#

that's why you gotta research it

severe falcon
#

oh no it was a great laptop

stone wave
#

i mean for aria

severe falcon
#

but it had integrated graphics

stone wave
#

like we can point at a laptop and be like this seems to be reasonably priced

#

but we have no idea if the thermals or build quality is good

severe falcon
#

if you get one with an actual GPU in it, itll do fine

#

its just terraria is CPU intensive and now the CPU also has to draw everything

stone wave
#

What do you think of ASUS ROG laptops Aria?

#

That one seems nice cause it ain't got no fucking num pad.

severe falcon
#

bruh that actually looks like a crazy deal

#

its been 9 years since ive looked at laptops

stone wave
#

Lol I got a new laptop last month.

#

And by new I mean used, off of eBay.

#

Replaced my 2nd gen X1 Carbon with a T450s

#

because my X1 Carbon didn't have a FHD display and it was starting to annoy me

flint bobcat
#

i mean, i have an asus rog display EntyLUL

#

oh i was looking at that rog laptop an hour ago

stone wave
#

if you wanna spend the extra and blow your budget it'd net you a RTX 2060

flint bobcat
#

alienware one looks best out of all

stone wave
#

but otherwise the 1660 Ti should be enough unless you plan on some intense gaming

flint bobcat
#

alienware one has 16gb and 512 ssd

#

i like it

stone wave
#

you can easily swap out a SSD on any laptop

#

unless it's soldered on

flint bobcat
#

oh really?

#

could i swap it out for a 1tb one?

stone wave
#

yea

flint bobcat
#

nice

stone wave
#

they're all either 2.5" SATA drives or some sort of M.2

flint bobcat
#

alienware one is M.2

stone wave
#

only a few odd laptops have soldered on storage (like my X1 Carbon)

#

or a Surface Pro

flint bobcat
#

rip

#

my old laptop was wack with a soldered 4GB memory

#

upgraded to max was 20GB

#

which was weird

stone wave
#

You just need to figure out what M.2 it uses, if it's NVME replace it with a NVME drive (to keep that awesome speed)

#

but if it's non-NVME you have to stick with a non-NVME M.2 drive unless the specs mentions it supports NVME

flint bobcat
#

it just says 512GB PCIE M.2 SSD

stone wave
#

does it say something like m.2 2280

#

the last 4 numbers tell you the size

#

pcie m.2 = nvme

flint bobcat
stone wave
#

you can try to find more detailed specs elsewhere

flint bobcat
#

i could check service manual

stone wave
#

or just pry it open when you get it to check the physical size of the drive

#

a 1TB NVME 2280 drive is around $100 - $200

flint bobcat
#

user manual doesnt even show which type

stone wave
#

lol its usually 2280

flint bobcat
#

yeah its 2280

stone wave
#

You could buy the Lenovo I linked from Costco if you have a Costco membership

#

That supports dual drives

#

Some laptops have dual drive support but only 1 drive included

flint bobcat
#

hm

#

so i can install a 970 pro evo onto the alienware one

stone wave
#

You can probably just buy a USB-C 3.1 external SSD and be fine

#

I wouldn't buy a 970 SSD

flint bobcat
#

i really dislike keeping data in external hard drives

stone wave
#

Samsung charges a stupid premium

flint bobcat
#

i mean, do u have any other recommendations for fast speed ssd's?

stone wave
#

If you have to go Samsung get the one I bought

#

It's basically a 960 Pro

#

spec wise

flint bobcat
#

oh its still fast

#

🤔

#

w/r speeds are real good

stone wave
#

yeah you can get something around $120 at the same speed if you want to save

flint bobcat
#

well i have a year to save

stone wave
#

the main thing about that drive is MLC flash memory

flint bobcat
#

so its enough

#

whats MLC flash memory?

stone wave
#

MLC flash memory has a higher read/write endurance than TLC

flint bobcat
#

hmm

#

it ends 3 days

stone wave
#

it seems to go on and off

#

cause thats the price i got mine for a few months back

flint bobcat
#

ah ok

#

so i need to spend a total of $1.6k~

#

meh, thats fine i gues

stone wave
#

The SM961 is between a 960 Pro and a 970 Pro, the 3D MLC gives it substantially better write endurance and better sequential write performance over cheaper drives you'll find.

#

And considering a 970 Pro is $350

#

yeah

#

But you can get some standard TLC memory NVME drive for like $110

#

Just find one with DRAM though if you go that route

flint bobcat
#

mm ok

umbral onyx

@quartz atlas thanks LeanderXD

#

I didn't know it's this easy

subtle hawk
#

I'm on uni wifi

#

pi-hole would totally work

#

hm wait

#

I already have a wifi router

#

still I don't think my rpi can handle multiple network traffic that well

subtle hawk
#

@umbral onyx decompile and hope it's not obfuscated.

#

You can still work with obfuscated code, just a pain in the ass

subtle hawk
#

@subtle hawk it's binary code

#

even if he first extracts it, then decrypts it

#

and then decompiles it

#

it's gonna be missing a lot of stuff

#

I would know since I took the game apart very often

#

Yeah, assuming all the logic is on some server elsewhere. But in the off-chance that they do all calculations and just synch up states with the server you can still glean a lot of the information you need. (potentially)

#

Aside from that, you should be able to decompile to some form of assembly. I haven't done much mobile decompilation so I don't know how the compilers work and how the code interacts with the hardware.

severe falcon
#

well i assume you can decompile to ARM, but its probably gonna be near unreadable

subtle hawk
#

TL;DR you can't

severe falcon
#

not even to ARM?

subtle hawk
#

I mean get the AL source code

#

even what we get at the end of all that processing doesn't give us much insight if any

#

that

#

that's not decompilation

#

What would you call it, then?

#

unpacking

#

because java apps are never compiled or translated to machine code

#

since they run in the JVM

severe falcon
#

wait azur lane is java?

subtle hawk
#

android itself is java

#

for the most part

severe falcon
#

yeah but that doesnt mean you are forced to use java for games

subtle hawk
#

So apks aren't compiled at all?

#

no

#

why would apks be compiled what

#

I'm thinking too high-level. Probably compiled down from Xamarin or some other higher-level lang

#

again

#

not compiled

severe falcon
#

oh wait it uses unity

subtle hawk
#

what you're describing is transpiling into another language

#

Forgive my verbage hehehe

#

@severe falcon is uses the Unity mobile core along with that sound engine (dunno what's called) as the initial groundwork and bootstrap

#

then most of the logic is done in the Lua JIT binaries embedded inside the main asset files

severe falcon
#

and im assuming that technically AL is a 3d game like shovel knight

subtle hawk
#

no

#

2d

#

all levels are 2d

severe falcon
#

then is it always just called unity3d?

subtle hawk
#

beats me

severe falcon
#

huh

subtle hawk
#

unity can do 2d lol

severe falcon
#

yeah i know it can

#

but one of those packages is literally called "unity3d.player"

subtle hawk
#

AL uses isometric 3d

#

basically pseudo 3d in 2d

#

and 2d nowadays is basically 3d textured planes

severe falcon
#

then its a 3d game like shovel knight, like i said

subtle hawk
#

@severe falcon that might've just been boilerplate unity libraries that got brought in.

severe falcon
#

well yeah thats a possibility

subtle hawk
#

AL is coded in C

severe falcon
#

lisp actually

subtle hawk
#

Fortran

severe falcon

I'm looking for a mechanical keyboard with Japanese layout

#

how do I get one since I live outside Japan Thonk

stone wave
#

Find a JP HHKB?

subtle hawk
#

I'm not going to buy it right now though

stone wave
#

or yahoo auctions japan and find a service that can handle shipping it to you

subtle hawk
#

something like that, yeah

stone wave
#

an option is to build one if you find a PCB and backplate that supports a JP layout then you can source the caps

subtle hawk
#

lol not that custom please 😆

#

also I wanted numpads

stone wave
#

full sized, oof yeah custom full sized boards are uncommon

#

best bet would be to scour yahoo auctions japan

subtle hawk
#

yeah

#

man those 10keyless keyboards being on the assumption of latin layouts

#

meanwhile my language uses all 4 rows for characters

#

so numpad is a must for arabic numbers when I'm on that layout

stone wave
#

what language?

subtle hawk
#

Thai

#

it's built on top of US layout

stone wave
#

not sure how good the guide is

but it might be worth a look

subtle hawk

thanks

#

it's not that important though since I just need it for emulator inputs which I don't currently do

stone wave
#

wdym emulator inputs?

subtle hawk
#

emulator for old Japanese computers like pc88, pc98, x68k

stone wave
#

Ooo, if you're into it you could probably rig up a vintage board to work via USB.

#

Like with a teensy

subtle hawk
#

it's frustrating when ろ and - keys are non-existent on US layout

stone wave
#

is that 2nd character a hyphen?

subtle hawk
#

and had to rely on emulator's "send x key" option

#

yeah, the one next to backspace

stone wave
#

it's there on the US layout

subtle hawk
#

I meant on Japanese layout

stone wave
#

ah

subtle hawk
#

it has different symbols location

stone wave
#

most keyboards are probably ISO or ANSI and those have the hyphen

#

but IDK about the JIS layout

#

oh that reminds me you could probably just search JIS keyboard and eBay should have some results that ship internationally

#

probably not mechanical but if you just need the layout

subtle hawk

yeah, I might go with that LeanderXD

I still like my current keyboard

probably save mechanical for US layout

@subtle hawk you have an all AMD build right

Oh I see. Yes they do

@gloomy tinsel At the moment EntyHeh

Also @severe falcon ur cable management is kinda weak for a case like that :3

subtle hawk

:3

severe falcon

bruh i have 3 hdds

gloomy tinsel
#

You have a cube and the fan cables aren't routed discretely

severe falcon
#

well i cant

gloomy tinsel
#

:<

severe falcon
#

there are no discrete ways to route them

gloomy tinsel
#

Sounds like you need extensions :3

severe falcon
#

if i go behind the mobo, then they have to weave between 3 hdds and the psu

#

and there is space for 3 hdds

#

so its wire spaghetti

gloomy tinsel
#

I needed a lot of extensions for my build tbh

#

My PSU has tiny cables

subtle hawk
#

go wireless taps forehead

severe falcon
#

also i swear that my isp can detect when speedtest is running a test on it

#

cuz this is GOOD for them

#

and it was lagging on discord right before

gloomy tinsel
#

You know ISPs pay Speedtest for results

#

Sounds like a great way to add latency and a new attack vector @subtle hawk

#

Lol

subtle hawk
#

also I'm okay with any US layout keyboards really because Thai layout is based on it and there are keycap stickers sold

severe falcon
gloomy tinsel

Lol

subtle hawk

lol

severe falcon

thats a full 12.6% of what we pay for

wait pig, youre thai?

i was assuming viet like user and janny

@gloomy tinsel not when you’re using spooky advanced wireless induction to power your rig
